Quote:Again, incorrect. *All* names are reserved. There is no level cutoff under which it is *not* reserved. While some people have argued that the name purges should only apply to older accounts, that isn't what I am arguing, which is why it is pertinent. Furthermore, the name reservation policy is still in action. Any character under level six on an inactive account does not have their name reserved.
The script mentioned is run *manually.*
Quote:The name reservation policy didn't only purge names when it was changed;
Quote:as defined, it should continuously purge names.

Quote:No, the current name reservation system locks up names as soon as they're used. The scripts have to be manually run.Except for the fact that the current name reservation system locks up names after characters pass level five
However, that does not re-lock the names on accounts that have had those scripts run.
Quote:But let's think of how many accounts have been created and then abandoned over the years, it builds up. -
Quote:I need to point out that those accounts have *already* been hit. Long ago, back in the dark times... er, wait... In any case, after globals, they ran a script where any characters under level 35 on an account that had not been active in - was it 90 days at the time? It's been a while. Anyway, those would be marked "available," whether they were taken or not. With an 8 year old game, I'd bet you'd get some good mileage out of opening up names of accounts that have been inactive for 7 years. The early names grabbed that have not been active for that long could very well house some monickers that'd make current and future players happy to use.
The second time the script was run, it was those under level 6, since that's where the names *were* that were snagged. (It's wholly irrelevant that you can "get to 20 fast now," quite honestly.)
So arguing about the ancient accounts "hoarding good names" (to put it another way) is really a nonissue. If they're inactive so long that they *don't have a global,* then anything under 35 is freed up - and don't forget, for accounts *that* old, they'd also have a maximum of 8 characters on a server (COV hadn't been introduced to bump the number of server slots for those that owned both games up to 12.)
I think some people really overestimate how much is held by those "old" accounts. -
Quote:Furthermore, given that names are required to be unique in the game, the fact that we are continuously locking up names is problematic for players who are actually playing. What's happening is that the current system is preventing actual participants (some paying) from fully enjoying things for the possibility that some people will return.
I can't buy this argument. I can't think of the last time I actually had trouble with a name being taken, and I make a *lot* of alts. So no, I don't believe "continuously locking up names" is "problematic" in the least. -
Quote:Ugh, don't remind me.However I would not really recommend staves for real PvP maybe RP PvP. Stone armor is pretty bad for pvp as well, without mobility you'd be kitted by a flock of defs and blasters/cors/troller... you get the picture. most melee would avoid a battle with a stone tanker/brute because of its survivability.
Pre-I13, my MA/Reg Stalker fought a stone/.... something, believe it was in BB.
Longest, most boring fight ever. He couldn't really hurt me, but it took a long time to whittle him down. -
And of course, this wouldn't avoid the Satin Rouge Angles running around. >.>

I think "no, thanks." Especially with Freedom, as I'm running into people fairly regularly who are coming back saying "I haven't played in quite some time." We want to keep them.
I *do,* however, think something like that should apply to:
- Old trial accounts. Their globals were all renamed "trial *random string*" so they're not that hard to find. Pop up a message for when they log in, IF they do, asking them to pick a global name (or have it revert to whatever the first character is, then give the message.) 90 days and they get freed up.
- Banned accounts. Given I still have a list full of spammers, and I doubt most people want oluiadf89234... still, those should just be completely cleared.
Also:
- Accounts that haven't been on in a year get an email. "Come back. If you don't plan to, please free up your names, click here."
- Accounts that are old enough to not have a global - well, the names under 35 *are* freed up from an old script. See if they reply. If not, archive 'em after 180 days after trying to make contact with an email or two like those above. -
Asked for before. Given our devs *own* pile of typos and the like, I don't think I'd leave it to them.
Generally, though, sure, it'd be helpful.
For now, type it up in a word processor or the like, then copy it over. -

Honestly, I'd like to go the other way - more less-than-6-piece sets with decent bonuses, and a few "free agent" IOs (either generic, say, End/Acc for instance, or oddballs like Heal/EndMod, or a proc, possibly some with 100% chance for a small effect.)

