The function of the power within the set and how it functions with the AT using that set is what we're talking about.

Nowhere did I make a qualitative statement about the power being "better," itself a judgement value. You could say Headsplitter is better than Brawl.... unless I'm low on END and just want a fast attack to get rid of the last 2 HP an enemy has, in which case brawl is better.

    Quote:
You say QR is one of the main reasons people play Regen and WP.
I say it's one of the things that drives that choice. Whether it's the main reason or not doesn't come into it. Character concept could be the "main" reason for someone to play it.

    Quote:
Which means you're saying that it's one of the main reasons Scrappers/Brutes/Tankers play these sets...since they are the only ATs with access to the QR within the set.

One can also say that the damage aura in Fire, Ice, and Electric are the main reasons people play those sets.
You're throwing out a bunch of nonarguments for the sake of arguing, it sounds like. The damage auras serve a completely and totally different purpose than Quick Recovery. Namely, to do AOE damage (and to help hold aggro, which they will tend to do.)

However, they boil down to "Doing more damage," which all of the ATs already *have* means of doing, and the Stalker - despite the recent changes which encourage sticking around and scrapping instead of the historic hit-and-run mindset - isn't typically the AT you want *holding* aggro. Therefore, said auras would be counterproductive to the AT's role - which is essentially spike damage, with followup damage leading to another spike where AS can be used as stacks build.

Damage auras, in other words, are not a net positive to (most) Stalkers. Should they get in over their heads, those sets can only disengage from one enemy via Placate. However, having a choice of sets which retain +Recovery - something that serves a completely different purpose - can be.

Plus, the ATs that *have* damage auras also tend to be heavier on AOE damage potential (and be "beefier" still than the Stalker, which still has the lowest max HP of all the ATs,) making those auras far more useful and central to the character's combat style (and the characters themselves can survive the attention longer.)

    Quote:
Maybe...this should be a suggestion for adding +rec as an inherent to Stalkers...so that Regen and WP don't get treated better than the other Stalker sets.
And this really has nothing to do with it.

Honestly, I'm not sure what you're trying to get at. I can turn that right back around and say, if you (apparently) want to add the damage auras back in, then we need to add damage auras to WP and Regen so they're not left out.

The *design* of WP and Regen is a different form of survivability, one which not including +Recovery diminishes. This is not true of the other sets Stalkers have. SR gives defense, Ice gives defense and slow resists, Dark gives resists and control, and so forth, and Stalkers really lose nothing by not having those damage auras.
  4. If you look at the other sets, usually an AOE damage toggle is what's lost. Wholly different proposition - if anything, they'll have a bit less END usage to worry about to begin with.

With Willpower and Regen, though, QR (additional +recovery) is one of the reasons for taking it in the first place on a scrapper. With Stalkers recent changes providing (more) encouragement to stick around and scrap it out, that loss of more +recovery is more noticable.

Also, for reference, the Stalker secondary sets "Lost" powers:
Dark Armor - Death Shroud. Cloak of Darkness modified to Shadow Dweller since we have Hide already.
Ice - Icicles. (We keep chilling embrace.)
    Electric: Lightning Field
Energy: Kinetic Dampening adds the effect of Dampening Field. Lost Energy Cloak (stealth.) Gained Disrupt.
Nin: Nothing lost, unique to Stalkers
SR: Lost Lucky (auto power,) but given Hide gives AOE defense anyway...

So, really, you're comparing apples and antique farm equipment.

  9. One of the things about Stalkers is that, even with ported powersets, they have to give something up. On the primary side, it's usually to make room for Assassin's Strike - they'll usually lose an AOE.

On the secondary side, it varies, but something gets modified or dropped in order to fit in Hide at level one.

For Regen and Willpower, it's Quick Recovery. Now, back when Willpower was in beta, Stalker players tried to convince Castle to fold the functionality into Fast Healing or *something.* (Admittedly this was before Inherent Stamina, so builds for Stalkers were incredibly tight - one of the reasons for Scrappers to take it, after all.) He was absolutely adamant that Stalkers, quote, "will never get Quick Recovery."

