And, of course, the assumption for knockback is always "all over creation" and never "wielded like a scalpel". This first is a player problem, the second is an art.
Just like an incompetent herder gets the team killed, and a great one maximises AoE damage, a bad knockback user makes things needlessly difficult, while a good one makes sure than no one gets close enough to the squishy types to melee them, or does trickshots on runners to have them land just where it'll hurt them most in another second.
And frankly, I've got more defeats that can be attributed to a bad herder than knockback. The number is 15, more than that and they spill over to the rest of us. And stop running all over the place, the enemy group is right there all bundled up already, just make them point away from us and let the AoE carnage happen.
I'd much rather have a Storm Summoner that has mastered knockback on the team than a Brute who thinks he's soloing. A Master Storm Summoner is one of the most awesome spectacles in the game. I wish I was that good with Storm... Maybe when Water Blast arrives, I'll try another Stormer. -
Quote:You're a couple of pages late with that prediction. So you can be utterly wrong in everything you've said so far in this thread? Gotcha.
But I already do educate by the demonstration of proper KB use. I don't even need a wall, hover or hoping around to show that. But as I said before, that doesn't stop prissy whiny gits from getting their panties in a minor twist. This new enhancement just puts fuel on that fire. And how long is it going to take for someone to start suggesting more of these types of enhancements to make that other 'it's unique' argument eventually invalid?
As I see it, this IO is two things: A pretty neat quirky IO, and a bullying tool.
The former, I have no issue with, there are several IOs that do some odd things. Some are good, some are... eh. It's the second part I worry about. There's sort of an uneasy truce between people who are good at knockback and melee types where everything has to be herded up into a tiny little ball of death. This IO does not help keep this peaceful, at all, as I hope this thread is beginning to show.
This IS a problem, and one that really needs to be addressed before this IO makes it to Live. Otherwise, things risk getting ugly. This genie cannot easily be put back in the bottle. In fact, now that we know this tech exists, it may already be too late.
So before this IO goes Live, the devs really should ask themselves this: "Are we okay with giving in-game bullies another way to harass other players?" Because that is what this IO is. -
-
Eh, I just want a companion IO set just for Knockback powers. With a +1 mag KB (unresistable) IO in it. (Call it "Irresistible Force") I'd slot Force Bolt with that in a heartbeat. Of course, it would make knockback universally useful to do that, so we'll never get one of those. Or will we? Surprise me! A purple Knockback set would be funny.
And yes, I do see how useful this IO is, it's why I'm being so loud about it. Yes, it's "optional", except, you know, not. And that is a problem. If there's going to be a KB/KD tradeoff, it needs to be an actual tradeoff, not a no-brainer. So my question is, really, what are the devs going to do to improve knockback so this IO is no longer a no-brainer to slot?
Knockback needs help, it's needed it for a long, long time. And this IO? It's not helping, at all. It just makes the problem even more obvious. But maybe that's for another thread, really, a bit of a brainstorm on how to fix this, properly, not just put a band-aid over a gunshot wound. -
Quote:No, you're not. *points to wall of text above*Am I the only one who thinks there shouldn't be an IO that converst KB to KD?
[Edit: I see by the above... that I am not. Though it seems fervor is well above what I have going on.]
EDIT: Yeah, I might be a little too harsh on it, but this is exactly what I do NOT want to happen to the game. -
Quote:Knockback is a tool, one that has been nerfed repeatedly in the last year or so. Every time it becomes useful in some way, it gets nerfed. You notice that lava doesn't do damage to anyone anymore? That's because knockback became useful, even somewhat powerful. Can't have that. So bye-bye verisimilitude, lava is now harmless.KB is the devil. The rest is up to you. For me it means there are powers I can now enjoy on my scrappers and stalkers. This will go right into Crane Kick on my MA toons. CK has kept me from enjoying the MA set for 8 years now. Finally I can enjoy that power set.
Not to mention my PB, the cone I skipped in KM, Shockwave! WOW I am so excited by this!
And now this abomination of an IO appears. If I had the Inf, I'd buy every single one that came on the market and destroy it. The fewer of these that exists, the better. It unbalances several powers that were dependent on their knockback to be allowed to be that much more awesome, like Tornado and several AoE attacks.
But the worst part is, if this IO becomes even slightly common, it becomes a "requirement". Not officially, of course, but as you said, why not slot it in Crane Kick (except for losing the awesome "Kick badguy off high building" finishing move)? It's the "optimal" strategy. And that is terrible. Especially if it becomes a widespread idea. There's already too much unjustified stigma against knockback, this will not help that, at all. It will only make that problem worse. Much worse.
What we need is MORE knockback. Useful knockback, though, none of this "chance to" stuff. And stuff to knock enemies into, other than the Scrapper. We need knockback, a standout feature of CoH, to be awesome. The ability to affect Archvillains would be a nice place to start. Knockback is the only status in the game where a mag 10,000 protection exists. Why is that? It's not like there's anything dangerous left to knock anything into. That's nerfed already.
Frankly, I'm sorely disappointed that this IO even made it out of concept stage. It's such a bad idea, it should have been rejected outright. So many balance issues coming up...
