    Yes, it was.
  2. Today, I got called a troll because I ignored a person who had an Empathy defender with exactly one attack (that likely never got used).

Did you know that ignoring someone you don't want to associate with is imposing your opinions on them and trying to irritate them into responding to you? Because I didn't.

Then you should try roleplaying with my Warshade, though it's disappointing that apparently I am the only one doing it right.

That's actually what I do with people who use asterisks. I just pretend they're saying everything they're doing out loud. Makes it easier to make fun of them.

    Why not do this?

[Local] Super Guy: Red Moon, huh? You say it's got something in it? Let me have a look here.
Super Guy takes the bottle, giving the list of ingredients a casual glance.
[Local] Super Guy: Compound 1-XZ? Isn't that one of the chemicals they use in Malta Sapper packs? Heh heh. No wonder it gets folks drunk.

I guess that's too much effort?
  7. I recieved your message and I'm a little displeased at the lack of will to improve yourself. I quote, "I have no interest in your criticism, now or in the future." If you don't wish to be criticized, I suggest not posting your stories on a public forum whereupon people may post their opinions on such stories.

In any case, I gave the story another read over. While I do still like it (it is written fairly well for an amateur writer,) I noticed you were using ellipsis within conversation. Ellipsis, as a rule, are used to abridge long pieces of text. They're not meant to show a "trailing end" as punctuation. Take for example this passage:
    Quote:
Dr. Paladin blinked his eye, and smirked. "Some things are a little different, I guess... Bowman, go get the boss. Ma'am, if you'd like to pull up a chair, I have some paperwork for you... medical history stuff. Do you prefer your forms in English or Russian?"
It would be better written as thus:
    Quote:
Dr. Paladin blinked his eye, and smirked. "Some things are a little different, I guess." He took a momentary pause. "Bowman, go get the boss. Ma'am, if you'd like to pull up a chair, I have some paperwork for you: medical history stuff. Do you prefer your forms in English or Russian?"
I noticed another passage that bears poor grammar:
    Quote:
One figure, obviously some sort of high priest or leader in a scarlet robe, cried out "Get her! The ritual must continue!" as he reached into his robe,
This is incorrect. It should read,
    Quote:
One figure - obviously some sort of high priest or leader in a scarlet robe - cried out, "Get her! The ritual must continue," as he reached into his robe,
While I've seen you use the proper grammar within other points in the story, this one particularly stood out.

    This paragraph:
    Quote:
Tatyana stood and and smiled, and turned to look at her visitor. He was tall, scar-faced, shaven-headed, but immediately recognizable. Her visitor looked back, and shock crept over both their faces. They both exclaimed at the same time, "You're so OLD!"
is a nice ending to the story, but it could be phrased better. I would go about doing it this way.
    Quote:
Tatyana stood and and smiled, and turned to look at her visitor. He was tall, scar-faced, shaven-headed, but immediately recognizable. Her visitor looked back, and shock crept over both their faces. They both exclaimed at the same time.

    "You're so OLD!"

As an added point, using asterisks in /local for an emote means that your name shows up in the right color, if you have that option on. This can be helpful for keeping track of things when there's a lot of chat scroll.

You know what else sets apart speaking and acting in the same post, that people have been using long before the first AOL chatroom roleplayer got the idea of asterisks?

    These things:
    " "

If using the /e command is so terribly difficult for you, you could do the following:

[Local] Super Guy: Super Guy gives a passing glance at the nearby bar, deciding, heck, why not? Could use a drink anyway. A few quick strides and he's at the bar, leaning over the counter and giving an nod to the bartender. "Hey. What's up? Can you grab me a beer?" The bartender acknowledges him, and within a few seconds he's acquired his drink.

    Bam. No need for asterisks.

  11. I enjoyed reading the story, but one thing I noticed is that you tend to use hyphens where a colon would be more appropriate.

    For example:

"A green glow spilled over the edge of a tall roof beside them, and the wind brought a faint noise - an alien chant covering a faint sob."

    In proper grammar:

"A green glow spilled over the edge of a tall roof beside them, and the wind brought a faint noise: an alien chant covering a faint sob."

