  3. There isn't a TF in this game that is balanced around IOs.

Everything can be done with SOs, DOs and even TOs as appropriate for the level. Speed TFs are a bit harder to do with vanilla builds but are entirely possible.

The Player abilities trump AT/IOs etc any day, although the better players tend to be equipped better. Usually IOs and procs won't prevent anyone from getting pwned by a one shot or lucky hit anyhow.

Farming naturally tends to encourage playstyles that are one dimensional. Actually playing through TFs that are challenging would be a better use of time to force the player to learn new tricks rather than simply lean on gear.

PS. Shouldn't the title of the threat be named "Keeping up with the Kents" (or Waynes)?

Yah, ITF lag, Ship Raid lag have gotten markedly worse as the patches have rolled in. Granted I like pushing the envelope of the engine but if any Redname wishes to tag along for a ride one of these days I'd be more than happy to show them the big red marks all over the netgraph on ITF or a Ship Raid.

As far as the LGtf final room is concerned generally the TF doesn't last long enough for me to really be concerned about it. Reported the bug when it came out but I figured it was logged and nothing else.

I've noticed this as a general trend even outside of the game. People just don't want to think anymore. They want passive entertainment and to be led by the nose. The worst of it is that people start demanding to be spoon fed like it is their entitlement. Funny thing is that Justice seems to have more than its fair share of leaders/thinkers/creative types...most of them just tend to guard WW/BM nowadays though.

Despite that the downturn has been going on for a while, the obvious spike in US unemployment is more recent. However, it's certainly been going on longer than just this quarter.
I would agree that the general economy can have an effect on the revenue stream, but without knowing the demographics and metrics of the customers it is hard to gauge the impact that outside influences have.

If everyone was subbed on an annual basis, secondary accounts included, then Access numbers may not change that drastically and revenue may remain flat for a while. Depending on the state of economy, revenue might even go up temporally as people swap from annual renewals to shorter renewal periods (which cost a little more).

However, since the general consensus is that the recession will be long with a flat recovery, at some point the general economy will drag on CoX as well, which is probably happening right now.

Okay, here's something that annoys me. There are certain people you run into in the roleplaying community, and I'm not gonna blow up the whole world over this one, mind you, but all the same if these people get ecoli and s--t themselves to death, then I'm gonna really laugh.

Well, we've got the roleplaying community here, and, well, what do you think of when you think of roleplaying? Well, let's see. We've got Pocket D, we've got roleplaying groups, and ERP. Yes, deny it all you want, but we do get online and type-f--k back and forth, and, it might be a sad thing, I don't know, but at least we're not out harpooning dolphins and gang-r--ing social workers, you know? So, yay for ERP. And hey. People might think it's weird to roleplay sex online, but s--t, they voted for Obama, right? So what the f--k do they know? These are the same people that spent twenty million dollars supporting the AIDS foundation, and a billion and a half dollars watching f--king Avatar. So they can kiss my a--, and go to hell.

So I was ERPing someone online recently. And that means I was pretend f--king, for those of you who don't know. And, there are usually better things to do with my time, sure. But after spending another day on this planet with a few billion a--holes who can't tell the difference between gourmet coffee and and Folger's f--king crystals, pretending to r--e a four foot tall catgirl with an eight foot long d--k is actually rather liberating, you know? Gurgling shrieks of ultimate suffering always brighten my day, even if they're just pretend.

So I'm ERPing this catgirl, and I'm trying to make this - this is supposed to be fun, right? That's the whole point. I'm not here for charity. This is not a March of Dimes F--kathon or something. There are no sponsors giving a dollar to some poor diseased wretch for every catgirl I rip apart with my p--is, I'm here for entertainment value, you know? So I'm trying to help make this fun for everybody. And I'm putting a little effort into this, you know? There's no reason ERPing can't be nicely written, right? Nothing with putting a little art into your pretend f--king. So I type a good four or five lines here describing just how exactly how I'm ramming my vast, throbbing love probe against her lungs, you know? I'm at least attempting to be descriptive here. And now it's the catgirl's turn, and she goes, "Oh yeah, baby, don't stop."

And that was it. Got a superhero love god screwing her to oblivion here and that's all I get. And so, I thought, well, you know, s--t, maybe he's hard to impress or something, you know? Maybe he's overdosed on his Prozac. For all I know, this guy could be getting f--ked by King Kong every Tuesday night and I'm just a one-inch wonder to him here. So I try it again, and I write this paragraph, and I'm killing pixies with this s--t, it's so nasty. I'm ripping a hole in the ozone, angels falling out of the clouds, dead. This stuff was so detailed, it could have made the entire world clinch their a--es shut. And the catgirl goes, "Ooh, yeah, f--k me hard."

