I have to say I am also in the camp that finds Arachnos and Recluse terribly overused redside.
I don't see why we have to have such a huge Arachnos & Longbow presence. It would be like Paragon City having PPD everywhere and in such large numbers, controlling what your hero does. -
If you are tight on slots you can slot Numina in your PBAE heal, its usually used atleast once every 2 minutes so basically perma. Plus if you are rich and afford the whole set, it offers some good bonuses.

Quote:Hey, I played AC to and have fond memories of that game, so *hug* :-)Mid I6?
Try running FF missions Per I1 and having every... single... one of them send you to Brickstown... back when there was no tram in FF so you had fly to Talos tram and connect to bricks.. only to finish the mission, and fly back.. cause you didn't get the phone number till you nearly maxed the bar... only to be sent to bricks AGAIN... and AGAIN... and AGAIN...
This is epic game, let me assure you, but it is not an "explorer" game IMO. I've played many an MMO that i'd consider true "explorer" MMO's. Back in my AC days, (Asherons Call, the original poormans Evercrack) we'd run for hours to get anywhere, big raid teams, running a cave quest in the diers would buff up, and have a marithon run, like 20 guys, booking accros the landscape for 20 mins. it was kind of awsome really... And it was accually pretty fun. (to an extent) Runing east to get to the dierlands, running by caves you'd never seen, jumping in and exploring them, getting mangled by mites in said cave.. losing every worldly possession you own... been sent back in shame to your home viliageto beg for a magic wand so you can do SOMETHING and start rebuilding yourself.... !@#$@#$ evil little mite sons of @#$@!@#~!s .....
.....
.....
Ok ok, i'm better now... that was repressed memory coming to the surface...
anyways.. no visiable loading screens, new and shifting horizens and landscapes. It had an epic, you lost in the woods feel to it, and was FUN. SWG, for all it's flaws, was an epic explorer game. Huge planets. Hidden gems. Epic space tavel. Crawling into Rancor nests to try and steal there cubs... faily and running for your life... ah.. good times...
CoH, does not, even with the new shinny ultra mode, live up to THAT. (IMO of course). Now doen't get me wrong, I'm still playing CoH and have played it longer then all my other MMO's combined... it's my FAV game, but it's not an explorer's MMO. All missions are relitively static selfinstenced missions. Each zone may have one zone event, some may have 2 at most.. they are relitively small when comparied with SWG's plantes or AC's world map in general. And... there's really nothing to "discover"...
But, it's just not that style of game. The adventure of a superhero MMO imo doesn't come from exploring the city, but saving it. (IMO of course)
Anyway, its nice to hear so many opinions about this issue.
I don't necessarily disagree with the need for PUG friendly missions, something which current CoH storyarcs can fail to cater for.
My main displeasure is the sheer repetiveness and simple nature of radio missions.
In my ideal CoH world, all CoH contacts will automatically be discovered once you enter a new zone (like what happens when new contacts are added to the game) and the contact UI is also updated to sort by zone. Cut back on the traveling involved as well, don't send people to Perez Park for a level 30 mission. Get rid of the "Now you must visit the Hollows before we'll talk." missions as well.
Personally I just find radio missions boring and only good for "quick and easy" grouping and xp. I just worry some players will never see anything past that, which will result in them quitting or getting bored. -
Quote:I think this is a bit of a misconception. Not even an Earth/ can perma hold whole groups early on in your career. Why ?
Everything should be held so why do you need Def ?
And for those EB/AV's just use Demonic Aura
Compared to my plants/fire, I have found my Earth/Earth to be much more taxing. There is a necessity to run into melee, but he takes quite a beating when doing that. Siesmic Smash should help a bit, but hes only just got it.
I'm not saying it wont improve with age, but my initial impressions of /Earth fighting mostly solo/duo is that going toe to toe with stuff can be very risky. -
Quote:True, but the "pure empathy" mentality means they will see the benefit of picking up some of their control powers in order to help their empathy. Pure support is a Controllers domain, they should head there if that is what they want to achieve.Well, if you're going to be a "pure empathy", then it's more pointless to be a Controller, because you're not taking Controls. Defenders do have better numbers.
