((I sent you a message in game, one character (Junsui) is a 14 year old Japanese schoolgirl, the other (Strange Gift) is a 15 year old British girl))

Yay hooray!! I really really like that, Super-Kari and Ultra-Dany look lovely in their festiveness!
-
Yep I'm in the failure club... for this year. Next year! Next year I willl book holiday and write nonsense, but lots of it!
-
It's no good. Despite having today and tomorrow off work, there's no way I can do this. I still like my characters, but I don't like the story any more. I can't manage to sacrifice plot and good writing in the name of word count. What I've written so far is mostly tripe anyway, and I know that when I come back to this story I'll be starting by deleting most of it.
Plus, this Friday my family is descending on the house for my dad's birthday so I really, really, really need to get on with finding space for people to stay.
Next time, I'm going to write something so utterly daft I won't be able to take the story so seriously and I'll be able to think more about the word count.
Until then, I'll be in the other room with my hot chocolate and self-pity. -
I have totally stalled.. still, with two days holiday I might, just might, be able to have a splurge and catch up.
I'm having trouble, I think, because the word count is making me pad things I didn't really want to pad, and I'm having trouble with that. If I don't do the 50k though, I will continue to work on the story, and next year I'll try again. -
I've been listening to Sigur Ros a lot while I've been writing, it avoids the singalong aspect because I don't understand the words! I think it's good for the style I'm writing because it all has a sort of other-worldly fantasyish feel.
-
I have been following my main characters closely for seven chapters and I suddenly realised that, five chapters ago, one of them had a dog... who hadn't been mentioned since....
I quickly rushed through those last five chapters adding what amounts to "and the dog was here too" so that's bumped my word count a bit!
Sadly, I have had to abandon the chapter structure I carefully set up in October. My characters just don't want to wait, and they've got to the city two chapters early. I hope there's enough action in there to sustain the rest of the story. -
Well it pales somewhat after that but...
Yippee 20k! -

Keep it up, Morgana and Weasel. On a good roll you can chug out 5k-10k words per writing session.
[/ QUOTE ]
...in which case over halfway through I haven't managed a good roll yet... I think 3k is about the most I've produced in one session so far.
Still, I've hit 15k today, despite deciding to log on and get half a dozen beacon badges for one of my SGs, and it's flowing a little better, so I'm not giving up! -
You're still ahead of me, Weasel... I'm struggling around the 13k mark. But I also have two days holiday in just over a week, so fingers crossed...
-
I'm now so far behind I'm beginning to doubt that I can actually do this.. 50,000 seems far too far away.
-
Done nothing all weekend- but it was my brother's birthday party. I think at this rate my two days holiday at the end of the month will be a very intensive writing session...
-
Well, I've improved upon my recent word count, having managed nearly 1000 today. Still not back on target, but it's better.
Mind you, my planned "tense evening at the wayside tavern" as the characters avoid getting to know each other just yet has turned into them all getting on quite well and debating which is superior, pie or cake... -
Last night I had to abandon all hope of actually writing, so I ended up drawing a map of my main country. Which I think will actually help considerably, it's already made all sorts of things clearer. That's the main problem I'm finding, that as it's a fantasy world I have to go out of my way to get things clear in my head to describe them.
If work doesn't grab my attention this afternoon, I might end up with a timeline as well. (Of course, a timeline has words so I could possibly include it in my word count....) -
I have stared at the screen for half an hour, managed 176 words of utter pap and then exploded.
Bah. -
Over the last two days I have managed a grand total of... 152 words. Pah. So much for getting comfortably ahead in the first week..
Dunno where my motivation's gone, I looked down the back of the sofa and under the bed, it's not there... -

Argh my characters are at it again! I was going to introduce the leader of my Thieves Guild as a sinister old man.. but when he opened the door he was camper than a row of tents!
Why do they insist on having lives of their own?
[/ QUOTE ]
Heh, he sounds like a great character already
[/ QUOTE ]
Ah this one'll only be in the one chapter briefly though, just a foil for one of the main characters.
Five chapters done, five main characters introduced, the actual story can start now... I did want to get chapter six underway before I went to bed, but my brain is starting to melt out of my ears, so I might just play a little bit instead. I'm still well on target, as if I get one chapter a day done there's still two days spare to play with. -

One of my main characters has become (essentially) Scottish. And one possibly equates to Russian. They were all originally intended to be Germanic...
Well, I've got the difficult bits out of the way, I think. I still want to get another two chapters done today though... -
Aaand I've ground to a halt again.... I must stop thinking about it so much, I keep getting bogged down in details!
-
Wah I didn't write anything yesterday and it's now three o'clock without me writing anything... This is ridiculous, I've planned all my chapters and yet I don't know where it's going!
-
I haven't written anything today yet
I got a bit bogged down in details with my healer's chapter and can't think where it's going without it in front of me, and it's at home on the computer of course.
But I did get ahead of my minimum target yesterday, and I have the weekend ahead of me... I'm hoping to get up to chapter 6 at least before Monday, then I'm nicely ahead and don't have too much to worry about if I stumble later. -
Oh the horrors of research! I told myself, "write a generic swords and sorcery fantasy tale and you won't have to lose writing time on research" and now here I am researching labour and midwifery and breech births...
But on the plus side, this is because I'm writing chapter three of 28, putting me weeelll ahead of my target. -

On another subject... I don't suppose anybody here knows anything about natural childbirth? I want to have a sort of midwifery scene for one of my characters but I don't know anything about childbirth personally (and have no wish to either!)

Could this help?
Beep
Chiefette

Thanks Chiefy, looks useful.
I will probably get around to looking on teh intarwebs for research, but I couldn't do it at work. The forums look similar enough to our web-based email system for me to get away with posting here though!
Ooh complications in birth.. there's an idea... -

But people with jobs and families and lives would find it a little more difficult...

*fingers crossed this doesn't desolve into a flamewar*
I can't stand it when people use that terminology to describe a differing lifestyle. Someone who can write from midnight onwards non stop has no less a life than someone who goes out with friends for the same amount of time.
[/ QUOTE ]
OK, sorry that's my fault for typing quickly while I shouldn't be on forums at work. I meant complicated varied and busy lives. If you can spare forty hours straight (or more or less straight) on one thing, then I'd assume it's not complicated. Either that or you're astoundingly organised.
Either way, I am massively jealous of anyone who can do that.
