I'm not sure what time zone I'm specifically in, I just know I'm on the East Coast. For example, the time in which I'm posting this message is about 10:40 AM.

[/ QUOTE ]
Yeah, that's my main problem. With you on the East Coast of the US and me in Australia, we have a 16 hour time difference. Makes it hard to co-ordinate with potential testers.
2. Well, as I said:
[ QUOTE ]
A solid Gladiator with a good damage output but low survivability.

[/ QUOTE ]

And as far as the Arch Mage thing: they're way overpowered. No matter what you put them with you're team is going to be way too good if you play 2 or 3 of them (and possibly only 1 of them). You get a similar effect on the villain side with multiple Night Widows.

In the interests of fair competition, you're better off not using either of them.
3. Thanks for the offer! Any chance you're in anything like the +10:00 GMT timezone?
4. [ QUOTE ]
From you discription I picture a tiny young women who blends in. She looks very average but holds insane amounts of power and is completely out of her mind. That is why I picture Aleph Null like this.

[/ QUOTE ]

That's certainly a very different tack from where I was going (but then again, I asked for that). Here's her original costume.

I also don't really picture her as out of her mind (that's more psychotic rather than psycopathic), although I certainly wouldn't want to date her. Or be within several hundred kilometers of her for that matter ...
5. Reminds me of the guy on the far right of this picture. His name is Major Mitchell, a takeoff of the Major Mitchell cockatoo.
6. I've got one I'm a little lost on at the moment. I've posted it before with a picture of her current costume, but I don't want to influence you.

Name: Aleph Null
Powers: Mind/Energy Dominator, Science Origin
Description: Female, approx 5' 6", slender (including bust), red hair, late 20s

Origin: A Portal Corp physicist experimenting on a new type of wormhole gets sucked into the event horizon. Failsafes kick in almost immediately and she gets spat back out, but something has changed. What was milliseconds in the real world was actually subjective eternity to her.

Eternity in an interdimensional void, where she went mad, through madness into sanity and back into madness again. Madness, sanity; after subjective aeons it meant little to her. But, power! Power crafted from the stuff of the void and madness coursed through her.

The destruction that she unleashed almost immediately at Portal Corps was immense. It took powerful psychics to calm her and put mental blocks in her mind to limit her power, but they could not extinguish it. They had to imprison her in the Zig as the only place with the facilities to hold her.

But now, Arachnos has broken her free ... and the mental blocks are breaking down ...

Costume:
My main problem is that her current costume doesn't reflect her origin, although it's well suited to having a Domination costume alternate. She's also not visibly scarred in anyway. Part of the fun is that she's a fairly small slight looking thing, but psychopathically insane with the power to level a city block ...

Motivations: May have an impact on how you think about her. She's looking for power, for its own sake. An eternity of helplessness is a fairly powerful motivator. She would delight in the story arcs of Billie Heck (power struggles) for instance, but probably not Peter Themari (his goal is too small) or Willy Wheeler (she'd find him pathetic).

Note: Her name is the mathematical term for the smallest infinity, the count of all integers.

That's great Foo! Thanks!
8. I finally got off my butt and posted my Gladiator Guide to the Guides section. It's still incomplete, but at least it won't get deleted now.

That might be useful to put in the section on Gladiators as well.

The (not very) Complete Guide to Gladiators version 0.3 [I8]
9. People have been nagging me to post this on the Guides section for a while now.

It's obviously incomplete, but I am slowly getting enough testing to rate each of the Glads. Feedback is welcome and I'm quite happy to revisit Gladiator commentary if you feel that it's unfair or incomplete.
10. Raider Engineer (Minion) 300pts
[CoH] : Raider Engineer (Defeat 100 Force Field Generators)
[CoV] : Raider Engineer (Defeat 100 Force Field Generators)
Powers:
Advanced Sub Machine Gun (Ranged, Lethal, Minor, -Defense)
Machete (Melee, Lethaly, -Speed)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
Build Force Field Generator (Build)
Notes:
This is an unusual Gladiator in that it is a non-Boss Gladiator that's actually viable for competitive matches. As has been stated before, team buffs in Gladiator matches are rare and this is a good one that should help you win an otherwise matched combat. The FF Generator also persists after the Engineer is defeated (which is a good thing, he's not going to last long if every other Gladiator is a Boss).

