  2. If you use the less saturated colors available, the DA toggles become more transparent.

Somewhere I have a screen shot of my /DA scrapper where I used a bold color for the tenticly part of death shroud, and a very pale one for the other, resulting in a nice tenticle effect without so much of the cloud.

Works pretty well to thin out the rest of the effects as well. It's possible to render the CoF skulls translucent to the point of irrelevancy.

    Just takes some playing around.

I will buy TW as soon as it goes live and reroll two different tanks with it.

I can only imagine it is devastating on both Scrappers and Brutes.
Hmm. Are the attacks in the same spots for tanks? A t1 cone on a tank might be very interesting!

Hasten's other use could be for stacking AD for lovely DDR.

It's not a huge deal, it just means you'll have to double stack it to be able to softcap all positions, but it should be more that feasible.

Your ranged defense is going to be key versus energy damage, and you can probably get away with less AoE defense. That's how I built my BS/DA scrapper and I rarely notice the fact that my AoE isn't softcapped (it's still at 43% though)
True enough. I also wonder what's going to end up being "skippable" once the beta is all said and done. Probably not DS, but the set does seem ... cumbersome .. with all the attacks taken. Maybe it's just because I'm used to skipping at least one, sometimes two attacks on high lvl builds?

I know that's a tough question with TW/ not even being 'build-able' yet, but I'd like to hear any suggestions folks might have!

@ClawsandEffect: Interesting -- that leads me into asking a couple of general questions about how to build with "parry" type attacks in builds...

    1. I'm pretty sure I'm going Brute. If I do, I'm going for the high-defense M/R/A build you guys recommended, but... should I be aiming to get my Melee defense numbers as high as possible (maybe softcapped or close) /before/ popping Defensive Sweep, or am I aiming to just get it to a decent number that I can pop up to softcap with an application of Defensive Sweep?

    2. I'm pretty positive that I won't be able to tank if I DO go scrapper. If I did: Should I still bother softcapping to positionals on a scrapper or would it be better to focus on things like recharge and damage over defensive bonuses?
I think the tw/fa thread is using dual blades as a closer analog for slotting choices. I haven't built /DA for positional, but I know that you'd likely want gaussian's in BU, and may need to take a PPP pet for the set that gives nice ranged/aoe def bonuses, can't recall which it is though. If TW/ cones take pbAoe, not targeted Aoe sets, then obliterations and scirocco's are going to help with def bonuses as well. For armors, I think Aegis has a def bonus in there, but I don't remember to what off the top of my head.

You'd have to build to 34% melee to cap with 1 application of DS, 23% if you planned on stacking it twice. That assumes one can't/doesn't enhance the def value from the power.

Having said all of that; /DA with 32.5% def is VERY STURDY (I only have one that is s/l/n/e at that value, can't speak for positional). "Small purple" to softcap is a very nice place to be and tends to involve less inf and slotting comprimise than trying to completely softcap.

    Edit:

The VIP beta is open, right? Like we can discuss it in threads like this?

    This. Probably.

Defensive Sweep gives a smashing/melee def bonus so maybe take a cue from the katana/broadsword builds that build for m/r/a defense.

On that note, your kinetic combats and reactive armors are great if you are doing a typed defense build, but if you switch to positional, then you'll want some other sets.

Death shroud is WAY underslotted. The amount of dmg over time that comes from a brute dmg aura is, well, staggering. Don't forget the Theft of Essence proc in Dark regen, aside from that it just needs recharge and accuracy really.

That said, I have a sp/da scrapper that is built for typed defense and does fine on trials without being softcapped to e/ne dmg. I think he's sitting at 32-33% for s/l and e/ne, which is 1 small purple from the regular softcap, and plenty sturdy.
  9. Anyone know how this proc works?

    According to the wiki:

    Quote:
This enhancement provides a 20% chance to slow your target by 25%
Current mids reads that it grants "-25%(Enhancement:RechargeTime) to Self for 20 secs (20% chance in PvE)"

Which direction does this go in game? Also, in a toggle, does it follow the standard 1 fire/10s?

The really interesting thing is that the fury bars of all the characters in question are at roughly the same point and have different bonus amounts, which is what made me think there was a problem somewhere in the first place.

