  1. Yup, resistance resists -damage debuffs. On the plus side, this also means that resistance debuffs *increase* the effectiveness of damage debuffs. So if you're a tank with bruising, or a teammate drops something like freezing rain on your target, the debuffs you're laying will be boosted.

I still want to try an ice/km/soul tank... the amount of -dam should be quite delicious, especially given the presence of bruising.
  2. /Nrg is fine. Quite good single target damage, good ranged and melee damage, good single target mitigation through knock and stuns, has powerboost. Nearly no AoE damage, however, which makes it good solo but not as much so on teams (though ST damage is still good, even there).

Grav/ is not fine. The problem is that grav has very little team-friendly control. Your three AoE control options (immob is not a control) are grav distortion field (low duration offset by power boost, but still way too long of recharge to use as a staple control), dimension shift (no, just... no), and wormhole (teleport effect often confusing to teammates, AoE knockback is often frowned upon, small radius makes it hard to actually control the big spawns you get on teams, and if you can't find something to hide behind you'll take an alpha from those big spawns). All of these have problems actually providing useful control on a team.

Solo you're in better shape. With smaller spawns and no teammates, wormhole becomes much easier to use, and with less chaos (and no teammates), you might even be able to find some useful way to use dimension shift. Your ST control with singy will be good, however you're still saddled with a pair of attacks that you don't need (propel sucks, and lift is redundant given the 4 good ranged attacks from your secondary), and your AoE control is still iffy. Keep spawn sizes down to play to your strengths in ST control and damage and you'll be able to solo fairly well, but your team contribution will still be anemic.

Honestly, for a dom who wants to spend at least some of their time on a team, I really would recommend something other than grav.
  3. When I marketeer, it's usually pretty casual stuff like crafting high level uncommons (i.e. doctored wounds) or crafting mid level commons (though I haven't been doing that much lately, too much work for the result). Low investment, modest profit type stuff. I'd guesstimate that if I ever kept it up for a full week at a time, at my usual pace (slow) I'd make 50-100 million or so, but I've never bothered doing so.

I tend to play lots of lowbies and mostly frankenslot instead of go for expensive builds, so my needs are pretty cheap (the most expensive items tend to be various procs, which are often bought with merits). Therefore, I only tend to marketeer when I feel I actually need money (usually when I've just gotten a new character into the 30-40 range where I start slotting stuff), and so my marketeering isn't just low investment, modest profit, it's also low energy, low effort.

I think that at minimum, out of the box (without expensive defense bonus builds), sets based on resistance and self heal (DA, Fire, Electric, to some extent Invuln) are strongly disadvantaged on Tin Mage, and generally throught Praetorian CW content. If you're relying on a heal to keep you alive, odds are it won't be there. Your only hope is in being hit less, and the Praetorian CW are also stacking -def, so defensive sets that can easily get past the softcap (Ice, Shields; maybe Invuln) will excel, especially if they also have good debuff resistance: Ice is probably best in that regard. All other things being equal, I'd rather be Reflexes.
As a soft-capped shield/ tank who went on his first Tin Mage a couple days ago, I can state that soft-capped defenses will not save you from actually being hit by the slows. I live around 50% to all normally, and I was above 60% most of the time with maneuvers and whatnot, and I still was regularly getting 5 or 6 sets of that blasted slow stacked on me in big fights. It's hard to tell in those chaotic melees, but I think what's happening is that the slow is being applied by those burn-patch-looking attacks, so even if you're softcapped it's just rolling 5 times a second until it gets lucky (at which point the debuff persists for an annoyingly long time). Even with grant cover's 30% slow resist, I was still seeing recharge numbers near -200% a goodly chunk of the time. Even an icer who actually took permafrost for 80% slow resist would be significantly affected by that much slow.

Now, being a set that doesn't need to rely on a heal at least means that your mitigation (unlike your secondary) won't be shut down by those slows, but I wouldn't say that defense specifically is any real help with the slows themselves.