One caveat: sometimes it decides that it doesn't want to build its FF generator and runs in with his Machete instead. Makes you feel real good about spending the 300 pts.

Resistance (Auto, Resist: Sleep, Fear, Immobilize, Slow)
Notes:
As the Swift Steel is just a Boss version of the Blue Ink Men, so this is just a Boss version of the Night Haunt. As such it is solid, but it probably doesn't measure up to some of the better 250 and 300 pt Bosses.

Radioactive Smash (Melee, Energy/Smashing, Disorient, -Fly, -Defense)

A solid Gladiator with a poorly resisted damage type, some nifty melee damage mitigation secondary effects and a good ranged AoE attack (which is unfortunately rarely used).

Shatter (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Smash, Lethal)
Notes:
Another solid, bargain Gladiator. This is probably overpowered for it's price (not so much as the Cobra, though) as it can easily take down 300 pt Gladiators such as Tank Smashers and Mook Capos without raising a sweat. The damage mitigation on nearly every attack (knockback and disorient) is especially useful.

Petrifying Gaze (Ranged, Hold)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
O2 Boost (Ranged, Heal, +Resist: Sleep, Immobilize, Confuse, Stun)
Notes:
On paper this is a strong Gladiator, however due to an AI bug it is nearly unusable. The Sorcerer does not follow movement commands for long, quickly reverting to the standard PvE Sorcerer AI of teleporting in and out of combat randomly with Hurricane on to do random O2 Boosts.

Slash (Melee, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Whirling Katana (Melee PBAoE, Lethal, Moderate, -Defense)
Notes:
I'm a big fan of the Tsoo Bosses, but it is such a shame that they chose what is probably the weakest of them for Gladiator. This is essentially a slightly upgraded Blue Ink Man with superior hit points. In testing the Kinetics powers simply don't offset the lack of damage output you suffer for taking this guy. Quite probably the worst Boss Gladiator.

I've recently had some more experienced folks tell me that this Gladiator is an excellent support option. I haven't had the Gladiator competition experience to confirm this, but I'd be willing to say YMMV at the moment and test it some more before the next version of this guide.

Revive (Self, Rez)
Resistance (Auto, +Resist: Cold, Knockback, Sleep, Disorient, Fear, Confuse)
Notes:
You would think this guy would be better than it actually is. Unfortunately it is plagued by a few problems, including a tendancy to use Dull Pain as soon as it enters the Arena and a very poor cycling of it's attacks. In 3 on 3 Boss testing the Tank Smasher went down to every other Boss Class Gladiator other than Swift Steel. Even the self-rez (seems to be about 1 in 4 chance) helps minimally.

Frozen Armor (Auto, +Defense: Smash, Lethal, +Resist: Cold)
Notes:
Extremely overpriced. Glacier lasts about as long as the unslotted player's version ie., not long and the damage powers aren't as strong as most Boss class Glads. Perhaps this might be useful in multiples, but it's cost is prohibitive of that.

Powers:
Burst (Ranged, Lethal, Moderate-DoT, -Defense)
Full Auto (Ranged Cone, Lethal, Superior-DoT)
Jab (Melee, Smashing, Minor, Disorient)
Punch (Melee, Smashing, Moderate, Knockback)
Haymaker (Melee, Smashing, High, Knockback)
Assault (Toggle PBAoE, Ally +Damage +Resist: Placate, Taunt)
Notes:
The Mook Capo has a very strong ranged attack in Full Auto, decent Melee abilities and the Assault buff. Team buffs are rare in Gladiator so you're getting good value here. The only minor downside is that due to Assault and the Full Auto cone, you will need to make an effort regarding positioning for maximum benefits. Overall, very strong, and a staple for Villain Gladiator teams.

