I use the /search feature multiple times daily, always did ; in fact, it shows interesting trends over a long enough time period.
From when I joined (nov 2008) to june 2009, heroside population on Freedom at European hours (during the 12h - 22h timeframe, GMT +1) was consistently in the ~700 range.
Since september 2009 (I took a break during july/august so can't pinpoint a specific dropoff), it's down to ~400 at the exact same hours.
Freedom still consistently shows as the most populated server, being last on the list unless my previous played alt was from Freedom (which bumps the server to the top).
I'm certainly not saying the game is dead ; that's a ridiculous argument to make... About as ridiculous as to say everything is fine and the game is stronger than ever.
Commercially, it might be fine for all I know. Less activity doesn't imply less subs, especially with CO on the market some players might share their time between both games ; although with the staffing up Paragon Studios has done, you'd think they'd shoot for a higher number of subs. Here's hoping Going Rogue is a hit.
Still, it doesn't change the fact that I am seeing less people ingame when I play and the pool of players available for teaming is smaller than it used to be for me. Try to argue that and I'll just laugh at your face. I use the search function. I'll believe the numbers the search function is showing over anyone's word on these forums (unless, of course, it's a dev telling me the search function is broken...). -
I think if you dislike FA you might dislike ELA, as there's lots of similarities between both... Then again I don't do the end drain thing and for all I know it might change the experience significantly.

You're going to run with a team that'll be over the softcap with tons of controls on top of that. You could play a brute with brawl only and be just fine.
That said, to get the best bang for your buck on such a team, I'd suggest a resistance based brute with a damage aura and an AoE oriented primary. Beyond that, I don't think specifics really matter. -
Looking at it, TG seems to be slightly superior than LD in terms of effective damage. I guess I was too used of Siphon Life (which is actually a good attack) for scrappers.
Now, TG is still much weaker than DB or Gloom and I'd never use it over these attacks, only during the gap.
Quick and dirty math, taking shortcuts but it should remain a good approximation :
TG has a 2.508s animation (considering server ticks) and debuffs regen by 50% for 20 seconds.
Level 50 AVs have 85% resistance to -regen, bringing this to -7.5%.
They regen ~93hp/s, which means -7.5% regen prevents ~7hp/s (equivalent to 7 damage per second)
It lasts 20 seconds, so that's 140 "damage".
140 / 2.508 = 55.62 "damage" per second for TG.
LD does 102 damage (considering enhancements, and 1.5x tar patch) and animates in 2.112s.
That's 102 / 2.112 = 48.3 damage per second for LD.
TG seems to be a clear winner seeing as it heals for more than 4x as much when LD is slotted for damage ; LD having a faster animation means the real big hitters come back up faster, but it's so close it's probably better to just use TG. -
I thought Black Hole could be used on the AV if taking too much damage - of course, he'll regen some, but sometimes it's better than dying. Ultimately it's probably not a very important power and Nightfall could easily replace it, as you could just as well jump/fly away if needed.
You're right on the money on LD vs TG. I'd use LD during the attack chain gap if I need to top off a small drop in health, otherwise if I was badly hurt I'd use TG. Another advantage is you could also use both in a row for maximum healing in a tough spot. -
I don't know man, it sounds like it'd be rather painful when you have to go... You know.

Quote:I can think of about two or three mobs with critical hits, and defense isn't the same thing as DDR (which, for the record, can reach 95% for these two specific powersets, not 90%).
Critical hits and -resistance will equally neuter a resist based toon-- especially critical hits. Most resist based sets don't even approach 45% values, so while resistance resists debuffing, it's nowhere near the 90% debuff protection that SR and Shield can achieve. -
The syntax can be anything. /suppressclosefx, /suppressCloseFx, or even /SUPPRESSCLOSEFX, it works. On my ELA scrapper where it doesn't suppress the ELA powers, it still suppresses the leaping pool. On my Fire tanker, everything is suppressed just like before. I haven't checked other characters yet.
I play a wide range of characters and all of their effects are (were ? as I said, didn't check yet) completely suppressed with this command. No FX or anything left. Before I15, Willpower was the only powerset I've played where it didn't.
Edit : just got Lightning Field, which suppresses correctly with the /suPpReSsClOsEfX 1 command (yes, I did type it that way). All three armors however don't suppress. Energize doesn't suppress, but this is standard behavior compared to all other powersets seeing as this is a click power.
-
Any/any. That's not a ******** answer, seriously.
Now, if you have a specific goal in mind (AV soloing without insps/temps, +4/x8 missions, PVP) you'd want to state it to have detailed answers, in my opinion. -
Hello,
The title says it all. I've done a quick search and didn't find anything on it, so just throwing that out there.
Before I16, all powers were completely suppressed clientside while using the /suppresscloseFX 1 command (with /suppresscloseFXdist set as a sufficiently large number). Now, the command doesn't seem to do anything for elec armor.
This is on any of the power customization options (original, bright electricity and dark electricity).
Edit : Actually I suppose I should have mentioned this is scrapper ELA. It might be working on villain versions, for all I know.
Still seems to work properly for Tanker Fire Armor, so I suppose this might be because it's a "new" powerset. -
Quote:Personnally, I'd use DB -> Gloom -> DB -> (gap), using click powers as needed during the gap (TG when hurt, FS, Tar Patch, SD, Hasten or HT when it's up, otherwise TT), with the apoc set in DB - or at the very least the apoc proc. That proc does 105 damage when it hits and, with a 33% chance to go off, that's on average 35 damage. Seeing as Dark Blast does 36 damage base, that proc alone is as good as 95% damage enhancement - and of course, it "stacks" with 95% damage enhancement, giving you a dark blast dealing ~110 damage rather than ~75 damage, which is a pretty big DPS boost.
the normal rotation of DB, Gloom, TG, TT, keeping HT up on auto)
Another option is to pick OG instead of Air Superiority, as it can perma-stun minions and, combined with HT, will stun the AV while triangles are down (1/3 of the time). Keeping perma-stunned minions around can be useful to fuel Soul Drain and Dark Consumption, although it obviously makes the alpha part more tricky than it already is. Pet AI tends to ignore mezzed mobs, especially if there's closer, fighting foes, so the dark servant being on the AV and you at range with minions, this isn't a problem... Although it makes positioning correctly harder, and sometimes it's something you might not be able to pull off.
Here's what I'd use for the task, if it was my alt :

