This is also not the only SG-only based Vet Reward: the comic cover posters, Base Teleporter power, the weapons cases, and the Arachnos/Longbow item. The +10% Prestige actually makes it only the second somewhat useful SG ability (the other being Base Teleporter power). I have no problem with this at all, even if it will be almost 3 years before I get this badge/ability.

  4. You have to remember this: Posi said that this Alpha Slot thing wasn't exemplaring... which means in a team of 8 50's who all had this Alpha Slot, guess how many got the benefits from this Alpha Slot?

If you said 8, then you need to read up on "Super Sidekicking"... because your answer is WRONG!!!

The SSK system auto bumps everyone to 1 level below the Team Leader... but it also auto-exemplars to 1 level below the Team Leader; that means the other 7 50's on that team are auto-exemplared to 49 (thus not Level 50 to take advantage of this Alpha Slot). The only true 50 on that team of 8 is the Team Leader in the eyes of the programming... which is the problem.

If all the stuff pertaining to the Alpha Slot is given/used by Level 50's only, then SSK just makes it a HUGE disincentive to team because your 50 is not treated as a 50 on that team, even with members of that team who are all 50s as well. If that Alpha Slot does not exemplar or you cannot progress on this Alpha Slot while on a team because the system treats you as a 49 and the Incarnate stuff has to be received at Level 50 only, then why would you team if it would screw you out of your Alpha stuff?

So, if it was kept as is, then it becomes a major disincentive to teaming. If they changed it so that it could exemplar, that means that the content would have to be made 45-50, not 50 only (because of the +5 rule on powers/enhancement effectiveness retention in SSK) and not the "Level 50 only system" they intended it to be, thus losing a bit of the impact that the devs have planned for this system, and since there is a LOT more than just this teaser in GR, they want to make sure the rest of the stuff in GR is as bug free as possible and probably could not get this system fully working in the remaining month they have before release... for all we know, they could be having so many bugs in Beta that if they don't concentrate on them then the release gets pushed back... and that would be worse than if they pull this Alpha Slot stuff out now.

Likewise, it did come with a goodie (free Cyborg or Magic booster) and 30-days of playtime so it was actually a good buy for existing players. I bought the GVE box for similar reasons. On top of that its a newer retail box to keep the game on shelves and looking fresh plus advertising new features of the game (retail boxes are basically advertising for a product)
However, they could have made the Architect system only available through buying the Architect Edition and left everything else for the free release... if they weren't trying to lure back previous players with I14, why did they have a reactivation/Double XP weekend a few weeks after release? Since AE was given free to everyone, even if AE DID bring them back to the game they didn't have to pay anything to get it... in other words a guaranteed lost $20 by not forcing the purchase like they are doing with GR.

    Quote:
The GR box is intended to be a good starting point for new players, and likewise provides a nice value for existing players. COH/COV plus 30 days of gametime ($15 if nothing else), GR ($30 if bought ala cart), plus the goodie booster (how much was that again?) and updated discs. Having it "all-in-one" like that is smart since new players only need to buy one thing - no searching for a regular COH/COV box plus picking up GR. Likewise, for only $10 more than buying GR only, existing players get gametime, discs and a goodie pack.

I think they're being pretty smart about it, myself.

edit: I strongly suspect GR would not have happened as a single free expansion. It seems like its way too big with too much work behind it. Having all that content and such gated behind a paid expansion makes sense to me - it lets them make something significantly larger than a single update (easily equal to several, methinks) and have it pay for itself.
And the Architect Edition wasn't a good starting point, since it had CoH, CoV plus the touted Architect mission creation system as well as HALF THE PRICE POINT OF GOING ROGUE?!? If Marketing is "being smart" with Going Rogue, when it came to Architect Edition then Marketing was "being not smart".

It means that you cannot switch alignments until you drop $30-$40 for GR... if you already have pre-purchased or buy the physical disc, you'll be able to use the full system (which Tip missions sound a part of, but not the whole thing) and switch alignments.

The problem is that the AE stuff was the core focus of the marketing of the physical purchase, yet it was given away free regardless.

This isn't a dev problem... it's a marketing problem; I14 they basically gave away the big focus of the devs' hard work to the masses without relying on the purchase, thus costing sales. Marketing has now gone the polar opposite; giving practically nothing for free and force you to play twice as much (GR box is $40, AE box was $20) because they'll be bringing in MORE money. It's like the Marketing department can't make up their mind or even find a happy medium.

COP is a nice addition, good to see all that previously completed work put back in to the game.

Of course i18 was going to be bleak and it is. Here's hoping the GR feature list is huge, which is going to be a lot of content to jam in to 1-20. The disappointment meter is climbing.
The way it sounds though that you run these tip/pseudo paper missions and when you hit the limit to run the morality mission (5/10/25?), you can't even run the morality mission unless you purchase GR (the morality mission is probably something like a soloable mini TF/arc that when you finish it you become the new alignment).

