Shield is probably your best bet.
It's very easy to cap a Shield to all positions (Melee/AoE/Ranged); the vast majorty of psi is ranged damage so a Shield has high defence to this
Other options are Elec/Dark/Stone/WillPower. -
Quote:An Ice/Ice Tank could probably outdamage say a DM/SR if the mission was set to -1/x8 with no bosses. The Ice/Ice Tank would have better AoE tools and the mobs would go down easy due to the level - that's the only circumstance I can think of, other than that I'd give it to the Scrapper.I'm gonna need to see proof of this. In 4 years I have never seen an ice tank outdamage a scrapper that was built even halfway competently.
I'm calling you on it:
Prove your claims or don't make them. The AV and GM soloers all have video or screenshot proof of their accomplishments. So far I have seen no such thing from you.
You claim to be able to do things that are either highly improbable, or downright impossible. I'd like to see you PROVE that you did these things.
Screenshots and video are both easy to do, and shouldn't be beyond your capacity.
Thus far, you remind me of the kid that told me his Honda Civic could run a 9 second 1/4 mile, and refused to race me to prove it.
Care to prove you can do what you say you can? -
Quote:I agree with this!Speaking for myself only, I don't think its a problem you endeavour to view things differently from others. That's an admirable trait. What I object to about the way you post is not that you view things differently or build characters in a different way or strive for different goals.
What I object to is the back-handed way in which you insult everyone who doesn't play the way you play. It's all good to have an alternative viewpoint but you seem to ironically enough only consider your own viewpoint to have any merit.
I always used to enjoy your posts - I often didn't agree, but it was nice to see some one championing sets other than the usual and putting across a differant viewpoint.
As with most things in life though "it's not what you do it's the way that you do it".
Keep doing what you,re doing but have a little more respect for others and their veiwpoint; there's alot of good advice and experience on these forums - take it on board and learn from it yourself.
If you reach an impasse with some one, just agree to disagree.
On a side note I really think that you should make an FM/SD scrapper - once it's IO'd great damage and survivability. I thought my SD/SS Tank was good damage but these are something else. -
Quote:My Shield/SS was soloing at +2/x8 from the 30's onwards with just SO's and the Steadfast Def/Res unique so you should have no issues at all doing the same. Thanks a bunch of importing/exporting that data. And for the input. That build you suggest looks good but like i said would require several respecs. I do however have most of the IOs already along with an extra lotg +rech. I prefer flight though as a travel power though. In a few weeks I will be getting my 60 month and gonna be eventually respecing out of air superiority anyhow to open another power elsewhere.
When I17 gets released with it's freespec and i have that 60 monther, i will give this another go and see what i can do. If nothing else to preserve the higher priced IOs i can soak the cost of the cheaper sets and buy the other stuff i need.
Gonna be testing that build x8 team this weekend soloing to see how it holds up. then slowly adding +1s to lv of mobs. we will see how that goes.
thanks.
SJ
The easiest way to cap defence is to go for Focused Accuracy from Energy Mastery Epic and slot it with a set of Gaussians, this plus the Steadfast Def/Res unique will cap defence to all positions.
You can then pick your other IO sets based on any additional benefits you require - recharge, regen etc. -
Quote:That's why I suggested these builds - they are so easy to softcap that the dev's would need to remove pretty much all defence bonuses from the IO sets to stop you capping.Thank you. Again, I am not trying to softcap. It will turn into a crutch for me. I would be very surprised if the ability to softcap every freaking toon in this game does not get adjusted. I would rather not use it to hold up my toon.
I am not shaking my finger at anyone else, more power to you. I just remember how much my nose got out of joint when burn, ih, ih, ih (did I say ih?) were adjusted.
SD
The reason I made an SD tank and not a scrapper was the ease of softcapping - go for an SD/SS tank. Very easy to softcap and great damage. -
Quote:A Shield Tank is very easy to softcap and does very good damage. How survivable is a shield toon(scrapper for sake of argument) without being softcapped? How does it measure up to say fire? I understand, it is kinda like comparing apples to oranges, however, I dont want to lvl up a shield toon, build for softcap, then get all indignant when the availability to have a softcapped toon gets "adjusted".
I guess I am asking if it is a good all around set, or only nice when softcapped?
Thank you,
SD
SR for a scrapper is the easiest to softcap on a scrapper - obviously no damage buff or Shield Charge but very survivable, so with say FM good damage too.