That being said, I find "pure empathy" silly thought not as silly as "pure healer" due to the fact that they will use their buffs. However, I disagree with any empath not using their other powerset.
My Empathy Defender in my sig (Malcom) has been both a "pure empathy" and also a regular Defender with blasts. I am also currently playing an Illusion/Empathy Controller.
So from experiences of all 3 sides of this particular coin I can tell you that sitting in your team with all 3 leadership toggles running and doing the occasional spot heal is a complete waste of a characters true potential. With CoH in particular there is a limit to how much you can do with heals, simply because of the squishy nature of squishies. If you want to do the "sit and heal" playstyle, atleast be a Controller where you can use a variety of fire & forget powers such as Ice Slick, Phantom Army or Volcanic Ashes which will have much greater effect at keeping your team live and reduce the need to heal at the same time. You will also have a pet who can do a tad bit of damage for you.
To me, if you are going to be an Empathy Defender over an Empathy Controller, you have to atleast play to your strengths. This includes making good use of the more powerful version of Fortitude and also not being afraid to take & slot up your blasting powers so that you can make a real and meaningful contribution. That is where the Defenders strengths are. Especially now with the change to the inherent. -
Seriously, if you aren't going to take any of the attack powers you should role an Empathy Controller.
-
I think first you have to realise whether you are comparing a Mind/ Controller with a PermaDom Mind/ Dominator or just a normal Mind/ Dominator.
Then you have to realise that to make a PermaDom Dominator costs a substantial amount of money. So you have to compare it to a Controller who also has a lot of money invested in their enhancements.
If you do all that, the difference is not as big as you probably think.
Not to mention as a Dominator you are giving up a buff/debuff set for an assault set. Personally I always feel a bit naked playing as a Dominator because I'm so used to the buffs and debuffs. On top of that, Mind Control is one of the Control sets that has a good amount of single target attacks, plus can get decent AoE attacks with Terrfiy + EPP. So you have to ask yourself, is losing the buff/debuff really worth it? Especially considered the investment needed to make a PermaDom. -
My advice to you would be to not take hasten, you don't need to worry about Perma Dom until you are 50 anyway. Once you are 50 you can decide whether you want to go down that route or not. If you have been playing since i3, you should have some veteren respecs at your disposal for then anyway.
As for Earth/Earth or Earth/Fire, from a gameplay perspective /Earth is much more melee orientated and /Fire is much more range orientated. Personally I have found /Earth more difficult than my /Fire Dom, the necessity of being in melee opens you up for a lot of damage, atleast until you can reliably lock stuff down. -
Quote:Not quite sure what you are asking, but if you mass hypnosis a spawn and miss 1, and then mesmerize the missed mob then yes, you have effectively aggroed the spawn. However they are all sleeping so they can't do anything about it. Plus, Mass Hypnosis is easy to make perma. On Peacemoon it has a 45s duration and 16s recharge, although this is on a Controller. While on the topic of sleeping the PhalanxÂ…
In this thread, people mention using Mesmerize if Mass Hypnosis misses one. Mesmerize will draw agro. If I use Mesmerize on someone MH misses, is only the enemy I hit with Mes aggrod or are his/her neighbors aggrod as well?
I assume that after using Mesmerize, that NPC will stay mad at you throughout the ordeal, if MH happens to miss another time.
As far as sleep aggro, if a mob is sleeping they can still be aggroed through proximity. If you Mass Hypnosis them and run past them, when they wake up they will be aggroed even though they were sleeping when you ran past. Its worth noting that confused enemies do not aggro through proximity. If you run past a confused enemy they will not aggro as a result of proxmity when confuse expires. This is because technically, they were viewing you as an ally while you ran past.
Another small tip worth mentioning, is that Mesmerize is Mag4 so can sleep Bosses/AV's in one application, even as a controller without Domination. When doing the 5th Column TF or the ITF, I have kept 3 AV's slept. Another small tip and something I rarely see advertised, Mesmerize has a 100yrd range not 80. Making it a great long range CC snipe, both to control and to shut off any pesky toggles. Even if Mesmerize lasts half a second, it will still shut off a bosses toggles. -
Think of it as a patch of gas that lasts 60s, which targets enemies inside it and shoots up fumes which then hold the targeted enemy and anyone surrounding it.
