Quote:I am way too curious as to what "new" players are going through. When I played early on, we were all in the same situation. There was no vet rewards to worry about. But a new player now would see vets just pull out a wand, or hit sands of mu, or base TP away. I saw that in Voo's regular team where early on we were all using nem staff or such on each group.*raises hand* New guy requesting permission to speak...
I say it would simply be something interesting to look at to compare playstyles from what advantages there are now and "normal" play.
I have thought about this for a while, but just the other day I got on a lowbie pug team redside, and got me thinking even more. I like to check badges and globals of people I never teamed with (). Amazing, the oldest one was a 12 month vet and the rest 6, lower, or even none. And the globals I saw were not in any of the channels I saw. Granted could be multiple accounts, and means nothing.
Okay, will stop threadjacking! -
Eh, I like them and happy to still get them.
As for defense, I would rather not have another buff pet that dies 0.5 sec into every battle.
A quick question for you slightly older vets (since I am at 66 since December), last night while playing, I was debating on starting a new toon with the least I can make from vet rewards and only TO/DO/SO until 50. So no wand/staff/base TP, etc. I won't even take from the SG bins. Just to get that "new" player feel again.
Worth trying? Am I crazy? -
Quote:Voo, please refill your meds...I miss the Paragon Times, even though I was inevitably turned down for an exclusive interview way back when. And that was even *after* I agreed to do the nude photo shoot and supplied some examples.
Edit: ...at least by Tuesday. I'm scared. -
Quote:Having a 50 kin/arch, I can say for me that the redraw was extremely annoying. Biggest problem was that on teams, by the time I got FS then go through the long animation of RoA, most of the mobs were dead and felt the attack wasted....okay...I'm going to do it. I will get a KIN/ to 50. And I'm going to do it as a defender.
My DARK/SONIC is halfway into lvl 44.
I know Dark/ well. I enjoy Dark/ alot.
But...grrrr...I want to make a KIN/. I just don't know what I should stack it with.
Assuming Generic IO slotting (I'll likely slam some sets into it, but just go off the idea that it will just use Generic IOs)...which set should I do?
I was thinking Archery, but the redraw annoys me, though I thought RoA with FS would probably be fun.
So, anything besides Archery or Assault Rifle.
Kin/ice may be a great combo talking with some friends and having played ice on corr (ice/cold) and def (cold/ice).
I will toss out kin/son. I have a 50 son/kin corr and it was a great combination that worked very well soloing and on teams with the attacks and damage buffs. But you said you have played /son, so not sure if you want to do another. -
-
Checking if I can make it. If I can, may be can show Voo the pain of kin/arch!
-
At this time for me, yes, I would be a nightmarish combo.
I admit that I could be biased because my kin/ def is my only arch toon, and that I usually proactive in my buffing with defenders - esp. a kin and its buffs. Had I gone another primary like cold/ or different AT, I may have a better opinion.
I am definitely planning on dual pistol toon and will have to accept redraw depending on the other powers I pick. -
Quote:Good input Masque. Only thing though is that rain of arrow just takes so long to get off. Maybe because when teamed for my kin/ def, by the time I had FS hit and then switch to rain of arrows, most of the mobs were dead or not at the spot where I targetted. It was frustrating in that I felt my best attack was wasted. Cold/ would offer ways to KD or slow mobs to stay in the same general area so that rain of arrows would work better.I also kind of think sleet + rain of arrows sounds like it could be great. I think a great attack chain could be Sleet+Heat Loss+RoA+Fist full of arrows. Then blazing arrow anything still standing.
And just falling back on the redraw that it bugged me greatly. But do understand that others don't even think about it. -
Heh, I view other players on the team as my pets (like an MM)!
And to confused apostrophe boy..er I mean Vd
, I mean solos just fine because she can use her primaries more efficiently with her secondaries - which my emp def can't do, like use AB, Fort, or CM. Picky, picky.

Quote:Not directed at you GP specifically, just commenting/rambling.Whereas my Defender just feels weak. Probably a good reason not throw a Defender there.
I could agree that solo, my emp def feels weak compared to my scrapper. But my emp def also feels very weak to my D3 def, who solos just fine. My grav/FF also feels weak to what I see Ill/rad or fire/kin controllers do. My thugs/PD MM feels weak to my bots/storm MM, but both can solo AV's.
But the thing for me is that when a teamed, my defenders all feel powerful. What good is my /ff contr to IO'd players at the def cap? My MM's can fight AV's with or without other players - I don't feel any more "god-like" with them. My scrapper is just another damage dealer and doesn't offer any more to teams.
And that's the key for defenders when teamed. Do teams actually say if we had one MORE scrapper or tanker or kheld, we could have finished that TF? If a team has 3 controllers, do a 4th add any more damage mitigation? I see defenders though always welcomed.
Bottomline, defenders, when teamed, are never feel weak to me. -
Quote:Going off topic now, but Voo, really... You actually put a ' in '010 in your signature??? Like that is saving typing a 2 instead of a ' ????? Now that's a whole new game.
The power of '010 brings forth Voodoo 2.0. It's a whole new game now.
On topic, cold/arch would be playable, especially solo. I just couldn't stand the redraw when teamed, since my mind set has me using my buffs/debuffs, etc. for the team first rather than attack (like using FS with my kin/ first).

