Sounds like great advice, Feycat. Should I find myself playing, I will definitely keep it in mind. Thanks.

Lightening the tone a bit, perhaps:
In my first month or two of playing the game, I didn't realize that you could combine enhancements from the tray; I thought both had to already be slotted in the power. This led to some ... interesting slotting, as you might imagine. I don't recall how I eventually learned otherwise. -
That's a nice university campus, Coyote.

Cartoony, sci-fi WoW, etc etc -
You know what? I am perfectly fine with that.
I'm not as completely burnt out on such games as some (especially those who've been playing WoW for the last eight). Auto Assault was like that, in some ways, but this looks much more polished than that game ever was. (The driving was okay, but as we used to say in Interstate '76, never get out of the car.)
If it offers me decent gameplay that improves slightly on the standard, with explicit support for playstyles like explorer and builder, combined with an art direction and sensibility that makes me think of Firefly crossed with Titan AE (mmm, Bluth-y)... I'm there.
It's just that now, I think that in the back of my mind there'll always be that nagging "don't get too attached, because who knows" -
42. And I had that happen to me the first long weekend, when the grief was still fresh; logged in on Sunday, intending to take more screenshots, and... no.
The pain has eased a bit since. I've exported all of my characters and been working on my list of zones to screenshot and demorecord, one or two a day. But I haven't done much if any actual playing. I may do that this weekend; I have one new alt that's not 50, and had figured on just leaving him there, but now that double xp's been turned on, might as well be tidy, eh?
Whatever you are feeling, at any given moment, I promise you: you are not alone. -
But we're not a Korean game, for Koreans, so...

Next to losing CoH, the worst part of this has been losing hope for WildStar, a game I had previously been anticipating greatly. As I said elsethread, "now the only question is whether it gets canceled before or after it launches."

Damn it.
Now I want brownies. -
Quote:pohsyb, you know I love you and I love this game, but...Truth be told, no one had any idea how to make a raid, so we just decided to make something REALLY hard (figuring the players always outperform expectations). After we made it, the question became "Is it theoretically possible?". Thats when when came up with the triangle idea. It was even worse than what Arcana said because I think you needed to be slotted for max range, but the math did work out. Anyways once we concluded it was theoretically possible, that was good enough. I don't think we ever expected people to actually do it that way. (I didn't, at least)

Time begins and then time ends
And then time begins once again
It is happening now
It has happened before
It will surely happen again -
For me, Mids has mostly been a convenient way for my (much more numbers/powers-savvy) friends to make and send me builds on request, which I then dutifully follow.

Wow, that's amazing. I was nodding along to the first part, and then when it got to the lost bits of "popular entertainment" that no one thought were worth preserving, I got the goosebumps.
Thank you for posting this. -
Find a buddy in the US that you trust to order it for you and send you the code?
Caveat: I have no idea if there are different codes for EU. -
And stuff you post on social networking sites will never get back to your boss. Or future bosses.

Quote:Would this be one (or more) of them?Five years later, the stub had still never been replaced with real encryption the way I had intended. That year users found a way to trivially gain access to the micro feature... not by reverse engineering my ridiculous toy algorithm, but by simply swapping versioned components from other installations, defeating the higher level logic that decided whether the encryption handshaking needed to happen at all.
There's probably more than one lesson in there, somewhere. -
I keep meaning to download the Saga, now that it's finally done and ready. It's almost criminal that I haven't yet, considering that I have the first three games and the Kilrathi Saga bundle/re-release and Privateer and Academy and Armada, for God's sake...
I miss when Origin made great games, and wasn't just the name for EA's bad imitation of Steam. -
I have never Hami raided.
Ever.
In eight years.
(Until the night of the announcement, when the Paladin invited me to one. Alas, we didn't have the DPS to get through the first phase, and it was decided to try again some other time. So I still haven't completed one.)
See, back when I started, the Hamidon was for the hard-core, and consisted of trying out various strategies to get around its seemingly inassailable defenses. When a way of beating it was found, the devs of the time (Jack et al) would plug that hole in the next patch and the whole thing would start over again. They were apparently waiting for someone of finding the "right" way to do it, and I'm not sure that the players ever did.
Eventually the Hamidon was retooled into its current form and many people put it on "farm." And that was what we had for raiding, until the Mothership and then Incarnates.
But I was never a raider. It's probably my least favorite MMO-related activity, and why I stayed away from other MMOs (WoW, notably) in which that's the entire endgame. For a while there, I actually took pride in the fact that CoH, my game, didn't have raids like the others. It was different and special and not for regular MMO players. Eventually we did get raids, in a form that I could almost stomach. And I climbed the Incarnate trees (on some, not all of my characters - the ones who I could justify having that kind of demigodlike power), and once I had my T4s, I was done.
There was another reason, though.
From the very start, I questioned the wisdom of taking bits and pieces of the big blob and sticking them into yourself to increase your power(s). I imagined a future event where everyone with more than a certain number of Hami-Os became... infested. (If you've played the Underground Trial? Like that.) Maybe they'd lose control of some of their powers, or be taken over completely. Your character is now an NPC, an extension of the Hamidon.
I knew it would never really happen. The screaming from the players, all of them by definition the most hardcore segment of the playerbase, would be epic. It would drown out the flames over ED. But oh, it would sound so sweet to my "pure" characters, sitting on the sidelines. The ones who refused to take a bite of the apple, the promise of easy power for a cost to be named later. -
The first post, and what you did for the video, seriously impressed me.
The second, of Portal Court, left me in awe. -
It's been semi-common for a while now, over in the forums for my very first (non-3D) MMO ever, Puzzle Pirates, for one of the developers (who goes by Cephalopod) to respond to some "I wuz band 4 no reason" posts with the damning details of exactly what they did to get a time-out or permanent ejection from the game. Other players take great amusement in seeing someone get "CephaloPWNED", and join in with the pointing and laughing.

I... have farmed.
The first time was way back around Issue 2. I was asked along on a demon farm, back when the demons that came out of Oranbegan portals gave xp. (This was why they don't.) I was new, I didn't know what I was doing.
When I made a disposable character* for an event on Freedom a year (I think) ago, the one that gave a badge for your account, I did know better. But this was Freedom, that's what you do there. So I got her on a fire farm for a quick dozen levels.

That's... so weird. But I'm glad that we have such an awesome admin on the job.

I've been toying with the notion of a character (not any of my existing ones, as their stories are part of this game/world and rightly end here) who will be - after the fashion of Kal-El, certain Crisis survivors, etc - flung from this universe into that one. And who has to deal with the massive survivor guilt, among other things.

Someone tell all the people on Champion, Infinity, Pinnacle et al that they don't exist, or at least don't matter.
I'll be standing over here. In the bunker.
