    While yes they are "defensive" powers and yes they do stack slotted with lvl 30 std def IOs (this takes you to the ED cap) they combined still only offer roughly 6% def, that by no means = good IMO. 20-30% is "good", Capped is great, 6% is nothing especially when unslotted they offer roughly 4%. A 2% increase from slotting a power is IMO a horrible waste of slots. The way defense works in this game going from 0-6% def is nothing were as going from 39% to 45% def takes you from damn near unhittable to damn near unkillable.
  4. A Fire/MM won't be able to Mass Mezz, and effectively double their damage capped AoE Damage. Just a quick example from my build (a very short example but here goes). Using Mid's numbers and both slotted with a level 30 Posi Blast set, My Fire/MM's Fireball does 310 dmg w/ BU and AIM (assuming all ticks) and he has a 32% global dmg buff, Mid's shows that with a full FS a controllers fireball does 347 dmg. Now I'm not sure if Mid's automatically figures that dmg number with containment or not, so if it's including containment it's higher, if thats not w/ containment then its 694 dmg on mobs that aren't fighting back. And thats not even figuring in Firecages, hot feat and Imps. So as much as I'd like that a Fire/MM or any blaster really could do it, they can't. They lack the safety and self buffing to be able to do it.

    /mm help

    This is my build, not sure if it would actually help you seeing as how your a hover blaster and I'm an in your face AoE monster. (I still don't have any melee attacks, but Drain Psyche, PSW and Fireball are my opening salvo, while I close with Psyscream and jump back into melee for another PSW and Fireball). This final build was built for high level teaming in mind. FWIW World of Confusion is good to slot the purple confuse set (not sure if it's still as cheap as it was, note that the Purple immobe set was also cheap when I bought it, but might also be expensive now). I will say that w/SS and celerity I will run into spawns and they will get confused and deal miniscule amounts of dmg to each other, but when they get confused I'll hit DP and then begin my attack. It gets me a 1-2 second window to start my attack agro free. I could also see giving it 1-2 Acc/End IOs and then proc'ing it out, that might put out some decent dmg, but I've never tried it.

    Oh yeah, I slotted for Global Dmg (to far exceed the ED cap on my AoE's and +Rech, Drain Psyche is damn near perma. I wasn't looking at self safety too much since this was built to be THE AoE dmg dealer for lvl 50 stuff (ITF/STF and to accompany on SG farms.)

  7. I'm using it for 3 LoTG (def/end, def/end/rech, and the unique) for the set bonuses, it's also my lvl 50 power and I don't have anyplace else to put those last two spots.

    And to the OP, I played a Elm/SD to lvl 5 myself and had to stop, It already ruined playing on live for me atm. I've never wanted to play a character more then I do my Elm/Shield Scrapper.

    I'd recommend keeping Power Push since you can use it to keep harder targets on their back, but drop the snipe (so highly situational it takes up too much space in your tray at this low a level), lightning field (since you should effectively be moving in and out of combat to use melee attacks, this won't do more than a tick or two of dmg, plus it has a HUGE end cost), and lightning clap, (if you're in a situation that you need the mitigation, then energy torrent will probably be just as useful).

    Inv or Shield?

    I had a Inv/EM/Pyre tank that I made and level'd many moons ago, while he was very survivable he was VERY boring. About a few months ago I made a Shield/EM/Pyre and hot-dang, one of the funnest melee characters I've ever made. And to be fair, it doesn't take too much bank to reach the Def cap. It was a little easier with EM because I could mule some attacks with stun IO sets, but I've come up with a few Elm/SD Scrapper build's that won't be costing that much. So basically while the Invlun is overall more solid, the Shield is overall more fun.
  12. Also check what the difference in price is between the crafted IO and the recipes you have drop, sometimes you can make an extra few million infl for only spending a lil on salvage.

    Again that's why it's fun for me, standing there as a meat shield is just not fun (it's why I don't have taunt on my tank, I actively use gauntlet). Switching targets and attacking makes tanking so much fun for me, I can't just stand there spamming taunt with a attacks thrown in. I tanked the new 5th column tf the other night just because we couldn't find another tank, I got several personal tells telling me how great I did, when they found out that I didn't have taunt they were amazed that I held agro. During the final AV fight, I would pound on Reichsman, then hop to the next AV, Reichs'y would follow along like a puppy, it was hysterical.

