Quote:[Hyperbolic Analogy]Is New Orleans the same after Katrina as it was before?[/Hyperbolic Analogy]Only one thing from your post confuses me:
Is the community destroyed? I thought the whole point of the Titan stuff was to maintain the community? It can't be both ways..the community can't be destroyed AND thriving in the face of adversity.
Some people left, never to return. Some people returned to rebuild. Some new people went there to rebuild. The people there now are trying to rebuild but it won't be the same as it was.
[Stating the obvious]The Titan Initiative can't and won't capture 100% of CoHers. The refugees that shelter there will form a new community in the image of CoH but it cannot be CoH.[/Stating the obvious] The CoH community is destroyed. The Titan community may thrive.
Quote:Yeah but selling might be a good way to continue on, but according to them, they tried that and exhausted that option.
If they had said they were using it as a tax write off, I'd believe that. That's the sort of dick move corporations do. I'd still never give them money again and I'd dissuade anyone I can from giving them money, but I'd believe that. -
Quote:The incarnate end grind in CoH had a similar goal to the uber-slow/raid grind found everywhere else in the industry. It was not intended for everyone, it was a direct response to the constant whining from industry vets that there was no equivalent to the WoW raid advancement in this game.
If they didn't use the excuse of hoarders they could've left the shard system in play for all the slots and continued on the normal-play-for-advancement path. But Posi wanted to wear the raider game big boy pants so if it wasn't done with 47 of your closest friends it wasn't cool.
aiXP didn't slow anyone down that had the stockpile of parts to instantly slap together a T3 or T4 for hybrid. They had to see Magi farms as the result of the new experience type.
Hoarders gonna hoard. They'll get the new shiny instantly. Then they'll farm farm farm so they can do it to the next new shiny. Meanwhile you alienate the more casual player, which until the Thread system was the target audience of the game.
Quote:The system could have been seen as optional should it have offered less drastic bonuses, or at least bonuses that are mainly useful only against raid targets (lets say, damage procs that only trigger against Pretorians.)
Making things insanely good, and universally usable resulted in everyone feeling it was simply necessary. -
Quote:Gandhi: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”The fact that you know how it feels to be ****** over in real life yet have zero qualms about it happening to the very real people that play this game here says a lot about you. It says a lot about people in general, actually. There's a whole hell of a lot of "I got mine, so screw you" going on in this country. Why should we lay back and take it in ANY area of our lives?
I believe that how things that don't "matter" are handled is a good indicator of how things that matter will be handled.
If having a solo path that was equal to the team path would detract from the team path that means that those people who moved on to the now equal solo path were not in the iTrials for the teaming but merely because it was the path of least resistance. Why not let teaming stand on its own merits instead of browbeating the community into it. If it was fun people would be doing it. If you have to coerce people to do it a redesign might be in order. -
Quote:Not just math, Coulomb2's "Month in DA" threads collected a lot of actual data.No issues getting all your incarnate stuff doing DA arcs? By "getting your incarnate stuff" you are NOT talking about getting fully T4ed. The math has been laid out before and claims to the contrary are ********.
~4/5 chance of a common, which can't be used to upgrade above common, is just insulting, especially when you've gotten all your freebie tables. And NotW's not working for post-Alpha was just insult to injury, forcing you into waiting on a 5% per day chance of a rare, and Mot help you if were going for a very rare. The 2 emps per week per complete run through (no avoiding arcs depending on character type), when a VR needed 30, all I can say is "Really devs, really?" -
Quote:That's not entirely accurate. Valor gear isn't mechanically required to enter the endgame content, it's just socially required, the first raid was tuned to be completed with gear from the 5-mans. Guilds decided that people must have valor gear. (People suck). Thanks for that. So... I guess at the end it's insanely worse than any solo progression we got.
In an/the upcoming patch you can use valor to upgrade existing items, they didn't put that system in place in 5.0 so they put gear on vendors. You're actually still gated more by the limits on valor gain than the time it would take to get revered with the factions. -
Woot! And thanks to everyone involved with coXso!