This tended to reinforce, for those sets, the "hit and run" play of Issue 6 Stalkers (the same playstyle that made them also-rans on teams for so long.) As someone who ran a MA/Regen Stalker to 50, I can say it was... painful.

This also was frustrating in that, unlike the other "just no" answers we get from the devs (such as AT/Pri/Sec respecs,) we never really got a reason - other than Castle apparently not liking the idea.

Since then, two things have happened that I believe warrants revisiting this idea.
    1. Castle is no longer with the company, and
    2. Stalkers got a *big* change in how AS works that massively changes their playstyle.

The fact that we have Free and Premium players who are locked out of IOs should also be taken into consideration here, as they lose (or have to pay extra for) the ability to offset the lack of Quick Recovery with IO set bonuses and the Cardiac alpha.

What brought this to mind was revisiting a couple of characters - Piracat, my 50 BS/SR (read: end hog) Scrapper (same one that got a cameo in the old comic, yep!) and that MA/Regen Stalker (also 50.) I was considering re-creating Piracat elsewhere as a stalker since I love the Stalker playstyle now, but wanted to offset BS's END use some.

    So, the suggestion?

Add Quick Recovery's END modification into Fast Healing. Obviously the power would need a rename, as it's no longer just "Fast Healing." With Stalkers encouraged to be more active in battles, END use is going to go up some to where it's noticed more (I noticed it as it is as I've pretty much always stayed to scrap it out with my Stalkers.) It'll make life a bit easier for those on SOs, and for those using IOs, it may open up some other slotting possibilities.

  11. City of Heroes and City of Villains *used* to be kindof-sortof separate games. They were merged years ago. It sounds like MMORPG.com's information is out of date. It's all just one big "City of Heroes" product. You get to COV by choosing "Villain" in the tutorial or (if you skip it) when you enter the game as a villain.

  13. Yes, I'll admit, I'm still fascinated with the possibilities of this storyline and setting, even with the EAT being long dead and the official "we don't want to work on old stuff!" line.

There are enough little clues and hints here and there (Gadzul oil, the eye of Horus in the water made out of oil in Oakes, etc.) that... really, I just want to see what can be done. Not to mention all the time travel we do now - yes, it's causing issues, but y'know what, why not have someone exploit that. Tie up a few loose ends!

    Settings:
    Ancient Egypt
    Small foray into modern(ish) Egypt
    Ocean (more fleets!)
And hey, if we can introduce underwater areas, even if it's just scenery outside, why not...

    Groups:
    Midnighters
Blood of the Black Stream - new group. This is actually going to be a fairly large group, given ancient (more magic) and modern (techno/magic mix) changes.
Pharonic guard (ancient egypt, minor group.)
Nictus/Warshades (specifically to see a little more of Shadowstar's background.)
Cimerorans (one timeframe being contemporary with Cimerora, also opening up some storytelling possibilities.)
Egyptian deities (for a little something more for Incarnates to do - but no, the majority of it would not be Incarnate related.)

    Ranges:
    10-20 - Modern BotBS.
Heroes: "Machine revolt." Start off in King's Row. Industry is kicking back in after the multiple wars, but something's wrong. Gets traced back to the oil and other lubricants coming in from Gadzul, an Egyptian oil company. Eventually leads to a voyage overseas to confront the company - the workers know nothing, the boss might know something, but someone's definitely working behind the scenes.

Villains: Environmental disaster is nothing new. Neither are the Coralax. But having the affected wildlife from an oil spill (one which takes on an odd shape...) mutate and start attacking is a new twist. So is the nanomachinery, apparently infused with some sort of energy, that drives them. (Work with Bocor, again, end up in Egypt.)

