Quote:Yeah, it is definitely not one for kids, but IMO, it still deserves a recommendation, cos it's good. A note can always be made next to it if the list ever gets updatedI like RIN (I own the DVDs but am thinking about selling them so I can get the Blu-Ray). I would +1 it but I'm not sure if it's appropriate for this list. It contains not only blood and gore but there is about one sex scene per episode (haven't seen it in a wile so I could be wrong). It's not a hentai, but it is a mature (TV MA) title.
Also, why not another suggestion:
Tsukikage Ran - A beautiful female ronin with a taste for gratuitous amounts of sake wanders Japan accompanied by a rather ditzy martial artist. Hilarity ensues. A fun, pretty lighthearted series, focusing mainly on the (usually amusing) interaction between the two leads. Sadly, there's only 13 episodes -
Quote:I see this complaint about avoidance based characters a lot, both here and in other game, and I have to say, from my experience, it's not something to be worried about. A streak bad enough to kill you is very unlikely, so you can pretty much ignore it, and if you do die once in a blue moon, so what?Does Stone Armor with both defense and resistance cap count?
As people have pointed out, a resistance capped character at 90% is far tougher than a defense capped character simply because they never have to worry about that lottery hit that will one shot kill them. Remember, if you have 20 bad guys surrounding you 1 of them is statistically going to hit every round of attacks, and if you get a bad luck streak you will instantly die if +def is your only defense.
On the other hand def does have one big advantage over res - non-damaging effects (eg CC, debuffs etc) can be avoided along with damage.
To support what others have said, in the end, the best way to stay alive is layered protection - two or more of defense, resistance and healing and/or the equivalent debuffs. -
Your maths seems a bit off there.
50% res is not equivalent to 2 out of 20 mobs hitting you, it's eqivalent to 10/20 mobs hitting you (i.e. half damage). For the same amount of damage reduction though defense, you'd need 25% def, which is half of the res number. To mitigate 18/20 mobs worth of damage (ie the equivalent of 2 hitting you), you'd need (18/20*100) = 90% res.
Actually, this makes me notice another semi-error. Thinking of 45% def as equals 1/20 hitting isn't really a good way to go about it. Because the base chance to hit is 50% anyway, while it does mean that only 5% of mobs will hit you, the reduction in incoming damage, which is what matters, is ((1-5/50)*100) = 90%, or 1/10 of the attacks that would have otherwise hit.
The easy way to look at it is this. 50% of attacks miss anyway, so each point of defense reduces the number of attacks that hit you by ((1/50)*100) = 2%. 2% less attacks hitting you is the same as taking 2% less damage from each attack, thus 1 def = 2 res.
There are of course other factors regarding which is worth more, but for just damage mitigation, it's a decent rule of thumb. Also it doesn't consider the effects of stacking with existing sources - 1 point of def on top of 40% def is worth much more than 2 points of res on top of 0% res.
In terms of resist based comparing to defenses, well, it really depends on what level you're looking at it. With SOs only, yes. Inv. in particular, while it does have some defense, can reach 90% resistance to SL (the two most common damages) on a tank (and perhaps a brute, I forget the exact numbers), which is as good as softcapped SL def, something very very few SO builds can achieve. The other res sets can achieve comparable mitigation to the defense sets. The problem comes when using IOs to boost defense. Firstly, res bonuses are small and less common that def ones, and secondly, for everyone other than Tanks and Brutes, the res cap is lower that 90% (75% for most ATs), and as such the maximum mitigation achievable through resistances is less than that achievable through defense. -
Quote:My level 35ish Dominator recently got asked to join a Tin Mage TF...I had a 'stupid tell' the other day. Some bozo sent me a tell asking if I wanted to participate in a Hamidon Raid. Presumably he found me using the Search window. I say "presumably" because the Search window would list my level and he would see that I was TOO LOW LEVEL to get into the Hive. Sheesh.

