  1. You can increase the size of your text in the chat windows (and related tabs) in the main options menu. Be warned though that this WILL NOT change the size of the text in the nav window, mission objectives window, CS/BM window, etc. but you could try making the windows completely opaque and see if that helps at all when using smaller text.
  2. You forgot to mention the thesaurus. Probably the most powerful hero naming tool ever created. You can find all manner of cool one word names just by looking up synonyms and antonyms for a given word. A good example is my Ice/Ice blaster. I was looking for a really cool name that would announce his powerset so I went to the thesaurus and started searching under cold. Found frozen under cold and thought that fit my character concept better so I searched under frozen, this led to icebound which still fit my character concept but wasn't quite what I was looking for in a character name. Frigid was listed under icebound and it caught my eye so I searched under frigid and found frost-bound. Now that was what I was looking for, it was very cool sounding and suggested a person with ice powers that were both a blessing and a curse. It also gave my bio a real comic flourish at the end!

You can also go with a running theme. My wife plays CoH and she came up with the name Bloody Elle back during beta. Since that time she has reused Elle for any number of characters. A Fire/Rad controller called Crucibelle, a Jean Grey homage FF/Psy defender called Marvelle, an Invy/Fire tanker called Cinderelle, an Invy/Stone tanker called Minerelle, a Sonic/Energy blaster called Rebel Elle. (Okay, not one word but you get the point.)
  3. Did the mother ships zip during the first invasion? I remember them hanging in the air ominously but I don't remember them moving at all.... probably too busy getting my butt handed to my first level character after I made the mistake of deleting all my beta test characters too eary. Still it was good fun!
  4. Hey folks, still spreading the gospel that is blaptrolling but I've hit a snag. I've turned like 3 or 4 people onto this guide and they all love their shiny new E3B's but one of my coworkers is too impatient for the SO payoff. I tried an Electric/Energy combo up to level 6 and the quicker start is apparent so I'm sure that's more up his alley. What I'm looking for now is a good build for the combo. Does anyone have one or a link to one done by others? Thanks!

Oh - one other change coming soon to the Training Room...

This was an idea taken right from this forum. Since Ice Armor has no Resistance, it's a zero sum sort of power set. In other words, you're hit or your not. Well, someone (I've forgotten who) suggested adding a Damage Debuff to one of the powers - and we did! Chilling Embrace gains the ability to debuff mob damage (though it's Recharge debuff is slightly slower now).

    [/ QUOTE ]

Sweet! I PM'ed CuppaJo with that idea to replace the defense buff in Invincibility. Well it didn't work out quite as I hoped but I'm happy to hear that our tanker brethren will benefit.
  7. Best of luck for your brother Jack. I'll light a candle for him.
  8. Name: Crash MacTavish
    Powers: INV/AXE
    Origin:

James "Crash" MacTavish has always had an affinity for metal. He started his career as a metalworker but after a few years he fulfilled his lifelong dream to become a master swordsmith. He travelled the world plying his trade at knife shows and renaissance fairs and soon found that his weapons were high demand from serious collectors. With his weapons demanding higher prices he was able to stop his global trek and opened a forge in Paragon City where he began experimenting with advanced alloys and cutting edge tempering techniques and supplying weapons for the burgeoning hero population.

There was an explosion while working with an experimental ultra-hard alloy and Crash was caught in the blast. He lost both of his arms and his right eye in the explosion and his enitre body was peppered with bits of molten alloy. He was rushed to the hospital where his injuries were treated but was not expected to survive owing to the toxicity of some of the compunds in the alloy with which he had been working.

Amazingly his body was somehow able to metabolize the alloy fragments and as they were broken down they were absorbed into his skin making it nearly indestructible. Crash recuperated quickly and left the hospital sporting an eyepatch and prosthetic arms. Despite his traumatic experience Crash returned to work at his forge but found that his disability made his work impossible. Crash's hero clientele used their clout and influence to secure a pair of cybernetic arms and a cybernetic eye for Crash. With his new arms Crash was able to return to work and perfected the alloy upon which he had been working when he lost his arms. He forged a single weapon from this alloy, a two bladed axe and then laid down his hammer for good.

Inspired by the heroes who had so readily helped him, Crash took up his axe to defend those in need and even though he does not consider himself a superhero he is always willing to stand side by side with any hero against injustice. Crash has upgraded his arms twice and his eye once and has had cybernetic implants installed in his legs as well allowing him to jump great distances. His affinity for metal appears to have grown into a fetish for cybernetic augmentation as he is always on the lookout for the next latest upgrade. Crash has always had a self-assured personality but his newfound invulnerability has given him a towering self-confidence with an ego to match and he frequently speaks of himself in the third person. These appear to be more helpful than harmful as his confidence is infectious and his magnanimous nature makes him an extremely likable fellow.

Some one PM'ed me about this issue - and I've talked about Defenders a bit at conventions - so I thought I'd at least post something on them.

Basically, we've already committed to looking at several Archetypes and builds for I5 and afterwards, but I've said nary a word about Defenders. Why? Because of all the Archetypes, we're happiest with them. There are certainly issues with individual sets and powers - and those we're always looking at. Defenders, however, don't have any overarching problems.

