My take? Characters of the 'zappy' power variety (like Black Lightning, Cyclops, the Human Torch, or the Green Lanterns) are well-served by learning some basic, baseline-human-type self-defense. Powers or not, their bodies work the same way as everyone else' for giving or taking a punch.
Which is why I like the X-Men for this, as I stated in my original post.
And I'm not saying that powered heroes have to forgo using their powers completely.* Some of them could stand to practice more (having a Danger Room or VR training, and I know Green Lanterns have to go through a boot camp) and heck, some powered heroes have been told so, many times. Usually its' from a fellow powered hero who DID practice and hone using his/her powers, or a bodyswap, such as:
Emma Frost being in Iceman's body and using his powers in ways that he did not even know he could do.
Batman getting Superman's powers (and it does happen often) and using them in more tactical ways than Superman does. (Then again, Batman trained for years to use tactics, and Superman did not grow up being taught how to fight)
Kyle Rayner was ported into J'onn's body once and discovered that he could pretty much do the same thing with J'onn's body that he could with his ring, using shapes and creating weapons that J'onn would not consider. (Then again, J'onn isn't a comic book/anime reader whereas Kyle was, so J'onn would not have the same ideas.)
Some Green Lanterns have been told that they weren't being imaginative enough with their rings (Hal Jordan), some were told that they were overthinking their constructs (John Stewart) and some had other Lanterns and Heroes say "was all that really necessary? (Kyle Rayner; when most Lanterns would make a giant fist, Kyle would make a Gundam)
For some reason, Plastic Man was the only hero that I didn't feel this was a problem on. Some of the shapes he'd turn himself into were usually something you'd expect from Kyle Rayner.
*I forget the name, but there is a certain Green Lantern that prefers to use purely physical attributes and doesn't like to rely on his ring all that much. I know he's made out of stone. -
I've seen so many heavy folks, or folks out of shape, I would tell myself "there is no way I'm ever going to let that happen to me"
Joining the military helped as well.
Now I hear most folks say "I don't have time to exercise" but they somehow find time to watch a TV show.....or three.
I'd had a rather high metabolism all of my life (it runs in the family, but there are exceptions) but still.....that isn't a total free pass to binge eat. So I burn off what I eat whenever I can. (My job is exercise enough some days!)
Another motivator: We may never get super powers in real life. Being fit is a good second option though! -
Quote:Or other equalizers, such as Batman's gadgets, or Captain America's shield. If your power is to shoot anything, Bats, Cap, or any other "badass normal" without a gun or bow will only get a shot in if you majorly screw up, at which point you deserve to lose.
.
Wildcat is the only badass normal (unless you count his ability to have to be killed 9 times in a row consecutively as a power*) who would attempt something like that.....and he often does.
*IIRC, Wildcat's Nine Lives don't mean x9 anymore, but now mean "if you want to kill me, you have to do it 9 times a row within a short time." His lives reset to 9 if an enemy fails to reach that number. -

Quote:While I do understand this when referring to invulnerable or highly durable opponents, some people at the same time think "superpowers = automatic immunity from most attacks"
Essentially, unless you've got the sort of Mary Sueish author favoritism that guys like Batman and Captain America enjoy, there comes a point where you need powers of your own to stand a chance against a superpowered opponent. It's like going unarmed into a fight with a guy with an automatic weapon and body armor who knows where you are at all times. There's only one way that fight can turn out.
I won't link to TV Tropes but it does cover something similar. But honestly though, if you don't have some super level of durability, and your only power is to shoot fire or ice, if Batman or Captain America can get close enough to land a punch, you most likely will be K.O. -
Quote:For what it's worth, the enemies who are actually able to injure Wolverine like this are because they can match his ferocity (Sabretooth and Cyber) or are master martial artists (Shingen Yashida) or use telepathic powers in addition to fighting skill (Mr. X)Bishop is the same way. He has to get shot for us to see his powers. Wolverine and Bishop always annoyed me because of that. Your told how great a fighter Wolverine is, but the majority of his fights consist of him getting stabbed/shot until his opponent slips up so Wolverine can cut them. Bishop on the other hand is like a magnet for guns/energy blasts. Most heroes go full runs without getting shot, but Bishop gets capped every issue, multiple times.
I think Shingen developed a style that focused on pressure points and nerve endings, which caused Wolverine a lot of pain, even with the adamantium skeleton. (He used poison in massive amounts to cheat though.)
Mr. X used telepathic powers to predict Wolverine's moves. Before that, he was able to beat the Taskmaster, and made it look easy. Wolverine had to into a berserker rage (making him immune to mind reading.......like trying to read the mind of someone that is insane) to beat Mr. X. -
From what I remember, Zordon would tell stories of warriors who fought with him as far back as 10,000 years ago. I assume that he meant they were ancient Rangers.

