I run a Spines/Dark/Blaze who has all of 1 "melee" attack in his chain. If you can call Ripper a melee attack.
Fire Blast, Ripper, Throw Spines are really all you need at decent recharge - especially if you are using Spine Burst and Fireball as well. Current in game build doesn't have Impale (I know, sacrilige, but since I can blast almost twice in the time of an impale cycle ...) and Lunge is just there to hold a KC.
2 dmg auras are the bomb. As /elec you would have less endurance problems than other spines/XX/"not body mastery" builds.
I will say it seems counter intuitive, but a ranged scrapper is fun as hell and has no trouble with those inevitable broken will runners. Do it, it's awesome fun. -
Self Indulgent Update:
Tried this theory out with t1 musc and t1 ageless in a sp/da/blaze build. I can see where this would work (even without the Bod pool) at higher tiers. Does anyone know if EndMod from Musculature Radial has an effect on the ageless recovery buff? Just curious.
The downside is loosing the extra resistence from Cardiac and purposely not taking Barrier. In a perfect world I would have all 4 and be able to go between the offensive and defensive configs.
I'll post another build soon, if only for my own edification. -
Quote:Well, combining position and s/l doesn't really gain you much; they are mutually exclusive rather than additive.MayorOfAngrytown, thanks for the help. I got the basics, Im just a mess with numbers about softcap, archetypes, etc...
For my MA/FA I was interested in positional and S/L defense.
I got F/C basicly covered with fire amor and its not that important to me.
I will take a look, maybe I can slot rectified reticle in build up.
Thanks everyone for the comments!
Generally you'd want to build for typed (s/l, the e/ne) or positional defense (melee et al).
Usually I see (with exceptions) builds on resistence sets go the "typed" line rather than positional because it's more slot effecient.
I've tried a few times to soft cap positional defense on things like DA or ELE or FAand just can't get there.*
* - At a budget level realistic for me, haven't tried at "no holds barred" budget levels. -
Quote:I'd suggest having Mids, if only to open builds you find on the forums. Reading them in posts doesn't give you all the numbers, also most of the elite builders around here just drop data chunks, which you need to use Mids to get anything out of anyway.I dont use mids.
Gotta say I dont understand very well about defense types and numbers.
I usually just take a look at builds at forums, and I see what I can buy and what can I improve to get nice bonus...
Shame on me, playing this game for such a long time, and only few months ago started with sets, so Im not an expert
Also, I dont see any MA/FA builds, since is a very rare combo.
http://paragonwiki.com/wiki/Defense
Not sure if this is the best link, but check out the beginning of the article where it talks about "Attack Tags."
All (with a few exceptions) attacks are coded as either being Melee, Ranged, or Area of Effect. There is a defense to each of these, called collectively "Positional Defense"
Additionally, all (with exceptions) attacks are also tagged by type. Smashing, Fire, Negative, etc. These are called "Typed" defense.
When you are attacked the game looks at the attack and says, "Hey someone just threw a firey boulder at you. That is a Ranged attack with a Smashing and Fire damage type"
Then game then takes your *highest* defense value (Ranged, or Smashing, or Fire) and uses that to determine the hit roll. It is important to note that they don't combine in any way.
Because positional defense bonuses tend to come from the 6th slot in sets, most people without a ton of defense in their armor set (like fire) will build for typed defense. Specifically S/L first since that covers a wide variety of attacks. -
Quote:Here's my opinion as another person who just can't do /SD with a non-weapon primary (secondary for you tankers). Captain America or not, it's just goofy. Tried several. Can't do it. Mental Block. :P<<snip>>
I am debating over these power sets and could use some advice. Honestly, I want to just enjoy a well rounded hero. I don’t need to be the best, but I want to feel like a hero and just enjoy the fun. Oh, I should add in that I mostly solo.
I’m looking for good damage (ST and AoE), strong def and I MUST be able to build a concept around him or I just can’t play him.
<<snip>>
Some more babbling – I can’t get into shield unless it’s with a sword. I’ve tried DM/SD a couple times, but for some reason I lose interest… a concept gap for me.
So, the never ending question…. “Your opinions please?”
Thanks in advance!
What you are seeking is a Mace/Shield brute: All the fun of a sword and board scrapper, without Broadsword (you mentioned you prefer Kat), a kick-*** t9 AoE attack, extra base HP (making TG and OWTS +hp bonuses more effective), and a variety of concepts to wrap him around. The only thing this really lacks is a self heal, and that can be taken care of as well. (Nothing against broadsword - I happen to like it - just noting the differences).
