Congrats to Y_B, but IMPO, I don't think it was very creative.

    Farewell Gamepro

GamePro magazine and website to shutter next month

    Quote:

GamePro magazine is set to shut down this coming month, owner IDG Games announced today. The magazine that enjoyed so much popularity in the 1990s will shut down its website in five days, and one more issue of the physical quarterly will be published.

The magazine started in 1989 and established a website in 1996, according to IndustryGamers. The struggling magazine went through a few redesigns in recent years, including one that ended the practice of allowing writers and editors to use nom de plumes like Air Hendrix and D-Pad Destroyer in their bylines. The most recent redesign in July took the magazine down from a monthly to quarterly format.

The GamePro website will cease to exist on December 5 and will begin redirecting users to PC World's website (another IDG property). Some employees will be laid off, but IDG notes that game news and reviews will be rolled into PC World's slate of content.

We're sad to hear this news, but hope PC World can carry the GamePro torch. Pour out a Jar of Fly Honey or Bacchus Wine for a fallen friend.

Designer's Comments: Arc of Destruction excels at decimating everything in front of you. It makes for a great Momentum opener as it'll knock your foes off of their feet allowing you to execute a few attacks with Momentum without enemies attacking you back. Also, Arc of Destruction looks especially painful if used on targets that are knocked down.
After reading the designer's notes, listening to today's UStream, and asking several times on numerous forums, I've never had this answered:

WHY is it a requirement that Arc of Destruction be ground-based? Especially when ever other power in the set can be used from the air?

Right. Does the Head tab tabulate associated cost with head details, etc.? Can't remember off the top of my... well, you know.

This kind of sounds snarky to me. So the plan is to do away with female specific pieces altogether?
"less overall unique pieces, especially for the female..." is a direct quote. But hopefully not none whatsoever.

As for pre-tinting... why not use more bump-mapping for textures? Is it more client-intensive?

I think they mean marked on your Powers bar. They are actually grayed out and unusable until you have Momentum.

This is a forum maintenance Sam, not a game server maintenance.

  11. Looking forward to this set One of the reasons I'm still here.

I wonder if they ever changed Arc of Destruction though; there were quite a few players unhappy with the animation, and it was the only attack one couldn't use while flying, which didn't make a lot of sense (unless it was to compensate for superior damage).

    Hi all,

    The official City of Heroes Freedom forums will be down for a maintenance between 10:30 a.m. Pacific Time (1:30 p.m. Eastern Time / 6:30 p.m. GMT / 19:30 CET) and 2:30 p.m. Pacific Time (5:30 p.m. Eastern Time / 10:30 p.m. GMT / 23:30 CET) on Thursday, December 1st, 2011.

Following this maintenance the skin issue will be fixed and all VIP usernames will display as gold.

We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience.

I thought gold names were supposed to be optional?

Just because we don't make an immediate change to something doesn't mean we aren't listening (P.S. We are ), it just means that we didn't immediately act on it, for whatever reason.

Sometimes things take awhile to change one way or the other. Sometimes they don't change at all. Sometimes they change immediately. It's a part of the creative process when working on live product. We are listening and taking your thoughts into account. Sometimes we just have different viewpoint, and sometimes those viewpoints change .
Thanks for addressing my concern Zwill.

In that case, and in closing, I truly hope this issue is addressed sooner rather than later, and that more parts are added retroactively as opposed to added as additional buy-ins. Just adding the shirt, jacket, and chap options for female characters as demonstrated by Commander would be sufficient, IMPO.

Edit: and add non-pre-tinted options if feasible.

2: If it's an overlay, just remove it.

It's stupidly simple. I'm 99% sure anyone at the company could do it in their spare time. Hell, I would do it for free if they just gave me the damn texture files and let me work on them.
Or just stop using line art to create texture and use a bump ma. There are already plenty of other costume pieces that use bump mapping.

Realistically, don't expect it any time soon. Schedules are planned out months in advance and right now we're working on both Issues 22 and 23 and art schedules are quite possibly the most rigorous and time consuming of the lot, especially the character artists. Time to revisit previous costume pieces is not currently included and to do so would compromise new costume sets, villain groups, etc, etc...it has an extreme domino effect.
I guess the real moral of the story is: don't bother with feedback to anything related to the Art Team, because if there's a problem with something, it won't be addressed at all or will take a very long time due to backlogging.