Apoc proc in DB, damage procs in DB and Gloom and Tar Patch stacking ~40% of the time, bringing effective DPS to ~110-120ish, which is enough to beat standard AV regen without regen debuffs. Note this isn't considering Soul Drain, which would boost the damage a bit.
Downtime of about 15-20s on Hasten.
HT up every minute => debuff is active 50% of the time.
Net recovery of 2.99 end per second with all combat toggles active (the perf shifter proc being averaged to +0.2 end per second). This isn't enough to sustain attacking indefinitely by itself, but with DC every 2 minutes refilling a full end bar with perma-stunned minions around, it might be OK.
32.8% ranged defense, 25.9% AoE, which should be alright once the tohit debuffs are set ; there's some decent resistances and max HP to take on the alpha too. I'd use the same routine you suggested, except for casting Fearstome Stare before HT and Tar Patch ; I'd use these two powers only after I'm sure the AV is well debuffed and I've recovered from the alpha (full life), to maximize damage during the -regen and -res. -
Salut,

Nihilii - my scrapper, a nihilistic young woman.

Quote:Not a vet, but if you ask me with the build sacrifices required to make one of these three combos workable against +4/x8 without insps, you'd probably be able to make a fire/shield/fire with better damage and possibly still better mitigation.
Do you vets think a normal farm scrapper (Spines/Fire or Spines/Dark or Fire/Fire) would be able to handle those types of spawns?
Now, if you don't mind using insps, all these combos should be pretty fine seeing how fast you're going to kill mobs and get insp drops. -
1/ Empathy, radiation, thermal, all have the same numbers on their AoE heal.
One thing you might want to know is if you do that, you'll be considered a bad player by many good players (not saying it's true or not).
2/ I believe Freedom is the busiest one, with Virtue a close second. I've seen sharp population drops compared to only 2 months ago on these servers at european hours, though (no clue if that's the same on other servers or at US hours). -
I'm on the "form your own team" camp... and at the same time I can sympathize with people who don't want to do it, because I don't like to either.
It's not like forming a team is as easy as inviting people and fighting. You can't move at your own pace anymore (i.e., I sometimes have to AFK every few minutes,; as a teammate there's always downtime during which I can do that, as a leader I have to recruit, select missions, etc. ), you have to cater to what other folks want to do, sometimes you get into arguments or get blamed ; there's about one hundred reasons I could list but basically it comes down to this : when I load up a video game, it's not for socializing, but blowing stuff up.
I like playing with players, but I'd rather not deal with the people behind the players unless I absolutely have to. As a teammate, I don't. As a team leader, I do.
That being said, I know I'm the problem - and that applies to everyone who complains about not enough people to team. Accept your lazyness and either do something about it or don't annoy everyone else with it. -
It was a nice weekend and monday morning playing without lag. Thankfully monday's maintenance seems to have fixed that, and I am now back in the red spike club. Yay.
-
There's another advantage for resistance, if you consider what tohit buffs do to defense.
By nature I believe defense should be numerically more powerful than resistance, because resistance is always a fixed value and you'll get the same expected performance from it everytime ; meanwhile, defense will inevitably fail you at some point.
This isn't getting into individual powerset balance or IOs, just my opinion on the mechanics. -
I wouldn't play CoH (or any game for that matters) in virtual reality. For me one of the biggest draw of video games is doing stuff I can't do in real life. That, and I'm already not interested in using programs like teamspeak because I don't want to be cut off from my social life while gaming, and you can guess how bad VR would be in that regard.
-
SD is the best choice, but that doesn't mean the other two are bad. It's not really possible to provide a build without you specifying your budget and playstyle.
-
My namesake (which I reroll a lot, and will reroll again come I16) is still my favorite toon despite having much more powerful alts.
-
I shudder to think what your average is if you believe an AT capable to solo archvillains and giant monsters with ease is "below average". You'd probably think all my characters completely suck.
-
Assuming you want to do it without insps/temps go with Kranik's advice.
Personnally I like using insps on my AV soloing blasters so I can get into melee for the highest damage attacks. Of course, there's also the risk of getting hit by the AV highest damage melee attacks, and using insps means you're operating with a time limit. Ultimately, it's probably less efficient in terms of player deaths per AV kill, but I find it much more thrilling.
Here's what I'd use for that purpose on a fire/fire :

Seeing as darks have a strong -regen power that's easily up half of the time, they're better off for AV soloing than most other ATs out there. It's only when you compare them to rads / colds / traps that they look bad.
Softcapping ranged is definitely not how I'd go about it, with such strong tohit debuffs it'll affect AVs even with their 85% res. I mean DN is ~30% alone, so is Fearstome Stare, so is Chill of the Night from the Dark Servant, which also uses DN sometimes, each attack also debuffs by ~10% and AV soloing requiring constant attacks you should be easily applying a constant -80%, -100% tohit to the AV. 85% resisted, that's still a hefty 12~15%, meaning you can shoot for 35% defense and be just fine.