Hyphens are used to separate and join words. If you've ever read Tolkien, you will see a lot of them. The quoted sentence above (and this sentence, too!) is appropriate with use of a colon: it provides apposition.

There's also times when it's more appropriate to use a semicolon.

    For example:

"Tatyana reached down and checked his pulse, which was still going strong - Yevgeny had just been knocked senseless."

    In proper grammar:

"Tatyana reached down and checked his pulse, which was still going strong; however, Yevgeny had just been knocked senseless."

It's proper grammar, and it makes the sentence flow well. Semi-colons are used to join two complete sentences; they are often used in the manner you are reading now. They can be used in a large amount of ways; yet, few people tend to use them accurately and appropriately.

Translation: "Go to hell, game developers. I hate this unique and interesting game archetype that you spent a long time developing the backstory of and making it nice for people to play it. I'm going to impose my own ridiculous concept instead of having to deal with an archetype I actually have to adapt to the backstory of! I'm such a rebel for defying the oppression of the machine!"

If you don't like the concept, why don't you just not play it? There's plenty of other powers you can use to represent your unoriginal angel character. Like Energy Blast. Or Broad Sword. Or Fire. Hell, anything vaguely angelic. Just don't mangle a perfectly valid and actually interesting and intriguing archetype's concept for the sole reason of "I think it sucks I'm going to make it better LOL XD". To do this is not only an insult to the people who worked hard to make that archetype for you to enjoy, but also to the people who actually roleplay that archetype and create actual, interesting storylines to go with it.

But that's too much to ask, isn't it? I guess people so caught up in their own self-importance that they forget what other people think or care about.

Using asterisks to emote is like using a spoon and fork to eat in a traditional Chinese restaurant instead of chopsticks. Yeah, you can eat with it. But it makes you look like you can't do it the way it was designed to be done.

So here's my advice: pick up some chopsticks and use them. You'll enjoy the experience a lot more. You can do:

    Quote:
[Local] Super Guy: *walks up to the bar* sup *grabs a beer*
Or, if you want to actually have fun and take the time to put some thought into the character you are controlling, you can do:

    Quote:
Super Guy gives a passing glance at the nearby bar, deciding, heck, why not? Could use a drink anyway. A few quick strides and he's at the bar, leaning over the counter and giving an nod to the bartender. "Hey. What's up? Can you grab me a beer?" Seriously. Is it that hard to put some basic thought into one's roleplay? Are people in some amazing hurry to roleplay that they cannot come up with posts that look like actual posts instead of some asterisk-infected fanfiction? Is it your "habit": a physical impossibility to not press shift+8 before and shift+8 after every pose?

No. It's not that hard, people aren't in that kind of a hurry, and there is no such thing as "habit" when it comes to consciously pressing a series of keypress combinations on your keyboard. Unless you have such low control over your own actions that you are completely incapable of avoiding such a thing, you CAN type /e at the beginning of your emotes instead of making yourself look like a tool with asterisks.

    Seriously.
  14. IN MY PERSONAL (and generally highly valued) OPINION:

You'll want to do the following:

    * Stay IC in local, team and supergroup chat. OOC chat is denoted with OOC tags, which should be used in IC channels and not in OOC channels. Using OOC tags in OOC channels is not only redundant, but also lets people make fun of you.

    * Use the /e command to emote, rather than asterisks. Asterisks are clumsy and make you look like a novice; thus, less people will take you seriously.

    * Create interesting character concepts. Don't be a generic angel or demon. Be a unique hero with a unique origin. But don't go overboard on the uniqueness.

    * Engage in roleplay. Don't let it come to you - walk up to people and say hello. Being dark and brooding in a corner only gets you overlooked.

You'll want to avoid the following:

    * People with "ERP" or "Futa" in their bios, unless you're into cybersex and/or women with male parts.

    * People who roleplay something that goes too far against the mechanics of their character. A Super Strength brute who happens to have a machinegun or is additionally a psionic is okay. A Peacebringer/Warshade that is "ACTUALLY AN ANGEL/DEMON LOL" is not "original" or "creative", no matter how loudly they whine about it. A Fire blaster who pretends his fire attacks are actually bolts of water is kind of silly.

    * People who roleplay in a flagrantly silly manner. Typically, these people stick to one-line emotes and don't take themselves or others seriously. Neither should you take them seriously.