Both: After the side arc, hunt down and destroy the heart of the conspiracy and find out just what they wanted. Somehow, you don't think you're finished, though. You do, however, come face to face with the BotBS.

30-35ish - single arc. Did you think they'd forgotten?

Heroside, a museum is plundered, the only clue an oily substance - which manages to kill a guard in front of you. One who later turns around and attacks you, blindly. Easy fight (zombie noob!) but you know you're being watched. The Midnighters can only vaguely mention something being wrong.

Villainside - Greedy or not, you know when something feels like a setup, and this bait's too good to be true. So you beat some minions into submission, only to tell them you want them to steal something... sure enough, trap. And you get to fight off a horde of shiny black zombies. SOMEONE wanted to take control of you - and you can't let that stand.

(Special for Khelds: A summons from Shadowstar, who mentions feeling almost an 'echo' of herself when these events were taking place.)

    40-50:
    Must have Cimerora available.

The Midnighters summon you, mentioning that "odd something" going on, time folding back on itself. You investigate for them, finding the (modern) BotBS maintaining an odd series of portals that look like something's pouring out of them - but not puddling. In the center of it all is a dark pool. They make mention of "keeping them separated" and "having all the pieces" - at the end you find they're talking about Isis and Osiris. You've got to head back in time a ways... via Cimerora, where part of the group is trying to start the groundwork for a reclamation and reexpansion of an Egyptian empire under their control. You make it clear that's a bad idea, head to Egypt, convince the Pharoh not to try to kill you (mostly by dealing with the attackers that try to kill him,) and work your way to the temples - where you find the other half of the portals and ritual you stopped (or will stop... have will be stoppeding?) They're using Isis's grief to try to take control of her, sending her energy to the future group and Osiris, who - if raised this way - will be under their control. You basically time hop - defeat the BotBS, get a bit of Osiris back, letting Isis fight back, which lets you go get more, etc, etc, etc. until you end up with two whole, finally in control of themselves and rather annoyed, Egyptian deities.

    Incarnates:
    Solo/small team.

Pantheon fight! (not BP. Just a good old fashioned Egyptian smackdown.)
  14. Growth is not doable with this engine. Or at best, highly problematic.

As for the rest - flesh it out. Right now it's just a list sitting out there. It's only slightly better than saying "I want... things! Yes, add things to the game!"
  15. Nope. Quite frankly, games have been very positive. Frankly, I think my life is far better thanks to gaming - it keeps me involved with people, and is a way for friends and I to keep in touch with each other and keep active.

I have regrets. None of them have to do with gaming. I regret the 5 minutes or so of reality TV I've watched more.

However, if you did slot a stealth proc in swift or hurdle, it did not kick the IO out or anything, so it would still be in effect to day if you have not respeced the toon since then, even though those powers no longer accept sets.
Thus the "too badly." There are some instances where they will do so. But they try to avoid it.

  19. Mu don't fit.

The point of an epic AT is their storyline (thus the epic.) Banes and Crab Spiders are the everyday person (natural) in Arachnos irked at the whole "Destined one" thing deciding to hijack it and make it their own.

The Mu? They're not. They're descendants of specific bloodlines with a Magic origin basically forced into a cult, wrapped up and forced to worship their goddess. (References in one of the Mu storylines to "you rescued them, then we gave them a choice to join us or die. Most joined." ) Totally different setup, different origin (Magic) and it'd make zero sense after the 1-24 path you're forced on.

Plus, as Xzero said... Electric blast. Corruptor or Dom, Sirocco patron. There's nothing special about their powers, just their look - red bondage fetishists. (And remember, people complain about the Crab backpack... ) It's mentioned that after years of service and rising high enough in rank, Mu are finally allowed to *show their face.* Not dress how they want, or run around freely and use their arms and legs, just *show their face.*
  20. I believe the "tech says why" answer is that the engine can't handle grappling and the like.