Both can be capped with standard L50 IOs, a set of Gaussians and the Def/Res Unique. -
Quote:Gravity is OK but not great.Looking at Mids I would assume that Gravity would be the best primary for solo (I actually thought you were going to tell me that) am I wrong in thinking this? Thank you for the help
I guess I was posting the above when you posted LM. Thank you for your input. I may have to make more than one to see what I like the best.
Plant, Fire and Illusion are your best options.
Plant with Storm, Rad or Kin
Fire agian with Storm, Rad or Kin. I'd also include Forcefields although it takes off a little later with Dispersion Bubble and Imps. Fire does great damage already and FF makes the Imps very survivable, Dispersion bubble gives you Mezz protection and good defence that you can stack with the fighting pool.
Illusion with Rad, Storm or Kin
There are other good combos but these are the best IMO. -
Ill/Rad is probably the most rounded and most powerful combinations - AV soloer
Ill/Emp is probably the ultimate healer in the game. Illusion is quite a passive primary - drop the pets for control and then use Superior Invisability to go places other healers can't and concentrate on the healing/buffing.
Ill/Kin - is probably the ultimate scrapptroller in the game - passive primary allows you to concentrate on personall buffs and attacking via Epics. Works best with Stone Epic.
So really depends on what you want from the alt - they each offer and play completely differently. -
Quote:This pretty much ties in with my experience; I've never taken any damage during the animation with Stalagmites. To the OP:
When I was playing my Fire/Rad regularly (several years ago) Flash Fires did often provoke an alpha strike during the animation. I was able to mitigate it a good deal by casting it at maximum range and using Smoke first. I don't know if it's changed since I was using it regularly.
With Flash Fire however the ground starts to flicker during the animation and the mob reacts, sometimes they start to run but occasionaly I've taken damage.
Could be partly down to slopiness on my part by getting a little too close but as I said never had it with Stalagmites - certainly the better stun of the two.
Wormhole..hhhhhmmmm......fun but poor for general use!! -
-
Quote:I'll check, it's been a while since I've played one of my Fire trollers, I'm pretty certain they are notified as I can remember being surprised by them looking at me or running during the activation.I've never gotten an alpha from trying to fire off Flashfire. The animation might start but the mobs don't get notified until the stun triggers afaik. Unlike Wormhole which has a specific (2.7 second now I check on it) delay built into the stun.
I'll check though to make sure its not just old age settting in -
Quote:As you activate FF the ground flickers and smolders during which the mob starts to react.Flashfire doesn't, at least not for my Fire/Rad. Wormhole does indeed, there's a 2 second delay in it triggering. But it's the only one that doesn't need LOS either,
Stalagmites is instantaneous there is no reaction until the mobs is hit. -
Quote:Also Flashfires and Wormhole draw some aggro during activation Stalagmites doesn't.Hmm, I read that as having a bit of a snide tone to it, almost as if one thought I didn't know the meaning of the word mediocre.
Oh well, let's look at some numbers. Controllers have access to 4 AoE stuns: Stalagmites, Flashfire, Wormhole, and Thunder Clap.
- Thunder Clap: 25 foot radius, 45 second recharge, 60% base accuracy, only mag 2, 2.37 second activation.
- Wormhole: 15 foot radius, 90 second recharge, 75% base accuracy, mag 3, 14.5 mag knockback, and enemy teleport, 3 second activation.
- Flashfire: 25 foot radius, 90 second recharge, 60% base accuracy, mag 3 stun, 2.37 second activation.
- Stalagmites: 25 foot radius, 90 second recharge, 60% base accuracy, mag 3 stun, -20% defense debuff, 2.1 second activation.
Stalagmites is the same as all the other stuns in recharge, save Thunder Clap which is only a mag 2 stun and PBAoE. It beats all other stuns in its activation times. It offers a considerable secondary benefit in a defense debuff. It can be used without worrying about placement, unlike Wormhole.
It may only be better than the others by a bit, but it still remains the best AoE stun available to controllers.
Edit: I forgot about Fissure, with its 50% chance for a mag 2 stun, and Repulsion Bomb, with a 40% chance of a mag 2 stun. -
Quote:Fire/FF works very well, I actually find that it solo's better than my Fire/Rad - both about L40.I'd stay away from FF for soloing, as everyone has said before me, there are better sets for soloing, though FF and grav do seem to go together well.
