As much as some posters are eating their own heads, gnashing against the Wailing Wall, or invoking the undead spirit of Jack, I will just say, in the simplest of terms, that I don't understand the reason behind this apparently arbitrary change. It's the first time that I can think of that a certain set of powers was explicitly banned from an encounter (besides the "Master of" challenges or Ouroboros challenges, of course).

Would anyone with a red name care to elaborate. Not that I expect anyone to do so, of course

    Also, corrected patch note below:

Point taken. Not really a hard core PvP environment, admittedly.

Fly is slightly better but still FAILS if someone hits you with an immob.

sooooo, I13 DID NOT CHANGE "PvP being a club for only Super Jump or Super Speed".

so yeah if that's the only hold up, they're good to go for the rollback.

EDIT: And just in case you don't believe me step into RV one night and observe how many players have sj/ss versus how many have flight and lolteleport. I already know the answer but humor me.
I was in RV on Wednesday. Several players had fly, but admiteddly, I can't remember anyone with TP. So although I'll admit that TP is still left in the dust where PvP is concerned, my PvP-lame Stone/ Axe Tank wi th Fly has an easier time participating in PvP with the current rules.

Super Speed was pretty much always the standard and still is. Since i13, slows do pretty much nothing, it is the best option. Super Jump offers some vertical mobility and allows speeders to get close enough to fliers to ground them and make them helpless. It is not as much a necessity.
What's the difference between attacking a flier with -fly powers and attacking a SSer with slow powers? I was just in RV the other day and did pretty well... would have done better if I had remembered to use Mud Pots In fact, PvP is the only reason I use Air Superiority, slotted with +Acc. Besides, there's nothing better for kiting than fly (flying above someone's SJ ceiling), but I guess that makes Fly better for Zone PvP than the Arena.

Back on topic though, and not getting stuck on a single point, the reason I13 travel suppression was to help level the playing field (its questionably results debated above). Revamping the animation rig for independent upper / lower torso would be something entirely new (for CoH anyhow), and might do to even the playing field even further

... but upon further thought, might replace one set of problems with another.

Really, the only way an I13 rollback would occur is if travel suppression wasn't necessary. Which leads back to reworking player models to be able to move and attack simultaneously. Otherwise, you're right back to PvP being a club for only Super Jump or Super Speed.

Should a Blaster with the right IOs have better defense than a Tanker with SOs?
To be fair, I think the main reason why GW was designed with a Mag 100 hold was so that it would be non-trivial for players to bypass with one or two applications of certain powers, since the only way around stacking multiple powers is to put bigger numbers on the table.

Yet, players still found a way to circumvent it, leading to Castle toying around with the whole nerf to CM in the first place.

If some sort of DR were implemented in PvE, it would require multiple passes, not just for player abilities, but also to see how it interacts with NPC encounters. That would require a bit of extra play testing and data mining, especially before being in a place that could be presented in a positive light to players ("Yeah we put in DR, but we tested it against all of these scenarios and made these further adjustments..."). That's the sort of thing you'd want under strict NDA so that soemone doesn't flip out and start badmouthing the changed wholesale before devs can make adjustments or before players even get a chance to judge it for themselves.

The coming storm won't be an invasion from Praetoria. That wouldn't fit with the broad allusions we've heard since. The "Coming Storm" that is alluded to seems to be affecting the whole multiverse... seems to be akin to things like the "infinite earths" DC crisis. My guess is we're already seeing some of the initial effects of the storm ever since dark mirror introduced our dopplegangers.

Since this is a thread for baseless conjecture, here's mine for the "coming storm":

Whoever sets things in motion (a nemesis plot?) he may be inspired by Recluse's Victory and/or Project Destiny. In those, Recluse isn't satisfied with knowing that he wins on some other dimension, he want to bind that dimension to this one, bringing his victory here... colliding those dimensions and all their occupants together.

The difference here, though, is this is a "storm" of dimensions colliding into themselves... coalescing with primal earth. It will set off wars and struggles of epic proportion as reality itself twists and cracks to make room for conflicting histories and the myriad possibilities whittling down to one true reality. Some of our doppleganger encounters are from the earliest incidences... the worlds closet to our own starting to merge over... we're not "merged" with them due to our experineces in sidestepping outside the timestream / dimension hopping. Things will only grow more dangerous as the storm proceeds. Incarnates... spread across all these issues... will deal with these cosmic metaspace collisions. We're talking Issues 20, 21, 22+

After the multiverse crashes, one world will emerge. Mender Silos is trying to set things in motion to guarantee his desired outcome. Our mystery letter-writer (Tyrant?) has his own objectives. Their goal is to influence what this world will be- perhaps to be the gods that make the next world, whether benevolent or in malice. We fight for or against these parties to save what we hold dear or grasp at the power we want for ourselves... battling to the very last moment of existence... when all goes white.

