reason why you dont hear bout it often is (i think) cause of the fact traps are very situational. You need to have time to place a shield gen (which doesnt take long) or a poison trap, mortar, etc. This leaves you rooted and very open to attack. Also if the enemy pays ANY attention, traps are easily avoided. On the other hand you got the sets that offer direct targets for either buff or debuff.

had a few on my kinetic:
"Can you heal"
"Yes i can" (why would i be lying if i got transfusion?)
Join the team only to act as the offender (as i usually do)
Havent fired a single transfusion, then get a message in team chat:
"Nice healing!"
"I didn't heal a thing"
"OMG! Why u not healin?!?!?!?!?!?!"
"You only asked if I could, I never said I was actually gonna heal"
Of course the classic, asking a kin to rez:
"Rez me!"
"Love to.."
"REZ ME!"
"Like I said, I'd love to"
"FFS! y u not rezzing me?!"
"Would love to...
...if you explained to me HOW"
Then one in a team I was in quite a while ago, doing hollows mishes. Team setup: 4 blasters, scrapper (me) and a bubbler. Leader, genious as he is, explains the plan:
him: "Scrapper go in first, then we all blast and healer keeps us alive!"
me: "uhm... yeah... about that... we havent got a healer yknow" (ps, I normally prefer not to use the term healer, but these ppl tend not to know other terms like "buffer" or "defender")
"yes we do"
"ehhh... no we dont"
"what r u? u n00b?" *points at bubbler*
(riiiight... think i'll hang back for this battle)
after battle, blasters die, me n the bubbler survive, bubbler green, me almost dead
"ffs! y u not heal?!"
"I told you, he's a bubbler, not a healer"
*kicks the bubbler from team*
Left shortly after, teamed with the bubbler and we kicked some troll booty -
its mainly an issue of how a MM can use his secondaries to determine if he'll ever be any good in PvP. Sure, some builds are better than others and sure, some ppl are better in pvp than others. However, if a MM knows how to use his secondaries, he can be a deadly opponent.
I sometimes go to sirens with my robo/poi MM. Sure, I die a fair few times, and I dont claim to be one of the best pvpers out there. However I often manage to nail my fair share of heroes while im there. Make good use of your secondary power's buffs and debuffs, and you can keep yourself a bit safe from danger while your pets start to pummel your foe.
As said before, the reason why MMs get pummeled on sight are not cause they are the most worthless. It's because people know if you ignore the MM, his pets can give you a "go-to-hospital-free-card". The MM itself is the weakest link in his whole pet army, if the MM falls, the pets fall, thats why they are aimed for first. -
dunno what lvl you got to yet, but if you got neurotoxic breath, its a great helper. Also, burst and iirc the drone single blast got a knockback. What I often did before i got assault bot or single target hold: unleash havoc on the vault door first, then watch dialogues that warn for an incoming ambush.
Quit attacking the door, and get ready to defend yourself. Once you see the mob of guards rushing in, immediately send all your pets on 1 target at a time. Once your pets start running, run ahead of em and use neurotoxic breath on the guards. Some will stand and choke for a while, some will miss, but most will be slowed. At that point, run back while your pets keep pummeling the guards.
Let your pets (and your own attacks/debuffs) focus on the ones you missed with breath first. The ones you have hit will be a while till they reach you anyway. After that, just keep debuffing and shooting the rest.
Of course, use pillars and walls as cover so they have to travel even farther to reach you.
Hope this helps a bit. However indeed it is very annoying when ambushes aim for the MM and no way you can get it away from you. However these ambushes come on the nr 3 spot of annoying MM cases in my list. On nr 2 are those damn door ambushes (you know, you enter a mish and you immediately get ambushed before you get a chance to summon your henchies). Yet the most annoying has to be that AV/EB that keeps aiming for you ignoring your henchies... almost no way you can survive that without running around in circles hopefully staying out of his/her reach -

you dont want the blast just cause you dont like blasting, or..?
anyway, for high damage, go fire, fireball + containment + kin's dmg boosts = extreme damage.
If you dont like blasting, i'd go for psi as you'll have a nice mez-protection and quite good psi-protection (which comes in handy at higher lvls fighting e.g. carnies, psychic clocks)
Havent ever seen stone or ice mastery in action though, so can't comment on that -
grav/kin is a decent all-round build.. however if you go fire/kin you'll have some really silly damage output. So if you want to be that high-dmg controller, fire/kin will be the type for you.
For pure control I tend to lean on grav and earth really. Kin wont be that great with stone compared to for instance storm.
If you want to go fire and like kin, I'd go for fire/kin, if you want to go earth, I suggest you also take a look at the other secondaries, especially rad and storm. -

anyway, bout ATs lacking, we can never have too many trollers and kins/rads, however we can of course always use EVERY 45+ hero out there -

personally i thought earth embrace was different from the other +maxhp powers cause it doesnt have a heal element (which powers like hoarfrost do have)
however, your health % on your hp bar stays the same, so if you had 75% health and activate earth's embrace, it will only heal the offset to 75%.
At least, that's how i always looked at it, but im not sure. -
must say i love my robo/poison MM, robo is just insane damage and from poison you get a nice single-target heal, clear mez, debuffs, single target hold, cone slow (which is a great combo with assault bot's incendiary rockets) and if you team alot you can even get a decent rez. Till now I have been able to solo every AV i met (before the AV->EB change) so cant say im complaining
only prob though is that its quite heavy on the blue stuff if you are an active MM like me. With active i mean a MM who DOESNT just send his pets at an enemy and stand in the back, tossing an occasional heal or buff his pets way. Also i found out that hasten is kinda a need to have as well.
However, being the "best" char is really a matter of taste and what you want to do (team/solo? damage/support? etc) -

One thing to remember, most of those repel and KB powers (especially Force Bubble) will make the least defender member of the team the biggest target. That would be you by the way

just the fact if you activate PFF with forcebubble on, you cancel the effect of forcebubble(after all, with PFF you are only allowed to use powers that affect you and not others

And yeah, use forcebubble sparingly, as every enemy affected by it will just get a knockback hit from you, therefore you are aggroing it unless somebody else taunts it. You dont want to die by aggro-overdose now, do you? Other reason is the huge AoE which will make accidental aggro almost inevitable.
