I think that the biggest problem facing Castle in trying to 'fix' EM is that he faces two separate problems. Those who want it to remain a fast set and aren't as concerned with DPS and those who want it to regain its former place as the ST DPS King.

It appears to me that if Castle were to attempt to 'fix' EM he'd have to decide which of those camps he wants to satisfy. This would almost certainly anger the players in the other camp.

If ET were returned to its former animation and then reduced significantly in damage to a level appropriate to its animation time and then Stun was given the Clobber/Cobra Strike treatment, it might give EM a decent level of DPS and return the feel of a fast set.

This would have probably been the best solution if they'd done it back then. If he tried it now then we'll inevitably get some people complaining about the loss of ETs current animation. So I think that at this point Castle has put himself into the infamous 'Damned if you do and damned if you don't' situation.

The problem, as you well know, is that no one except the devs has those numbers. Your attempt to calculate those numbers is a fallacy because your starting numbers are just unknown guesses. Your percentages of what 'players will do what' are just guesses. Of who will use which names are just guesses.

In short, your numbers aren't "solid calculations", they're just a series of guesses.

And I have to say that I'm really surprised at your behavior in this thread Rachel. You've always had your opinions, but you've always stood out in my memory as such a nice and courteous person. A definite rarity on the internet. However, in this thread you've been outright abrasive and rude. I mention it only because you don't seem to be aware that that's how people are perceiving your posts in this thread.
  3. I'm not a huge min/maxer, and I hate bouncing around trying to line up Shadow Maul/Sands of Mu. Plus, Ghost Slaying Axe used to have a really cool "Axe to the face!" animation.

Because of this, most of my characters have the Ghost Slaying Axe. The only exceptions being my Broadsword or Axe characters.

The Axe is great vs CoT ghosts at low levels, and it looks really cool. I definitely recommend it to anyone who can get over that fact that it's not the absolute bestest DPSes.

On the topic though, yeah... I think most of us have known for sometime that there's a problem with this. I remember reading a thread years ago where people were complaining about it and the devs said; "We can't fix this bug because we haven't been able to duplicate it." I think that was the first time I ever saw someone post: "Do the devs even play this game?"

I get LTs and Bosses running from my Energy Melee/Electric Armor Brute. Tell me again how "one of their teammates died too quickly." - To what? I can go AFK and make a sandwich in the time it takes EM to kill a single mob. Oh and my other favorite, "they cannot attack their enemy effectively." My character is Electric Armor! My defense is 0%!! How can they not attack me effectively?

I especially liked Castle's example. "If you're softcapped..." LOLZ!!! People have been complaining about this since before IOs ever existed.

This bug is exactly the reason that almost all of my melee characters and many of my Blasters have Air Superiority. Can't run away if you're picking your face up off the deck.
  5. I'm late to the party, as usual.

I'm quite happy that names are exclusive in CoH/V unlike in 'that other game.'

However, I do feel that the devs should run the script and free up all names, regardless of character level, for all accounts that have remained unsubscribed for 24+ months.

I just don't understand why the wishes of people who aren't paying customers override those of people who are. Just because someone once played CoH/V I don't think they should be able to bogart all of the good names until the end of time.

    So that's my 2 Inf.

    Well, sort of.

Years ago, when people complained about Longbow Eagles not falling to Air Sup in Mayhem Missions, one of the devs said that instead of being given the fly power the mission designer had instead "set them to always fly in the mission/zone rules", or words to that effect.

They then went on to say they'd look into it. That was before Issue 9. Now with Issue 19 coming up, not only have they not looked into it, but it appears that they've propagated this error from those missions to the Alignment Missions. Excellent work there!

You'd think they'd eventually hire someone to take notes and keep their [censored] straight. I guess that'd make too much sense.

P.S. Positron: I'm still waiting for you to add the bank missions from both sides to the Ouroborus Portal, like you said you were going to.

    is MA dead?