At that point, a new city will emerge. Its past and present will be crafted from the remnants of the once-divided universes, and people will remember it as if it had always been that way... because it has. Parts will resemble Praetoria, Paragon, and even the Rogue Isles (all ultramoded) and its inhabitants will be us... and not. This begins CoH's equivalent of DC's "One Year Later" and Marvel's "Heroes Reborn"-- a reimagining of our world and the heroes within it. A universe that's not quite like the one we see as afterimages as we dream of battles that we don't really remember participating in.

It'll be a new city... and world... that's in desperate need of heroes, again. The City of Heroes will be over. Welcome to City of Heroes 2.0.
My mind is blown. Definitely gets me thinking about the future of the storyline.

That's an excellent point. With competition, especially MMOs in the genre, it makes sense that a "game changer" would stay under wraps as long as possible.

    Quote:
We know Posi has been working on End Game Content. Specifically Incarnates. Which we know Alpha Slot is coming in I19 and we also know more is being a dded into the system. A safe bet would be that the Devs want to keep several aspects of the Incarnate system underwraps until they are ready to announce a more defined version.
While true, we also know that the whole system won't be rolled out in Issue 20. More likely, as Posi has stated, we'll see the second or third tier in Issue 20 (the first being intro'd in I19). But that's not to say they won't have the whole thing mapped out and ready for public scrutiny by teh time I20 goes to open beta.

Might depend on the scope of changes. SS running up walls, for example, would be a stab at competition (although I heard <name redacted> is still having a lot of problems with that mechanic and odd geometry, such as light poles). That would also require a ton of new code, I imagine.

    City of Heroes 2.0
-Not a traditional MMO sequel in that a new box is released, the old game is pushed to the side and the playerbase is fragmented, City of Heroes 2.0 is an evolution and "re-launch" of City of Heroes. By utilizing City of Heroes' current staggering amount of content, revamping the game engine, introducing some new systems and upgrades, City of Heroes 2.0 could be re-launched to the public to compete with other more current MMOs
Thanks, I forgot to port that over from the last post. Worth consideration IMPO.
  11. Note: this thread is for discussion of I20 theories and is nothing more than speculation, plain and simple. This thread should not be used to break the I20 NDA. We can safely discuss theories around I20, so long as they don't purportedly break the NDA.

In past closed betas, NDAs have been inferred through the closed beta user agreement, whereas one agrees to an electronic NDA when logging in. For Issue 20, according to the PAX CoH panel, Issue 20 beta supposedly started last week underneath a physical, signed NDA (IIRC, the last time there was a signed NDA was for the first and second waves of closed beta for I14 - Architect, signed by HeroCon attendees).

What does that mean for Issue 20?

They're probably testing more than just content. Even the GR closed beta didn't require a signed NDA; it just used the standard digital NDA that most closed betas use.

    Which means...?

It means they're probably working on a system, a big system; probably bigger than the Alignment System (which didn't require a signed NDA), but maybe something as big as the Architect System (which did require a signed NDA).

Something else to consider are teh red names who have cut down on their amount of posting (presumably because they're working their butts off): Back Alley Brawler (Animations), Castle (Powers), Pohsyb (Coding), and SexyJay (Art). (Sure, Noble Savage has been posting, but he might have more time to post than Jay. He's also been helping to run an art asset contest that's related to his department.)

    What sort of "big systems"?

Obviously, no one who can post about it can tell us because of the NDA. But there are a few items that have come to mind, thanks to a previous thread.

    Here are some possibilities:

    *****
    Power Pool Customization:

Honestly, I don't think this one would require an NDA, unless it included some sweeping changes, like some serious travel power customization options. Low-hanging fruit (relatively speaking) would include alternate travel animations; more code intensive ideas would include vehicles (and coding when vehicles can and can't be used, like in buildings). Power Pool customization in itself is something the devs want to pursue, but the extent of the customization may determine the budget, resources, and level of testing security involved. It would also tie in with one of Castle's few recent posts about adding alternate animations to certain powers.

This project would involve Art, Coding, Powers, and Animation departments.

    *****

    Separate Upper/ Lower Torso Animations:

PvP changes have been rumored ever since I13. There are many players who did not like the added handicaps of travel suppression, which was created to even out the problems with power rooting.