Will scrapper Shield Charge make you jealous? Maybe. Truth be told I never notice the gap on teams with /SD scrappers or tanks. The pseudo-pet cap may rob a Brute of a little of SC glory, but rolling Fury + saturated AAO is nothing to sneeze at either. Especially on a high recharge WM attack chain. No, you won't pump out ST DPS like a dm/sd scrapper. No you won't farm like an SS/FA brute. You'll slot nicely in the middle of those though. -
Wait. You found a p/u team goldside?? Impressive!
Too bad about the noob though; most of the time this sort of thing is just funny to me, but then I've never actually been kicked in a situation like that. I think my favorite was the guy who insisted that we were doing the wrong WST, even after we finished, got our bonus xp, double merits, and the 50s got their Notices.
Heh. One other person on the team and I tried to explain it several times and eventually just gave up. -
Quote:Ya, I want to say -60%, but it might be 50. TBH, with the option of up to 3 perf shifters and various end management iPowers, there are various ways to mitigate it. No worse than the hasten crash really, since it is much less often.Doesnt it have -50% end though? Dont like the idea of that every few minutes.
Anyway, yes OwtS isnt affected by any form of +rech.
Having said that, I'm definitely dropping Ageless for Rebirth on my shielder, and already running Spiritual. If I added hasten to the build (currently doesn't have it) then it would be a bigger deal.
Never thought of it that way, but also true. -
I go back and forth. I have it on a wm/sd brute, and the +430 or so hp (oddly slotted with 1 heal io for the time being, also spiritual core t4, a couple of the accolade +hp bonuses and true grit with a bit of +hp slotting) is hard to give up. The resists are nice as well.
On the one hand it seems like overkill; on the other it's nice for those moments when that overkill is aiming for your face fast and hard.
If I can still fit it in the next build for that character, I'll keep it - sort of depends on how incarnate options pan out. -

Quote:You don't build fury from "having mobs around you" directly; but the condition of being surrounded is good for fury.Is this something they added recently? I don't remember it and there's nothing on Paragon Wiki about it.
Also, with some (relatively recent, but not the kind in your question) changes, it's basically academic for just about any brute to maintain 50-70% fury without expending much effort. -
Quote:This. My guess is that they believe the interface stacking limit acts to moderate this properly.
I'm not sure that's correct. Actually, I'm not sure the stacking limit really moderates this as it should in high-rate attacks, and I'm not sure the stacking limit is what its supposed to be for the damage part of reactive regardless. I haven't had a chance to test this carefully, and its tricky to test, but I'm not convinced the DoT follows the same limit as the debuff.
I'm betting the answer is somewhere in here with respect to what's happening in rains; though it may be that it's hitting the limit, then one is ending and instantly another is starting.
Either way, it's wacky - but I'm not convinced the 10s rule is the answer. -
And to think I was already having a hard time picking between the available powers for slots. Heh. Awesome.
Got to say though (tangent), stoked for the Steampunk stuff. -
Re: "Punching" characters get better salvage:
http://boards.cityofheroes.com/showthread.php?t=259449
DuoLAM and they both get Uncommons.
Seems to imply a randomness once the salvage participation point has been reached. As in, if the type of reward were participation based, they both should have gotten R/VR since they were the only participants. Of course until more people are knocking these out it's hard to tell.
It could be something as stupid as a streak problem for those that seem stuck in uncommons for long stretches, but I'd like to think it's not as simple as that. -
I love this thread; there is some great general build advice happening along with some nice insight to how some of the more elite builders approach the process (Thanks Werner, Arcana, et all for sharing)
Quote:Another great tidbit above. As an extention to this note, something that helped me a few times.. Work to hit your first goal and then see what other things you ALSO picked up along the way. You can use one of those to decide what to do for a secondary objective.
I'm not sure if this helps you or not Calvin, but MIDS will let you setup alternate slotting for a given power. Then you can flip between the two and check out the different effects. I'd like to think this helps me in some way.
Like Werner's suggestion for swapping Doctored Wounds for Numinas, or for deciding what peices give you the nicest enhancement without regards to set bonuses. Say for example you are only slotting 3 or 4 pieces of a set. With alternate slotting in MIDS you can see the different enchancement numbers for different combinations. -
Quote:I've only got two Incarnates at the moment, a scrapper and a brute. Aside from a lucky string of Rares on my scrappers first several trials, my experience has been pretty much that random is random.See, I'm the opposite. My scrappers are the ONLY ones that have gotten above Uncommon yet.
