  1. a quick comment on concerns about blasters being "too survivable":

if pretty much anyone can tear through pretty much anything in the game from 1-50 playing a scrapper or brute (and to greater or lesser extents stalkers, tanks & some controllers & corrupters), I'm not seeing the "unbalancing" aspect of blasters being able to do the same thing.

I guess I'm not seeing the "balance" advantages of an AT that spends most of its time being mezzed or running back from the hosptial.

    Pretty neat idea.

yep, that's why I appended my differing opinion to yours.

    Pretty clever of me, eh?

I enjoyed my ice/ice dom back when CoV first launched, doms objectively stunk & ice/ice in particular was pretty crummy- dps stunk, Jack Frost's lame AI made him just this side of worthless, etc etc.

But I liked the character and got her to the mid 40's before inventions and successive waves of dominator buffs made them "good".

That didn't stop the collective 'everyone' from turning up their noses at the whole AT until it was "fixed".

The point being, some players will enjoy anything.
That doesn't mean it's fine, it just means some people either don't mind being gimped or have figured out ways around it.

I like blasters as a concept, but playing them is a different matter. I've deleted more blasters than probably any other AT. I do have two 50s- one of them I enjoyed getting there (fire/ice), the other, my AR/Dev, I dragged there bodily as an experiment to see if dumping billions of inf into an IO uber-build would make him worth playing again (it did, although just barely).

It's not coincidence that both secondaries largely ameliorate blaster's mez hole. Ice in particular is very controller-y, dev has the excellent Caltrops plus the aggro-drawing Gun Drone (which isn't much use these days, as it just charges into HTH and gets obliterated).

The game is easy enough that anyone can get anything to 50 without a terrific struggle. Whether the journey is fun or not is another thing, and that should be the design goal.

"This free thing isn't the cool thing I want it to be" is a pretty lame complaint.

Don't like it, don't claim it.

He likes to look at things, so fly/hover is great esp. in CoV with all the gargoyles on buildings and whatnot- he just heads over and stares at 'em for a while.
  9. a few more:

Running Hammond's arc, which is quite fun and about which more later.

inside the bank, we get to the vault.
"Let's smash it and make a LOUD NOISE so guys come and we fight them!"

when the door is at half health & goes BOOM he says

    "SEE! I TOLD YOU!"

We crush the door and gremlins come,

"LOOK dada! More ghosties! I think those ghosties are made out of ELECTRICITY!"

After we finished he wanted to go back to the cave we'd cleared out last night- my efforts to explain the whole idea of "missions" and how you can't go back to one you've finished didn't go over very well.

While flying around (flight is by FAR his favorite power in the game) we ended up outside the university in Cap. Something made him super excited.

    "WAIT! DADA, LOOK! OVER THERE!"

    "What? what is it?"

He pointed Night Bee at the thing in the middle of the square.

"LOOK! That sculpture looks like PAC MAN!"

And waddaya know, it kinda does!

and, a direct message from my son:

  10. Running a CoT mission a ton of ghosts with Night Bee with son on lap.
I'll turn the commentary over to him.

"I didn't know we were BLAPPING! Let's go blap that guy!"
For some reason he called Short Circuit "blap".
No, he's never heard me talk about blappers or blapping.
    I was taken aback.

"Let's die him so he never gets alive again!"

On seeing his first Spectral Demon Lord:
"I saw a weird FLAPPY guy flapping in there!"

On the efficacy of the Acid Mortar:
"I guess our shooter is the blapper....it pounces him in the bup!"

"dada, I think that flappy guy was a GHOST."

"Let's go see if those guys are still hanging out and being MAD."

"See, I was right, he was just a piece of cake! That was a JOKE I was talking about!""

    on the web grenade:
"throw some more GOOP at him, please!"

    upon a defeat:
"uh...we need to go to the HOST-UH-BUL."

after cleaning out a spawn of mages and archers:
"now they're just a peice of JUNK!"
  11. Lots of random ones over the years, but the first comic I actively collected was Howard the Duck circa 1976 or so. I figured out what day the local convenience store got their magazine/comic shipment & haunted the racks so I wouldn't miss it.

I dug it mainly for the goofy surreal stuff & could never figure out why my mom was also a fan until I re-read the series as an adult a few years back...'Dr. Bong', indeed.

In the game you really only spend time in the non-instance for short periods between missions. Zones can look empty when there are a bunch of people doing missions in it. So they aren't really in the zone.

This question is tricksy because it combines to different ideas.

Do you want to spend more time in the non-instanced streets of Paragon (or the Rogue Isles)?
and do you want to spend more time in outdoor but instanced maps?
The zones are horribly underutilized and I'm a reliable advocate for *anything* that gets people out of instances into public spaces.

Mission maps I could care less about- if it's story-appropriate to have an outdoor map, cool, but it wasn't a big deal when they added them to the game. I said "hey, cool", started cracking heads and that was about it. They can be thematically neat from a storytelling perspective, but it's still an instance.

I'd like any kind of "outdoor missions" beyond generic Kill X & Go Talk to This Person/Visit This Location stuff.