    However,
    Quote:
We are (for the most part) super powered individuals, we should be able to pick up these guys and use whether travel power we want to get them to where they need to be
you REALLY underestimate these. Don't forget, these are the civilians that step off skyscrapers without damage, and as they casually walk by and wave push a Granite-ized stone tank out of the way without slowing down. If anything, they should be picking US up and heading for the exit.

  22. The phase shift on Illusionists is 5 seconds on, 10 seconds off. You should *have* a pretty good window to take them out - they can't heal much in that 5 seconds, and if you know your attacks, you can make the most of the unphased time.

Supergroup bases aren't a "We don't want to touch it," it's "The person who set it up coded it very oddly and didn't comment their code - if we look at it sideways, it breaks." And they're wary of starting from the ground up - not just because it's a fairly big system, but because of the risk of breaking existing bases.

MA... I think they've mostly given up on. Honestly, I think it's ranking there with PVP in - paraphrasing Zwilliwishiwerealittlebarofsoap - basically being a very high maintenance system. IF they had the manpower, I'm sure they'd write scripts to deactivate/remove old exploits, and have someone reviewing submitted arcs (where you could test - because who cares if you get virtual badges - but publishing it live would require manual review.)

The stuff I *hate* seeing lost to this attitude are:
    - Some of the epic ATs, or even epic AT ideas that could be just expanded into zones. (Avilians - dead, since we have wings, Coralax, Blood of the Black Stream, etc.)

    - Cimerora. It's just... sort of there for ITFs. The incarnate bit feels odd there.

    - The rocket launch sites that never got finished.

    - All the little clues and hooks sitting around (some feed back into prior points... if you do, I think it's Steph Peeble's missions, you find things like a hollow skull (the Avilians) and "something they pulled up from the ocean" (... I forget the name, but it's basically a slave race for the Coralax.) Or, if you look in the water (fly up a bit) by the sunk tanker in Oakes, you'll see an Eye of Horus formed from the oil spill - that was a link to the Blood of the Black Stream.

Some of it can get really frustrating to see what "might have been" that they won't touch now because "we want our new people to work on their own new stuff!" Well, y'know what, make me a new people, give me what's in the lore bible or old notes, and let me see what I can do with the "old stuff."

If those systems were workable in an MMO, don't you think some form of them would be either in this game, or any game, by now? It's been almost 10 years since they started planning/developing CoH.
Most MMOs are trying to be "Wow, but different," quite bluntly. Specifically because they're trying to get a massive (and unrealistic, WoW-sub-level) return on their investment.

For instance, we have travel down pretty well here. Multiple ways, no need to pay anything (but a very little bit of time) to "unlock" fast travel within a zone and a train system everywhere else. Compared to walking everywhere until level 60, that sounds pretty good, doesn't it? It's something that can be set up in almost any genre.

Now, look at most other MMOs. Walking around giant worlds basically burning time just to GET from place to place. In COH, I can log on, get a mission done, and log off in 15 minutes. In most other MMOs I've messed with, I will have walked (or slowly ridden a horse or something) about halfway to the mission by then.

Or how about calling contacts? Now, admittedly it doesn't make sense for Sir Ridesalot of Ye Olde Kingdome of Gnomidon-Swordyface to have a cell phone, but *some* form of contact like that could be done, right? Yet, for most I can think of - with very few exceptions (thinking TOR's holocomm, which is only shown and usable here and there,) you have to hoof it back to the contact or dropoff point. Even in situations it would make sense (TOR, again - why do I not have some sort of communicator, so I only have to drop off physical items - or maybe send my companion back to do it?) they don't do it.

As you said, it's been 10 years. We're at our 8th anniversary. SOMEONE should have picked up on these, right? Keep players happy by removing some of the tedium? Instead, most are not wanting to deviate from WoW - which means "If you subscribe, we want to waste your time so you spend more time in the game. If you're free, we want to waste your time so if something comes up to ease that you'll buy it."