    * Michael Bay movies. Seriously. The guy is probably intelligent, but every movie he's ever directed involves two seconds of exposition and ninety minutes of things exploding. That many explosions is not good for your health.

    PLACES OF INTEREST:

    * Pocket D. It's the /b/ of roleplaying - while you might have a good time there, you'll probably end up horribly and irreparably changed by the experience.

    * Atlas Park, under the Atlas statue. Roleplayers congregate here, but so does -everyone else-.

I'd slot ToHit debuffs in Seeker Drones -- it'll help protect you against def debuffs ... and will massively help your teammates.
Sure, I can do this, at the expense of the drones doing any worthwhile damage.

    Quote:
PGT is an entertaining place to drop (up to 4!) damage procs.
I find that the 7.5% recharge time and the extra hold duration works pretty well for me, but I'll try this suggestion on Test.

    Quote:
I love Caltrops, but mostly as a place to mule more damage procs. By the late game, mobs tend to get nailed in place by teams anyway, so I dig the extra damage. Otherwise it's good area denial.
I'm using trops to slow down enemies to keep them in range of Ignite, and the set bonuses the slow set provides.

    Quote:
The proc in Triage Beacon will only affect you when you activate the power -- that's not a really good return on investment, IME.
It's slotted there for the 2% ranged def, to be honest.

    Quote:
There's a resistance debuff proc you can slot in Acid Mortar -- it's outlandishly tasty, especially since you can stack Acid Mortars (if not the effect from the proc) on tough targets.
I can probably do that at the cost of the 3% melee def Shield Breaker provides.

    Quote:
And take hasten. No, seriously, take hasten. You want Drones and Acid Mortar up as often as possible.
If I ditched Aid Other / Aid Self, this would be possible. Global recharge on this build is around 70% so it could benefit from Hasten. However, I haven't had any problems so far, and from what I've seen, not faceplanting > an extra bit of def/tohit debuff.

    Quote:
I'm not a big fan of Aid Other / Self ... mostly because, at some point, someone will see AO on you and demand you follow the tanker just to keep him healed. Sorry, that ain't me. I think you'll get more mileage out of Assault and Tactics (Tactics especially since it helps mortar nail hard targets).
If someone asks a Traps defender to heal them, they need to get their brain checked. I did take and slot Aid Other due to Traps lacking a healing ability, but that heal is for emergencies, not as the tank's HP buffer.

Aid Self is there because, despite having 50% smash/lethal resist and softcapped defense, some attacks will get through.

    Quote:
You also might want to consider a PPP for a +def shield.
    YMMV, of course.
At 45% defense to everything, extra defense isn't too necessary since even +4 enemies will probably only have a 10-15% chance to hit you. The 40% smashing/lethal resist I get from Temp Invuln and Power Build Up is definitely a lot better in my opinion.
  22. Quick note: Due to Assault Rifle being Assault Rifle, don't expect this build to really go anywhere damage-wise until level 41. Also, the slot levels are haywire.

This build is designed for laying waste to hordes of enemies solo or in a small team. This build has totally softcapped defense (45.4% melee, 45.4% ranged, 44.7% AoE) and provides about 25% of this defense to the team itself through Maneuvers+FFG. Aid Other and Aid Self aren't absolutely necessary, you can probably replace them with Hasten/Superspeed if you wanted. Damage is good - with Trap's debuffs, Power Build Up and Assault, and AR's AoE carnage, you'll be clearing out plenty of enemies.

Standard tactic: Throw down some Caltrops and set a poison gas trap, back up and set your triage beacon/acid mortar/seeker drones. You'll want the traps to be set Pull them into the trops+gas with Burst, then once the group's there, your Acid Mortar and Seeker Drones will get going. After the mortar and seekers hit and trashes the group's defense/to-hit, Power Build Up, Ignite, Flamethrower, Full Auto. Finish up the remaining enemies with burst/buckshot/m30 while the rest recharges.

I wouldn't recommend soloing above +2 with this build. The smashing/lethal resist, at 50%, and defenders' low HP will probably prove fatal for you, even -if- you do have Aid Self and Triage Beacon for healing.