If you want to avoid a certain person's intent to argue in almost every post:
It's like the Coyote travel power in that it changes your form, into a panther (surprise, I know.) +Speed (IIRC) +Jump, and a toggleable stealth.
If you run your Claws/Nin Stalker (happen to have that as well,) you're not going to be attacking with it. It has 40ft of stealth - fine for most PVE purposes, stuff that'll see you will tend to ignore stealth anyway, but it won't stack with Hide.
You can't attack from it. You will need to retoggle after using it.
So, if you don't mind the form shift and retoggle for the sake of concept, grab it. If you're looking for Ninja Run +Stealth, this isn't it. -
Quote:Why do you assume you'll need to respec? Honestly, I prefer having the PPP contact at 35. I'd outleveled the power at 41 at times. So as I thought more about this question. Does this mean that to get a PP Power at 35 you have to actually level to 35...pick another power...complete the patron arc...respec and choose the PP Power? If so, that seems kind of dumb.
Also, does the contact automatically come to you at 35 like it did at 40 or do you need a broker (or another contact) to give it to you?
Take it at 35 with your second-last secondary power or something else you skipped before then. Take the first PPP power at 38. No respec required. -

Do think I forgot to add "Verge" (on virtue) and "Theorem" to the list. Very straightforward names. -
... which is also the reason my Bot/FF is rarely played. (Even though he's at 38... so he gets there eventually.) Buff, send in bots. Wait. As mentioned, it's the character that nearly put me off MMs all together. I can work around AI weirdness - I'd prefer not to have to of course, but I can. But "Sit and do nothing" - ugh, no, thanks.

Quote:... or want to exemp down to run a WST (or just for the heck of it.)Going back to your second question, yeah, it is pretty much god mode, but it's the last power in your armor set, so while leveling up at least, you can't forget the rest. Once you've leveled up you could just run granite all the time, although you might want to keep a couple of the other armors for when you don't want to deal with the penalties, or when you have to face off against a lot of psi damage.
A granite-only tank isn't much of a tank in, say, Posi.

Quote:... also, if a home user (like the OP) with a copy of XP needs it, (a) the "Virtual XP mode" does work on home, or at least used to, and (b) he can also do it via Virtualbox or other virtualization software.XP Mode isn't very useful to many home users. A couple of my clients use it to support some apps that don't play nice in Win7. But other than that...
Quote:As for the backup/restore tool. Most users aren't going to use it anyhow. Moreover, there are third party system imaging tools out there that are easier and far superior to the somewhat arcane backup tool.

What I thought was a good deal on Win7 turns out to be OEM/System Builder garbage. You know, the version that (supposedly) locks to a specific configuration. Forget that noise.
Quote:I guess now I have to find a copy of XP 64 bit that works and isn't a scam/burned copy. -
Quote:I don't know, most (not all) people who have English as a second or third language tend to be really *picky* in their spelling and grammar - or they make some specific tense and word order mistakes that show they're coming from a different language structure. Spelling you "u" and using the wrong "you're/your" or "to/two/too" and the like, not so much.Nothing short of "English isn't my first language" can redeem the spelling/grammar/syntax though.
As far as Poe... well, there's another quote, not from him - "Better to remain silent and be thought a fool than open your mouth and remove all doubt." Or if you want a really old version of it, "Even a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding."
Something for the OP to consider when breaching a subject of which he obviously has no understanding.
Edit: Also, as far as "veer off topic," I note the OP doesn't actually try to refute anything said, just start in on the people who point out the multiple flaws in his argument.