At the moment, I'm inclined to think there's a bug somewhere, but I don't know where or why. I don't have enough data to conclusively say something is broken, but it does look that way to me so far.
These things aren't really my forte', but I started monitoring the damage bonus and the bar on my sj brute out of curiosity. Not very scientific, but I'm seeing similar numbers. Haven't done a direct comparison with any other similar level brutes though.
  11. There's enough difference between lvl 50 SO's and common IO's that a great deal of your slotting is going to slap you into the ED cap pretty hard. Others with the numbers committed to memory will be able to help more specifically, but basically with Recharge you can get roughly similar numbers with 2 IOs as you can with 3 SOs. Lower to be sure, but since you aren't after bleeding edge performance, the difference is pretty minimal. I am certain though, that the 3rd IO is mostly wasted in most cases.

I don't think you need to worry about the to-hit enh in Rage, but since I have no experience with SS, I can't really speak to that, just a gut feeling.

Drop presence, consider Soul Mastery for Gloom and DN. Slot them both up. Since you don't have the option of taking shadow meld and aren't building defense bonuses rolling around with the -to-hit would be a nice bump in survivability.

Hypothetically speaking, nrg mastery might be overkill if you properly slot of endredux, which it looks like you've got under control. Max rechage as much as you can, especially in your secondary. You'll live and die by those.

    Consider the following:

    Tough and Weave.

Leadership pool if you keep energy mastery.

Burnout. Yes it has a stupidly long recharge. Yes it has a crazy endurance penalty. But it will allow you to do lots of interesting things with regen clicks, like back to back MOG or stacking Dull Pain.

Not on a Mids machine at the moment, but this idea is interesting to me so I'll probably take a deeper look. Finally, you'll get lots of nay-sayers telling you to skip regen, especially without sets. Meh to all that. If you're having fun with it, go for it.

Would be an interesting experiment to see this combo on pure commons or just SOs.

Yeah, that actually sounds familiar. Makes sense too. "With weapon" animations for all the various permuations of secondaries, probably not going to happen.

Redraw still makes me a sad panda though. At least there are enough things to do with minimal amounts, or none at all.

    This.

I have no idea how redraw affects numerical performance, but I find it so aesthetically displeasing that I won't play set combos that invoke it at all.

I guess there is some sort of <difficult coding problem> that prevents getting rid of redraw completely, but I still *really* wish it would go away.

In a sense what I want to try is to get enough passive regeneration that it equals a fully saturated RttC when instant healing is not in use. Essentially I do not want to use instant healing unless I just absolutely have to. While I have seen how most folks say get as much recharge as you can that does not do a whole lotta good when we have so much -recharge right now. Its to the point where red side is just a freaking death sentence for any regen. This build I am trying work on will be for hero only brutes that will do most end game stuff aside from the incarnate trials. So you guys think this will be a waste of time or even possible?
A lot of that math has already been done with scrappers here:

    http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=260718

Unless you are dead set on skipping iTrials; Rebirth +regen side == significant amounts of time spent at the regen cap. Okay, so that's sort of cheating in terms of builds.

Either way, recharge is your friend. Stacking dp in beta was pretty interesting, though I'm not sure how to get there without burnout. Haven't really settled on a combo yet though, was hoping stj/ would be out sooner rather than later :/
  16. Late to the party as usual, but here's another vote *against* merging the AT forums. Likely lots of repetition from what's already been posted, but here's my train of thought:

Merging will increase bloat: People already post the same question over and over in the Brute forum, adding that to the Tanker forum will just lead to it being more difficult to find anything for *both* sets of players and increase question repetition.

Similarly, I'm not sure a dedicated "Builds & Discusson" forum is a good idea either. It would invite lots of duplication of info as builds will end up posted both in their AT (or playstyle) forum and in the build forum itself.

It won't improve usability: Honestly, I can't think of a simpler layout than by AT name, add the "playstyle" descriptor if you must, but I'm in the camp that doesn't really care for those catgories either. Which brings me to...