I've done a trial where I thought I totally failed (lots of deaths, getting lost in the grenade warehouse, whatever) and pulled a VR. I've also done them completely on point, some of my best gameplay (which, in the grand scheme is probably still not all that good) and gotten commons. On both toons.
Admittedly I can't speak for the "I've done 200 trials each on 6 different ATs" crowd - but it seems pretty random to me. -
BA; I know you've posted those screenies before, but those are two very sweet looking costumes you got there.
As far as the making a costume and then wanting to play it, yeah sitting on a couple of those at the moment. Not sure what to do with them though. Heh. -
As someone who returned to the game not so long ago, I'll vote Shield for all the reasons above, and to top it off if you haven't had a shielder of some kind or another, then you need one. Nao.

Quote:/Cold corr's are great, and people are on the verge of realizing how good a dm/fire brute can get, happen to really like mine.Seriously, thanks for all the well wishes. Most appreciated.
Yeah, I will definitely give the Fire/Cold thing a shot. Probably gonna roll a couple others too, as I get 2 weeks off after I get home, I'll have time to play. Looking at a DM/FA Brute and maybe a Arch/TA Corr. I've been CoH Jones'n for quite a while and I've saved up a few names and concepts during what little off time I've had.
I play on Liberty and Freedom, Residentx10, so I'll keep that in mind. Thanks much!
Also, WM/SD brutes are a load of fun once they get past a couple of hurdles.
Either way, welcome back and thanks for Serving! -
Quote:This.Well, these rain powers might be quite nice when soloing but that doesn't really seem to be the case when teaming. Sure you let that rain power keep going off for a while and that mob will be dead. But when you are teaming other attacks likely have already killed the mob before any insane massive dmg was dealt, not to mention team members might have their own reactive going off which means targets are capped out even without that rain power sometimes.
Competing reactives on a team, while still rediculous dmg output, do seem to be a limiter of a sort.
I ran the T3 75% dmg only version in sp/da auras on a team with a couple people with Rain of Fire and seemed like I was pretty drown out. The rains were stacking way too fast, not that it made much difference who's DOT's were melting those silly mindwashed goons.
I was wondering if anyone addressed this during the UStream; not much of a definitive though, heh. -
Quote:I thought about Rebirth, but with the amount of recharge I'm looking at in Dark Regen, I pretty much have heals covered; Endurance is the big issue for this character. Ageless +rec would cover that, but then I loose the extra resistance from Cardiac. So it's sort of Offense (Ageless/Musc) vs. Defense (Barrier/Cardiac).Any reason why your looking into Barrier more than Rebirth +regen for your scrapper?
Also having a bit of trouble getting to a defense number I like for s/l (since I can't afford that pesky pvp +def unique), which makes Barrier appealing.
To make it tougher, my in game build still runs /blaze; having hard time giving up the fun factor for the more sensible /body.
Really the only certainty on this toon was Interface; t4 Reactive Radial got slotted last night. Epic Sea of Tiny Numbers.
Haven't even started thinking about Lore yet.
Much more straightfoward on my wm/sd brute: Spiritual core/Pyronic radial /Rebirth +regen/Seers Radial/Reactive Radial (might switch to the -regen one). -

@Negami; Do it.
Nalrok, thanks for writing this!
One data point which may or may not be of use; Marauder seems to be stunnable with Soul Transfer. Of the couple times I've used it near him, I've seen him stunned with it once, but only for a split second. Other times he might have been Enraged.
Either way, ST is made of awesome and bacon. Even the sound effect is awesome.
I also found the health drain from OG to be minimal with decent regen or even a little bit of +hp from sets. On the other hand, it's too annoying to keep around even on a scrapper. Maybe it's just my combo though. The slows from spines make things run around enough as it is, I don't need the added wandering from the stun. Also, I kinda feel like CoF is more useful as a To-Hit debuff than as a fear (nice side effect), but as this is a dark/dark guide it's already packing plenty of debuff and it can be stacked with ToF which iirc is a higher mag than the cloak? -
Quote:Yeah, I had those mids numbers in my head when I took blaze on a scrapper - then saw the damage in game as roughly half of what mids reports.Ok, that explains alot.
Now I can stop freaking out about the numbers an SD scrapper would get for Fireball.
Still so much freaking fun. I could probably have a "better" build without it, but having a hard time dropping it because of the fun factor. Sort of the opposite problem. I want to go for the performance, but having the blast/fireball is so much fun. -