Power Jumping (Auto, +Jump, +Speed)
Notes:
The Gladiator badge is Crey Power Tank, but the mob name is just Power Tank.

A bit disappointing with regards to damage output, as it is handily outdamaged at range by both the Mook Capo and the Shivan Destroyer and pretty much outclassed in melee by most of the other Bosses. It also has a tendancy to burn through its endurance quickly and then cycle its lowest damage attack as soon as it has the endurance. But you don't pick this thing for its damage; you pick it for its prodigious resistances. It has by far the best defences of any of the Gladiators (other than NW or AMofA) and you can use it tactically to exploit this.

Dragon's Tail (PBAoE, Smashing, Moderate, Knockdown)
Notes:
This is a 5th Column Raserei Ubermenschen Rocket, pretty much equivalent to a Council Vortex Cor Leonis Archon.

A solid Gladiator with a good damage output but low survivability. Unfortunately its points cost is far too expensive for what it is.

Focused Fighting (Auto, +Defense)
Notes:
I have yet to see the 7th Gen PP Gladiator use Unstoppable, although Paragon Wiki says they have it. In certain formats, minion-only or Mastermind, where points costs aren't at a hurge premium, this Gladiator has a place. It has relatively high damage output for a minion and is more survivable than most.

Rikti Sword (Melee, Energy/Lethal, Disorient)
Brawl (Melee, Smashing, Minor)
Notes:
Not up to scratch for Boss battles, but it's telling that it's even worth considering it. Definitely one of the harder hitting Lt-class Gladiators and a staple of the Mastermind and no-boss formats. It's also one of the Gladiators that suffers from a borked AI, but in a good way for a change. Rather than use all it's nifty Psi attacks it seems to much prefer to close to melee and whack around with it's Rikti Sword. That's nothing to complain about; that single attack is probably the hardest hitting of all Lt melee attacks.

Kamikaze (Suicide, PBAoE, Energy)
Absorb Pain (Ranged, Ally +Hit Points, Self -Hit Points)
Notes:
This is an unusual mob in that it's basically the same as an CoT Agony Mage but with a much higher level of resistance. Speculation is that this was an early attempt at an Elite Boss. One way or the other, this is one of the two Gladiators that really unbalance the format. The Heal ability is too strong and the resistances are too large. Most people who enjoy Gladiator matches either restrict its usage to one per team or ban it outright.

Notes:
Excellent in restricted formats, making good use of Earthquake and Tremor, but fairly stupid about how it uses Stone Prison. Or more to the point, you need to keep it on a tight leash to take advantage over its fairly indiscriminate targetting.

Notes:
The Cobra is a villain staple. At only 250 points it's a bargain, with strong melee and moderate ranged abilities as well as some useful extras. The self heal is useful and their speed is extremely useful as a way to deal with Gladiator teams specialising in ranged attacks.

A note on balance is warranted. At 250 points this is poorly costed, as it is strictly superior to all other 250pt and 300pt Bosses, as well as Hellfrosts at 450pts.

Fortunata Seer Tactics do not seem to stack. That seems unusual, as Mook Capos Assault definitely stacks.

The Fortunata Seer is an excellent Gladiator for restricted formats. Her damage output is excellent and Tactics makes a noticeable difference on the accuracy of her allies.

Balance note: this Gladiator is very underpriced for her abilities. There are several Lt-class Gladiators that are more expensive than this, but I would doubt that any of them are this good.

13. The (not very) Complete Guide to Gladiators version 0.3 [I8]
by Min Min

What is this?

A guide to the Gladiator matches arena feature and the badges required to get the Gladiators for it.

Notes

This is only version 0.3 of this guide. My original goal was just the basic list of Gladiators. I've made a few corrections in that and started to rate many of them. I've also sorted out a simple list of each class of Gladiator and its points cost. Still far from complete, but people are looking for the resource so I thought I'd get it out there.

The Notes section under each Gladiator is beginning to see progress. Feedback is welcome for the next version of the guide.

