I'm not sure you read those two posts.
[/ QUOTE ]
I read one that extolled the virtues of non-instanced content and a reply that complained about waiting in line for l337 gear drops, and then noted that isn't how this game works.
Is that what happened, or did I miss something. -
[ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
Actually I say too much instancing is City of Heroes/Villains weakness.
[/ QUOTE ]
On behalf of all players who don't have the time to line up and wait to fight the big bad that might drop the item you need to complete a quest or might drop a powerful item you need to enhance your character: no.
[/ QUOTE ]
except that's not how the game works.
way to get worked up over nothing, though. -

And that the 5th are coming back as space zombies. From the Moon.

That would rule from a giant throne of gilded skulls atop a mountain of dead foemen. -

Wow, dude. Hateful maybe?
[/ QUOTE ]
what's hateful about taking out the trash?
There's nothing constructive or useful about serial necroing long resolved threads, and whoever's doing it should be dumped, or at the very least suspended for a good while. -
[ QUOTE ]
Yes, on the surface it looks like a good thing, but the actual effect of it from now until the day it actually happens is that the established sg's will start to grab players that might otherwise join growing supergroups, thereby squeezing out struggling sg's during a critical period in their growth.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't see this changing the recruitment dynamic at all.
From the POV of the recruit if they want to join a big SG with a pimped out base, that's what they're gonna do, 20k or no 20k.
[ QUOTE ]
After it happens, I predict a lot of the 'placeholder' characters will be kicked from their groups, leaving them angry and (rightfully) feeling used. That will make them leery of joining another supergroup.
[/ QUOTE ]
nonsense.
there is ZERO motivation to kick anyone since you get 20k per member regardless. -

The thing that has excited me most about this whole deal is that I can only see great things coming for all of you guys as the players of this game. And to me, that's what this is deal is all about. Making the game awesome for as many of you as we can. That was ultimately the biggest factor in my decision to leave Cryptic and join NCSoft. All of those things that we've had to push back or write off as taking too many resources to get done in the limited time frames and limited manpower. All of the bugs or QoL issues that have been lingering for what seems like forever because the programmers were too busy fixing the major bugs. All of those really big pie in the sky ideas that we've dreamed about for so long and couldn't do because there was no one who could implement them...that's all back on the table. The sky is literally the limit. It's been really tough having to make decisions on what would be the 'best bang for the buck' and I'm really looking forward to having the recourses so that won't be such a deciding factor moving forward.

Quite possibly the greatest post in the history of this forum. -

I stand by my statements.
[/ QUOTE ]
Great Sam, but that doesn't make them any more accurate or relevant.
You persistently advocate positions based on your quirky view of the perfect game, which is fine.
But just once try entertaining the thought that the large number of people who disagree with your notions have a point with regards to what the larger population of games enjoy/are interested in.
You have a lot in common with PP.
Both of you have very specific notions of gameplay that are wildly at odds with what most people like/want, and both of you respond to alternative points of view with the same brand of obtuse incomprehension. -

"Bad design shortcuts" was creating a grand total of 6 zones (Mercy, Oaks, Cap, Sharkhead, Nerva, St. Martial, +1 if you count I7) and cramming those full of important stuff, making the gameworld as a whole feel incredibly small. Why make two zones 2/3s of the size when you could cram everything into one? Except then players always see the same places. How many people actually LIKE spending time in Sharkhead Island?
"Bad design shortcuts" was keeping everyone contained within the same zone for 10 levels a stretch where City of Heroes mixes things up a bit.
"Bad design shortcuts" was adding in twice the story arcs but each a third of the length and each throwing out interesting information only as an afterthought (Oh, before I forget, the Rikti are humans. You learn something new every day!). Good storytelling and good stories replaced by short arcs just so there are more of them, no single one-off missions in addition to that, no hunt missions for those who like them...
[/ QUOTE ]
Sam, your 'bad design shortcut' is my 'huge gameplay improvement'.
All the stuff you complain about there was developed in response to vocal and ongoing input from the playerbase. -

the Rogue Isles may have had a smaller physical footprint than Paragon City at launch, but as far as content goes Mayhem Missions alone provided more original, interactive gamplay than the entirety of CoH did at launch.
[/ QUOTE ]
Nitpick - Mayhem missions were not in at launch.
[/ QUOTE ]
Good point, I'd forgotten that. =D
But CoV benefited greatly from the devs experience with CoH and had a bunch of great stuff at launch, stuff it took them a looooong time to get in CoH.
In CoH there were entire level ranges where you COULD NOT GET A MISSION. Not even 'kill XXXX', nothing! You either had to street sweep or team with people who still had working contacts.
Claiming CoH at launch was some cornucopia of content is profoundly uninformed. -
[ QUOTE ]
I'm not saying CoV did less than other MMOs have with their expansions and obvious I felt it was good enough to buy it. But it was billed as a standalone game which shipped with not a third of the content the original CoH had at Launch...
[/ QUOTE ]
ARE YOU HIGH?!?!
CoH at launch had street sweeping and fighting guys in warehouses, and that was IT.
Ok that's a slight exaggeration...but VERY slight.
the Rogue Isles may have had a smaller physical footprint than Paragon City at launch, but as far as content goes Mayhem Missions alone provided more original, interactive gamplay than the entirety of CoH did at launch.
Sam, I love ya, but you need to stop making sweeping statements about stuff you have zero understanding of. -

