I'm not expecting a CB invite, but if its not in CB then it won't be in OB either. Something that big/major won't get added "at the last minute"! The more time they have to test, the better.
-
All I know is that between this and everything else, one of the boards I go to has a fair number of folks who left looking at i17 as a "coming home" issue, plus there's more interest from potential new players. Especially in light of what some of the competition has been doing (that turned off a fair number of my friends who were otherwise happy in "that other game").
-
That would be nice, truth be told. Particularly new sets so its easier for those folks who are good at testing to suss out bugs and the like. They might have to alternate means of availability, though, so drop rates can be tested too (how folks test that I've got no idea, but some folks do!).

Quote:The biggest trick you'll run into (once the beta goes open and things can be talked about) is what looks better on one person's system doesn't mean it'll be the same for yours.Without breaking the NDA, I would just like to ask any beta testers who have access to both Nvidia and ATI graphics a simple question: on which company's cards does Ultra mode look better?
• CPU will make a difference.
• RAM will make a difference.
• Display will make a difference (resolution, quality of the screen, etc).
• Drivers will make a difference (remember to keep those updated!).
I'm under the impression that Paragon wants it to look equally good on both chipset maker's cards (ie, no favoritism, no "sabotaging" the engine so the other guy's cards have issues, etc). So, hopefully, you'll be good to go with anything you get. Generally speaking the more powerful card the better things will look, but that's pretty much a given for most games (and honestly, doesn't answer your question).
I can tell you that the footage we've seen of GR has been done on Radeons, though. Positron's recommendations seems to indicate they've done a lot of GeForce testing already. We know that neither SLI or Crossfire are working just at the moment. In short? Hopefully you won't have to worry about it and you'll be able to go with your preferred card maker -
I certainly hope that testing Ultramode will be part of i17's CB. Kind of counting on it. Right now the only reason I have to upgrade my video card is Ultra Mode... every other game I've tried recently (since upgrading my CPU) has run quite nicely at default (or better) settings... Batman, Mirror's Edge, etc.
-
Quote:You'll likely get a slideshow. The worse the card, the worse the performance.A different sort of question- all this talk about being able to run Ultra in "low", "medium", or "high" modes...what will the interface be like? If you had a weak card, would it let you attempt to turn it on in a high mode? What would happen if you did? No video at all?

Well, closed beta starts on 3/2 (just announced). The good news keeps on coming!

DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!
For the doomsayers
Way to build momentum for GR -
I'd love to run everything at 1920x1200 (native res for my monitor). As for AA? Uhm... that I've never really thought about. I'll usually turn that down first if I'm trying to improve performance in a game. I remember the last time I turned it off I wished it was turned on, but I got over it pretty quickly.
-
Nice to know. Given I'm running at stock speeds (2.4ghz) that's good news. My old CPU was a C2D E6300 @1.8ghz, so yeah... owie. CPU cap.
-
Well, the thing is I don't know how to translate that into English
What I do know is that, performance wise, its good, better, best. At the current pricing, review sites are universally critical of the 5830 so until its down by at least $20 (or includes $20-40 worth of stuff I'd want) its out of the running.
From experience, there's a minimum you need to spend to get good performance for the dollar. Any less and you're paying too much for too little. Likewise, there's a cap to that, where you start spending a lot of money for diminishing returns on performance (ie, bragging rights).
So, for me, cards like the 5670 and lower are out (not enough of an upgrade for me anyhow), as are the 5870 and 5970. That leaves the 5750, 5770, 5830 and 5850, and I'm a little less sure of my ability to suss out the best value here.
I either didn't know or forgot about the upcoming 5**5 model Radeons @_@
I'm willing to wait. Right now Positron's comment about the 5770 offering good performance under Ultra mode is nice, since I know that at least the lesser of the cards I was looking at can handle Ultra Mode. And honestly, I need to wait to save up the cash for the things anyhow
edit: I hope this makes sense @_@
edit2: GR performance will be important, but overall I'm thinking of my other games too. I'd love to play STO at higher detail settings, for instance. Since I go back to CO once in a while (yay free weekends) that's a perk. I'd like to run Mirror's Edge at higher resolutions than default. I'd really like to run Demigod at max detail at 1920x1200 (my desktop resolution) and 45fps+.
edit3: I've been told that some video cards require a powerful CPU to drive it, otherwise its power is wasted (hence most benchmarks using top-end CPUs). I'm *not* sure if my Q6600 is fine with anything or not. I'd like to hope so, though. -
Heh...
When they say, "excellent performance" I don't know how applicable that is to me. They could be testing with something top of the line (i7, tons of ram, etc) or at lower resolutions than I play at. As such, the card in and of itself doesn't quite matter as much in that regard.
The number of (obscure technical acronym) and (obscure technical form of measurement) doesn't necessarily mean a whole lot to me. I'd say its Greek, but then I'll start wanting gyros... but at least I understand those. -
Not worried about the specs - they're all good performers and the 5770 and 5850 are recommended by Toms.
I'm in no rush... got to save for anything I get anyhow. -
My current choices:
Radeon 5770 for ~$160
Radeon 5830 but waiting for it to hit $200-220 (reviewers are blasting it over the $240 price)
Radeon 5850 for ~$300
It seems like all the Nvidia stuff is a bit overpriced for their level of performance, so I'm not bothering considering them at this point.
Right now I'm trying to figure out where the "sweet spot" is - not spending too much, but not spending too little, either. And right now, I'm not quite sure which is the best value. My motherboard cannot do SLI, so I'm not worried about that. The most demanding games I play are Demigod, STO and I'm thinking COH's upcoming Ultramode might want the extra horsepower. Supposedly the 5770 gives "excellent performance," but no mention was made as to resolution, CPU, etc.
My current system is:
C2D Q6600
4g RAM
Radeon 4670 w/1g RAM
Windows 7 Home Premium
I'll be getting a new PSU with whichever card I go with.
I'm assuming/hoping my CPU is enough to drive these video cards. Right now I can play COH at 1920x1200 at Recommended settings and good framerate. -
Curse you Nvidia! The reviews for the Radeon 5830s are coming in and every one says about the same thing: "this would be a good card if it was $20-40 cheaper"!