Bubbled fire monkeys are very survivable and means you can let them take the alpha without losing one or more.
I find the damage is good and FF keeps you and the pets alot safer. -
Hi All,
I've always assumed that as per the descriptions, outside of Dispersion bubble (defence to all) FF offers no protection to Psi damage.
However I was looking at Red Tomax a short while ago and it described Insultation shield as also offering Ranged and AoE defence - as most Psi is ranged does this mean that FF does indeed offer Psi defence?

Quote:My comments are partly based on the old SK system when I've joined teams and not had an SK available. Using an Earth/Rad against +4/5 Council can be a painful experience; I spent half the time hiding behind boxes.Much of that "aggro magnet" problem can be eliminated, even in the lowest levels, using the right strategy and the combo of Stone Cages and Radiation Infection. Let the tank or scrapper go in first to draw the aggro, then throw down Qucksand, Rad Inf and Stone Cages. (Quicksand before Cages for the -Defense.) Keep the Cages up and let your teammates clean up.
Fighting Red Caps can also be an issue where there is no cover and damage coming in from 360 degrees.
Earth/Rad is nice but I stand by my comment for team and personal survival an Earth/FF or even a an Earth/Cold would be preferable to an Earth/Rad -obviously IMO -
If you don't mind buffing I'd go with /FF.
Personaly I find my Earth/Rad to be an aggro magnet having so much AoE. Going FF would give you some personal mitigation, reduce the aggro and still allow you to be very effective.
Earth is a busy primary so you wouldn't be short of thing to do..
IMO Earth/FF gives the most damage mitigation of all Controller combos. -
Quote:I'm with Lucky666 on this, I've got a number of /Rad controllers all have Hasten and AM and none are perm using SO's or even L50 IO's.Ok, since you belive that I have to show you numbers, instead of showing you in person, you can keep your money.I dont need a moron back peddling on his own 100 million influence deal for proof.
What person tells me "Show me the Build first" when that person was just told they could be shown, to there face, in front of God and everyone in CoH that Perma-Hasten and Perma-AM, is possible using SOs.
You are very arrogant, and one of the most ignorant posters iv seen on these forums, and I seriously dout you even have 100 million in the first place to pay for it.
Im done with you, enjoy the lack of knowledge you seem to possess. As if your name doesnt tell us how ignorant you are in the first place.
The only alt that I have with Perma Hasten is my Ill/Kin - that has got Hasten and about 100% Global recharge and even then I need to stack Siphon Speed to get Hasten perm. -
Radiation, TA or Storm are the best options in my opinion - Grav is light on control and needs the extra control from the secondary.
/FF is nice as a concept but can be frustrating as once the bubbles are out you're stuck with the limitation of Grav. -

Hi all,
I'm looking to make exemp builds for a couple of my level 50s and wanted some clarification how this works in relation to set bonuses.
Are there any guides or links I can look at?
Thanks -
Quote:I'm surprised there are no guides - I believe that it used to be a PVP favourite.ok, my new def is a RAD/PSI....... and i have never seen a write up on it. now i will continue to level this toon regardless of "supposed effectiveness", but i would love to hear some insight from folks who have made one before, if there are any
if not, and NO ONE HAS EVER MADE ONE BEFORE!!! i may write a guide afterward. i have no idea how to write a guide, so save me from that horrible fate and let me know what you guys (and gals) think.
Look at some of the older guides or ask on the PVP forum. -
Quote:Grant Cover gives you debuff resistance to Defence and Recharge so I wouldn't drop that. So, I've been messing around in Mids some more... if I only leave out 1 from my primary (Grant Cover) and 2 from my secondary (1 attack and either taunt or build up, most likely), I've still got a very tight build if attempting to get Weave, CJ/SJ, and Stamina. What would you think of picking up Maneuvers early on and respec'ing out of it for Weave later? Or does anyone have another suggestion for powers that are skipable/put-off-able in SD?
I would leave maneuvers all together.
It's usually best to leave more of the secondary,as long as you have an attack chain. -
Quote:Out of interest how much recharge is needed and how much was it?I didn't even take a APP because I couldn't fit in all the powers I wanted on my SD/SS tank. It definetly the most fun I have had with any toon. I even managed to get my recharge high enough to have perma One with the Shield which makes him practically unkillable.