Quote:Bwahahaha... Right. I *really* love mention of the "tutorial." You DO know you can skip that, right?Heres the best way to find them people, this man right here has it bad, not only has but chooses to believe its a good thing, you dont get to know the game by remaking chars you get to know the tutorial and a small knowledge of that power set / combo , where if u spend time with those who dont have alttitis (level 50 +1 ) you can learn more of there powers than remaking that char your self.
And "Small knowledge" of the powerset/combo? I've got 27 or so characters at 50. Including several 50+3, by the way - to show yet again you don't know what you're talking about with your assumptions. I've been playing for about 7 years. I've run through every AT. I've explored every inch of the game. And y'know what, sparky? I'm the one in the "help" channel answering questions and fixing misinformation.
Frankly, those who don't have altitis learn from *me.* -
-
Coolest? Eh. Hess isn't bad, I'll grant, but it's mostly for the robot.
I still like the main Eden trial map. Nothing like it in the game. Huge, very organic, giant bones scattered here and there, it's just incredible looking. -
Altitis is not a disease. A disease implies it's something negative, something to be avoided. Altitis, instead, is something to be celebrated!
For too long those of us with altitis have been told we "suffer" from it. And yet, if someone wants to know if someone's played a powerset, who can probably answer? The Altitis 'sufferer!"
Who gets to know more of the game, from seeing a different way through? The altitis "sufferer!"
Who probably has someone in range of whatever you want to run (and is likely to be getting that needed salvage or drop?) The altitis "sufferer."
And "Bad for the SG?" I don't know how anyone can say that with anything close to a straight face.
Of course, the immediate linking with a PLing farmer shows the *immediate* bigotry and misunderstanding that we "sufferers" of Altitis have to put up with on a daily basis. Note also the utter misunderstanding of just what a unique and precious thing a character is! To think someone can suggest "just make a whole new person without rerolling" is, of course, ludicrous! Each and every character deserves to have a life of their own, their own story, the full use of all the costume slots they've earned! Would you tell a company that needs to hire new people that they can do just as well having their existing employees just change clothes partway through the day? Of course not! How about telling your spouse who wants another child that you can just have little Timmy put on a dress every other day and pretend he's the daughter she wants? Of course you wouldn't! So why should this be a "cure" for altitis?
Not to mention those of us - not always the older of us - who have multiple accounts. Who can bring along the buffer? The "sufferer" of altitis! Who can add "just one more person" when you need it just to start? The "sufferer" of altitis! And don't forget those of us who subscribe and/or buy things for both accounts - we're helping *even more* to fund the game - the *designed to be alt-friendly* game! - that some would deny our particular enjoyment of.
No, we altaholics do not "suffer" from altitis. We are not bad for your supergroup or the game. We are an army unto ourselves (moreso if we keep making masterminds.) It's time to stand up and trample the misunderstanding and *derision* of altitis into the ground, to say no more, to say loud and with pride from millions of voices "No, we do not 'suffer' from altitis! We cherish and enjoy it!"
M_B - 307 alts and counting! -
Quote:Dual booting ... works. *shrug* i see no point to it for XP to 7, quite honestly. A nice, clean install is best.Hmm...
How about dual-booting? I just got a new 1Tb HD and could conceivably stick 7 on a partition on it. It's been a long time since I've tried doing that so dunno how it would work.
I could get Professional for about $20 more than Premium. Would that be worth it?
Oh, and I'll be completely avoiding Win8. I think that is one of the fugliest OSes I've ever seen. Have no desire whatsoever to have anything to do with it. Just for the record.
And if you get pro for $20 more... well, do you think you'll be using over 16 Gb RAM? That's really the main reason I can see for most people using it.
(As far as Win8... with all my various issues with it, its looks are down the list a ways. It's functionally annoying as hell. For instance, you won't be able to use media center in Home, just Pro... and it'll be an added price addon at that.) -
Most of mine tend to be name-names or something it's doubtful would be someone's first, second or third choice. Still:
Clair de Lune (manged to keep during a transfer, too!)
Compulsion
Brimstone Cowboy - apparently this is more *others* being surprised than me.
Family Joules - fairly obvious for electric....
Home Fires
Ex Caliber (he should never have left her the guns....)
Home Guard
Unnatural Acts -
Quote:Just browsign through (since I do play MMs) and saw this...I'm not against Controller/Dom pets (Or random 1 offs like Dark Servant/Extraction), because I don't feel that they overshadow my character, but basically all a MM IS is a pocket (de)buffer for it's own pets, and I for one find that INCREDIBLY boring.
Let me say it *all* depends on the sets you're on. The first MM I was working on nearly put me off the AT completely - bots/FF. Talk about doing nothing. (Worse once the bubbles became AOE.) Bored me to *death.*
Before giving up on them completely, I went to the MM forum, mentioned this, and had some suggestions thrown at me. Ended up rolling a Thugs/Poison, and had a lot of fun to 50. /Poison on my second 50 MM, too - Necro/Poison. I've got others all through the level ranges - third highest is a bots/traps then, actually, that (rarely played) bot/ff.
Now, sure, it may be the AT as a whole doesn't click for you, and that's fine - but investigate some other sets if you haven't. Find one to keep you more active, if that's what you're looking for. -
Quote:"hoverblasting" has kept my defenders (and some blasters) alive - so has "telesniping" - in their early/mid levels at times. "Viable?" Works for me. But I'm not playing the "omgmusthavemaxdpseverysecond" game.My point is that if you're using a snipe at max range, you have nothing to follow it up with until the enemy closes in, and "hoverblasting" has never been a viable approach.