Why do this? Because thats exactly what it does
The ingame description does not do this power justice. The main drawback of most AoE holds is their relatively short duration. Volcanic Gasses however can last for over 60 seconds.. -
Quote:I have always thought this also. In the "old days", Council and 5th changed as you got higher level. Starting off as normal soldiers, eventually becoming more of a "spec ops" type soldier, and then eventually becoming a "super soldier" in the 25+ range. Despite this, their weapons and abilities always remained identical, which I feel was a missed opportunity.I don't mind Council being ridiculously tall, but I wish it was more linked to their ranks. It's bad enough they're all (mostly) wearing the same uniform, but I can't even pinpoint the bosses by their size! Oh, a super tall guy, that must be an Archon! Oh, no...that was just a minion.
I don't remember if the 5th Column is the same way, but I find it amusing how short Requiem is.
"Everyone focus on Requiem!"
"I can't see him?!"
"I think he got stuck under Rommy's boot"
I think they still do, actually. However the new 5th Column spawns on the street are a jumbled mess of uniforms. Shame how these little details get forgotten, even by the devs. -
The above posters are right. In my experience, 4 points will protect you against every power which has a secondary effect of knockback. I.e, AoE attacks which just happen to also knockback.
The only powers I have seen get past this are powers specifically designed for knockback, and they are exceptionally rare. So rare, I can't even think of an example. Its also unlikely you will get stacked knockback unless you are the tank.
PvE, of course. -
Balance is inconsequential if you are only going to play CoH like a single player game, and have no interest in comparing your capabilities with someone elses.
However the moment you start seeing a lower level character of the same AT vastly outperform your character, you are going to start asking questions. Either you're doing something wrong, or the developers are. (I admit, too many people given this scenario instantly view it as a balance problem when in reality, they just don't know how to play.) -
Quote:I hope you say please and thankyou when you get Fortitude, Recovery Aura, Adrenalin Rush, Deflection Shield, Insulation Shield, ...Hello there forums,
So lately I have been playing a Fire/Kin and teaming around. In the latest team (still in it as we speak) we sparked a mini argument about me SBing people.
My argument is that I refused to SB them unless they ask for it and say thank you afterwards. Both me and Shang stated how my using Speed Boost was a gift, not a necesity.
Their argument is that if I don't intend on using the power, why have it. Also that the stone tank (the one who was demanding the SB) would be able to play much better, as well as everyone else, because of it.
Of course I understand that Speed Boost is a big advantage for the team and stone tankers, what I don't understand is that just because it is a help hat it means manners must go out of the window. I didn't roll a /kin just to observe everyone's buffs to see when to give them one.
So what's your overall view on the matter?
Or we could just accept what a total waste of time that would be and simply buff as needed when on a team. Not many people will ask you to achieve a 100% uptime, but every now and again? Stop being so immature.
P.S Not surpised this is coming from a Fire/Kin. -
I have to agree with the OP.
While this game is great in many areas, and I've always admired the "polished" feel on any graphical development, whether it is when they first introduced capes, when they added the "ultra" mode or when they have added the amazing new animations which are smooth and realistic.
However, the problem I have always had with this game is the almost amateurish way they handle the numbers and mathematics behind the scenes. It is a shame that the game gets let down in this way. I'm afraid whenever I read what the devs write on the forum it always comes across like a team of modders, working on someone elses game and still trying to figure out how it works.
"Hey guys I just figured out power X works in such and such way! I'll put a quick fix in the next patch." Sure, it would be okay occasionally, but where is the damn VISION? What about saying at a Dev meeting: "Okay guys, we are going to do a serious review of all the Buff/Debuff powersets, make sure the numbers are right and update any old powers which were designed 6 yrs ago and are still crap." I mean.. where. is. it. Why does this never happen? *sigh* -
I just don't see why its not an option, so many people would pay for this. Cmon devs, let us spend our hard earned cash! ;-)
-
Don't be silly, this isn't the scrapper/tanker/brute forum.