I don't know how many times we've said on the forums that the biggest problem with the MA is all of the undeleted farm arcs that are still present.

I regularly report arcs that have the word FARM in the description. When I do so I always get this email: "I am escalating your petition to a Senior Customer Support Representative to further assist you. Please be aware, however, that there may be a delay in reviewing the issue, based on ticket volume at the time your ticket was submitted."

Months later and none of the arcs I've reported have been deleted. That's how much attention they're giving the MA.

I realize that I'm not exactly an authority on PvP in CoH/V, but can someone explain to me how this is going to keep people from getting kills? Or is this just another example of PvPers QQing about everything?

  10. At one point one of the community people, both of whom are gone now so no idea if this will ever happen, said that SGs would be able to run ads using this system.

My guess is that's unlikely to happen either, but you can always PM someone and ask.

I remember those threads with people screaming about how horrible it was that we were getting in game ads. Just like the ones where people screamed about having their characters show up on the City Vault. I hope those people all feel silly now, they certainly should.

Oh and since we're talking about failed ideas, anyone know if they're still playing with the CoH/V MySpace page?

I agree. Energy Melee should be the king of single target damage, currently it is not.

Although I want to say that, contrary to what someone claimed earlier in this thread, I do not believe that ET was nerfed because of complaints about LoL-PvP. I believe that ET was nerfed because it was too powerful to be transferred to Scrappers in its old form. That's why the animation time was changed, because it's the one thing that can't be affected by IOs.

I doubt that Castle will go back and fix Energy Melee any time soon. But then again I never thought he'd ever buff Invulnerability, I was wrong about that. Of course, look how long it took to happen.

    I see your point.

It is a bit odd that Energy Melee has no ranged attacks. What an incredible oversight on the part of the developers that you've spotted there!

Seriously, the problem with Energy Melee is that it was a fast set, people liked it because it was a fast set. But now I can make a sandwich in less time that it takes to use both Energy Transfer and Total Focus.

That's the problem with Energy Melee. Not its lack of ranged attacks.

EDIT: Oh and guys... HelinCarnate wasn't advising people to forget about Energy Transfer and Total Focus while you're on a teams like it was great advice, he was pointing out that the problem with Energy Melee is that you cannot make use of Energy Transfer and Total Focus while on a team. He was pointing out the exact problem, not giving stupid advice. Geez!

    RTTC - Change?

Ok, is it difficult to hold aggro on a Willpower Tanker, especially at lower levels? Yes. Is the problem being blown out of proportion in this thread? Yes.

Can anything currently be done by a player to solve this problem? Yes. Just like giving your Fire Tanker Acrobatics or a KB protection IO, there is something you can do to fix Willpower's aggro problem.

I have a level 50 Willpower/Super Strength Tanker, as well as several other WP Tankers in the 30+ level range. I have Taunt. I have Taunt Enhancements slotted in RttC and in Taunt.

I jump in, Footstomp or Whirling Hands or Fire Sword Circle, and then I Taunt. Rinse and repeat. I'll be happy to give in-game demonstrations. I guarantee you that only another Tanker will be able to pull aggro from my Willpower Tanker.

Ok, that's what I figured. And it's why I included the link to both.

As someone who has both a level 50 SS Tanker and level 50 EM Tanker, I can tell you that SS way out damages EM all day long, and without double-stacking Rage.

I never try to double-stack rage because I hate the huge increase in end drain and those 10 second enforced breaks.

Enough side-tracking myself though, back on topic. No, the devs haven't said why they put so many useless non-damaging powers into the melee attack sets. They do seem to have figured out for themselves that they were bad decisions, and over the last two years or so they've been slowly fixing a lot of the stupider powers.

However, I think we all know that neither EM nor SS are going to be buffed / un-over-nerfed / changed in any way until after they've figured out what they're going to do to port them over to Scrappers.

Enjoy your double-stacked rage while you can.