And the worst possible thing? That this means that knockback will never get looked at properly, and turned into what it could have been. Knockback is a superheroic staple. It should have been front and center from the start.
The solution to the knockback "problem" is not to be able to switch knnockback off, it's to make knockback useful and desirable in several situations. -
Quote:This is already one set too many.I can live with that, I just hope it is something you guys add to other sets at some point.
I wish this set didn't exist at all. If I'm EVER asked to have this set one any of my characters by someone who thinks knockback is the devil, I'm giving serious consideration to cancelling right then and there.
This is a mistake and will only cause more social friction in the game. -
It's a giant monster that almost wiped out mankind in another dimension AND went toe-to-tentacle with Emperor Cole and came out ahead. Yeah, I want to see Praetorian Hamidon get beat up. I only have one question about it left... Does it have stats?
Because if it has stats, we can kill it. -
It's the obvious choice for a Red Riding Hood type character. Possibly with Pain Domination for a secondary. She's followed around by wolves and lions, and has the power to make your pain go away... or cause a worse pain.
And yes, the Dire Wolf should be named Granny. -
A proper Alpha Male would have asserted his superiority without invoking death by robot army. You know, posturing, talking big, belittling the poor chaotic Primals. You know, doing the whole evil dictator thing right.
To reach "DESTROY THEM ALL!" you have to go way beyond Alpha Male to extreme paranoia. Which, granted, when you have giant monsters trying to eat everyone, a resistance movement that try to destabilize the only thing keeping the monsters out, and a firm belief that the only one powerful enough to rule everything is yourself. Really, Cole's downfall is he believes himself a benign dictator, which makes him dangerously unstable. Anyone in power can do scary things "for the greater good".
The proper response, as far as I can see, would have been to recruit help. Tyrant vs. Hamidon was a draw. Get Statesman in for a 2-on-1 and beat up Hamidon. And, no, kidnapping him to siphon his power is not what I meant. The Power of Zeus doubled... But why stop at double? There are several Coles, although most of them evil, in the multiverse. Get enough and stomp Hamidon.
Actually, it's kind of worrying in itself. Name one GOOD Cole apart from Statesman. Statesman could rightly have been a bit paranoid himself about that... -
Cole finds out there's another universe. It's full of superpowered individuals and monsters. If Cole were to draw too much attention to his universe, they could cross over in force.
What should Cole do now?
A: The existence of parallel universes is now a state secret, a formal request to stay away will be given should they contact us.
B: Contact them peacefully in secret and possibly recruit help with the not-quite-dead Hamidon issue.
C: Destroy them! Full scale invasion before they notice us!
If you chose A or B, congratulations! You're smarter than a supervillain dictator! If you chose C... why would you DO that?! -
Ooh, this is a fun idea for a thread. I mean... um... GRR! RAGE! SMASH!
I want to join in on the evil fun!
If I was a Dev and could do something that would make people hate me I would...
Finish Off Mission Architect
No XP, no Inf, only Tickets. Break the promise of "being able to level to 50" in AE, and just kill the farming tool once and for all. The Tickets are kept as a consolation prize.
However, there's a method to the madness. If XP is no longer an concern, then arbitrary limits on ambushes, enemy composition and so on become superfluous and can be removed. Want a mission with only Clockwork Gears and 100 ambushes of them when you click a glowie? Sure! Want to team up with the entire Freedom Phalanx? No problem, and they'll all be full power. By sacrificing XP, you get total freedom to make crazy arcs.
Kill the current PvP
People that like PvP hate I13 PvP. People that don't like PvP haven't changed their opinion. PvP in this game has been a massive failure, which is a shame, since it had potential. But nope, kill it, and re-purpose the zones to give Villains the much needed extra PvE zones.
Again, though, I have a plan. With all the old PvP baggage cleared out, there's an opportunity to remake it. From scratch. Players would have the stats of a Boss when fighting each other, and everything else would work as closely to PvE as possible. New PvP would launch with several objective based gametypes, including the "Why haven't they done this yet?" type of Safeguard vs. Mayhem. Most gametypes would award more kinds of PvP play than just killing dudes.
Make small team/solo versions of the Incarnate Trials
Target would be about four players. They would not generate the same rewards as a raid-size trial, but they'd be pretty good, still. For smaller servers and the people who just don't like raiding. A single team Underground trial would be sweet.
I think that's what I have that isn't too petty or trivial. "More Knockback" is fun, but more knockback where?
So, do you hate my ideas? I should hope so, otherwise I failed. I kind of want to see some of it happen, although maybe not this extreme. -

I prefer #1 as well. Penny just looks better in that one, and Shadowhunter looks like a teddy bear. A big evil teddy bear, but still.
-
Nice survey. Gets to the point.
I couldn't think of much I wanted on the Paragon Market that isn't already there, except for one thing: A permanent unlock of the Costume Recipe costumes. Wouldn't it be nice to make a character with rocket boots from level 1?
Mine probably stands out, though. I picked Underground as my favorite iTrial. I just like the hordes and hordes of enemies and it's a classic dungeon crawl. -
The Wentworths experience is RMT spam and that fool who doesn't unsummon his loud and obnoxious demons ever. I use /ah to avoid these people.
