I have seen no noticeable difference one way or another. (WinXP w/9600GT)

    [/ QUOTE ]

Not much of a difference here either, if at all. (Windows Vista on a 9800GT.)
  2. I remember this....it used to happen to me quite often on my old machine.

Try logging in safe mode and see what that does.

Recently my laptop's video card started dying (curse you teal dots of doom! )... so now I'm in the market for a new laptop!

The one I'm looking at right now has a GeForce GTX 260M with 1GB onboard memory... I'm wondering how that compares to the 8600M GS with 128 or 256MB (can't recall which) onboard memory in the laptop that died? From some googling, it sounds like it'll blow the pants off the old one, both in performance () and in heat output (), does that sound about right?

    [/ QUOTE ]

    That sounds about right.

Try disabling your virus program. It happened to me at one point that after a patch, my virus program kept scanning everything incoming from the game. It slowed down my system so bad I was ready to quit the game, placed several support tickets about it, and finally reinstalled my OS. I tried the game w/o my virus program installed and it worked fine. Installed the program and game went to crap.

Also if trying to load said toon keeps crashing your game and hence system, put a support ticket in and ask them to move your toon to another zone.

The same thing happened to me. I thought the lag was the fault of the game servers, when in fact, it was my antivirus program.

Ouroboros is pretty off-world. So is the Shadow Shard.

Ouroboros isn't off-world, it's physically located somewhere on the same planet as Paragon City.

    [/ QUOTE ]

Hmm. I was under the impression that Oroborous existed outside of normal time and space.

  7. I served in a different branch of the military, but I have heard some marines say that being called an ex-marine was disrespectful....that term is usually reserved for a marine who was dishonorably discharged.
  8. I got my new motherboard today, as well as a retail version of Vista, as I was informed that the OEM Vista would not work with the new motherboard.

My question is rather simple (sorry for the n00bness, I've never had to do this before).....which do I install first? The new motherboard or the retail Vista?

    Thanks in advance.
  9. Okay, so I have my choices narrowed down to Doomlord's suggestion and your 3rd recommendation.

I will have to either borrow (or most likely purchase) a version of Windows Vista (I'd go back to XP if I could find it) because as said earlier, my PC came with it, and as said it the other thread, trying to use a new motherboard on that would be......problematic.

Guess I needed a small break from the game anyway....lol.

So I'll be back in a few, quite possibly posting asking how to install Windows from a disc. It'll be my first time ever doing it.
  10. This is somewhat of a sequel to my thread pertaining to my motherboard being unable to detect my video cards.....lol. I contemplated just getting a new computer at the end of that thread, but I had second thoughts.....

So pretty much, I'm just gonna look for a new motherboard. I'm not looking to buy a new processor for it at the moment, so can anyone recommend a motherboard that can use the processor I have already? (I have an AMD Athlon (tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 3800+ 2.00 GHz)

I browsed other forums for an answer, but wow, even the simplest questions on most of them can turn into flame wars.

(I am aware that I will have to reinstall my OS as the one on my computer now came pre-installed.)
  11. Ugh.

Well thanks for the help anyway.......if I'm gonna spend any more money, it might as well be in a brand new machine.....we were planning on getting one in August or September anyway.
  12. Well luckily I haven't bought the new motherboard yet......glad to have read your post.

Yes, that is my PC, and yes, it came with Vista.

Now if I read your post right......only an HP motherboard will work? Does it have to be the same model, or will any HP motherboard do?
  13. New motherboard it is then.

EDIT: Okay, last question for now, I promise to stop after this......lol

Could anyone recommend a motherboard for me to purchase that is compatible with my listed above processor? (Wife only allowing purchase of new motherboard only........ )
  14. Well, the final verdict is this: My motherboard is unable to detect that a video card is in the PCI-E slot. Then again, we already know that from above posts.....lol

I don't want to have to resort to sub-par onboard graphics, so I'm stuck on either getting a new motherboard or just going all the way and getting a new computer.
  15. Another question that I need to ask......could it be that my motherboard's chipset driver got corrupted somehow? How would I go about finding a new driver?
  16. The verdict......

It seems that all of my video cards are dead. I gave the 9600 to the person looking at it......it would not work in my PC or his. He pops in another card in my PC and gets a good signal. So it's not the motherboard going bad. (I hope)

Looks like it's time to get a new card.
  17. Took the above steps....and still no go.

My father in law knows a guy who is skilled in this area, so I have him looking at my PC as of now. As I said earlier, if its the motherboard going bad, I have no problem getting a new one. The wife took it much better than II thought she would....lol

"You can only get a new motherboard if it is unable to be fixed."

Posting this from the PS3 in the living room. lol

After the troubleshooting listed above, it seems that the problem is the PCI-E slot.

Oh well......I tried what I knew. Thanks all for the help anyway.

Now before I attempt to undertake the dangerous task of attempting to convince the wife to make yet another computer related purchase, is is possible to get a bad PCI-E slot repaired, or should I just man up and ask if we can get a new motherboard?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Go into the BIOS and check to see if there is a setting for the Default video or to enable/disable the PCI-E slot. It may even be that you need to Disable the onboard video in order for the PCI-E slot to function correctly. Yeah, it shouldn't be this way but I've seen some really oddball settings in BIOS's for various computers that made me wonder what the heck the manufacturer was thinking.

Also, it's possible that there may be a jumper on the motherboard to enable/disable the PCI-E slot or set the default video to use the PCI-E instead of onboard.
    Just thought.

    [/ QUOTE ]
Someone else recommended that I try that, so I did. The option to enable/disable the PCI-E slot was there, so I gave it a go. No dice.
But true......it's quite possible that all this is stemming from a corrupt BIOS. I'll look for the jumper and see what that does for me.

    2. You seem to indicate that when powering on, even the startup screen doesn't show (bios version, RAM check, etc). Is that correct?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Correct. It is as if the monitor is not connected to the card at all.

    3. Did anything change on your computer just before this problem? Such as new driver/hardware installs, driver/hardware updates, Windows Updates, virus/malware scan, hard computer shutdown (due to power failure or etc), or anything else you can think of?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Before shutting the computer off for the night, I installed iTunes. No other updates.
  21. Update: Managed to borrow a cord from a neighbor. The computer is unable to detect any of the cards now.

    This really sucks.