Statesman has been involved with MUO since that deal was signed, he has had a great influence on COH/COV and the development decisions in the past but currently and moving forward those decisions have rested on the shoulders of Matt 'Positron' Miller.
[/ QUOTE ]
CoH robbed MUO blind on this deal.
It's no coincidence that the current run of SUSTAINED AWESOME has come on Positron's watch. -
[ QUOTE ]
So for the people that bought CoH and CoV what do we get.
[/ QUOTE ]
Lots and lots of play time, plus a likely boost in villain population thanks to new players checking it out. -

20,000 Prestige
Also after the launch of Issue 11, all Supergroups will receive an additional 20,000 Prestige per Supergroup member, meaning SGs could acquire up to 3 million Prestige based upon their Supergroup membership roster! Actual date will be announced shortly.

Were looking beyond the normal slate of free Issues for City of Heroes. We want to use City of Heroes as a focal point and really build on this franchise. We absolutely value the City of Heroes IP with its unique focus on the superhero genre, were really thrilled at the opportunities that full ownership brings to the table, and we cant wait for the City of community to see all that we have in store for them.

Ummmm . . . so what? I've been playing CoH since Beta and I don't always take the Fitness pool. Honestly, for one, it IS overrated in a lot of instances. For two, I can Endurance Reduction I/O, even at level 12 with level 15s, and work just fine. even on my own claws/dark scrapper.
This does not equal to an "Ebay Account".
[/ QUOTE ]
Out of alot of characters most of mine don't take or need fitness. That even applies to my mid 20's broadsword scrapper. I was surprised, I had expected to need to /respec him at 20 with a freespec to add it but I honestly haven't needed fitness once I started slotting SO's and now IO's.
So lack of the fitness pool doesn't indicate anything about the skill or lack of skill of a particular player.
[/ QUOTE ]
Especially in the post-inventions world, where numerous low-cost IO's deliver +recovery as their first set bonus. -
quick impressions after one evening of play:
lots of fun.
more drops = more interesting gameplay, and adding super fun ones like the temp costume powers is genius.
I was teaming with a friend who hadn't played since the early days and he asked "when did they start doing *cool* stuff?"
We ran around, did some missions, rang some doorbells, got some goodies and had a great time.
The only down side was occasional crippling lag in Steel Canyon, I assume because so many people were going door to door instead of doing instanced missions.
Overall, I give it an A+. -

I never "claimed" anything. I merely stated my understanding of the situation. I'm not doubting anyone, I just want to see an official source that says what you guys are saying. That's not mistrust, that's simple logic.

CoH Press Release from 2001:
[ QUOTE ]
Cryptic Studios proudly announces City of Heroes, a massively multiplayer online roleplaying game that's home to an entire universe of super powered, comic book style adventure. Here you and thousands of other players can create your own superheroes and discover all the dangers, wonders, and excitement that Paragon City has to offer.
[/ QUOTE ]
[ QUOTE ]
"With City of Heroes we're bringing a new and exciting genre to online gaming: the world of superheroes," says lead designer Richard Dakan. "We've designed this game to not only capture the excitement of comic book heroes but to offer a unique gaming experience. With this game you can literally 'become your own hero.' Players can not only design their very own superheroes from the ground up, but they can have a direct impact on what happens to the city they live in."
[/ QUOTE ]
The focus of the game is crystal clear, and has been from day one. -
[ QUOTE ]
I think it's more simply just a complaint that dual blades are a continued sign of a mish-mash direction in the game and is inspiring some voiced objections. Some folks don't like the implications.
[/ QUOTE ]
This was my original feeling, but it went away once I found out they were adding weapon customization.
two dorky looking long swords?
lame fantasy twaddle.
Two player-choosable weapons?
neato mosquito.
And Sam, it's totally crazy to claim this game was concieved and promoted as anything but an homage to four color comics in the Western tradition. It's clear they don't want to alienate fans of other genres, but the game was never promoted as a nebulous 'choose your own adventure' GURPS system. It's always been marketed as a SUPERHERO game. -

Because you know, despite the doomsaying about alting dying, I have this strange desire to make a mace tanker and an AR blaster. Something I can say unequivocally I had no desire to before.

I rolled up an axe tank this very evening (and won him a million in a costume contest fresh out of the tutorial- maybe I am just naturally lucky!).
but take my word for it- stay away from AR.
if you ignore this voice of experience, for the love of sanity at least take something besides /dev for your secondary.

Nobody* replays the game for the content, they replay the game to play new characters.
The new powersets in this issue represent a big *increase* in replayability.
*'nobody' in this case being a statistically insignificant number of RP wackos & other kooks. -