Make an underground area where Local is disabled and powers are suppressed, and you'll get me to go back to Wentworths. As it is, I only go there for novelty's sake anymore. The same as exiting a mission through the door rather than the Exit button.
Adding a fee to /ah doesn't solve the issues. It just makes it annoying to use the command that people have paid real money to be able to use. If /ah had been free, I'd be indifferent to it, but I already paid for it once, with real money. -
Quote:Oh, sure, place the giant statue of the guy who was an incarnate of Zeus in the middle of Prometheus Park. That won't make Prometheus absolutely furious in any way whatsoever. Talk about a mythological error in judgement there. They could replace that statue with one of Prometheus, though. Just run it past the big blue guy first.I think that the best spot would be the generic hero statue in the middle of the lake in Prometheus Park - or if they wanted to go really big, replace the generic hero statue in Blyde Square.
As for where to put a Statesman Memorial, what about Independence Port? It's where he was hanging out for most of the time in the game, anyway. -
Quote:A Mecha is what you build when you want to show just how vastly superior your technology is to the opponent's. Simply to tell them that, yes, we did just tear up your conventional military with a giant humanoid target of a robot, and you were powerless to stop us. It's a scare tactic.I like the idea of Beam/Rad Corr personally. Not only does it fit thematically (what other energy source could actually power such an inefficient design), but it's mostly toggles and fire and forget abilities, and solid ones at that. Fairly solid.
Of course, what we get in CoH is powered armor in the shape of Mecha. Now human-sized humanoid robots is a whole other thing. That could actually be useful in a conventional army. More lifting strength, more carrying capacity, ability to carry heavy weapons easily, and still be able to go anywhere a human could, and even drive vehicles. And be painted hotrod red. To draw fire from the camo-wearing normal soldiers.
Beam/Rad does sound like it could be fun, and I don't have a decent Corruptor. -
Pretty much always. Sure, if I find a spot where I have the advantage due to positioning, I'm not moving until that is no longer the case, but that spot moves around pretty fast in most fights. It's part of why I like Hover. I'm not just positioning myself in 2D now, I'm positioning myself in 3D space.

Just in case you didn't know: /ignorespammer is not just for goldfarmer spam. It's intended to be used on ALL kinds of spam. Be it RP, macro spam, or anything you might find spammy, use it. You won't hear any more of it, and if enough people ignore someone as spammer, the spammer loses chat rights for a while.

Sharkhead Isle.
Why Sharkhead? Because every Villain more or less heads to Sharkhead at level 20, and Sharkhead is just... dull. It does have its moments, sure, but its main attraction is that it has a big hole in the ground. The content is also a bit lacking, or rather, it sued to be. You get out of Cap au Diable, which is a technology focused zone, with the giant model atom, the university, and of course Dr. Aeon. And then you step off the ferry into a labor dispute. Kind of a step down for a supervillain if you ask me.
Nw if you pick the right contacts, you'll instead begin to learn about the Leviathan, which is a step up from messing with Dr. Aeon, and the newer arcs, plus Diviner Maros are a good enough distraction to never need to go into that whole Cage Consortium thing. Which, to me, is the main problem with the zone. Cage and the Scrapyarders do not a compelling story make. At least not a supervillain story. Now if said villain were to incite the labor dispute and exploit the commotion for personal gains? That'd be better.
That and I kind of want to see the zone have a bit more feel of the Leviathan. I'd like to see the zone have this feel of "Something here is not right..." like a good horror story town. Maybe even have a place where the mining dug a little too deep and hit something. -
Quote:Jehuty might disagree. Lots of firepower on that one. It also does melee, of course, but it's mainly a ranged platform.Unfortunately for you, real Mecha heroes use swords. Only mooks that get killed off screen uses guns
Quote:Beam/Rad Corruptor.
Putting toggles on things doesn't make you put your gun away.
I'll need to see the pieces and powers all together, of course.
Maybe I should split up the ideas, since Retro Sci-Fi will come at some point. Now that's something that warrants a a zappy gun. -
Sadly, no oversized drills are available for Mechas to use. Otherwise I'd do that. Drill/Willpower Brute. Row, row! Fight the powah!
-
Price is not as much of a problem to me as it once was. I have a pretty nice Stalker build coming together, so when she's 50, I'll probably have a good character to run stuff with. Plus, I know Market-Fu, and Hero/Villain Merits take the worst sting out the cost, anyway.
I'll stick with the Beam/Energy thing for now, then. Munitions gets the LRM Rocket, right? Now that would be nice for a Mecha, at least in style. It's no Macross Missile Massacre, but it'll do.
Just waiting to see if Beam Rifle will get a discount when they release the Mecha. It'd be a very Marketing thing to do. -
Energy would be for Boost Range and Energy Punch to the face!
If I were to pick Devices, I'd probably got for a /Traps Corruptor instead. Getting the Forcefield Drone. But it's been a while since I did a Blaster, which is why I'm thinking it.
Slow single target set? I don't mind that. I played Stalkers before the buff before the one we just got and liked it fine. Don't get much more slow, single target than that.