I think that 95-97% of the actual additional content for the game will reside in the expansion.

Sure, the Cathedral of Pain is nice, but what's the point if bases still (for lack of a better word) suck? Unless Base Raids are put back, this feature is pretty useless. I'm sure that some people will play it, just to see what the Devs have done but, once the hype dies down, no one will be running it.

Once again, I really hope that I'm wrong but, so far, color me disappointed.

Seriously, I have been going over the list of everything and the free portion of Issue 18 is quite underwhelming. First off, a majority of the "features" could very easily just have been added in as a patch without a tie in to the purchase. Seriously, they can merge the market at any time and additions are made to AE all the time outside of Issue releases, so making them "features" of the free portion of the issue is not exciting.

The CoP: even revamped, will people still need the base item to get the mission or will it be made as a contact outside of bases like Silver Mantis? If you still need bases, then this becomes a gated TF (gated in that you have to 1) Have a SG base and 2) Have the item that gives you the CoP within the base).

These Tip missions according to ViDoc 2 sound like they lead to these Morality missions which then set you up to switch alignments somehow (which is only available to do if you buy GR, since Ghost Falcon said you cannot side switch without purchasing GR)... is it just me, or does this sound like a variation of the scanner/paper mission setup but once your bar's full you can't get the Safeguard/Mayhem mission until you pony up the cash? So in other words, you're progressing to nowhere until you pay $30-$40?

In comparison to other free issues released in conjunction with a new physical product, I18: Shades of Gray is the smallest and least impressive of them all, and probably ranks near the very bottom of all free issues in terms of overall content.

As for those free Issues tied to physical products, the scale right now is this in terms of content:

    I6 > I14 > I18

The wolf tail SHOULD be free as it fits thematically with already free costume pieces and does not match thematically with any of the other costume pieces in the mutant pack.

Yes, Posi did say that "those sound like they would be part of a Mutant Pack, not Natural"... all that meant was that animalistic pieces would be more fitting for a Mutant Pack as opposed to being in the Natural pack, not that there would necessarily actually be any animal pieces in said Mutant Pack. People read too much into that statement and assumed that the Mutant Pack would be heavily animal-based.

For all we know, they could do more animal pieces for the next round of Origin based boosters if they go that sort of theme (animal pieces could also fit into the Science catagory as well, not just Mutant, and be called the Experiment Booster or something like that).

I believe that statement came out after the picture of the guy in the glowing armor from Going Rogue was released, so Posi could have possibly be referring to glowy pieces, since some people DID say that they wanted the glowy pieces, and Bioluminescence is indeed "glowy parts". Until Posi actually comes in and says what he meant by that statement, this is simple speculation and should not be considered truth by any means.

When I went to pre-order my GR Complete Collection discs (I have two accounts), I wasn't told September 1st, but rather 1st week of September. The addition of the tail for one..isn't about trying to get more people to buy the pack, its just the way they chose to get it into the game.
Personally, I feel it is about getting more people to buy the pack... there have been much grousing that the Mutant Pack lacked animalistic pieces already and have stated they weren't impressed or interested in the Mutant Pack... but as soon as the Wolf Tail was announced, more positive interest was garnered for the Mutant Pack.

    Quote:
Not saying I agree with their decision, because I don't. I think the tail should definitely be a freebie for everyone, but its not..so **** it. As far as the ."oh they're failing, noone will buy the pack." yada yada...Someone will but the thing..I know I'm going to.. I've bought everyone.. including the wedding pack. Guess what....if they show it to 5 people and at least 3 buy it..they're happy. Those other two people..well.. maybe next time. if not.. not really a big deal. All I'm saying is not everybooster pack will be something everyone likes, it happens..and honestly.. no one cares. Read above statement involving 5 people.
But what if they went to that hypothetical two non-buyers and asked, "Would you buy it if we added a wolf tail?"... what if adding it just became the dealbreaker for those two? That's two more sales they wouldn't have, and using your "5 people" theory, that would equate to a potential 67% increase in pack sales. Like it or not, the addition of the wolf tail has significantly increased interest in this pack... which may wind up setting a bad precedent.

Personally, I am also in the camp of "the wolf tail should have been added to a free game addition/patch (like Issue 18)", for the main reason of IT STICKS OUT LIKE A SORE THUMB COMPARED TO EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE PACK!!! How does a wolf tail tie into anything else that has been presented so far in the set? It doesn't.

All the previous Booster Packs had a thematic flow with everything else in the pack; throwing the Wolf Tail into the Mutant Pack skews the Pack's thematic flow and it is woefully out of place.

  23. There is an interesting problem with this contest:

When you ask a question on Formspring, you only have 255 characters to ask it; with all the information and the boilerplate release that you have to post in the body of the question for the contest, that boilerplate alone is over 255 characters and there isn't any room for the question or even all of the information needed. The only way to actually get all of that information to them is the alternate way of entry (snail mail). Unless they have a way to disable that 255 character requirement on Formspring, the first method is basically impossible.
