Quote:Case in point: Richard Garriot vs. NCSoftSimple: THE LAW.
BaB wasn't a "public figure or face" for the company (his role on the boards was an informal one, in no official capacity as spokesperson). That means state and federal employment privacy law applies- those SEVERELY curtail what you can say about a person and the circumstances of their departure.
I know California's privacy laws are even tougher than my own states, and here we cannot NAME who was let go in what layoff or for what reason. Heck, even if we're called for an employment referral, we can't really say anything specific.
Things are a little different when you're the head and/or spokesperson. There, your role officially involves the public, or in interfacing with shareholders. This more-visible position sometimes gives a little more latitude to what a company can say about a departure, but even then, you'll rarely find anyone on the record with anything negative to say.The press release they put out for his departure got NCSoft in a lot of (legal) hot water. I'm sure the whole stocks thing didn't help either though

Quote:The problem is that many people consider the word "layoff" in a negative bias. BAB's departure from Paragon Studios may not have been negatively biased. Some people get advanced notice of these things, even months ahead of time. As others have mentioned, it could have even been reciprocal or positive. Without further detail that most of us will never receive, anything beyond the drab Marketing quip delivered by TheOcho is purely conjuncture. That might be the case except for the fact that BAB was one of them, that speaks toward something else. But by all means, keep up your drumbeat of blindly extolling and supporting anything and everything that NCSoft does. I'm sure some simple minded folks with poor reasoning skills will be happy to dance along.

How do I board some Justice Girls?

Quote:I must give Avatea higher marks than her American counterparts. Certainly, as Coin explains, she's not had the easiest job with CoH. Not only did she have to take up the slack of her laid-off compatriots, but she also had to move all the way from England to Mountain View to do so. That's some chops right there.Back when the boards were separate there were at least 3 mods for the EU boards, Bridger followed by Ghost Raptor covered the English boards, Kerensky covered the German boards and another mod covered the French boards, but I'm damned if I can remember his name!
Then they all got laid off and Avatea has covered all three from the US ever since.
So she's doing the work of 3 people and still manages to be very supportive!
Not saying that the marketing people are good, mind, just pointing out that some of them do their best to help and be supportive. Avatea and Mod08 appeared unexpectedly at an in-game wedding the other day, it was lovely.....like they were on some sort of date....hmmmm, now there's some gossip for the boards!!
Speaking of lay-offs, je-saits sums up my feelings on the latest hot topic concisely. I understand that TheOcho really can't say much in terms of the leaving of one Christopher Bruce, but obvious Marketing quips are obvious. -
I heard that the Nemesis Steam Horses got laid off.

Quote:Rumors are one thing. We had our fill of rumor-mongering when Jack Emmert would drop hints about Avilains and such - things that ended up being purely conceptual with little to no development (except perhaps wing tech). Certainly, we don't need that sort of thing happening again, because it builds in some players unreal expectations of what really ends up coming down the pipe later. We're talking about Our Community Representatives, the 'too busy with other things' excuse won't fly here because communicating with us is the main part of their jobs...
Killing false rumors is part of their job.
Even commenting on false rumors can strengthen them. Nothing in working directly with people is ever cut and dried. -Mod08
However, certain player concerns should justify a red name response. Even if a unified front needs to be observed, there would be nothing wrong in responding to a discussion thread about a contested feature or pack with "Nothing will change, but we've definitely noted your feedback for future consideration." Certainly, to most players, that would be a better response than no response at all.
The main point of my OP, in retrospect, is that players on the forums don't like stonewall responses to valid questions and concerns.
OTOH:
Quote:it is an absolutely valid point and one I raised earlier in one of these discussions- there is no value in answering the question "when did you stop beating your wife?" Ignoring it is the only rational response.
On the flip side, a valid thread about problems with the current PvP system, along with constructive criticism and suggestions for solutions, should merit a red name response. The same thing could be said about the Base system. However, it's been some time since such threads had any red name feedback or responses. Even if such things are being worked on and cannot be completely discussed, a response such as "these issues are being considered for future address" would be OK.
There again, some players might think that the red names are simply stringing them along, especially if "problems" go "unfixed" for years on end, so in the end, it depends entirely on the context and the history of the subject. However, I'd rather not go off onto a tangent about either PvP or Bases.
He simply wanted to keep it not only off of the Community Digest, but also an searches for all posts by Moderator8 or TheOcho. And although I appreciate the response, I do sort of wish I could have received a legitimate reply instead.
That being said, there is a marked increase in OCR activity, due to holiday announcements and the I19 feature page going up. There's even been some more idle chit chat and, amazingly, replies to posts. I'll be cautiously hoping that the red names can make my OP eat crow. -
That's good to know. For a guy like me who started off w/ the Complete Collection, it's harder to keep track of what we got "with the issue" and what we got with the Complete Collection.

That, I can fully get behind. More drops, more XP, more Inf, etc.
-
That's because there isn't one. Yes, one red name post could easily lessen the amount of duplicate posts on this subject, just one little post

Quote:Incorrect. If you plan to run a CoP trial, you'll need a raid teleporter. However, Vaults, IoP bases, and Dimensional Anchors are not currently necessary since the "IoP' is currently granted as a per-player temp power.Note that the Raid Telepad ONLY functions to teleport your team to an 'enemy' base in a PvP raid.
Since Base PvP is disabled, it has no functional use at all right now.

Edit: You also need a Mission Computer or an Oracle to run the CoP. -
Not holding my breath. I'll believe it when I see results. However, I wish your committee the best of luck. If there's one thing that CoH has above other MMOs in the genre, its's the Base system. It's about time the devs addressed its shortcomings.