  16. I am hoping that the speculation about CoH2 is wrong.

Personally I would love to see all of the zones get the Hollows / Going Rogue / branching stories revamp.

    Starting with the Shadow Shards.

The one problem with your otherwise logical argument is that fun is subjective.

I have several Willpower Tankers, and I find the fact that aggro can be hard to hold on to fun. I see it as a challenge.

I'm constantly having to work to hold aggro. On my other Tankers I simply have to walk into the room and everyone is glued to my backside with virtually no effort on my part. Frankly I find that a bit boring.

Count me as definitely in favor of Willpower's aura remaining exactly as is.
  18. As BrandX has pointed out we already have several Ranged/Armor ATs in game. Both VEATS and HEATS. Perhaps the devs consider that the point entirely. They know that people want Ranged characters that are also tough so that's how they designed the Epic ATs on both sides.

The problem, from a player's point of view, is that both sets of Epic ATs are overly specific. What if I don't want to be an Arachnos goon or a weird sea creature looking alien thingy? What if I want my Ranged/Armor AT to be a pulp fiction, Indiana Jones-ish type? I'm out of luck, at least until I get him IO'd out.

But what if they designed a Blaster Secondary that allowed this? Say a Secondary Powerset that contained a handful of Martial Arts moves coupled with a (weak - perhaps only Mag 2 or 3) mez toggle and a Damage Resistance Toggle. Why DR instead of Def? Specifically so that it cannot be stacked with IOs to create a Tankmage that's Def soft-capped to everything.

The secondary wouldn't have Build Up of course, that's the trade off. You'd be sacrificing your burst damage ability in order to gain some survivability and Mez protection.

The loss burst damage means that the power gamers probably wouldn't like this powerset. Since Mez protection doesn't work in PvP the way it does in PvE and this set doesn't have Build Up or Boost Range means that the PvPers probably won't like it either.

So who would like and pick this set? People who just want to play their character the way they envision him/her. RPers and casual PvEers.
  19. Star Trek 11 made more money than any other two Star Trek movies combined. Which means that more people watched that movie than watched the others.

The type of Star Trek fans who liked the garbage that was ST: Nemesis should have done a better job of supporting Star Trek in the only way that counts: with their dollar.

The Star Trek franchise is currently working like a perfect democracy. They're doing what the largest percentage of people want. Sorry if that ain't you, but that's how things work.

And yes, I liked ST11 better than any Star Trek movie since the Wrath of Khan.
  20. To be completely honest I'm torn between "Why bother even posting in the Base Builders Forum, when it's obvious that the devs aren't going to do anything with bases?" and... "ZOMFG!!! Look what they did to PvP!!!! Do we REALLY want those same people looking at bases?!?!?!"

Either way, posting in this forum is a waste of time. The devs aren't going to do anything with bases any time soon, and if they do we won't like it. The changes won't be for our segment anyway. Remember, the devs deliberately encouraged Mad Scientist and others to spend a lot of their time coming up with huge lists just so they could then ignore those lists.

Yeah, remember when I13 was supposed to have big base changes? And then Posi's post: "It's so big we had to split it into two Issues!" Funny how neither of those issues had any of these massive changes for bases. The huge base revamp they were talking about just went quietly away. They wouldn't even answer any of our questions about it. They just ignored our posts like they weren't even there.

The devs ignored the base builders forum for years, we couldn't even get them to admit that this forum existed. Then Sunspot, or whatever his name was, posts a thread talking about some changes. Then he got fired, or whatever happened, and now the base forum is back on perma-ignore.

I don't know why we're even wasting our time posting in this forum at all anymore. I'll tell ya what: screenshot this post and save it, cause I'm gonna make a prediction. Here goes:

We won't get any love for bases in 2011 either.

We discussed this back in 2009, remember? When the devs announced their plans back then I said that they couldn't possibly fit in anything for bases prior to 2011.