Quote:Forts have redraw issues when using the claw attacks mixed with other ones, NWs don't.I'm not familiar enough though with the Widow side of things to know if they also have any sort of Weapon Draw issues of any kind when mixing and matching their pre-24 and post-24 branch powers.
And I would definitely love this to be fixed.
When it comes to actual customisation, I'm not that bothered with regards to recolouring and so on, I just want to be able to use all the claw options that other ATs get on my Fort. -
Just beat her on my Fort for the first time - 'twas easy. Kept an eye on my melee defense, every time (thrice) it dropped below 45, I popped a purple. Only had to use Aid Self once. I was kinda expecting worse...
-
Quote:Hehe, can't say I'm that surprised, even though I love it. It is a rather divisive show. It's become something of a ritual to show the latest episode at the end of our university anime society's weekly meetings. Half the people leave early, the other half of us are, to put it mildly, obsessedI tried to watch Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt............. (facepalm) -1
Anyway, another recommendation:
Mnemosyne (aka RIN - Daughters of Mnemosyne) - Well, I'll just hand you over to TVTropes who, as is often the case, sum it up better than i can: "All in all, the series is a total seinen bait, featuring nigh everything older male audiences' hearts may desire: cute girls, respectable guys, Mind Screw of a plot, alcohol and blood in equal proportions, a considerable amount of Girls Love... and both types of sex, take your pick. And all of the above without ever going over the top with it. Be prepared to wince a couple of times, though." Very definitely a +1 from me -
Sadly, the amount of regen is pretty small and, after AV resistances have been taken into account, really isn't worth it. The extra damage you'd be getting from better attacks (melee, gloom etc) compared to PD far outstrips that caused by the -regen.
-
This is what I've gone for on my fort:
Excellent single target damage (all melee, the ranged attacks aren't great), decent AoE, plenty of team buffs and a nice helping of control on the side. Alpha slot is cardiac.

Quote:A Fort's ST damage is only fractionally lower than a Widow's. (The full numbers and chains are here for those interested).Nightwidows have great ST damage, mediocre AoE damage, easily perma-able Mind Link, and other team buffs.
Fortunatas have decent ST damage, decent AoE damage, decent control, and other team buffs, takes more effort to perma mind link.
Basically, apart from quicker ML recharge, there's very little a Widow has over a Fort. -
I don't mind things being hard, if they're hard in an interesting way. BM, Director 11 etc, they're fine IMO. They mix things up, add new challenges. Maybe a few tweaks needed, but overall, I have no real issues. Level 54 Malta aren't. Bobcat suddenly hitting me for 10 times what she used (ie in the pre-incarnate content) to is not. Just boosting enemy stats purely for the sake of "challenge" is, IMO, unfun, particularly if, as in this case, there's no lore reason for it. The devs were going on about us being more powerful, but instead, we feel weaker, as stuff we could easily beat before is now, without any explanation, much stronger than us.
-
Quote:Just to note, I did indeed go for cardiac, and it's beautiful. Even with 6 toggles and an attack chain built around perma-hasten levels of recharge, I only drop below max end if I'm being sappedSame for my Fort. Perma-ML and Hasten, so rech is of little use, but her end consumption is ridiculous.
-
It's not so much an uncommon powerset combination, but it does seem to be an uncommon build, so I'll recommend the melee-Fortunata. Forget about all those ranged attacks that "normal" Forts take and instead go for the claw attacks from the night widow set. Add in the armours, buffs and controls to taste, and you've got a pretty unusual character that's probably the most enjoyable one I've ever played.

Been watching more stuff:
El Cazador De La Bruja - Deja vu.....it's a Bee Train series featuring two female leads and a lot of gunfights. Where have I seen that before...Unsuprisingly, if you liked Noir and Madlax, you'll like this one too. If you didn't, then you might still like it, as Cazador has a more straightforward plot and a general feeling of lightheartedness compared to it's predecessors. Mainly cos of these two reasons, I don't rate it quite as highly as them, but it's still well worth watching. And it has tacos.