Quote:I've only been playing for a few years and CoH is not the same game now (on its deathbed) as I started with. i24 probably would've been like a new game as well.(compare to CoH's own ragdoll changes, or Ultra Mode).
This is what gets me about people saying that CoH is an eight-year-old game. It's not. If you were to able to play I24 and then I1, you would be playing two different games. Sure, the games would be the same thematically, but they would be vastly different in content and in technology. Just as Madden '13 would be from Madden '04.
The name's the same, some mechanics and overall feel are the same, but I really wonder about anyone that says i1 is the same as i23 though in a way I suppose it could be a modern version of the Ship of Theseus question but with upgrades in place of replacement. -
A quick and dirty and partial transition guide:
1. Get someone to level 10, then fuss about costumes. The costume creator can't really be called that until some character has hit 10 and unlocked all the free default pieces. It will be unlocked account wide and you can even delete that character and things will remain unlocked.
2. Third button on the left of your mini-map (Socrates) is your friend. Socrates is how you get your exit mission button back and call to turn in (most?) missions. You can also pick up new missions from Socrates.
3. If you see a civilian getting menaced by baddies and save them you'll probably get a newspaper type mission as a reward. Or you'll get some bonus XP.
4. Powers trained in the Power House are free to remove while in the Power House. Powers trained in the field cost money to remove. When you hit 6, check your travel powers out in the power house to make sure you are ok with the animations. Acrobatics is the bird run from Ninja Run. If you like Ninja Run, you'll probably like Acrobatics. Teleport is basically a short term stealth and fly buff with a short stealth and hover period after it expires. You have to keep clicking this one but there's no reticule like CoH's teleport.
5. You can't have your first character be a purchased AT because the C-Store doesn't unlock until you've had a character hit 10.
6. The Night Avenger is a claws scrapper that can splortch super villains with their assassin's strike. Viper style claws only though, no retracts, and the energy builder sorta registers on the jump kick scale for hopping about.
7. While the mission text may say 1-5 members it sometimes assumes 1 purpled to the gills multiples of the inf cap character.
8. There is a charity worker who can refill your stars for a price.
9. Your stance may affect your run animation. If you don't like the default run animation try changing your stance at a costume person. Or if your travel power is a toggle just leave it on.
10. You can turn the outlines off.
11. The CO wiki wishes it could be paragon wiki. -
Thank goodness Transgaming wasn't involved.
Now if it had super sidekicking so it was easier to play with friends (especially given the limited number of characters you get as F2P) I'd be poking at it more as I've already got one level and gear segregated fantasy MMO and that one I'm actually paying for. -

It would have sucked for us players but if they had pulled the plug on 8/31 at the announcement the anti-NCSoft firestorm would have been glorious. Which is why they "gave" us three months.

Quote:That's a fact that needs to be on page 1 of google results and all over the social media sphere.check out mmodata.net they seem to have reliable numbers
after a quick peek - looks like swg had less than 25k when their announcement was given. same with tabula rasa. i wouldn't be surprised if their CoH claim is correct.
:'(
Random people may not care that CoH in particular was closed but knowing that NCSoft holds the record for largest MMO killed might deter them from investing in whatever the victim du jour is.
NCSoft should get some sort of award for killing off the largest MMO. It could be like a virtual traveling trophy given to the current record holder. Sure, some company could easily take the crown from when NCSoft killed CoH but when NCSoft offs GW2 for Wildstar they'll surely get it back. Hmm, may need categories, like largest subscription MMO killed, largest Hybrid MMO killed, largest free-to-play MMO killed, largest buy-to-play killed, etc. etc.. -
Sounds like SaveCoH was able to at least leave scorch marks on NCSoft's hull. Although you know what they say about leaving scorch marks.
Perhaps it will buy Arenanet a more humane death when NCSoft needs to cook the books for Wildstar. -

Quote:I do not believe that all things are acceptable in the name of profit.Uh, NO corporation gives a crap about anything but the next quarter's profits. They don't have feelings, or morals, or beating hearts. They're all about money. That's why they're a business.
Corporations that behave badly don't get my money. If enough people followed suit either the behavior changes or the corporation is put six feet under. But when putting out a new shiny is like going to confession and all sins are forgiven there isn't much incentive to behave.
Go enjoy GW2. Give NCSoft more money and tell them you endorse their handling of Paragon Studios. Then when Arenanet is axed to offset a quarter's temporary losses due to Wildstar's development costs being put on the books before the sales of it, proudly proclaim that you supported that and anyone who complains is a dirty bleeding heart hippy because it made NCSoft profit and that justifies everything. -
Quote:This is why immortal amoral piles of money are effectively above reproach. Well, I suppose if you want to buy is more corporations behaving like NCSoft because no one calls them on it go ahead, I can't stop you.As I said in my original post, I am going to try games I look the look of, irrespective of the company holding the purse strings.
I'd rather have corporations that actually look beyond next quarter's profits but oh shiny must have! -

Quote:Perhaps it was the previously demonstrated lack of support for and bordering on outright dismissal of SaveCoH that caused your sudden support to be taken in the wrong tone.dont see anything petty about gaining momentum by getting more people to join the cause.
...
Not sure what tone you imagine that statement to be in but it is not the tone you probably thought it to be. Would it have been better if spoken by someone else? Or is the prejudgment of words tone in play and assigning a tone to the words based on animosity regardless of what I write?
Quote:And so a person saying they are going to bootleg their stuff is suppose to get them talking?Quote:I dont deal with Titan because a few of them in power are a little nuts and yeah that emulator thing and the other stuff over there. It's coming off as desperate now and front like they are making a big ripple in something. They are too being mostly ignored by NCSoft and I dont think NCSoft really fear them but wouldnt be surprised if they have people watching every move just waiting for them to cross that line from the planning side onto the actual illegal action side and then pounce. I think Titan actually did everything in their power to antagonize NCsoft instead of trying a real attempt at communication. Trying to open a line of communication usually dont involve harassing the other party whether by mail, email or capes or other crap. -