Regarding this TF as a whole, I might be a bit leery of shield and ice, simply because of their lack of s/l resist for that final fight. Even with tough for about 45% S/L and a bunch of +HP, my shielder still would lose 75%+ of her HP if bobcat connected. An ice tank could probably be one-shotted. I think invul is probably in the best position overall here - tons of S/L resist, can be softcapped to the most important types, a goodly amount of DDR, and even some minor debuff resistances. Sure, dull pain won't be recharging fast, but the set's still in a better place than something like fire, dark, or elec. The only worry might be psi - I wasn't paying too close of attention, but do seers show up a lot?
  5. As for affording purples, dunno. Like I said, I don't know what the prices are these days, so that was more along the lines of a theoretical suggestion if you can swing it. If you don't care about getting damage out of VG, then you can just as easily do Basilisk's (or even frankenslotting) plus a lockdown proc (a dom certainly doesn't need the damage as much as, say, a controller would).

About squeezing as much recharge as possible, it's hard to tell without seeing a build, and I'm not really the right person to ask anyway as I prefer cheaper builds myself. If you post your current build, you might be able to get advice from some of the power builders here in the dom forum, though.
  6. Take fire blast. You're gonna have a hard time making a ST chain without it, and it's a good power in its own right. I think you're going overboard on LoTG mules, honestly, especially since you've got 5 of them and only 4 LoTGs to put into them. I'd drop one of the last two. Drop stone cages - you don't need it, as quicksand will prevent the scatter after stalagmites well enough. Replace it either with 1-acc-slotted stone prison for use on EBs, or just use the slot for fire blast. Overall, definitely drop stone cages and either stealth or invis, and replace them with fire blast and one of stone prison, RoTP, or fire shield, according to your preferences.

I can't say I'm a very big fan of spending a power choice *and* 5 slots just for set bonuses, but that's mostly personal preference.

Quicksand doesn't need 5 slots. 2 rech and a slow is tons. Ditto earthquake - 3 rech and be done with it. You can also probably shave 1 slot off of stoney if you find you need it elsewhere, although stoney with both pet resistance procs is really tough. On the other hand, I'd add an extra slot to stalagmites and fossilize. These, along with earthquake and volcanic gasses, are the core of your control.

Due to some quirks of the way the power works, volcanic gasses works especially well with hold set procs, giving them many more chances to go off per use than most powers. Thus, once you get to 50, I would try the following slotting, if you can afford it: Unbreakable constraint hold/rech, acc/hold/rech, proc, lockdown end/hold/rech, proc, ghost widow or neuronic shutdown proc. I haven't looked recently, but if the purple proc is too expensive you could substitute whichever of the ghost widow/neuronic shutdown procs you're not already using. This gives you more than enough acc, hold, and rech, along with three very nice procs that will be going off a lot over the whole duration of the power. (Before 50 you can just replace the purples with equivalents from the lower level sets, see how you like it.)
  7. Do earth/fire/ice or earth/ice/fire. To be honest, even though I have an ice/ice myself and love her, I have to admit that ice control isn't really very good compared to its peers. The lack of ability to defuse alphas can be quite frustrating at times. Earth, on the other hand, has a very good tool for that in stalagmites, plus a metric ton of other control options.

As for the secondary/ancillary combo, */fire/ice will have significantly more damage, especially AoE, due to the damage superiority of /fire and sleet from ice. You also get an end recovery tool to offset the expensive end costs of the rains in the ancillary. Ice/fire, on the other hand, will have somewhat better mitigation due to the ability to power boost stalagmites. While there might only be one power worth powerboosting, the fact that it's your primary alpha control makes it worth noting. This also gets you RotP so that you can try all sorts of shenanigans without worrying about the consequences.

Fire/earth/ice could be a possibility - much more melee centric and even more damage - but honestly I would miss the mitigation of earth/, even with the ability to power boost flashfire.

Yeah, but that's hardly the majority of doms. There's also a few blasters that have enough mitigation to not live and die by their insp tray. Besides, aren't things supposed to be balanced for SOs?

This is not true. Knockback is always directed radially away from the *caster*, not the point of impact. The only way m30 grenade will send enemies flying in multiple directions is if you, the caster, are standing in melee range of the target you are shooting with it. This particular misconception is sort of a self-perpetuating myth, because if you hear it and accept it, you never get a chance to see that it's wrong since you don't take the power.

Now, I still do agree to take buckshot instead of m30, but more because buckshot is overall a better attack and meshes better with the other cones in the set. With buckshot, flamethrower, and (eventually) full auto, you'll have plenty of AoE damage without having to use m30.