I want more City of HEROES, less City of Instances.
  14. Mayhem Missions are super fun, hit up your contact and run one!

then they'll give you somebody else to talk to.
  15. step one: find a good shop in your area.

step two: give the counter-nerd some input on what kind of thing you like and solicit suggestions.

step three: check 'em out, buy the stuff that appeals to you, go from there.
  16. More of not much going on.

Running SilverRage through the second half of the Twinshot arc, if I get a chance tonight I'm going to burn one of my XP Boosters and see if he can hit 20.

I haven't been able to take much part in the Nemesis invasion, but my son LOVES it. Hanging out by the arena in Port Oakes with Scab Factory guys started appearing out of the blue and the drones were zapping them- he couldn't get enough of it. He's decided the Arachnos drones are called "octopus megatroids", and now every time he sees me log in he wants to go watch the "octopus megatroids ZAP guys!"

I tried getting away from the drones to fight some invaders, but as a lowbie I couldn't kill fast enough and they were threatening to overwhelm me so I hopped back to safety. In any case my son preferred watching them get disintegrated by the drones to fighting them hand to hand.

Hoping to get some extended playtime this evening.

Yes, because the internet is SO HARD TO USE.
It's simply IMPOSSIBLE to access an online thesaurus to come up with alternative words, or check out foreign language dictionaries!

And roughly 30% of the English language derives from French, so....

In any case, you don't have to like the name, it's mine.

We've established your preferred MO is to covet someone else's name and contrive a way to take it away from them rather than expend a bit of effort to come up with an alternative, so I'm comfortable disregarding your opinion of what constitutes a 'good' name.

    Quote:
I thought maybe when you said this you picked an english name, it was taken and you some how came up with an equally awesome name that was also in english!
I have at least 50 characters I play more or less regularly. Some got their names right off (Nethergoat, for example, or one suggested by my nephew, Bad Guy Controller), but many were the result of trial and error.

I have another Moon themed character, a villainous dominator based on a character from my Champions pen & paper campaign many years ago. In the campaign her name was Lunacy. That was taken. So I went for Lady Lunacy, which wasn't taken.

My fire/rad controller went through a gamut of names before I found the right one- Three Mile Isleman.

    etc etc.

I don't know what point you think you're making here and suspect you've lost the plot yourself.

But to sum up my position:

jacking names other players have already taken = bad

coming up with names other players haven't taken = good

However, I am curious to hear of original names you've come up with to replace the ones that were already taken when you tried to get them.
Last night I had made a character on Freedom to check out the new dark control set. Made the character female, came up with a costume I liked, a typical black/purplish number with a hood. Had in mind some sort of moon/lunar themed name and unsurprisingly my first few choices were taken.

Mulled it over a bit, and came up with Lunette, a word of French derivation meaning crescent or moon-shaped.

    Bingo, not taken.
It's a great name, I'm very happy with it and I didn't have to jack it from another player.

Also, your inability to understand what "original" means in the context of this thread is baffling.

Under the suggestion, he'd also have ample opportunity to maintain his names. CoH IS free to play after all. All he'd have to do is log into the game once in a while to keep himself off the longtime inactive list.
Or, they stick with the status quo and he doesn't have to worry about it.

A much better solution, involving zero developer effort.

I owned a comic and game store from 1994 to 2002. I knew it was probably going to be a good day whenever a well dressed, new customer in his mid 20's walked in the door. Often it would turn out that they had last read comics 4-8 years earlier right before they went off to college and between the lack of time due to studying & socializing and the cost of college leaving them a total of $2.42 cents a month for their hobbies they had cut out there comic habit.

But having graduated and landing that $50,000+ a year job these customers returned to their roots with thousands of dollars a month to spend. They would open up a saver for the 30+ titles that they had always wanted and would buy every back issue for the past 4-8 years that I had in stock. There were several times when the total would hit in the thousands of dollars.

I was around long enough to see the same thing happen with teens who had played Magic the Gathering. They started returning in 1999 and would invariably want those cards they could never get as teenagers. I could count on any Lotus, Mox, or other Power of 9 card to sell quickly on those days for $200-$1000+.

CoH has been around long enough to see this same scenario. Kids who played between 2004-2008 are now graduating college and with the ability for old players to catch up and buy all those veteran powers the Devs have the potential for some fantastic sales. I would not be at all surprised if a good percentage of the the current market success is specifically from players, 22-26 years of age who have been absent for 4+ years. If this is the case then every year a new batch of college graduates will enter the work force and return to Paragon City after a 4 year absence.

That is they will return as long as their favorite characters that they have fond memories of haven't had their name taken away.

As a side note one of those customers is still a friend and played CoH from 2004 until he married and had a son in 2009. I expect him to return with his son sometime around 2015-2017 when his son is old enough to start playing, assuming the Devs don't take any actions to alienate him.

    Well put.

I'm not sure if the pro-name theft cadre in this thread has never worked a day of retail in their lives, or just has zero understanding of human psychology beyond MINE! GIMME! I TAKE!, but the disconnect between reality and their perception of things is river deep, mountain high.