Shakugan no Shana - High school student witnesses a magical battle, meets an odd girl and discovers he's dead and is basically a ghost. A mix of supernatural fight scenes, teenage romance and school hijinx follow. Nothing groundbreaking or outstanding, but reasonably enjoyable non-the-less.
Panty and Stocking - I know I mentioned this before, but after another half-a-dozen or so episodes I have to comment again. To summarise: Two angels with underwear that turns into weapons fight ghosts (and sometimes their evil counterparts) for money while spending their free time eating, bickering and having sex. And frankly, it just gets worse every episode. And at the same time better. If you get what I mean. If not, just watch it and you'll understand. -
It's a great power, and anyone who kicks you straight off for using it is not someone who you'd want to team with. However, if they had asked you to stop using it (even if they're "wrong" for doing so), and you continued to use it, then, IMO, you deserved the kicking
-
Personally, I'm not that keen on Dark/Dark. Don't get me wrong, they're both great sets, but they just don't go that well together, no matter how thematically right it seems. Basically, there's too much overlap - healing, To Hit Debuff etc. IMO, Dark blast goes much better with sets like Storm or Cold, while Dark Miasma is more suited to blasts like Ice, Sonic or (for Corrs) Fire.
-
My first 50 from each side oddly enough:
1) BS/Regen Scrapper. I had a break from the game for about 5-6 months at one point, and when I got back, I just could not play this character anymore. Dunno what it was about her, but I didn't get any pleasure.
2) Fire/Trap Corruptor. Made back in the days of the proc bomb. It was beautiful. Then it got nerfed (or fixed depending on your POV), and the character just lost interest for me. To be honest, I wasn't really into him before that, just that dropping a poison trap in the middle of a group of mobs and watching all of them puke and die was funny. He was approx level 40 at the time, and ended up sitting on a shelf until the days of AE farming, where I ground him up to 50 over a weekend to unlock VEATs.
Some others I don't play much, like my DB/SR scrapper - not that I dislike her, but my melee Fortunata is pretty similar in playstyle but much more fun. -
My Fortunata (melee build), no question about it. Far and away the most fun character I've played in CoX.
-
Quote:Same for my Fort. Perma-ML and Hasten, so rech is of little use, but her end consumption is ridiculous.Cardiac. My Widow is swimming in recharge, and I do plenty of DPS. More is nice, sure, but my problem is she drains her end bar like there's no tomorrow, even though I've slotted for end reduction fairly aggressively and have all the usual recovery toys. Her end consumption is her one glaring weakness, and Cardiac line will address that nicely.
(If you want to see what the Cardiac line would be like, roughly, and you have the Mutant booster pack, see how your Widow plays if you can get Mutation: Pain Tolerance. It gives 30% global end reduction.) -
Very funny, but I can't quite see how it's offensive...
-
-
It applies just after the initial hit of damage. Which means that for most of the attacks, it doesn't affect them, but for the Tier 2 blast (I always get the names muddled up), which is a DoT (albeit a quick one), the does increase the damage from the latter ticks.
-
Quote:Yeah, that's great fun. +1 from me too.Been meaning to mention this for a bit, but:
High School of the Dead +1
I mean let's be honest, this is a fan service title above anything else. The fact it's a fan service title set in a Zombie Apocalypse just adds to the fun. It also has a solid story and some fun action. Save for a story swap and some minor pacing alterations, it's a solid adaption of the Manga.
Thank you for the time...
Some other stuff I've watched recently:
Unlimited Blade Works - FateStay Night on crack. Probably incomprehensible to anyone who hasn't played the FSN game, it's nevertheless incredibly awesome to those of us who have
SRW OG - The Inspector - So far, it's a bit disappointing. Not bad, but nowhere near as good as Divine Wars. That said, there's still plenty of time for it to pick up.
Panty and Stocking - Gainax just broke my mind. In a very very very good way.