A note on the Night Widow, Longbow Warden 2 and the Arch Mage of Agony. These merit 6/5 as they simply are in a different league of effectiveness compared to the other Gladiators.

Acknowledgments

Very little of this information is original. This is just my attempt to tie it all together in a human-readable format that doesn't require cross-referencing of several sources. I have made ample use of:

Badge-hunter.com
Paragon Wiki
The CoH/CoV Prima Guide
The Official Forum's Badges and Gladiators section (Thanks everybody!)

A Note on Gladiator Selection

Gladiator points values are broken.

Rank is all important in Gladiator combat with Bosses easily wiping the floor with Minions and Lieutenants regardless of the points differential. Unfortunately this fact is not reflected in the points values assigned to each Gladiator. There are also a couple of extremely over-powered Gladiators (Night Widow, Arch Mage of Agony), that further distort the format.

So, in normal Gladiator combat, it makes no sense to choose anything but Boss-ranked Gladiators.

As the Boss-ranked Gladiators are less than one third of the available selections, this greatly reduces the available choice for a competitive match. Because of this it's a good idea to have alternate formats in mind, such as:

(All these formats assume that Night Widow, Longbow Warden 2 and Arch Mage of Agony are BANNED; consider other bannings as required).
<ul type="square">[*]No Boss. Bosses are broken, don't play with them.[*]N Boss. No more than N bosses and no more than 1 boss of each type. I've had fun with 1 Boss, 2 Boss and 3 Boss formats.[*]Mastermind: 3 Minions, 2 Lts and 1 Boss each. Personal favourite.
A Note on Gladiator Commentary

Gladiator points values are broken.

Unfortunately it is very difficult to divorce the genereal effectiveness of a Gladiator from how much you pay for that effectiveness. For instance, a Hellfrost is an extremely strong Gladiator with an impressive range of control abilities along with a general level of resistance and a reasonable amount of damage, but what gives it a low rating in this format is the comparison to cheaper Gladiators. For 50 more points you can have 2 Cobras or 2 Smasher Elites, both of which would handily kick Frosty's butt.
14. Great! Just what this board needs! Now we've got the water, I wonder how we can get the horse to drink?

Just a few minor things: <ul type="square">[*] The line "is for spending time in the Shadow Shards, the zones not missions in CoV." is missing the badge title.[*] A note on the Tellus Legacy of Earth Gladiator might be useful. (A note to PM me the details of the Gladiator so I can add it to my guide would be nice too ).[*] The line "Disrupter (and Longbow Warden 2) was awarded for the enemy faction damage debuff mission from CoV launch to around Valentines 2006. This was Changed to . Those who had the badge kept it." is missing something.[*] Capitalization in the Family badge section is wacky. I only point it out because it's spot on everywhere else.[*] Accolade powers seem to be pegged to when you get them rather than just lost when exemping. Hence you sometimes see a rush to get some of the CoV accolades before L31 so that they can be used in Siren's Call PvP.[*] Might be worthwhile mentioning that it's handy to bind /loc to a key. I guess it's possible the guide might be read by someone who hasn't discovered /bind yet.[*] It's probably also worth mentioning that some mobs only come out at night in certain zones. This can be a source of frustration for a newer player trying to get BP Masks for instance. (That was my first exposure to it anyway, way back when).
15. I provided the powersets before, but I didn't provide any background. Hope this helps:

Min Min (Fire/Storm Controller) [1] [2]

She's one of the founding members of an aussie-themed casual roleplay SG on Justice. (The New Defenders of the Southern Cross).

She's a mutant who takes her hero name from her glowing eyes which have been likened to Min Min lights*. Her powers are telekinetic in nature, basically moving and heating the atmosphere around her and others. One of the reasons for the relatively skimpy costume is that she tends to burn anything more off when her powers get into full swing.

* That's an Australian thing, basically equivalent to the Will'o'Wisp although with a different cause. (Temperature inversion rather than swamp gas).
16. That looks really cool, Foo.

Zatanna fan from way back.
17. Thanks for doing this Foo, the sketches you've already done look great.