So it's like, f--k, man, do you have like, two fingers or something? What, are you trying to type with your left testicle here? I mean, I'm not asking for Charles Dickens, you know, but can we at least move past Debbie Does Dallas? I'm trying to do some decent f--king here. And he says, "Well, I'm doing the best I can." Yeah, well, if that's the best you can do, well you shouldn't be allowed to f--k. I'm sorry, but you should be gassed before anyone else stuffs their d--k into you if that's the best you can do. I'm not here to write a porn novel for you, okay? I need some feedback, you lazy s--t.

It never fails. Every time I'm in the mood to play around, I wind up getting some ERPer whose about as passionate as a bridge game with Jeff Goldbloom and it's annoying the s--t out of me. Is it too much to bother being a little expressive here? Where's the romance? I might as well be screwing a bucket of dead accountants over here. I mean how would you like f--king a dead guy with a pull string on his chest? You know, you f--k him for a little bit, you pull the string, "Oh, do me baby. Oh, f--k me harder."

Though I guess it's probably hard to have pretend sex when you've never had any real sex. If you screw the same way in real life as you do online then your d--k probably got bored and fell off. Well, you know what? Get off the internet. Okay? Get off and go f--k a real person for once. It'll do you some good, and it'll do me some good too because I won't come away from an arena match with you feeling like I just tried to f--k a stack of catatonic sushi. Either learn to pretend f--k properly, or for God's sake, stop doing it.

Hey, it's just a stupid trivial thing anyway, right? You won't miss it at all. If you simply can't put a little effort into your ERP, just put a little note in your bio that says "I f--k like Michael Landon" and start a Virtue canasta group or something. But stop wasting everyone's ERPing time, because - well, is ERPing the most important thing on the planet or something? I don't know, I just felt like b--ching about it, god damnit. So everyone just pretend that I had a good moral lesson at the end, and we'll call it even.

Then, while there is a correlation between the drop in access in Q4 '06 and revenue, revenue bounces back in Q1 '07 but access doesn't start bouncing back until Q2 '07. Revenue drops much faster than access from Q3 '07 to Q1 '08. There is some correlation, but there are significant offsets in some quarters and in others there is correlation in direction but disproportionate changes overall.

*If* we believe the numbers are at least fairly representative, then the answer to the question some people have asked: is it possible we bounced back after the drop in subscriptions (really, access) in Q3 '08, is yes, we did: to practically Q2 '08 numbers. We've since dropped back down to nearly the same levels as Q3 '08.

Could the increase in revenue in Q4 '08 - Q2 '09 be due to booster packs? Well, its a total increase for the three quarters of over two million dollars in revenue. If we assume $10 per microtransaction on average, and we assume we have somewhere in the neighborhood of 100,000 subscribers plus or minus, then that means on average every single player bought at least two booster packs in those three quarters. I suppose that's possible, but it seems unlikely to me (From October 2008 to June 2009 I think only the Magic pack was released).

In any case, this is my version of the revenue vs access numbers (click for larger version):

The axis labels showing revenue moves from 4M - 8M, while the access axis (heh) starts from zero, exaggerating the revenue differences. Not a big deal.

Again, it is difficult to posit the exact nature of subscription revenue when the total revenue is given only. Looking at 06 Q2-Q4 inclusive, it is difficult to say whether there was a drop in interest and thus revenue or that revenue was deferred deliberately by the company or by proxy.

I could not find a direct reason for the sharp increase in Q3 06, but neither could I see an increase in revenue for Q4 06, when the boxed set for GvE showed up in Walmart. Given that boxed set sales should have increased revenue for the quarter, I can only guess that the revenue was booked for the quarter previous when the title was available for the purchasers at Walmart to order.

However, expectations leading up the launch of GvE edition could have suppressed income (aka the Osborne effect.) While this is entirely speculative, I cannot find a direct reason for the drop in income, but the Access numbers may not be as tightly coupled to incoming revenue and therefore may be modulated over the preceding and following quarters.

Also, the manner in which the subscriptions are booked can have an effect on revenue. I'm not sure when exactly the various promotions were introduced, but the bonus 2 months for year long subscriptions were started before the loyalty program was introduced. This type of program itself can cause people to put off renewing or delaying payment in anticipation of the promotion, and a 2 month bonus can push stated income a Quarter forward.

It's hard to see exactly what caused the drop and spike in 06 without looking back at the microcosm in 2006 but over the 3 quarters the access numbers were still working together on average.

From a management perspective, monetizing your installed base is one of the low-hanging fruits to pursue. Between Oct 08 to June 09, not only was the Magic Pack released, but we also had the Mac Special Edition and the Architect Edition. Just remember that the AE Edition is a boxed edition, which may skew numbers more heavily than regular booster packs.