-
I haven;t played my mind controller much lately but in general I have been seeing this, especially with the "hold head" and "coughing" animations. For some reason though, Fossilize and Ice Block never fails to animate the "I'm stuck!" pose
Makes me think some of them are "hard" animations which literally force the enemy to do it straight away, and the other ones are more like soft emotes which play at the earliest convenience. -
Quote:Completely agree with this.Frankly, they throw in 2 costumes that arn't really all that impressive, 3 emotes, and 1 power....and expect to make 10 dollars for it? These are things that Cryptic would put in the game for free with the release of the different issues. They want to charge us 10 dollars for something that experienced people could create in a weekend, and then make it out to be a big deal with beta testing. As I said, the things they add in this game aren't really worth 10 dollars.
-
Gradually these booster pack powers are getting more and more powerful and I for one am becoming a bit worried.
Why has this pack included a self buff when Mystic Fortune was so obviously made to only buff other people and not yourself?
Why are the buffs that it grants so powerful instead of just being a random tiny perk?
As someone mentioned, people will pay millions of influence for a +3% defence enhancement. I think someone in the dev teams need a bit of a wakeup call and a reality check.
There is a fine line between paying for cosmetic features and actual substantial ingame advantages. Ninja Run was pushing it as far as I was concerned, but its such a cool power and fits the theme so well I let it go. However a random self buff? Please. It is both unnecessary and unwarrented.
P.S: I speak as someone who owns every booster pack going. -
One thing to consider is the Placate proc can cause aggro, where as Mass Hypnosis is usually aggro free.
-
So considering you can buy more MA story slots, any chance of more costume slots? With so many costume options and all the booster packs, it seems a shame to limit characters to only 4 costumes
-
I present to you the following anecdotal evidence, both of which are amusing and sad.
#1
Teamed with a PUG in Steel Canyon, the leader decides to do a "normal" mission and not just a random radio mission (i.e, one from a contact with an actual plot). It happens to be the Tsoo mission with the hacker, where you must first rescue him and then escort him to a computer to get some information.
Everything is going pretty well, there are a few deaths but we are making progress. We finally reach the hacker and rescue him, only for someone to escort him back to the entrance. I try to explain in team chat that we need to do take him to the computer(rest of the team remain silent), which is located on the map, however this guy ignores me and takes him down all the elevators and to the mission door. We then get a load of "???"'s in team chat while I try to explain again why the mission hasn't completed. After I explain, the guy says he is confused and quits the team, leaving the hacker on the bottom floor.
Eventually we do manage to get the hacker to the computer but I feel like im babysitting a team that has had Mass Confuse used on it.
#2
After finishing a bank mission where I helpfully explained to someone how to get inside the bank (yes this person claimed he never could do bank missions), we travelled to IP for a bit of a change of scenery. We get the mission where we must go to Striga Isle. Of course most of the team have no clue how to get there and so I personally escort them to the boat.
Then we finally reach Ms. Peebles when the team starts to gather by the door to her left. "Aren't you going to click on her?" I said to the team lead, to which he replied "Everyone wait inside." Does the rest of the team challenge him? No, they attempt to run into the building behind Ms. Peebles. *Facepalm*. So I reiterate in caps that they need to speak to the contact.. but by then I had already given up hope on the team.
So, anyone else have any funny stories like this? I think its a real shame a lot of the population who probably live in the 1-30 bracket have such a simplistic time in this game. Isn't it about time we do away with the boring repeatable missions with no plot and instead open up all the contacts in this game (without having to be introduced to them) and show some of these players how great CoH/CoV really is. -
Dominators aren't comparable to any other AT so they will be fine. No other AT offers Control/Blast.
It is Corrupters/Defenders and Brutes/Scrappers + Brutes/Tankers that will be most at war with each other. -
Thanks guys, some great ideas coming in
Funny because I don't usually have a problem making a build, but on this character i was completely stuck. Earth Control is a great asset, and I regularly team with a Mercs/Pain MM, yet even still im finding going toe to toe with mobs is still quite painful. Still, I haven't got SO's yet and they make a huge difference.