I was on an ITF with my SG mates (we actually got to have a full team of 8 for the first time in a long time and it was amazing) I was on my Fire/MM, who essentially has perma DP (like 3 seconds off). I was following my friend on his Spine/Regen scrapper and after like 15 minutes I realized that we had cleared half of the first map by ourselves, our team was on the other side of the map. While I wasn't by myself we both were scrapperlock, when our team asked what we were doin' we both said simultaneously "Oops...Scrapperlocked" by far one of the funniest things my SG mates and I had done.

    It's only unfair to the tank if they care about "saving" the team, otherwise it's unfair to the team . I however love these situations and enjoy the challenge. It's the only reason I bring my tank into an AE farm. He's a Shield/EM/Pyre and taking all that agro to cap out AAO and see that damage is amazing. Actually having to pick out your targets and rotate what you're doing actually makes for a fun experience. When you see one or two break off fling a fireblast or fireball at whomever is now ignoring you and they run back.

    When I plan a build I usually go for the cheapest planning and then build up, so this is my starter kit, if you really want to save money you can use 4 serendipities in the def toggles and just have less hp, rege, and acc. I plan builds in 3 stages up to lvl 25 (with lvl 25 IOs usually cheap sets with decent bonues or frankenslotting, a lvl 37 build (lvl 40 sets) and a Final build that includes all the shinies, sometimes the final build looks alot like the lvl 40 build and sometimes it looks nothing like it. For reference here is my "lvl 25" build

  17. Here is a Elm/SD/Blaze that I've been fooling around with since I found out about getting blaze mastery. Obviously this is based on the brute Elm and the Tank Pyre master sets barring that nothing changes:
    Now while there are a few of the "shinies" in the build I'm not really sure how important they really would be to the build, I put them there because I plan on dumping alot of cash into my Elm/Shield to make it my "premier" scrapper. I'm also thinking about tossing a coula slots from stamina into Charged Brawl and Havoc Punch for the Sandman chance to heal self procs...we'll see, but neither of those would effect the def numbers which the build is capped to all positions.

  18. I have a Claws/Fire/Dark (@49) and he is amazing. He just has titanium coating in the two res. shields and he is awesome for regular PVE stuff, but if I wanted to make him an AV soloer I'd probably need to make more of an IO investment then I would like too. He is ALOT of fun and a little ball of slicing burning fury (Followup with the gaus. proc, slash with the achilles proc, and focus with the decimation proc make for a wonderfully good time.)     Sorry to chime in rather randomly, but I think this right here may shine some light on something.
    When we (the players) look at things that are given to us we look at them in the here and now, meanwhile the Devs have to look at them for the whole picture (the now and the future). Just because something functions this way now (in the grand scheme of things) doesn't mean that it will necessarily be the same later on.
    While Dom popularity may not increase a whole lot right now (seems like redside population is even lower then before), we may see a huge increase in Dom popularity once GR is out. I know I personally can't stand controller's not because I don't like control, I don't like buffing/debuffing, so a Dominator is the perfect AT for me to play, however I just can't get into playing redside, so for me a Hero Dom will be even more perfect for me. YMMV, but I think we need to see the whole thing revealed before we can make any hard judgements about the effect one way or another of success. (You can talk til you're blue in the face about the hard numbers of the changes to powers however).

    Which was a very one sided statement, while your points are very well articulated and well thought out without saying either side of the same coin is better.

    I merely wanted to point out that having both (the defense build and the "smoke and mirrors" build (as it was called)) really didn't impact me as much as how I played my blaster. Which you agree with, how you play your blaster has much greater of an impact then on a melee toon. Toggle up and go to town doesn't work on a blaster, for a multitude of reasons, lacking a significant amount of defensive toggles being the biggest.

    To the OP: Pick a blaster combo that looks like it may be something you think you will enjoy (powerset wise). Then after playing with it for a bit, look to see where you feel you are lacking and come back and check on what you can do to help yourself out.

    I have a Fire/MM (34% global dmg and 80% glogal rech (150 w/hasten)) and a Fire/EM (Ranged Def capped) I can honestly say that I like the way the Fire/MM plays better and they can both handle the same things. Maybe having near perma Drain Psyche skews my view, but I still find myself needing to use aidself on the Fire/EM from time to time while fighting high lvl things, meanwhile my Fire/MM just tears em up, so YMMV. Blaster durability is in the player more then the build.