Because the game engine currently can't animate the upper and lower torso independently, attacks generally root characters, meaning that jousting in PvP is problematics, especially with travel powers like Super Speed or Super Jump; by the time a character can retaliate, the target may already be too far away, with the character rooted during the attack unable to return the joust.

However, if the game engine and animations were recoded to allow upper and lower torso animations separate of each other, players could attack and move simultaneously, in PvE or PvP. This would eliminate rooting, making travel suppression a moot point, and could rewrite the book on PvP. Of course, PvE enemies would enjoy the benefits too, making for more interesting encounters.

The level of such a change would be massive, and typically require a whole new game, because the game engine itself would require modification, not to mention about every animation in the game (including those for non-human frames, such as Jaegers, Arachnos spiders, Snakes, etc.). However, given enough time and resources, such a change could happen in an existing game, it would just require a lot of people and/ or a lot of man-hours. Considering I13 came out in 2008, they may have had a bit of time to work on this already, although Power Customization also took a big bite out of the Animation team's schedule.

This project would involve Art, Coding, Powers, and Animation departments.

    *****

Diminishing Returns in PvE (credit to Samuel_Tow & james_joyce):

Back when the Master of Statesman's Task Force badge was being put into the game, Clear Mind almost suffered a big nerf, in order to reduce effectiveness in stacking. Part of the reason was Ghost Widow. Even with a Mag 100 Hold (Soul Storm), stacked applications of Clear Mind made her hold all but a moot point. Castle's best solution, as he mentioned, would have been to apply diminishing returns to player buffs, whereas the first application applied at full strength, the second application less so, and so on until the nth application provided no benefit. Lacking the tech at the time, Castle reverted the changes to Clear Mind, and everyone was happy (except for Ghost Widow, who continued to get pwnd by teams loaded with CM).

As most PvPers can tell you, DR does exist in PvP. But applying this tech in PvE wouldn't be so much as a balancing issue as possibly opening the game up to more interesting encounters as well as creating a new path for character progression.

But why now? Mostly because of the Incarnate System. If DR were added to PvE, the devs would be able to create Incarnate-level enhancements that might bypass it (or part of it), similar to what the Alpha slot does by bypassing part of ED (at least the version seen in GR closed beta).

This would obviously be a mixed bag change similar to ED, the difference being that if it were rolled out with an Incarnate-level system that works with it, it would lessen the sting that some players would undoubtedly feel. It would also make some existing encounters more interesting, and allow the devs to buff some buffs, knowing that DR would even out multiple applications. It would also require a ton of shake-down by the devs to lessen player reception issues that were seen with ED and I13.

This project would involve the Coding and Powers departments, but probably not the Art or Animation departments.

    *****

What do you think? Do you have any of your own crazy theories about Issue 20 and what could be under the NDA? Consider this more of a brainstorming thread as opposed to "holding your breath" thread. Also, if you're under NDA, please don't get yourself in trouble by posting info under the NDA.
  12. Nah, if you replace the outer fabric with some sort of spill-proof vinyl fabric, like some theater chairs have, it would work just as fine.

  18. I think I broke someone last night. While PvPing in RV with some people going after AV badges, I got a PM telling me "This is why badgers hate badging in PvP zones."

Truth be told, I initially went there for a) pillbox badge work and b) a morbid curiosity to see if anyone would be there. And there was, albeit at first it was just a villain badging group (switching sides and RV badging for AVs, etc.) until some more heroes showed up and things got more even.

Funny thing was, I thought Triumph was dead

Edit: <does a little search> That's why that character name sounded familiar. Sorry Snow Globe, wasn't going to fight you all, but then everybody else jumped in, and I figured "What the hell."

Really like that guy's comment about how a contest here means we're not dead though.

Also think one of our bigger problems is that not many actually read the forums... May want to mention this contest in tw. I've had to do the same with pvpec events, and even normal things like the pd "dev" events.
Was thinking the same thing after playing last night. The contest goes until Oct. 15th, so there is still time to get the word on the street.
  21. I was in RV tonight. Seems like a few people were. Some were looking for AV badges, but others were looking to PvP. I was personally looking for some pillbox and heavy badges, and PvP spontaneously occurred. Imagine that. Coincidentally, it's easier to take down pillboxes when there's player opposition.

    Thanks for the advice PC_guy

    December 1999

“The angels…yes… there is much in store for you yet WHELP!” The Seer reached up, grabbed the gargoyle’s “regal” horns and bent them downwards as a mark of servitude. The gargoyle howled in searing pain.