Quizzical wondering what the redname commented on upon following Dev Tracker.
Clueless but well intentioned comment with inadvertent opening for further snarky comments. -
I might've missed it but I didn't see one "OMGDUMBINGDOWNCOX" comment regarding Positron's redesign or Silver Mantis not needing the computer.
/boggles but is happily boggled -
Bah... I don't care if Fermri is an overrated card with an air conditioner built onto it, all I want is pricing to drive ATI's cards down a bit. Looks like I'm not going to get that

Just a thought: the pre-purchase availability of the powersets is a shrewd move, I think. Basically, not everyone will go for that (I'd say most won't - look how good the complete collection is), so it turns the folks who do go for it into walking ads for Going Rogue. They'll be out there teaming, playing with folks, showing off, etc.
-
You know, it could be worse. They could have pre-order goodies from 50 different stores that are all different and only 3 of which are available in Europe, but there's no way anybody could get all of them.
"Pre-order Going Rogue from Kentucky Fried Chicken and get the Colonel Sanders costume set!" -
Quote:What's more disgusting? The fact they're doing it or the fact its probably a viable idea to start with?$30 Expansion (pre-purchasable)
early access to new powersets
$10 Item Pack (basing price on previous item pack costs, subject to change)
$15 month of gameplay
= $55
$40 Complete Edition (not pre-purchasable)
no early powerset access
free item pack
free month
= $40
They're looking to seriously cash in on the pre-purchasable perk of early powerset access. It's kinda disgusting.
I would point out, though, that not everyone will want the item pack. Not that it changes things much overall ($45 for some, $55 for others). And the Complete Edition will come with COH/COV which is of little use to someone who already has it, but is likely why it comes with the free month. -
Right, but that wasn't how I understood the other poster's suggestion. As I understood it, they wanted the traditional, "pre-order, get your goodies, and when the game comes out get everything else."
-
Quote:Because if all I want is the powersets early, I can do a pre-order, get the code, redeem the code, then cancel the pre-order getting my money back. I know a fair number of people who've done this for betas for Star Trek Online, Aion, etc. I'm reasonably sure retailers are getting tired of this, and NCSoft does need to work with their retailer partners, like it or not.Look, I am sorry and mean no DISRESPECT, but this is just Stupid.
This is how it should be.
Pre-Order Complete Collection 39.99$
Get Power Sets early (When pre order code is applied)
Get Goodies (when retail code is applied)
Get 1 Month Free (when retail code is applied)
Pre-Order GR Expansion 29.99$
Get Power Sets early (When Pre Order Code is applied)
Why does it need to be more complicated than that? Seriously WHY?
Well, if the item pack is $10 like the Mac pack, GVE pack, etc., then you can buy it separately. You are paying $10 less than the retail, after all, and will get to enjoy two major features from Going Rogue before anyone else.