For AR/traps, I would suggest skipping m30 grenade, triage beacon, and time bomb - none of them are especially necessary. Sniper rifle is also not needed, but it can be useful, and you should have enough room to fit it in if you want it. Beanbag is an OK stun to put an annoying target out of the fight, but you don't have anything to stack it with, so it won't work on bosses. Skippable, but like sniper rifle, still could be useful and you should have room. Everything else is definitely worth taking.

Oh god, I have to try this. That sounds awesome!

You could even leverage knockdown in Force Bubble due to the lack of -kb in the AoE immobilize.

I'm finding, as well, that Electric is a very busy primary. Pairing it with a less active secondary could help to balance the work.
I agree a fair amount with the sentiments here, but I would actually suggest /sonic. Like /ff, sonic is a less busy secondary, and sonic actually needs the endurance support of conductive aura and static field even more than ff does. And it seems to me that sonic's resistance debuffs would help the offense-light elec/ set, given that it does have melee-oriented pets.
  13. A proc in a power that targets multiple enemies like those would *normally* have a chance to go off multiple times - the power affects everyone in range, so the proc has a chance to affect everyone in range too. The difference with the force feedback proc is that it is specifically set to not stack. The theft of essence proc is the one acting normally.
  14. He said he kept mag 60+ confuse on her the whole time, though (watched using the power analyser). That should be enough to bust through the purple triangles, which is why I suggested that possibly her version of unstoppable is different from the player version and does have confuse protection.

    Scorpion Shield

Shark skin has a fairly noticable effect, but it's not an obnoxious one. In some ways it's similar to scorpion shield - it's a similar sort of glow, but instead of purple it's a medium blue color. It's a somewhat brighter glow than scorpion shield, but it really doesn't look bad at all - as long as the color is acceptable. Oh, and it has that faint symbol pulse like scorpion, but it's mako's symbol and it's in a light blue.
  16. Problem with frozen armor (aside from the visual) is that the resistance component, though it lets you slot the 3%, also means it can't be powerboosted. I was looking into using PB'd frozen armor to help defuse alphas on my ice/ice, but unfortunately You Can't Do That. I really wish you could, it'd eliminate the biggest annoyance I have with that character.

As far as I know, no. You can't turn off inherent resistances, you can't revert the mez system changes, slows still don't slow, and powers still do drastically different damages than in PvE.
  18. I think it's an issue with the pseudo-pet, but not the one most are thinking. This proc in most AoEs goes off frequently since it checks against every foe. With shield charge, it still does that, but since the AoE caster is the pseudopet, that doesn't transfer to the player (which several have noted). That doesn't explain the fact that it still works occasionally, though. I think what accounts for that is that, apparently, when you use a pseudopet/pet power that has a (self-affecting) proc in it, there is a chance for the proc to go off once when you summon the power as well. So the higher chance for the proc to go off from hitting multiple foes is useless since it affects the pet, not you, but you still have a single chance for it to go off when you actually summon the pet.
  19. For what it's worth, Deej, I thought you had the best male costume by far. It's not as flashy or as complicated as a lot of them, but it's very well put together, coordinated, and thought out.

The event was truly a blast. I don't think I've ever seen so many characters in one place! I took these pictures as we were lining up for the parade, and I think even more people showed up later (linking the pics as they're huge). There were so many, I couldn't get them all into one picture from my place in line!

To elaborate on what Vidszhite said, unless you specifically went to a difficulty adjuster and enabled the setting "I would like to fight (Heroes/Arch-villains) at their full strength, not as Elite Bosses", you're going to be fighting downgraded EBs, not full-fledged AVs/heroes.

The reason you have problems with them is that, even though these AVs/heroes have been downgraded to EBs, they retain the special mez protection power AVs get - the purple triangles of doom (aka PToD), which gives them mag 50 protection from most controls. This means that, 50 seconds out of every 75, they are almost immune to mezzes except for sleep and immobilize. So you can't hold these sorts of EBs with any reliability, and therefore of course they squish you into the pavement while they aren't mezzed.