I was meaning to ask you what form of screenshot is better for you to work from, a straight front/back shot or some sort of action shot?

I noticed that a lot of your character sketches are posed and I wasn't sure whether you were doing that or lifting them from the screenshots ...
18. Is this a simple enough costume?

Aleph Null

I like that one already, the only thing I would possibly change is the orange on the costume parts to a red colour instead.

[/ QUOTE ]
Thanks.

It's all on the table. I actually tried red where the orange is, but that sort of blended with her hair. Certainly an option though, particularly if I adjust her hair to something else.

I'm also toying with changing the pattern to Cellular rather than Circles and generally lightening it up, going to grey-blues, grey and white.
20. Hi!

I tried this with Green Regis and I'd like to see what you can come up with:

Aleph Null
Mind/Energy Dominator, Science Origin
She's a Portal Corp researcher that was trapped in a portal event horizon/void dimension for a subjectively infinite time. Beyond mad and back to something like sanity.

More Background: I figure she's probably been in hospital for a while after her accident, most likely in a coma. After waking up she would have landed in the Zig pretty quickly as she explored her powers in a fairly sociopathic way.

Costume:
I've got a near complete mental block with this character. I prefer a relatively normally proportioned human female and I don't mind that head/hat/mask combination but I'm fairly unhappy with the rest. That could partly be the colour scheme and partly because I can't come up with a rationale to explain spikes and skulls with this character.

I had her shelved until I8 was live and I was going to play with the new costume options.
21. Nice costumes.

I'm looking for a good one for Aleph Null, my new Mind/Energy Dominator. The background is that she's a Portal Corp researcher that was trapped in an event horizon/void dimension for a subjectively infinite time. When she came back she was ... different.

EDIT: Sorry, just reread your inital post an noticed you want a screenshot of her current costume. I'm at work at present, I'll PM you one this evening, but other than basic body shape I'm fairly unhappy with what I currently have.

I favour cleaner designs more so than the animalistic or demonic costumes you sometimes see with villains.

EDIT (again): Here's Aleph Null. The sort of costumes I have been happy with: Fellstar, Min Min and Vostok Core.
22. My VG is timezone-based. It's mostly Australians, although we do have a few New Zealanders, some living in Asia and a few North American-based shift workers.

This makes a lot of sense for us due to the obvious timezone issues (we're mostly at GMT+10:00 ranging +/- 2 hours).

I can confidently say that a 6 hour warning for us is not going to cut it, and even then most of us will be at jobs or university at the scheduled time if it's within typical US play hours.
23. Was in this situation just last night. Mako would get down to 15-20% health and then hit something or other and go right back to nearly full health. After bashing away at him for 20 minutes and going through this pattern several times a couple of us logged and came back with lowbie /Dark and /Rad Corruptors that were promptly lackeyed up. We laid down the debuffs and Mako laid down within 2 minutes.

Easy, but depressing. I'm glad that the regen changes for AVs are being rolled back.
24. Firstly for the OP, the info for the Gangbuster badge is not correct. It's actually Marcone Capos you need to take out. Mook Capos don't give you anything.

Secondly, in reply to Blue_Daze, there are three main reasons for badge collecting in CoV:

1. There are a number of unlockable contacts that will not talk to you unless you have their prequisite badge. Some are really easy such as Henri Dumont requiring Strikebuster or Doc Buzzsaw requiring Bling. Others are much more difficult to get such as the Gangbuster badge for the Slot Machine or the Pirate badge for Veluta Lunata.

2. There will be Accolades after I7 which will require some combination of badges to unlock. These usually grant either a minor HP or Endurance buff permanently or give you access to a useful power with an extremely long recharge. These look to be in the list.

3. Bragging rights. "I have the Capbuster badge on my villain, my OCD is way worse than yours!" Also a good sign of a player who knows what they are doing is to look at their badge list. Only a few? Might be new. About standard? Doesn't mean much. Lots? Probably a player that reads the forums and plays quite a bit.