BUT....I'm extremely concerned about the perception that Defenders "aren't needed" and thus "can't find a team" at high levels. Defenders should fill a valuable role at ALL levels and help Archetypes achieve levels that they can't reach by themselves. After all, Defenders are all about buffs (and debuffs). Every Archetype should be extremely happy when the Defender provides a resistance or defense buff...

Anyway, just wanted to post our view on Defenders right now.

    [/ QUOTE ]

I'm concerned about the "aren't needed" comment here Jack. You yourself have said that every archetype should be able to solo and the idea that a defender should be "needed" kind of flies in the face of that ideal.

On teams I can understand the "need" for each arcehtype. I myself prefer to run in pentads that way everyone has a job, knows their job and no one is stepping on anyone else's toes. I've found that these kinds of teams quickly find their rhythm and as a result are usually great fun!

Maybe adding the pentad to PVE might go a long way toward making all of the archetypes feel needed. Add a small XP bonus for pentads as incentive and see what happens. This would probably be a much more popular resolution than changing powersets. Just a thought....

To be honest, this is the second time someone has mentioned that I seemed like in a bad mood. Sorry about that - I really wasn't. In fact, it was my birthday that week and Philly is my hometown. My only stress was family related!

Pure poetry! I think it's the delivery more than anything else that impresses me about this classic example of doomsaying. I keep getting this picture of some executive in his office, with his feet up, dictating to his assistant.

    [/ QUOTE ]

It's funny how even the most well written, seemingly intelligent rants I've seen around here still falls into the classic blunder of "I feel this way, therefore everyone else does too. Thus thousands of people are leaving in droves simply because I am unhappy."

    [/ QUOTE ]

He also starts waving his checkbook in Statesman's face which has always been a sign of desperation to me.

Concept, there are those of us out there that don't choose powers based on min/max equations. I don't mean to sound harsh but it seems rather unfair to make decisions about the game and powers based on how min/maxers and powergamers are going to react.

[/ QUOTE ]Not really. In fact arguments of balance aren't for the min/maxers. A min/maxer will simply take the best choice and be happy with it being the best. Balance is important for those people who don't min/max, so they can be close to as powerful as their min/maxing brethern, without having to worry about all of the math.

In fact, if you want to get a good idea of what is balanced and what is not, min/maxers are the perfect place to look. They're like the canaries of this game, finding what's unbalanced long before the casual player gets around to it.

    [/ QUOTE ]

While what you said is true I still feel it's wrong for developer decisions to be made based on how one particular group of the player base will react. The idea that something like supersonic flight would make the other travel powers useless is true only of min/maxers and powergamers and therefore isn't taking the gaming community as a whole into consideration.
  22. [ QUOTE ]
Sounds like this player has invested in 4 powers - 3 of which he choose, and most of which he has probably slotted more than 6, and he still cannot fly. How much more of an investment did he make compared to your 1 power? How much did he have to give up compared to you and he still cannot go vertical.

No matter how you slice it, flying is ultimately safer than super speed, and offer an undeniable vertical advantage over super speed (or in this case, 4 other speed powers). If flyspeed had the same max as runspeed, why would anyone ever take superspeed?

    [/ QUOTE ]

Concept, there are those of us out there that don't choose powers based on min/max equations. I don't mean to sound harsh but it seems rather unfair to make decisions about the game and powers based on how min/maxers and powergamers are going to react.

Just because a supersonic flight power exists does not mean that I would choose it for every character. Heck, Super Jump is about the coolest travel power in the game with it's speed, maneuverability, vertical component and the fact that it's just plain fun. But folks are still choosing the others. Flight, despite it's shortcomings is pretty popular. Even the clunky teleport has it's supporters. So despite the good, the bad and the ugly, folks are still using the powers and powersets that they want.

I don't think y'all should dismiss the idea of adding Supersonic Flight as a fifth power for the Flight pool or even replace Group Fly with it. You could give it a greater endurance drain and make it impossible to attack while it is active or better yet give it an altitude limitation. Basically Supersonic Flight can only be used above a certain altitude for safety reasons.

    Pulp?

    [/ QUOTE ]

The recent movie 'Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow' is a fair replica of the pulp genre. So is almost anything with a title involving a character name, a scenario, and an exclamation point at the end:

Doc Savage and the Prehistoric Island!
The Man of Bronze visits the Spook Hole!
    ...and so on.

Initial pulp novels usually centered around a single, mostly superhuman protagonist, though these were all what City Of Heroes would consider 'natural'. Superhero stories involving other types of heroes also got their start around this time in comics.

It is characterized by a generally rosy outlook sociologically - the hero is pretty much guaranteed to win, science will eventually triumph over all ills, and such. Science often plays a large role in stories but it is often painted with a very broad brush: The 'Power of The Atom' did it!

Incidentally, I've always been amused by the parallels with Doc Savage and Superman. Doc Savage is The Man of Bronze, and occasionally retires to his Fortress of Solitude, whose location nobody else knows, but at which he keeps some of the greatest marvels known to man. Heh.