And it looks like I was right. Not that it took a rocket scientist or anything to figure it out.

Sorry, but the old-fashioned, out-of-touch English professors that are still trying to force grammar rules from Latin on to English are my pet peeve.

Previous posts have covered just about everything I want, but I'll add my list anyway, just to get more votes in:

Aid Self/Other - An obviously magical animation. A wand / potion / waving hands like casting a spell.

Fire/Ice Swords - A high-tech version of these attacks. Yes I realize that runs the risk of people using them as stand-ins for Light Sabers, I'm sure the animation team is intelligent enough to figure something out.

Other Fire/Ice melee attacks - As others have said, sword versions for consistency, and non-sword versions for the sword attacks for the same reason.

Sword attack for other sets - Why are there no Electric Sword or Energy Sword attacks? Perhaps alternate animations could fix that.

Super Strength and Martial Arts - MA type animations for SS, and SS type animations for MA. Plus 'Street Fighting' type animations for both. I'd love to have a melee character that is obviously super strong, but also obviously has some martial arts training.

Magical and high-tech versions of all blast attacks - A Tech origin Blaster whose Energy Blasts eminate from his high-tech blaster rifle would be nice.

Cooler is better - Just sprucing up many of the animations without improving the powers would make a huge difference. Blaster > Devices > Gun Drone, being an auto-gun that sits on your shoulder like the Predator had would make up for the fact that it sucks. Or Blaster > Munitions Mastery > LRM Rocket, having the rocket fire from a launcher on the back like the Malta Mechs do would make it worth using just for the effects alone.

Eye Beams/Breath Weapons - I have at least one Scrapper who'd have Weapon Mastery > Shuriken if the animation were a pistol shot instead of an antique Shuriken. A Tech Origin Tanker who'd love to have Laser Beam Eyes, if the beam came from his Blaster Pistol instead of his eyes. And it's difficult to justify taking Breath of Fire on any Tech Origin character.

Broadsword > Confront - I'd really like to have the 'Point the sword and challenge your enemy' animation that Katana and Dual Blades has.

Empathy - High-Tech versions of these animations would be nice as well. Perhaps copying that tricorder over from Aid Self/Other for some of them.

Dual Pistols - Some animations that are less Gun Fu/Animae and more Wild West or SWAT team-ish would be nice.

Pets - Here be the mandatory demand for alternate Master Mind pets. I'm tired of the WW1 looking Mercs. I want my Bots to... etc., ad infinitum.

Johnny understands defense just fine. You however appear to have missed his point.

They can't debuff you if they can't hit you in the first place.

And while you are right that Defense does a lot better when it has Defense Debuff Resistance to back it up, everything Johnny said in his post is correct. I've seen it with my own eyes too.

You are correct that Defense works better when it is backed up by DDR, but Johnny is also correct. Characters with mid-range or low Defense get their Defense quickly striped away from them by Debuffers. Characters who are soft-capped don't get hit with those debuff attacks nearly as often. And when they do it happens infrequently enough that they are usually able to do something about it.

Which is, after all, the point behind being at the soft-cap in the first place.

Maybe, but they should still give Stun this treatment. Stun is currently worthless. Why would I ever take it over Air Superiority?

Air Superiority does more damage, has a lower recharge and uses less endurance than Stun. Unlike Stun, Air Sup works on bosses and anyone that is affected by Air Sup isn't going to wander out of Invincibility, RttC or AoC.

Besides, EM could really benefit from having a high damage attack that animates in less time than it takes me to make a sandwich.
  25. Since the devs offered server transfers, a large number of people moved their characters to Freedom and Virtue, leaving the rest of the servers a lot less populated. Which produces hilarious results on 2XP weekends.

However, I was playing on Protector (hero side) just last night with 2 RL friends and another 5 people that I found using the search window.

I had no problem at all recruiting a full team in less than 5 minutes. It can be done, it just takes a little bit more work now.