The trick to soloing purple triangle EBs is careful usage of inspirations. Your primary might not be able to keep you alive against them, but your inspiration tray can. Fill your tray with as many purples and reds as you can, backed up by a few greens/blues. Pop the purples 4 at a time if you're using small insps or 2 at a time if you've got mediums or larges - this will cap your defense for 60 seconds, making it very hard for the EB to kill you. Pop equal numbers of reds to help you kill him faster, and use the blues and greens to keep you going and patch up any hits that leak through. Make sure to have domination ready, and pop it for the end refill as soon as you're getting low. Unless you're fighting one of a few EBs who cheat even more than usual (Synapse, I'm looking at *you* with your immunity to slow and immob and your cheatyface autohit damage-dealing whirlwind ), this general pattern should be more than enough to finish them off.

Also, if you can, try to earn the Demonic accolade - the accolade power you get for this will also cap your defense for 60 seconds, so you can use this to substitute for one set of purples so that your insp tray lasts longer (it's not that hard - a few exploration/history badges, one badge mission you can get in ouro, and a 'kill 100' badge). Finally, use medium purples if you can, since you only need 2 instead of 4 this also helps your insp tray last longer. Last I checked, you could usually get them for reasonable prices on the market if you're willing to place some lowball bids every time you log out.
  21. Miss liberty does have unstoppable, which she tends to activate when she gets low on health. The player version of unstoppable doesn't have confuse protection, but it's possible that her version does. On players it's an extra ~21 mag protection, so if her version does have confuse protection she'd probably go from requiring mid 50's mag to confuse to requiring mid 70's mag. If I had to guess, that'd be my thought as to what might have happened.

So, what is it that PvPers are still waiting for? For Zones to go back to 'normal'? Zones have always been a joke even before The Big Changes simply because there's no control over number of participants which makes 'balance' an impossibility there.
I'm no PvPer, but I imagine they're still waiting for a way to turn off the *rest* of the i13 PvP changes - the DPA stuff, the mez changes, the gutting of slows, inherent resistance, etc. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I haven't heard any PvPers have *anything* good to say about the current system (can't say I blame 'em).
  23. Is all of this really necessary? I thought this was supposed to be a happy thread...
  24. Many have already suggested my favorites, but I do still have one suggestion. If you only read one thing, read the original thrawn trilogy by Zahn (Heir to the Empire, Dark Force Rising, Last Command) - and if you read more than one thing, read them first. Why? Not only are they by Zahn and hence awesome, they were essentially the first major expanded universe novels published. Thus, there aren't any references to other novels, etc - nothing you have to go read or a certain part won't make sense. All you need to do is have seen the original trilogy.

Aside from that, I would echo the suggestions of the entire Stackpole/Allston X-wing series, I, Jedi (and thus, even though it's not as good in my opinion, you'll probably have to read the jedi academy trilogy whose events interweave with the early parts of that book), the 'Han solo origin story' trilogy by Crispin (The Paradise Snare, The Hutt Gambit, Rebel Dawn), and everything else by Zahn.

I specifically *don't* recommend anything set, chronologically, after Vector Prime (the beginning of the 'New Jedi Order' series and the Yuuzhan Vong war). It's just my own opinion, of course, but I *really* didn't like the direction the universe took at that point - specifically, how dark and grim the whole thing got. If Star Wars stories were supposed to be 'everyone dies', they'd be set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I finished the New Jedi Order series, but I regretted it, and what little I learned about the next series was enough to turn me off of the era completely. YMMV, of course, but that's my two cents on that particular topic.

For example the signature character pvp is perfect for people who just want to have a fairly balanced pvp blast without spending ages grinding out all the best pvp gear as it uses all pre-made characters.

Before you blow your stack any further, re-read what you wrote originally. If someone didn't know any more about whatever game you're talking about than what you said, I fail to see how they could be faulted for reaching the same conclusions that ClawsandEffect did. You wrote that 'the open world PvP adds a lot of excitement' and that 'pvp is a huge part of the game' - I'm not sure how an otherwise uninformed reader is supposed to reason from that to 'they obviously are going to have the majority pve servers with no open world pvp'.

And frankly I fail to see what's 'half ***' about his post. While he may have been mistaken about open PvP being ubiquitous, that doesn't make his objections to the *concept* any less valid. Just because you obviously disagree doesn't mean he's wrong.

Funny part is, his post is directed against a particular syle of PvP and class of pvpers (which definitely do exist) and he specifically mentions that he occasionally PvPs and enjoys it, and the response is to start ranting about 'pvp haters'? Think about that.