As he gripped the rail, the memory of a millennium ago rang in his head. The words were spoken to the gargoyle in an age long since past, when he still protected the Masters, his makers, from their dread enemies.

He was a fool for not seeing it earlier.

    Los Angeles.

Gabriel, an elder immortal and the gargoyle’s centuries-long mentor, had asked for Obsidius’ assistance in his new territory, and he had agreed.

Gabriel was an idealistic man. In his hopes to break the shadowy stranglehold the vampiric underworld had around the world’s shrinking energy supply, Gabriel had teams of scientists pour over theories to harness power from the universal fabric to create black-hole energy. Obsidius promised to secure the experiment against any attack from Gabriel’s opposition, using his magic to disguise himself in a more “human” appearance.

Obsidius had failed. The attack was massive, and began right after the reactor’s test activation. The black ops team of Gabriel’s vampiric rivals had done their best to demolish the project. Unfortunately, they had also destroyed the containment field generator in the process, unaware of the consequences.

Now the “spatial reaction” was out of control. It had grown from a small, controlled reaction to an enormous “rip in the fabric of space-time” – or so one of the scientists yelled before he was swept into the oblivion of the black, swirling anomaly, along with anything else not nailed to the floor or gripping the safety rails. And as the claxons rang, it started to take the walls of the lab with it. Obsidius clung to the railing, almost able to touch the emitter self-destruct button mounted on the wall.

And then the rail snapped under the weight of the quarter ton gargoyle. Obsidius was pulled into the vortex, into the void. His vision blurred as he became incorporeal; it was as if his body had turned to putty and was now being extruded into unnatural shapes.

    At first, there was nothing.

Then Obsidius entered the nebulous void between universes and dimensions. Space, time matter, none of these things had any meaning. Yet a voice spoke to him, ominously.

    “OBSIDIUS, WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?”

“Who are you? Where am I?” Obsidius replied…. or at least thought he replied.

“WE ARE THE ENTITIES. WE ARE THE FABRIC OF REALITY. WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?”

Obsidius could not deny his nature as a gargoyle. “I wish to safeguard my allies. I wish to return to my world.”

“YOU DO MUCH IN YOUR WORLD, BUT YOU ARE UNABLE TO RETURN THERE. THE TAPESTRY OF YOUR REALITY UNRAVELS.”

“Unravels? Because of Gabriel’s damnable contraption?”

“HIS “CONTRAPTION” IS THE BEGINNING OF YOUR REALITY’S END. ALTHOUGH IT DOES NOT DESTROY YOUR WORLD, IT BEGINS A CHAIN OF EVENTS THAT RESULT IN ITS DESTRUCTION AND DISRUPTION OF NATURAL ENTROPY”

“But what of my fiends and allies? What of Gabriel and the others?”

“OF THEM, WE CANNOT SAY. SEVERAL THREADS FROM YOUR REALITY ARE REMOVED BEYOND THE NATURAL ORDER AND MUST BE REWOVEN, MUCH LIKE YOURS. THE BEINGS OF YOUR REALITY MADE A CONSIDERABLE MESS THAT REQUIRES OUR ATTENTION, AND CAREFUL CONSIDERATION IS MADE WITH EACH THREAD. YOU ARE FORTUANTE TO HAVE SUCH A RARE CHOICE.”

“What options do I have? I am a gargoyle, without allies or sanctuary. What shall you do? Drop me on some alien world, or on another Earth in the middle of Times Square? What shall they think of me there?” Obsidius retorted.

“DO NOT FORFEIT THIS OPPORTUNITY, OBSIDIUS. WE RARELY GRANT AN AUDIENCE TO BEINGS OF LOWER PLANES OF EXISTANCE. WE COULD LEAVE YOUR FUTURE ENTIRELY TO FATE, IF THAT IS YOUR WISH.”

The magnitude of it all was overwhelming. Gabriel’s machine had apparently led to Armageddon, and those who weren’t killed were floating through the void, like Obsidius. Some would have a choice, and others would be tossed to the hand of Fate.

Obsidius deliberated for an eternity. Finally, he asked, “And what if I accept your opportunity, Entities?”

“IF YOU WISH, WE CAN DELIVER YOU TO A NEW WORLD; TO A PLACE IN NEED OF SUCH A GUARDIAN AS YOU. BUT BE WARNED, TRANSUBSTANTIATION CAN BE UNKIND, ESPECIALLY ON UNNATURAL CONSTRUCTS SUCH AS YOU.”