While there are no access numbers released for that time period, anecdotally from all the greybeards complaining about AE babies and the related chatter that had appeared throughout, it did seem like a significant amount of AE Edition boxes were sold.*

The Mac special edition may not have captured a significant amount of new players, I'm pretty sure every CoX player who wanted to support the Mac bought a copy just to 'represent.' The bonuses for buying it were just gravy.

*As to why AE boxed sets haven't led to a surge in subscriptions, I think one only needs to look to that huge giant spike when CoV was introduced to tell the story. While the boxed sales of CoV loom large in Q4 05, the subscription sales following that basically showed no gain. I believe that AE Edition is working the same way.

Normally you would think that selling a big number of boxes (to mostly new customers) would lead to a bump in subscriptions (and thus revenue going forward). However, CoV also coincided with the dreaded Enhancement Diversification. I believe the incoming set of new players was also coupled with the outgoing set of PO'd players due to nerfs. It would be very strange to presume that all of the people who bought CoV were existing CoH players...that would be the alternative explanation to why that spike happened without any increase in revenue following.

Anyhow, I think the AE Edition subs were more than offset by the AE 'nerfs' (some of which were entirely needed) enough to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

Of course, none of this is backed up by hard evidence other than my gut feeling.

There is a general correlative trend that you can see in the chart with Access and Overall Revenue. Without access to the amount of box sales, subscription renewal types and other minutiae this will always be an exercise in dart board prognostication.

Also, dramatic and catastrophic are not mutual. A critical threshold that is breached gradually can still be catastrophic. Not that I think CoX is anywhere close to a catastrophic threshold from the numbers I've seen.

I have used the free transfer gift to move a few more toons to Freedom and decided to give Virtue a try, cuz quite honestly, I have had a really tough time this past year finding teams on Justice, and I pride myself in being an excellent PuG Master.

Justice has always yielded some really good & fun players, but for us casual gamers, our play time can be very limited and sometimes we want to max out our time logged on with quickly building & running big teams.
More players on Freedom & Virtue = more chances of quickly assembling a team and knocking out some missions, TFs, etc.
    Can't argue the logic.

PS: It really seems like the vast majority of the idiot noobs have left Freedom; they probably left CoH for Champions or the next great shiny game that came along.

Justice still rocks, but nothing like it used to back in the hey days of 2004-2007.
Meh...the truth hurts. I've been pointing this out for a while now but no one really cared. Justice is too pro for pugs, so all the newbs got left out in the cold and went to Freedom.

  21. OK, I took Johnny's concept of averaging the $/access to extrapolate the Access and concurrents for the missing values going forward.

The yellow and pink lines are the extrapolated numbers at the end of 08 going forward. The scale for those two are on the left side vertical axis.

The blue line are published numbers and the scale is on the right.

Obviously this is rough since the $/access did vary a bit. The average value was taken from the published access figures after the CoV launch ($42.03). Concurrents were calculated from a similar timeframe and worked out to 12.5%.

I also entered in the various events for boxed sets and booster packs etc. and most of them did not make an obvious difference to the income stream (not shown in the graphic). However, 06 Q3 still looks funny compared to the rest of the income chart. The only thing I can see is that the income could have come from preorders for the boxed edition of GvE exclusive to Walmart, which came out the following quarter.

    Also according to MMOChart.com ((link)):
    Quote:
For NCSoft’s titles, the number I track is the “monthly access” number for each game as reported in the company’s quarterly reports. According to their documents, this number is the “number of unique users that log on at least once in the given month.” This is important for games like Lineage and Lineage II which use a variety of different subscription models depending on territory. For games like City of Heroes and Tabula Rasa, this number is probably somewhat less than the total number of active subscribers, unless NCSoft is just reporting the number of subscriptions in that field for those games.

Short of being the accounting firm that doesNCSoft's numbers, or the producers of CoX, we're going to be left to our own devices to figure out where the market position of CoX is and where it's going.

Obviously the people that really know don't feel that it's worthwhile for them to tell us.

Therefore, feel free to start crunching the numbers instead of waiting to be fed. Otherwise there's no point this discussion either, may as well wait for some redname to drop the numbers out of the sky for you.

Since 4Q 2008 NCSoft stopped giving an extra level of detail to CoX reporting, so everything we are talking about has to be extrapolated or interpolated when discussing the metrics of the playerbase.

Just kidding. Looks like CO did take a decent sized bite out of the player base.

Looks like the currency adjusted numbers are down. No idea what percentage European sales are like, and Euros have done well against the USD recently.
