Perhaps I described it wrong. I meant to break it down to the level that IMHO, console porting is not the way to go. It dumbs things down, the customizing ability, ect compared to PC games.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Customisability? Do you mean, of the character/avatar?

IF so, then: only because, prior to the current generation of consoles, it really hasn't been possible to customise elements within a game, the way we can here on CoH. And honestly, I think the possibility was absent not because of any especial hardware limitation (witness: those Tony Hawk skating games, with the OMG-customisable personal avatars. Least I think it was the Tony Hawk series; I don't actually play those). The limiting factor has always been developer attitude.

Heck, that kind of customisability wa largely absent from PC games, before City ofHeroes came along.

    ...

If you mean customisability of controls ... even there; give me a '360 controller with a messenger kit 47-key keyboard (which attaches directly to the controller), and there is precious little you can do with a PC keyboard-and-mouse in Co*, which I can't emulate near-perfectly with my controller-and-messenger unit.

The main stumbling point is, I think an MMO like CoH, with constant free updates, would have to be a "hard drive required" game, which rather puts the kibosh on 'porting it to 360 (due to Microsoft's policy on that front).

One man's vomit inducer is another man's delicacy.

My girlfriend, for example, recently discovered that she likes peanut butter and jelly ... AND CHEESE, all in one sandwich. The very thought makes me want to empty my stomach ... but she loves it. Go figure, right?

Consoles are the latest fad, [...]

    [/ QUOTE ]
If so, then the're a fad with a long, LOOOONG lifespan: to the tune of thirty six years. I mean, Jesus ... I'm only one year older than this supposed "fad" ... and home-computer games are younger than console games ... so if anything is a fad, it's PC gaming.

Arguably, one could cite the Commodore Business MAchines' VIC-20 as the first widely-purchased "hoem computer", as it was the first computer to sell more than one million units. That was in 1981, almost a full decade after the Magnavox Odyssey.

(I still remember my Commodore 64 fondly; I got it for christmas when I was fourteen - that was in 1985, three years after it was first introduced. Cost my mother an arm, a leg, and two months' worth of sleep to afford it for me, too.)
  3. [ QUOTE ]
Costumes etc will be locked in once the game is released, you can't have a 30 minute download every time you connect and PS doesn't have the storage to maintain large updates forever, it isn't designed for that.

    [/ QUOTE ]
... what are you talking about? The PS3 has a hard drive, currently produced models are either 40GB or 80GB. This PC has only 70GB, most of which is NOT city of Heroes.

360's generally, usually IMO, have hard drives also - 20GB or 120GB.
  4. [ QUOTE ]

360 does HD, but PS3 does it better. 360 can only achieve 1080i, and for many ppl, that's worse than 720p. PS3 does 1080p.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Where'd you hear that? The 360 can do 1080p.

    [ QUOTE ]
Have you even played a PS3? I bet you haven't, you would see a dramatic difference.

    [/ QUOTE ]
No, I haven't played one - I don't have a spare four hundred dollars to throw at a PS3. And even then, no I would not see any difference. My TV set is only Standard Definition, like most televisions in the U.S.

    [ QUOTE ]
Blu-Ray has already won the format War, and Microsoft hasn't made a decisions to create a Blue-Ray Add-On, they only had one spokesperson say that if the consumer had enough demand for it, they would consider it.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Won? Nah. Not until Blu-Ray disks outrsell standard DVDs, and blue-ray players outsell standard DVD players.

    [ QUOTE ]
Oh, and yeah silver membership is free, but not if you want the good stuff. You're faith in Microsoft is kind of funny.

    [/ QUOTE ]
The only things a Gold membership gives you is (a) online multiplayer, and (b) downloads are open to Gold members a week sooner than to Silver members. Big whoop.

Besides which, my Gold membership is costing me ... um ... about $3.40/month. Pocket change.

    [ QUOTE ]
As for the library, who cares? This is about putting an MMO on a Console. If you have to pick one that is better, its definitely the PS3. I've had both consoles. Now that PS3 is affordable, watch the tides turn in the console war.

    [/ QUOTE ]
The PS3 is "affordable" only if you forgo backwards compatibility ... which is Sony shooting themselves in the foot. The PS2's backwards compatibility is what sold me on that, instead of the original Xbox, years ago.

Now look, you: I wanted to stick with Playstation. I had a PSX, then a PS2, then another PS2 ... so there was a great deal of brand loyalty going in Sony's favor. But when push came to shove, and it was time to make the step up to the current generation of consoles, the PS3 just didn't have what it took. When I priced out the two purchases I'd make ... I ended up discovering that, even getting the ELITE 360 ... to match peripherals (seocnd controller, one game, rechargable battery packs etc) ...? The PS3 was going to cost me almost $150 more (backwards compatibility was an absolute requirement for me). Compounding the higher price, was a smaller games library. The two together ... was a death knell.

OTOH, if I won the lottery? I'd own a PS3 within the day. And a Wii, if I could find one. And at least one HDTV to hook them up to.

The biggest advantage the 360 has, over the PS3, in terms of an MMO? More consoles sold, worldwide. more consoles = more potential customers = more possible profit.

If they added world PvP I'd either adapt or move on.

    [/ QUOTE ]
I think the problem is too many people would move on.

First off: that's not a PS3 exclusive, the 360 can do HD just fine, too. Secondly: my TV is 480i, is less than 18 months old, and I have no desire to replace it. Why would I care, even if HD was a PS3-only feature?

You guys are focusing way too much on the pros and cons of console CoH based on how to translate the controls. What you're forgetting is this possibility:

Console gamers in our shards. Please God, save me from console gamers.