Quote:Makes sense. Otherwise you'd have to have copies of rangers who have worn multiple colors across teams. Tommy Oliver being the best example as:My husband thinks one possibility is early Ranger teams get morphed into alien rangers, like what they did with Kakuranger when they brought that footage over. I can't argue with that...
Mighty Morphin Green Ranger
Mighty Morphin White Ranger*
Zeo Red Ranger
Turbo Red Ranger
Dino Thunder Black Ranger
*I once saw a wallpaper of every Sentai team in Japan. The White Ranger we know was on a team of Sentai who had entirely different costumes than our Mighty Morphin counterparts. Either that team of Sentai got new costumes that we never saw, or the White Ranger was part of a different team in Japan. -

Constructive post is constructive? Yes mine's about farming, what the Dev's loathe, but really. I like to sit in a big cave farm, and afk as I lvl. So I can do other things, now I wait around for 2 hours trying to get a farmer and fail. AND before you go "goplaythegameinsteadofwaiting" So I get a lvl that I can prob get in a short farm in 8 minutes? -
Quote:Currently in the post Mephisto era that is running in the mainstream Spiderman books, Spidey has currently lost his spider-sense and has taken lessons from Shang-Chi and has developed the new super maxed out matrix style martial art called "the way of the spider".
It's the inner child in me that always wondered how Spider-Man would perform after formal martial arts training. He can already hit hard, and martial arts emphasizes that it's just as important to know where to hit as well. It'll be interesting to see now that he'll be able to do both.
It reminds me of a story idea I had once of Spider-Man disappearing and returning with ninjitsu training. -
Quote:Batman has even told Superman this before....that he doesn't use his powers in unique or different ways, and lacks finesse.Superman's the most obvious example of this. He's so used to being invulnerable, he almost never bothers to dodge a blow. He just stands there and takes it in the chest. That causes problems when it turns out to be something that can hurt him. You'd think he'd learn.
There are times when Batman gets Superman's powers, and uses them in ways that Superman would have never thought of. -
I am yet another person that lacks the amount of points needed.
-
-
Another exception that I just thought of: the powered heroes who happen to be geniuses.
-
This came from reading JLA: Act of God. I'd heard bad things about it, but had never read it myself, so I did so last night.
And then saw the storyline in the "Idiot Ball" section of TV Tropes.
Still, it made me wonder in comics, movies, and animation.....do you think heroes rely on their powers too much?
I myself would say yes, depending on the character. For example, a hero gets powers through a science experiment or some other origin, and usually decides it's enough. Regardless of the origin, most heroes stop working out (if they used to) after receiving powers, or don't train to use their powers in unique situations. The X-Men are an exception, which I will explain below.
I can think of some examples in which characters lost their powers, but it did not seem to affect them in the slightest. Storm is one of my favorites......after she lost her powers, not only did she keep leading the X-Men, but she was also able to beat opponents who still had their powers, just through martial arts training.
The X-Men have gotten used to losing their powers so many times (mutant power nullifying collars, M-Day, et al) that just about all of them decided to undertake martial arts. And each one of them is very good at it.
Going away from comics, Iori Yagami lost his violet flames, and you'd think it'd take away his will to fight. He more or less went "So?" and still participated, with techniques that make his fingernails seem like blades.
Now I can think of several characters who used their powers above anything else, and when they lost them, they weren't able to fight crime without them. I won't list them as there are so many, but Spider-Man is an example. Maybe he'd never consider that his powers might be dampened or lost in the past, but of many powered characters who would benefit from martial arts training, I would place Spider-Man at the top of the list. (I am aware that he did take some lessons from Shang Chi in the ultimate universe.)
Thoughts? -
I was daydreaming today about this and came up with some examples.
Durable: Not invulnerable, but I can still take a lot of punishment before I go down.
Examples: Spider-Man, Wonder Woman, Luke Cage, Wolverine, Captain America, trained martial artists through body control (Batman, Iron Fist, Shang Chi, et al)
Invulnerable: With a few exceptions, most forms of attack can't hurt me
Examples: Superman, Thor, Doomsday, Juggernaut (here only due to psi weakness), Plastic Man, The Hulk
Invincible: Throw whatever you like at me.....I absolutely cannot be injured.
Examples: The Saint Of Killers was the only example I came up with at the moment
How does that look? Any other additions? -

Somehow, the code to their next project accidentally leaked onto the servers today and people caught a glimpse of the big secret project we've all been wondering about...
More information about the upcoming game title can be found in this thread (screenshots found in later replies)!

Trying not to be cynical, but I hope this show doesn't get cancelled with the others that will.
Which ones? Only time will tell. -
Well....wow.
There was a name that I asked for ingame, as the person who has it doesn't come to the forums at all, so they never saw this thread.
I was rather polite when asking for it, but got a less than stellar response, which pretty much in a shell was telling me to have children with myself. -

Quote:Last night several people in our Global reported their salvage and recipe inventories filling up at an alarming speed, despite the Paragon Rewards granted increases. It was most prominent at x6-x8 (my husband filled up his 105 Salvage slots within three x6 Tips, which had never happened before).
This is clearly a sneaky, underhanded move by Paragon Studios to force us into spending large amounts of cash in their store to buy Recipe and Salvage inventory increases. I am shocked and appalled at this attempt to bleed more money out of your most faithful customers.
Sorry. I get the joke, but I had to do this. -