“What chance have I of again seeing those whom I know from my past?” Obsidius queried.

“THE DIMENSIONAL TAPESTRIES ARE INNUMEROUS, OBSIDIUS. WITHIN THE PLANE OF TIME, WHAT HAS HAPPENED BEFORE CAN HAPPEN AGAIN, IN DIFFERENT TIMES AND PLACES… BUT THERE ARE NO GUARANTEES IN THIS UNIVERSE. HOWEVER, EVEN GIFTED MORTALS CAN HELP TO WEAVE FATE’S STRANDS”

Finally, Obsidius spoke. “I accept your offer, Entities. So be it”

“INDEED. PREPARE YOURSELF, OBSIDIUS. YOU MAY FIND YOURSELF CHANGED. THE LAWS OF MAGIC AND THE SUPERNATURAL VARY BETWEEN TAPESTRIES.”

    June 2003

Hell of a retirement, Michael thought to himself. The city, the world, had barely survived the Rikti. The citizens of the globe were still in shock after the estimated tally of those lost to the halted invasion, both civilian and “cape” casualties. Paragon had been hit the hardest, although it was Britain’s Hero 1 and his Omega Team who had sacrificed themselves in the end to save everyone.

The number of supers was miniscule at best. The Surviving Eight, the eight Paragon heroes who survived the war – including Michael – did what they could to help sort through the rubble. New capes, most of them kids answering the nation’s call for recovery aid, were coming to Paragon and registering with the FBSA every day. Those kids would need training, and Michael had volunteered to help. But before that could happen, Galaxy City would need to be fixed up.

Amid the drone of jackhammers, bulldozers and dump trucks, Michael continued to pick up pieces of an apartment building that had been blasted during the war, helping the civilian work crews in the city’s effort to repair, rebuild, and find anyone who was still MIA. He turned his dark-skinned, sunglasses-and-dust-mask-clad face towards the next large chunk of concrete, bent at the knees, and got a good grip on it with his powered gloves.

    *****

Everything was black. The gargoyle could not move. He was buried. He tried to use his magic to meld with the rubble and crawl through it, but discovered he no longer had the ability to do so. He tried to unbury himself, but was pinned underneath concrete and girders.

He heard voices above, and machinery. The rubble started to move. Suddenly, a large section of concrete on top of him was removed, exposing him to the sun.

Obsidius weakly tried to shield his face from the sun – and then realized that he was not affected by the light. No longer having the magic to create his human guise, he uncovered his monstrous visage, and the blinding rays of sunlight warmed his face for the first time in ages.

A deep voice spoke to him. “Relax, friend, we’re here to get you out of this mess.” As his eyes refocused, Obsidius saw a dark-skinned man with mechanical gauntlets, who had lifted the slab of concrete off of him. The man turned around and threw the debris into a dump truck fifty feet away, which reverberated with the sound of taking the heavy load. The man seemed unconcerned by Obsdius’ appearance.

    *****

Michael looked back at the creature he just uncovered under the debris. He punched up his comlink.

“Dispatch, I’ve got an MIA. A… gargoyle? Shiny, jet black, eight foot tall, give or take. Looks like his wings have been broken off”

A few seconds later, a female voice responded on the comlink. “Are you sure Brawler? That doesn’t match Gargoyle’s description at all”

“Not the Gargoyle, a gargoyle,” Michael clarified amid the jack-hammering in the background. He repeated his description to the PPD dispatch officer.

A moment went by. Finally, dispatch responded “… doesn’t match anything in the FBSA records. We’ll send agents to your location ASAP.”

“Gabriel?” The gargoyle groggily spoke to Michael, his jet black eyes cracked open.

“No, my name’s Michael” he spoke back to the creature. “Some people call me the Back Alley Brawler.”

He offered the gargoyle a gloved hand to help it out of the rubble. The creature accepted it and, dragging itself to its feet, replied, “I am called Obsidius.”

Although he didn’t know it yet, Michael had officially introduced his first new cape into Paragon City.

In time, Obsidius would grow his wings back, un-bend his horns through magic and determination, and become one of Paragon’s greatest guardians… but that is for another story.

I'd say more like homages or parodies. That was the whole point though.

I also think that Snyder's vision was better than this proposal. It is possible, after all, to let the audience draw the allegories between Watchman's original time frame and the one in which it was finally released to the theater audience. It's unnecessary to update it to a modern version, because a lot of audience members will draw those parallels themselves without needing to have their noses rubbed in it or upsetting the fans with a vision that's farther from the source material.