Server mergers would cause more catastrophic problems than they could ever solve, EVEN if it's just done to "move the PC users out to make room for the console folks".
  10. [ QUOTE ]
Did anyone other than me play Diablo on the Playstation after playing it on a PC? I did not think it ported over well to the console myself, and I truthfully do not see CoX porting over very well.

    [/ QUOTE ]
The PS1 did not have as complex and capable a controller as later consoles.

    [ QUOTE ]
How do you control 3 trays of powers with a console controller with any sembelance [sp?] of speed?

    [/ QUOTE ]
    See above.

My characters get by just fine with ONE tray of "omg I need it faaaaast" powers, and a slightly-delayed access to the other two trays.

    [ QUOTE ]
I see a lot of problems with porting this over to a console, nevermind that I have too much invested in my PC to spend $ buying a console that I don't really want.

    [/ QUOTE ]
... what part of "adding the PS3 playerbase to the PC playerbase" makes you think you'd HAVE to buy a console?

    [ QUOTE ]
They day the games are fully merged, that heroes and villains all have access to all of the zones etc., is the day I cancel my account. It is a bad idea all around.

    [/ QUOTE ]
becuase you will have more people to play with, you will be able to lvl faster and see more content?

    [/ QUOTE ]
No, because World PvP is antithetical to how this game was launched, and thus, antithetical to the very thing that attracted a large portion of the Old Guard among the playerbase.
  12. [ QUOTE ]
    [ QUOTE ]
Ugh, CoH on a console. What an abomination.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm curious to how it would work...given the amount of powers you acquire...though my friend uses his 360 controller when playing FF11

    [/ QUOTE ]
Have you seen a 360 controller? Mine has the following that would be available for any game to address and use:
[*] Two analog thumbsticks[*] Two buttons "under" those thumbsticks (you can click them "down" or "in", relative to the controller main body, and it registers as a separate button)[*] One four-register "Directional Pad"[*] The Start and Back buttons[*] The four A/B/X/Y buttons[*] Two trigger buttons, left and right[*] Two shoulder buttons, left and right

    So ...
[*] Right button to cycle between Power trays and Inspiration trays[*] A, B, X, Y, and both triggers - that's six controls. If we use the left trigger as a "shift" / modifier button, we can get ten controls (A, B, X, Y, and Right trigger with ... versus A, B, X, Y, and Right trigger without). That's an entire power tray covered.[*] Ignoring the Shift function, the Inspiration tray is only ever, what, five columns? So the Left Trigger could be "free select" mode within the Inspiration tray, guided by the right thumbstick; once you release, whichever inspiration was highlighted, is used. Add a single "Cancel" spot above the topmost row and you're golden.[*] The Back button can be used to call up a series of management screens - Enhancements, the various Options tabs, etc. Standard menu navigation in there would work fine.[*] Toggle Mouse -vs- Camera for the right thumbstick, via the button right under it.[*] "Tab: next enemy" can be handled by the button under the left thumbstick[*] Movement, via the left thumbstick. Left shoulder button modifies this for strafing up/down instead of forward/backward.[*] D-pad "up" toggles the Salvage tray open[*] D-pad "down" toggles the Recipe tray open[*] D-pad "right" cycles through [nul]<-->[map]<-->[contacts]<-->[missions][*] D-pad "left" opens the Costume Selection window
    ...

That's not complete, and can almost definitely be improved upon. But, it's WITHOUT the Messenger Kit addon, and it's covered most of the controls you need to get to "fast" in this game. ^_^

And all that ignores simply using a USB keyboard and USB mouse.

    ...

I'm not saying I want a console version of CoH ... but I am saying, it's physically feasible, in terms of the UI.
  13. [ QUOTE ]
Ugh, CoH on a console. What an abomination.

    [/ QUOTE ]
    Actually ...

... my Xbox 360 could do a passable job of running Co* (relatie RAM shortage aside). Control-wise, I mean. This product covers the Keyboard needs; the panoply of other buttons on any '360 controller gives you a wide range of options for activating powers ... and that's all without altering the UI at all, just putting an interpreter between the controller and the current UI.
  14. Thank you very much for the answer, Ex; I was fully prepared for either total silence or "we can't reveal that just now". The fact that the answer is also an extremely reassuring one, is just pure gravy. ^_^
  15. From the article:

    [ QUOTE ]

1UP: We've heard that NCSoft's newest studio in California is dedicated both to maintaining the City of Heroes franchise and to working on PS3 development. So would it be a great leap to expect City of Heroes-related content on the PS3?
Chung: [laughs] I can't tell you specifically, but yes, we are reviewing all our titles. In my opinion, there are a number of titles in our portfolio that are really suitable for consoles, and City of Heroes is one of them. But we're looking at all of our products.

    [/ QUOTE ]

So. My question at this juncture is this: All those new hires? How many of them are working on THIS game, right here? Half, all, none? And how many of the pre-NC^2 team are still workign on THIS game?

NOTE .... by "this game", I mean the current PC-based City of Heroes ... not a console 'port, not Co*2, not anything else except the game I could play if I fired up my CoH client on a PC.

As a total aside, btw: I find that news of expansion-and-focus to be welcome news; perhaps NC^2 will be able to assign two or three folks as "the Base team", giving full-time work to the needs of base design and construction on a permanent basis. New parts, improved UI, fixing bugs, etc.

    [/ QUOTE ]
News for you, my friend: Travel Suppression was requested by players, as a replacement for what used to be: a fairly large -Accuracy debuff, for as long as the travel toggle was active.

Don't try to call it something "implemented without regard for player input", because it was implemented as the result of player input. And quite frankly, given your forum registration date ... you should be perfectly aware of this fact. (One of the few cases where I'll even pay attention to a Reg Date ...)