Quote:Having played the ice/cold corr (my favorite corr by far) and now, as you know the cold/ice def route, I would most definitely vote cold/psy.I'd still pick Psy or Archery though as I think the Psy secondary effects would mesh better with Cold, plus Archery is mostly S/L damage.
My reasons:
- From my reading and exp with /psy (emp/psy), it would fit neatly with the cold/ secondary effects.
- Redraw, redraw, redraw. Having leveled up a kin/arch def, it irritated me greatly to buff or use FS, heal, etc. and use attacks. If you are going a team route, you are probably going to take the buffs and debuffs, which would lead to redraw with the bow. And when you finally get the rain of arrows attack, the mobs will be dead by the time you debuff and such and go thru the long animation for the attack. With /psy, it was very seemless between my emp/ buffs and my attacks, and you don't need the nuke. -
Quote:Adding in a few inf to the conversation. I am somewhat of the same thought as EmpireForgotten. On the whole, the OP has appeal to me, but the backlash from a large portion (vast majority?) of the population could be too great.Addressing the OP: I kinda like the Idea, but I don't think you can make PvP attractive enough for the PvE crowd. The anger that would ensue from people feeling forced to PvP to get their PvE stuff would be great. It irritates me that I have to PvE in order to PvP, but im in the minority.
There have been a number of other threads regarding PvP and changes. For me, I would work within the current zones/content rather than expand to a new zone(s). I posted some thoughts I had before here and some more previously. I still feel that a server/community change in attitude towards PvP should be addressed before addition of new zones. This will give better justification to the devs for time/resource put into these new zones. -
Interested in these definitely (emp, dark, kin, and soon to be cold at 50). Not sure about this weekend unfortunately.
But will be watching the forums!

Quote:Because it doesn't seem to sink in that different powers bring different effects. Why is it that the people who start these "my defender can't do enough damage" threads always seem to use as their example one of the defender primaries that contributes basically nothing to their own damage output?
Why is my grav/ff controller unable to solo AVs like an ill/rad controller? Using the OP's logic, they are both controllers, therefore, must be able to do the same.
What about my thugs/PD MM vs. my bots/storm MM? In my experience they were vastly different in what they could do. Again, using the OP's logic, they should be the same and something must be wrong.
The devs, IMO, took this into account when designing the sets - diversity. -
Quote:This is my thought exactly. My D3 def could solo EB's. My kin def solo'd EB's. I tried my soon to be 50 cold/ice def and could do it with some help of inspirations. My friend's rad had no issues I can recall. Now my emp/psi defender had issues, but not when I had a shivan to drop and buff up.I understand that your greater point isn't this one specific instance of your FF/Nrg vs. this specific EB; your point is that Defender damage, for the AT as a whole, is underperforming. However, you then state that both Kin/ and Rad/ characters don't have this problem. Therefore, the problem isn't with the AT as a whole. The "problem" is with specific powerset combos.
Quote:Within each AT, there are powerset combos (aided by smart IO slotting) which will allow you to "break the rules" of those ATs.
I call this synergy like a D3. Some combinations work very nicely and smoothly together, bringing a greater effect.
The OP has to learn to play the ENTIRE AT, not just the secondary. There are more than this one EB out there. Some ATs/combos would struggle against them. Having a FF/ def along would greatly increase the chance of beating it - it is what defenders do FOR TEAMS that is their greater asset. Just look at the name - defender - what good is defending if you are by yourself? I am still amazed that the OP takes so many other powers. I just have health and travel powers on a lot of my defenders, and some leadership I take in the late 40's for things like the STF.
And just to be in the ultra-tiny minority, I don't have issues with the end cost vs. damage due to our inheret and teaming. I am already aware of all the threads debating this so won't bother here. -
Anyhow with the announcement here, I was curious if any Victory-ites (sp?) are making some room for GR. I am looking to free some slots up and didn't know a good place to call home-away-from-home.
Probably will avoid the 2 big servers. Any one got some ideas? -