This. Seriously. In addition to being unique, many of them are quite versatile. One of the draws of this game for me has been, since the begining, that it does not conform to the "trifecta" playstyle in so many MMO games. I know the playstyle categories don't affect gameplay, technically, but they will impact how a new player views the AT they choose. It would make me a sad panda to see an army of new Brutes who don't max fury because they think they aren't a "DPS" class. Or corrs that ignore their secondary because they are supposed to be Ranged Damage. Or for that matter Blasters that do the same because they are ranged, so why take all those melee attacks? Okay, so that last one was overly dramatic.
  17. I was pretty happy with the level-bumped and half-IO'd bs/regen for the short amount of time I was able to spend fiddling with him. Recharge debuffs are still pretty killer if they get high enough. I didn't get close to capping HP in any normal way, but interestingly burn-out let me stack applications of DP and hitting the HP cap. Not that it lasted long. Of course no accolades and not full on +hp from sets and the like. Was running +2x4 (not a huge deal, I know) with pretty much no issues. Also with no DN running, so there is added potential there. I also didn't really see a noticable loss in fury from rolling through the click defenses. Maybe some numbers gurus could figure out the max potential HP for a regen brute?

I'm torn though as I'm a little too stoked on doing either kat/fire or bs/fire when i21 goes live. I might just wait for StJ before starting the regen brute. We'll see though. Pretty stoked on the idea of ss/regen just for kicks.

Either way, probably retiring the km/regen scrapper once I start /regen on a brute. Conversely probably redoing the wm/sd brute as a scrapper.

Heh. Go figure. I've gotten caught in the trap of shying away from secondaries that don't boost damage.

It remains the same though - got to be into the playstyle just like you do on a scrapper. Adding brute resists and hp doesn't change the reliance on timing and recharge that is just the way the set is.

  19. I'd been holding off on doing a sword/fire scrappy, mostly out of having too many other toons as it is.

BS/Fire brute is very likely to happen ...

    ... depending on TW/
  20. A few quick notes, bear in mind I just looked over the post not in MIDS.

-- 5 slot DW in healing flames. You want the recharge, and the heal value from that set is solid.

-- Consider using dmg sets instead of endmod in DC/Consume. Use pieces from MockingB to focus on recharge and I think it gets you close to the ed cap. Needs more Acc/Dmg though. You'll get plenty of end from it unslotted save for the rare instance you are only fighting one target. If that is going to be something you do a lot, then slot DC more like an attack and Consume for end mod.

-- You can probably drop the 3rd slot from stamina.

-- I'm not a fan of shadow maul, but you might be. If you aren't in the "I love this power" camp, I'd suggest dropping it.

-- 4 slot another reactive armor in tough

-- Consider 3 slotting Weave, End redux is the priority, although it doesn't hurt to add more def to it either.

-- 3 slotting Eradication and Cleaving Blow instead of Oblit will give you a nice energy/neg energy defense bonus. You'll want that, lots of pure energy attacks in post-50 stuff.

-- Get more slots in MG and SL - those are your two heavy hitters. Slot SL as an attack, you'll be using it in your main attack chain so it doesn't need +heal.

-- I'm not sold on Gaussian's in Soul Drain. I'd have to look at the numbers though, but Gaussian's is much better for positional defense than for typed. You want typed.

-- Gloom: Awesome. Darknest Night: I hear is also great. I was unimpressed with Dark Oblit. You'll be spamming burn and ripping through your attack chain with decent recharge (not even uber recharge). Dropping Dark Oblit for something that needs fewer slots will help you slot up other things. I might be wrong about that though, it could be a great attack that I've not used enough to realize it.

    Also, FE+SD+Burn == Winning.
  21. Can't really think of a reason they would change either set, save Confront --> Taunt.

Sure, the academic discussion is midly interesting. XX can do it fastest. XX can do it just on SOs. Whatever.

I'm hard pressed to think of a brute that *couldn't* mop up rikti at x8 with even just a basic investment in the build.

Re: Rikti and /DA. The lower resist to energy just isn't a problem in this scenario. Spines/da/blaze just destroys rikti (no claims to speed or efficiency, just survivability) without really much trouble at all. There are much harder mobs for /DA than rikti. I'm looking at you PPD Squids. :P
  23. TW/ definitely. Brute and Scrapper versions for certain. Not sure on secondaries, but likely not anything terribly clicky to avoid redraw (bothers me aesthetically). TW/SR, TW/Elec, or TW/Fire are brute combos I'm considering. TW/SR or TW/EA for the scrapper versions. Likely the latter since I want an /EA scrapper anyway.

/Regen Brute. Not the TW most likely (see above). SJ might be appealing, though likely to be either SS or SM.

I'm curious about /time so I'll give it a go. I don't tend to get very far with support/ranged toons, but I still want to check it out. Having said that, I was getting into my dark/elec defender recently so who knows. Maybe it's time for a diversion from melee.