Video walkthroughs are nice... I guess I was just hoping for more narrative. Also, screen caps of menu systems shouldn't be in a video, IMPO. They don't do much to relay a message except to people who already know what they are, and look overly complicated to a layman (in regards to the Tips interface).
Also, using plot point spoilers in a video screen cap also is, well, spoilerific. Showing off Praetoria is one thing, but divulging plot points just to show off some spiffy game mechanic is a little frustrating. If you had to use any screenshot of that mechanic, it should have been the obvious "Join the Resistance" or "Stay Loyalist" moral choice in the tutorial, because anyone who's read any press release or the GR web site will know that's coming anyhow. -
Ironically, bulldozing is one of the reasons I don't team so much these days. Was tired of blowing through content.

It's OK. The figures are great, but the car's a bit angular and flat. Everything else looks nice though
-
Base system updates? I'd be surprised.

Quote:The idea of instancing the raid has been around since it was introduced. Unfortunately, there is no sort of raid mechanic to support it (selecting a raid leader, tagging characters for entry into a certain instance, etc.). I'm not sure if some CoP mechanic could be applied to it, but it would be cool if it could (one instance with multiple 8-man teams).Hive zone cap is 50 get a few leechers and a few dual boxers in there and it can be annoying. I've seen it suggested that raids become Instances so that if you DC you just zone back into the instance if your on a team, don't know if that is doable though.
Quote:Couldn't have been thousands unless they removed the zone cap i think those zones cap out at 150-200 i forget the actual number but it's in the low hundreds. The rednames can manually pull people into a full zone but somehow i don't see them doing that for hundreds of people.
Take an average player character, especially on that uses fancy costume pieces with a lot of polygons, or a back option like wings. Multiply the number of polygons on a player character. Add in any FX like capes and auras. Now, multiply that by the number of player characters in a given field of vision, and then add in polygons and rendering any NPCs in the area, and then finally the environment itself.
It's even worse in combat. While rendering 50 characters (like in a Hami raid), the game also has to render their powers (extra geometry, FX, etc.) in addition to the Hamidon, any mitos, and the Hive /Abyss geometry. Rikti Raids are even worse when one considers the sheer amount of NPCs that need to be rendered, as opposed to one Hami and some groups of mitos.
Ultimately, one of the key reasons why the player limit is lower, especially in the Hive/ Abyss, is to reduce lag and rendering issues. Pre-I9, when the zone cap in the HIve was 200, at a certain point (due to all the powers and FX going off) one's computer would just stop rendering player characters and GMs, the latter making it easier for someone to grief the raid (before the encounter was changed to remove GMs once the Hami appeared). To make rendering and lag more manageable, the amount of players required for the encounter was reduced when the encounter was revamped.
And although the game's recommended system requirements have increased since Ultra Mode, its minimum requirements are still the same, making increasing the player cap because of improvements to the game improbable. -
Sorry, you'll spend far more time trying to re-earn those badges on another character. Coincidentally, NCSoft makes more money the more time you subscribe to the game

Quote:...(...) needing a combination of relaxing escape and extra connection. CoX was great for me in this regard a few years back.
That experience combined with my perception of an involved, responsive and generally generous and enthusiastic development team fostered a deep sense of loyalty to this title, Paragon studios and even the distributor NC Soft.
In recent months though, my sense of loyalty has eroded significantly. But I can't fully put my finger upon why. Yes the party pack thing is part of it. Yes the extremely low value of the GR complete pack (which I bought) is another part of it. Yes the lack of redname participation on the forums is another part of it. Yes an overall underwhelmed personal response to GR itself is another part of it. (The rolling release of the game with powersets and ultramode being released sort of as issues sort of as the expansion was a miscalculation in my mind. Made me feel like GR was a lot less substantial when it finally dropped. Plus it makes all the prior "free" issues seem like almost nothing once GR related aspects are removed.) Anyways, I've found myself in a lull again where I just can't be bothered to log in anymore. I've hit this point before and taken breaks, three to six months at a time.
But during MOST of those periods (...), I remained subscribed to the game. I guess sometimes that was so I could just log in on occasion for a fix or to see if I was ready to come back. But mostly it was out of loyalty to the game and its creators.
I understand the assertions that NC Soft and Paragon are both businesses. And that they are out for profit. On the other hand, some small businesses, like restaurants and landlords rely upon long term customer loyalty. Maybe I'm a fool though to have ever offered up my loyalty as if an MMO could ever be a cottage industry. The seeming trend to make a buck off of every small thing produced for the game has definitely helped me come to the decision that at this point, if I'm not actually playing the game that month, I'm not going to carry the credit card charge. There are some cultural institutions, like local museums, who get my dime each year for a membership, even if I go but four or five times a year. For better or worse, CoX, which was the only digital institution I esteemed in that manner, is no longer on that list. If I'm not playin', I won't be payin'.
... as loathe as I am to admit it, I'm at the same exact point with CoX. Certainly, other factors are contributing to this, such as my wife's inactivity in the game, my vacant SG (which all but disbanded long before GR), and other games coming out this fall and winter on other platforms (which I am, but current forum rules, unable to discuss by name). However, the current colder shoulder by the OCR staff certainly hasn't kept my opinion of the game as warm as it has been in the past. And that's hard to admit with friends still in the game and a 6.5 year investment. -
Yes, just as well as any other AT, if you know what you're doing (ie: don't take all of your pets out of Bodyguard mode, etc.).
