If I can get it to boot (not looking good so far), I should be able to run a CHKDSK, and might be able to get things working. Fingers crossed, but I wanted you to know before Saturday.
Clicks of Doom are very bad. they usually indicate a physical head crash.

My advice? DO NOT boot off of the hard disk. DO NOT run CHKDSK. If you have the option of connecting the disk to another computer, do that. Back up anything you can onto a removable hard disk, DVD-Rs, or whatever you can grab. Because the more the disk runs, the more data you'll probably loose. Forever.

If you don't have that option, and you have important stuff on the disk, pay for a professional to back up what he/ she can.

Of course, if you don't have any important data on there, like family pictures or your music collection, chuck the hard disk out the window and buy a new one.
  2. Speaking of which...

Ooh boy, let's not have this debate again - the last one was bad enough Stay on topic people!
  4. I remember Infinite X. I'm pretty saddened by this news. He helped show a lot of us the ropes of the Hami raid, and he was a good player. My thoughts go out to you, the rest of his friends, and his family.
  5. That's some nifty doctoring Mindscythe. Congrats!
  6. Messed around a little more. Ironically, I think going into AVG's Tools > Advanced Settings and disabling Gaming Mode did the trick. Only tested for a half hour (I can usually repro the glitch every 30 mins) and had no issues with Gaming Mode disabled. Looks promising, but a longer test will be in order tomorrow.
  7. The only thing I know is, after playing for about an hour with AVG disabled, the problem stopped. Perhaps AVG is checking for new signatures every half hour, which causes problems with CoH in full-screen mode? I'm only guessing at the moment.

    WS soloings?

I played my WS to lvl 50 soling a great deal, so I can safely say Yes Just remember to pick up both your Mires and Eclipse, and ABSOLUTELY Stygian Circle. If you want to solo, Stygian Return's a great power too, in case you mess up or get in over your head

    Yes, QFT.

A raid where everyone has a different job, and those jobs are specifically tailored to the strengths of their ATs, is somehow worse in your estimation?

In the old raid, I was the tool being used. In the new raid, I'm a participant.
That, and many of us grew tired of either getting griefed by Giant Monster pullers, or fighting for manpower to start a raid only to have the zone maxed out with moochers for the last 10 minutes (and keeping fallen raiders who had worked hard up to that point out of the Hive). Do I miss the old social aspect of the raid? Certainly. However, in comparison to the aberrant gameplay it inspired, along with the mooching and greifing, I much prefer the new, tactics-required, everyone-pulls-their-weight Hami raid.
  12. Well yeah disabling desktop composition entirely when CoH is running will do that

    Here's my hypothesis:

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by a process (City of Heroes).

CoH tries to disable the Desktop Window Manager in full screen, but...

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application.

Another application is already interfacing with the Desktop Window Manager, causing the temporary loss of window focus and the loss of CoH client interaction.

Of course, one could disable desktop composition entirely and side-step the issue. But if the other program can be pinpointed, such action shouldn't be necessary.
  13. Interesting. I'll first try a selective bootup with AVG disabled to see if that's the culprit. They did recently update to a new version, so it has been on my list of suspects.
  14. Just glad to be on the list, frankly. Maybe GR will help improve our ranking in the future; maybe not. Either way, I'm still playing

Yes, that sounds like the same issue.
  16. I can't say for sure. However, if you (or anyone) reading this thread is suffering from this issue or similar, open up a Support ticket. If it is something with the client or the OS, the more tickets open, the more likely it will be found. But at this point, all of the evidence gathered seems to point away from the OS, at least in my own case.
  17. Ack, looks like I'll have to do some trial & error:

If the problem didn't occur after following the msconfig instructions it could mean another program that was running caused the issue. You can either continue playing with them disabled since what you disabled is probably not necessary to have running constantly. Or if you want to find out what program is responsible for the issue you will need to enable them one at a time and try the game till the problem comes back.
Think the Support is probably closing the case since it doesn't seem to be OS or client-based. I've been meaning to clean out my computer anyhow... just wish I had some clue as to the culprit. I'd run with stuff disabled but I'd rather keep my AV enabled and find the culprit.

More to come when I mess around with it later tonight or tomorrow, I'm sure.
  18. Eh well, I'll wait for the next set of steps from Support. Worth a thought though.
  19. Can't be Steam here, I don't have it installed. Yes, I'm weird; just don't play too much on the PC except for CoX.

But I am running vNidia ForceWare 191.07. Installed it recently too. Might be suspicious. Not the driver itself, mind you, but the apps that install with it, like the nVidia Control Panel.

You should thank Support I know how to run what they need me to run, sure, but they're the ones handing me the steps.

I just have to wonder what the commonality is. I doubt it could be a driver as the system runs fine when no non-MS services or startup tasks are running - meaning the driver interfaces between the OS and game probably aren't suspect. Could it be the nVidia apps, SoundBlaster apps, Google Chrome, AVG, or something else? Hrmmm, maybe I'll try to run the client on my Win Vista laptop tonight and see if I have the same issue there.
  21. Actually, I'm disinclined to believe it is a Windows problem at this point. At the recommendation of Support, I used MSConfig to disable all non-MS services and startup apps, and the client worked flawlessly. Still working with Support on this, so hopefully more details to come.
  22. Might be something I can test with System Restore after performing the next test for Support.

Ack, I hope not. IMPE, OS bugs are always harder to fix than 3rd party bugs. But it could be due to the latest security patch that came out restricting program permissions or whatnot.

In any case, Support gave me something else to try. Going to see what turns out.
  24. My Warshade's probably as Warshade as one can get, meaning that he would be the last Warshade to go Nictus.

That being said, it would offer some interesting possibilities in the future with another character. Only time will tell I suppose.
  25. Agreed. I believe the main reason we don't have more functional base items is due to art time - the dept's deeply impacted by GR, and the devs don't want to add anything until it has its own unique, cool model to go with it. At least that's what I remember Sunstorm posting recently.
