I apologize that I had to explain this concept to you over the internet as I assumed it was something you would have learned on the path to higher education, but now it would seem you weren't on such a path.

I hope you don't take umbrage with this.
Heh, I love you Voodoo. That was fantastic.

And I've been buying her books for decades.
One more reason why I have Angry on ignore, and have for a while. I've been reading Mrs. Lackey's books since grade school. His whole "I'VE NEVER HEARD OF HER SO SHE MUST JUST BE DOING THIS FOR ATTENTION!" schtick is insultingly stupid.

Oh I know, I didn't think you were being rude. But at this point, we're just lucky some one is willing to take up the mantle for us. Even if he couldn't give us any sort of updates, it was a good shot of hope for everyone.

Be grateful we get this at all.

Thank you, Hitstreak, the community appreciates it. We also appreciate the morale boost.

But you know what? I'm still excited about this game. All the video feed and live streams have convinced me that this is a worthy successor to X-COM. If my issues with it aren't resolved in the final product, I'll be slightly upset but if the gameplay holds up then I'm willing to overlook it. Then I'll be upset later. Much later
They've already admitted that it was just a quick demo they'd thrown together for something else, and decided to make public. Releasing a demo early at ALL seems to be a miracle anymore.
  8. Its probably just in need of a reset. If Posi is still around he may be able to contact them, and I have seen Black Pebble and SEcond Measure here as well. Some one can tell them to reset it if we are lucky.

That's $800k/month revenue, not profit. Clearly, she heard one thing and remembered another.

An 80-person tech company in Silicon Valley is not cheap to run. I don't know what their salary structure is like, but an educated guess (I have been working in tech companies in SV about that size for the past 15 years) would be that running Paragon was costing between $6-$8m annually.

And that's just the cost for dev. There's also support costs and server costs. Way back in the infancy of MMO's, Raph Koster said that costs for dev, support and infrastructure were roughly equal. Now things have changed a lot since then, servers and bandwidth are a lot cheaper. Support has stayed about the same.

It's certainly well within the possibilities that overall, the business of Paragon Studios and CoH was losing money.

How is it possible for some people to say that the game was doing well? It's actually very easy to do if you just pick the right numbers. For one thing, not everyone at Paragon was working on CoH. If you assume (number picked at random) half the people were, then you could say that CoH was making $10m in revenue at a cost of $3-4m. That looks very nice from that perspective.

On the other hand, you could say that Paragon was pulling in $10m in revenue against costs of $10-12m ($6-8m Paragon studios, $2.5m support, $1.5m infrastructure).

Unfortunately, it's likely that NCSoft was looking at the total costs, and it didn't look that great. When you add in the fact that Paragon was apparently on their third 'seekrit project,' and NCSoft still wasn't enthused about it...

tl;dr - My read on the situation is that this closure has at least as much to do with NCSoft pulling out of the 'seekrit project 3.0' as it does about CoH. I think from NCSoft's point of view, CoH was a side-business that helped defray the costs of operating Paragon as a development studio for new games, and when they decided to stop that development, it made no sense to continue the side-business.
As usual Brillig, you really need to shut the hell up. Your ability to troll even at the worst of times is...impressive in a way, but enough is enough. Go away already.
  10. Eh, WoW used to be my go-to MMO. Played from Vanilla right up to Cata. Quit two months into that. Just wasn't the same. Tried the seven day free trial they gave me last week. Played for a day to test all the changes and that was all the care I could muster for it.
  11. Bah. I knew this was coming, but I was hoping it'd be later rather then sooner. Take care, Zwill, and best of luck to you, where ever the road may lead.

any game will have bugs, and co was running a lot leaner on gms than coh. but if you play mmos, you get thick-skinned to bugs really.
I really have to emphasis this, but MMOS ARE GOING TO HAVE BUGS. So long as you aren't running into something game breaking every hour or so then it's fine. Report it and move on. If you ARE playing a game plagued by constant game breakers then you probably need to play something else until it all gets fixed.
  14. Saw this recently myself and it definitely has me intrigued. I'd heard of X-Com before but never gotten into it. I'll probably pick it up.

You're right really. I was being overly scathing because his attitude annoys me. There wasn't a point in his post, other then to stir up ire and see if he could find anyone to support his viewpoint. The second one is normal and I can't fault him for it, but the first reasoning just aggrivates me. Pouring salt on the wound if you will.
  16. Things like Zwills goodbye and Cryptic picking up a number of Paragon employee's is kind of starting make me feel this way. Still, it ain't over til its over. And we still have November 30th for that. So until then I'll do whatever I can do try and save it.

Something to keep in mind for the Admiral level carriers is that their turn radius is roughly equivalent to the orbit of Jupiter, so if you prefer something that can maneuver you should give the Armitage heavy escort carrier a try. Only one hangar bay, but it's got the firepower and maneuverability of an escort.
Low manuverability doesn't overly bother me. I can adjust it to an extent using consoles, and worse comes to worse adjust my aft weapons appropriately. Theoretically having a swarm would at least reduce the need for as much aft weaponry, but we'll see when I get there. I could alway flip my aft turrets for flat out banks if I need.

Something about having an entire twelve ships out just tickles me pink. I realize I probably will NEVER have that many, either from using Birds of Prey or shield restoration units or what have you, but when I do I will laugh. A lot.

Ok, so getting more of you in STO is a lost cause. But a man can dream!

It is nice seeing some chatter in the CoX channel, though. And I should probably appoint some CO side admins at some point. Hmm...
I'm actually STO'ing as we speak. I LOVE the carriers, though I hate that realistically the only Federation one I am going to get is level 50. I'll grind that out after my Klingon gets to 40 and I can test a two-hanger carrier. Single hanger carriers are all sorts of fun though.
  19. I've actually played CO casually for a couple of years now. If the worse comes to pass and there is absolutely no hope for CoH, then it'll be my super-hero itch scratcher.

Is there something in particular you'd like to know about it, or do you just want a show of hands for people migrating to it?

If they come out with a stand alone game it will be around just about forever. I mean I dont know about you but if I buy a game I want to be able to put it away and play it later. Hell. I still have a PS1 game I play. And a couple Sega Saturn games I will probably get out once the game goes offline.

I figure Ive spent over $1000 on this game. As of December 1 what will I have to show for that?
I know it might seem sort of harsh, but thats a risk you take when you play anything online-only. Going into it, you have to understand that at any time, for any reason, the people behind the curtain may pull the plug. You HAVE to know that it won't last forever, even if it is the most popular game in the world. Eventually it's time will come. Then all of a sudden all the money you spent, all the man hours, all of that is gone. It sucks, its terrible, its one reason I prefer offline games to online, but that's how it goes. Que sera, sera.

Still not giving up on CoH, tho'.
  21. "I did not like this game, therefor I am not upset that it is closing, nor surprised that it is, and I don't get why other people are." Pretty classic troll. Nothing else to see, move along.

I fully expect the forums to last until the final day of the game, when they finally switch everything off at the same time.
I'm not really expecting that. Not to be overly negative, but the only thing we are even sort of promised at this point is servers being up until November 30th. It IS entirely possible, and I certainly hope they do, but at this point, even Zwill is gone. I give it another month.

    .
Quit being so negative. We have affirmation from a pretty reliable source ((Well, Mercedes Lackey. So famous author anyway)) that negotions are still ongoing. These things take time. Its not just two people sitting down in a room banging out details, everything has to pass by a good deal of people in NCsoft. IF something does come out of it then we likely won't know for a good while yet. And if nothing comes out of it, then due to NDA we'll probably never know.