Don't get me wrong, I love the art of CoH. But there's a pretty big flaw in the process, especially if you open a feedback thread regarding art assets in testing (in addition to a bug report thread) with little to no intention of actually using any gathered feedback. Feedback threads are customarily created to immediately address concerns the playerbase may have with items, not as a "circular file" for players to send feedback into a vortex.

I think that's the big problem a lot of players see with this issue. You've basically admitted that, even if there were issues with pieces, such as the pre-tinting or lack of options, nothing could have been done before the set was launched. If that was truly the case, there was little to no need for a feedback thread at all. It's like trying to give feedback on a ship that's already careening down the slipway ("Oh wait, there's a hole in the bow? Oh well..."). It makes a feedback thread an empty, futile gesture at best.

IOW, I am dissapoint too. Why make existing things better when they can just make more money selling them to you later?
  18. <QR>

I have to agree with the OP, as I have done several times over in the Gunslinger Feedback thread, which (as mentioned by several others) garnered not even one dev response in regards to the concerns brought up there, and again here.

If anything, female characters should have more options than men. I say this because they should be able to wear dresses/ skirts and pants, bustiers/ corsets or jackets, etc.

As it is right now, there's not nearly enough lateral movement for female characters where these costume packs are concerned. As the OP has demonstrated, several packs in the past, and now the Gunslinger pack, leave female characters with little options but to dress in tops that leave little to the imagination, or bottoms that do the same. Where are the missing jacket and lower torso options?

Certainly, I understand that many comic females dress for sex appeal (it's part of what sells comics). At the same time, there are also plenty of examples of strong female characters that can pull off sex appeal without needing to bare most. At this point, the new costume boosters only cater to the former, IMPO. The focus of these certain costume packs is so narrow that there is little value to many concepts in them; quite the opposite actually - female characters are being pigeon-holed into a singular mold which consists of immodesty.

Until such a time whereas female characters can actually use a similar jacket as their male counterparts with these boosters, or get a decent pair of pants (instead of a skirt flap that barely covers their groin), I think I'll be abstaining from purchasing costume packs. Mind you, I don't have one female character in my arsenal, but until we can get some sort of reaction to the points that have been brought up time and time again, I'll through my hat into this Virtual Women's Rights Movement. You can call it a boycott if you wish, but I simply like to think that my money can be better spent elsewhere until something is done by the dev team to address this reoccurring matter to which many players have continually taken issue, myself included..

Edit: after having read Zwill's reply, I can appreciate addressing these concerns moving forward, but IMPO, I think it's a bit of a cop-out to say "we're too busy to fix sets we've already made". For me, it's a less-than-satisfactory reply. My previous request goes for not just moving forward, but for sets already created. Until they are addressed, I'm going to maintain my stance. I'm not asking for much on behalf of female characters - a jacket here, a pair of pants there.

Also, if you're going to set up a feedback thread for feedback, ensure that someone who actually does have time to respond actually delivers two-way communication to players leaving feedback, lest we think we're delivering feedback to a brick wall.

Keeping balance 1-50, however, absolutely a valid requirement.
    Indeed. Especially since:
    • A majority of toons never get past level 10
    • Premium players can only play with SOs for free
    • Store-bought IOs (or regular IOs) shouldn't be required to play at a baseline
    • Incarnate content can only be played by VIPs
    • Not every VIP player cares for or plays through Incarnate content

In short, the devs should cater to the greatest amount of the playerbase. People who play through Incarnate content (as well put together is it is intended to be) are not that majority.

Simultaneously, the devs would have never gone to a F2P model if there wasn't some sort of profit in it. In that regard, upsetting your Premium players by "forcing" them to buy a $2 / month license in order to be able to play at a baseline is not a very clever business move. Moreover, it would be akin to a bait & switch - one could play for free, but now one would truly have to truly Pay to Win.

I don't foresee such a strategy gaining much traction, to say the very least. It would be far easier to keep the baseline balance of all ATs at the SO level to keep the status quo (and avoid a mountain of rebalance work across all ATs) and then keep offering IOs, AT-Os, and other incentives to make the game more fun / challenging while increasing revenue - without pissing off the Premium player base.
