So what do they do? Quit? Make another character and hopfully play thru the content and LEARN how to really play THIS game.
[/ QUOTE ]
It doesn't take long to LEARN how to really play THIS game.
Where do people get the idea that this game is some kind of byzantine cipher requiring years of careful study to unravel?
it's a very basic, casual friendly game that even a thawed-out caveman could learn to play in an afternoon. It's added some complexity over the years, but none of that stuff is necessary to succeed. -

(I don't have either the patience or the memory skills to sit in the market and evaluate each recipe individually to see if I would be better off selling the recipe or buying salvage, crafting then selling the enhancement. I'm just looking for some kinda rule in general....)
[/ QUOTE ]
In general, I sell recipes and don't bother with crafting.
I make enough inf flipping stuff that the lure of a few million extra for crafting something isn't worth it.
Also, it's easy to pull and delete a recipe if you mis-judge the market- you have nothing invested but the listing fee.
You can definitely make a bushel of cash crafting IO drops for sale, but it's not something I'd do without researching the market first. -

In the case of music, my object fetishism has been (mostly) satisfied by the resurgence of vinyl.
[/ QUOTE ]
I've spent the past few years fighting the urge to start buying LPs again because I know I'll go crazy binge-buying.
[/ QUOTE ]
I've tamed my own demons with an ironclad rule-
no buying anything I've previously owned (in any format).
a lot of the smarter labels give you a CD (or a code for a lossless download) along with the album- a nice touch. -
[ QUOTE ]
I still prefer boxed copies myself.
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm a big collector of various things and a huge fan of having a tangible object, but game packaging doesn't do anything for me.
It's like CDs- not very satisfying as objects, and basically useless once you extract their digital goodness to a lossless file.
In the case of music, my object fetishism has been (mostly) satisfied by the resurgence of vinyl.
Unfortunately games have no older, more appealing physical object to fall back on. -

ED was ultimately a good change, most for the reasons TonyV outlined above. I think, far more than what ED actually was, it was the way ED was introduced that really rankled and still incites strong emotions in some people today.
[/ QUOTE ]
This needs emphasizing. I'm sure several of the long-time folks here remember the progression:
GDN.
"We're done making massive changes to powers.
ED:
"But we didn't change powers. We changed how they're enhanced."
Technically, he was right. But it felt very... I don't know, bait-and-switch of him, or.. I odn't know, politician-y. And that ticked off a lot of folks and really tarnished his reputation.
[/ QUOTE ]
Oh c'mon, the dude was just a straight-up liar.
I mean you can lipstick up that pig if you want, but it doesn't really help. =P -
[ QUOTE ]
On the flip side, I still see people sometimes who claim that X character was "retired due to ED" or is now "unplayable due to ED", which is hogwash.
[/ QUOTE ]
I have a character who 'retired' after ED, my AR/Dev blaster.
The combination was great fun with six-slotting, was a boring mess without it.
That boredom, a direct result of ED, destroyed my motivation to play him.
You can drag anything to 50, true, but that doesn't mean they're "playable". -
ED was a giant crap sammich.
I'm glad you enjoyed your mouthful, but I was inspired to cancel.
If they'd had IOs ready to go it would have been fine, but they didn't so it wasn't. -

it's hilarious that some people give a care what some forum title says.
[/ QUOTE ]
It says "City of Heroes official forums."
Do the others matter?
[/ QUOTE ]
Well, I certainly don't pay attention to them. -
[ QUOTE ]
You know what they should do?
They should remove ALL changes to the game that JACK thunk was a gud idear.
[/ QUOTE ]
they've done a pretty good job of repudiating the "design vision" from my seat here in the bleachers.
also, he must have had a few ok idears mixed in somewhere.
I don't remember any, but surely they exist? -

Worst.Thread.Ever.
Not a single redeeming thing in it.

Getting caught in a stealth-edit where he called a little kid a retard?
Telling Bill he "doesn't contribute" to the CoH community?
BI defending the most indefensible person since Jeffery Dahmer?
C'mon, this thread is a fountain of hilarity! -

Totally!
no tights though, they get caught on my fur. -

Once again, what have you contributed to this thread?

Information you were ignorant of, r/e the denizens of your burgeoning ignore list.

Shoo fly 'fore im forced to swat you.

Given the outcome of your other efforts in this thread I'll bet money you'd not only miss me, but somehow manage to gravely injure yourself during the attempt.
Your facility with language is such that it's too bad you ignore the very good advice in your sig- pvp moar, say less. -

The recent Nielsen study seems to indicate something similar; that a lot of people play games that are, well, outside the retail-in-a-box model.
[/ QUOTE ]
I don't remember the last time I bought a game from a store.
Half Life?
I think it was Half Life. -

[ QUOTE ]
Well, for a 50 you'd be lucky to get one of the "coveted" recipes for 65mil.
[/ QUOTE ]
so what?
you can get a lot of really good stuff for 65 million, which is a heck of a lot more than "nothing".
it's amazing what becomes possible when you give up knee-jerk negativity and look around a bit. -
[ QUOTE ]
Again. Baseless Accusations and pointless negativity from Nethergoat. How shocking.
-Rachel-
[/ QUOTE ]
I'm not sure how quoting yourself mounting the soapbox and dictating how other people should play the game disproves my thesis, but whatever.
And I'm realistic, not negative.
When people argue from logically deficient positions, I call them on it whether they be dev, player or some as yet undiscovered third race.

...you say as you accuse them of being a mindless conformist and only following rules for the sake of following rules.
[/ QUOTE ]
After engaging in a multi-page debate in another thread, I am perhaps overqualified to venture an informed opinion on the subject. -
[ QUOTE ]
All that sounds all gravy, but 65mil isn't really much enough to do anything with.
[/ QUOTE ]
it's enough to frankenslot a couple of characters, or kit one out with a bunch of pretty good set IOs, or slot a couple of powers with *really* good set IOs.
You have a pretty expansive definition of 'nothing'. -

Is there no middleground anymore?
[/ QUOTE ]
there's plenty of middle ground, although none of it resides under the feet of the person I was addressing. -
[ QUOTE ]
Don't be Sheep, people! Follow the true way of bad haircuts, black clothing, and acidic humor!
[/ QUOTE ]
that sounds infinitely more entertaining than your brand of conformity, preaching the "right" way to play from your soapbox and mindlessly following Daddy's rules because, uh, well, he's DADDY. -
[ QUOTE ]
Do you know what Fulcrum Shift is? Sure, most of us do. Do you know its recharge? AoE radius? Is it auto-hit? What's the boost per enemy? What's the +DAM cap for your AT? How many little FS dots cap you? How meaningful is that for your character? How much is FS worth for you at the beginning of a fight? At the end?
[/ QUOTE ]
none of that really matters to a player, unless they're really into numbers.
I've been here five years, I've got a mind/kin controller who was 'born' the first month of the game's existance, and I don't know the answer to those questions.
And it doesn't matter, because the power still works great and the character is still effective.
How did I learn how to use it?
I read the description and fired it off a couple of times.
Oh, SO COMPLICATED!
The game is designed to be player friendly and let people be effective out of the starting gate. There are very few things in it that can't be dialed in with a few minutes of experimentation.
