I did find one interesting facet of the whole issue though. If the last <int> in the wdw option is set to 8 on many windows the functional part of the window is removed and the window becomes locked to it's position. Not sue what use could be made of that, though it does remove some of the UI bloat.
The command works just fine when used in a manner that supports it. Otherwise.. I don't know why you'd be trying to open it anyway. It's common sense.

That window is included in the file because some people do have preference as to where the window is located on their screen, so I don't think it should be removed.. but I agree that maybe some errorchecking should be done first to ensure that when the command is used, that the user has already opened the window during that session and is near an AE interface (or has the accolade).

Using an 8 in the last position causes strange things to happen because it's not intended to have a value other than 2 (show) or 4 (hide). You're basically breaking the interface on purpose and then wondering why it looks strange.

When you are changing things that aren't necessarily supposed to be changed manually.. you're bound to find problems.

Well if your game account is going to be inactive.. then I suggest taking them down just in case you go over 60 days. If you are going to keep paying whiel you take your break.. then it wont matter.
  3. I just tried it and it took a few seconds to crash, and the screen is all screwed up. The entire user interface disappeared, but whatever text was on those windows still shows up. lol

    Edit:
I tried it inside an AE building and it still did the same thing.

By the way... I can see why the game would get confused.. that's the mission editing window. If you try pulling it up without using the actual AE interface first, it doesn't know what mission you are trying to edit, and just craps out.

If you had the mission editing window open at all during that game session, then the "/show MM" command works just fine... and if you have the Architect Comlink, you can use the command without being in an AE building as well.

As for editing the MM line in the wdw.txt file... I don't see why that would be a problem (unless maybe if you have the window maximized in-game and it's trying to position it elsewhere). I was able to adjust the position of it just fine a minute ago when I tested it.

I'm sure Gintoki and I would love to host something like this. I can also dual-log onto a villain and take over the boxes as we go around, so we can earn more points. (Just don't kill him when you see him! lol)

I would probably bring Tabby this time instead, and I haven't brought her to PvP before, so I don't know how well that would end up. I might need to work on that second build soon. haha

You can have only one Longbow Mech at a time, but if you use yours, you can go back to RV and get another if your team has over 1000 points before the zone resets.
This ^, except you are technically scored individually, not as a team.. though the team can earn certainly points together. If you start defeating turrets, and THEN form a team, it's possible for you to reach 1000 before everybody else. Likewise, if somebody joins a team late, it's possible for the whole team to earn 1000 except for that person. You can join and leave teams as many times as you want, and your individual score wont reset until the Dimensional Reversion or until you leave the zone.

You mainly earn points by defeating the turrets. Taking 6 boxes and winning the zone only gives you a little over 500 points though, so there would have to be Villains taking them over as well so you can keep going until you have enough points before finally winning the zone. You can also earn point by defeating other players and by taking out the AVs.

It's important to note that you don't get the Longbow Mech when you reach 1000, nor do you get it when either Hero or Villains win the zone. I don't think there is a way to lose points, and you can still earn the Mech even if our "side" didn't win the zone. You can still earn points once a winner is declared and the Mech is awarded to anybody with 1000 points once the Dimensional Reversion finally resets the zone a few minutes later.

It hasn't been possible at least as long as I've played this game, but I do recall some people mentioning it was possible upon release of the system.. and fixed shortly thereafter.

Personally, I'm wondering what affect Going Rogue will have on that system, if any..

Like I said, there is no other command for it..

So I guess the only other thing I can suggest might be to use trickery to close that window by adding something like this to your command string:

    $$wdwsavefilesilent wdwtemp$$gamereturn$$wdwloadfilesilent wdwtemp
I just tested it, and it seems to work just fine. The contact dialog is closed, and the rest of the UI is unchanged (though it may "flash" when it refreshes).

Note: There is no need to use a ".txt" extension on a filename you don't plan on opening outside of the game.

That window is the same as any other contact dialog window and can only be closed by clicking the red "x" in the corner of it, or by making a selection.

I suppose you can use /gamereturn or /window_close_extra as well, but that will also close other windows you might not want closed.

Well, I use the forum options and features the way they are designed, and it functions the way I expect them to. It's perfect for me anyway.

You're right, MCM.. it's silly that it doesn't seem to work right to begin with, but I don't know who you can contact about it either.

On a side note, I HATED the way the old forums worked. Many times if I was on a TF, or haven't browsed anything in a awhile, it would automatically mark everything as read, and it was annoying trying to sort through the unmarked threads. To prevent that, I simply had to go through EVERTYTHING before going to work, to the store, or starting a long event.

I'd much rather have a read post show up as unread, than an unread post show up as read. The new way is so much better (for me).

I read in another thread (by Master-Blade I think), that it possibly was related to just closing the browser, without logging out. Another advice was to 'mark forum as read' (when done of course) by double-clicking the forum icon.
Yeah. The feature is really strange. Sometimes it doesn't remember that you read the post unless you specifically clicked the "View last unread post" button to open the page.

Then, depending on circumstances, the "You last visited:" date/timestamp can be inaccurate from forum to forum.

The steps I take to prevent an issue:
    • I subscribe to the forums I frequently visit, and use my "User CP" as my forum bookmark.
    • I always use the "View last unread post" to view the thread.
    • I always use the "Forum Tools > Mark This Forum Read" option when I am done with a Forum and then click on "User CP" when I'm ready to move to the next forum.
    • I always use the "Quick Links > Make Forums Read" from my User CP area when I am about to close my browser or not browse it for any extended period of time. I specifically do it within the "User CP" area, because I've noticed it not always working correctly from within forums or threads.

Signing off isn't required. I might have made that statement before I fully streamlined my own browsing methods, or I mentioned it just as a suggestion to the people who my methods don't seem to work for. lol

It seems like a lot of work, but now the forums function perfectly for me, and I've gotten used to doing it that way.

    YMMV

That was advertised as a feature for Issue 12, but was found to be an April Fools joke.
  18. I did some quick searching and it seems that Twitter only gives the option for Upper-left and Tiling (for smaller images) and I found a How to Create a Twitter Background page that suggests using at least 1600x1200 and a Twitter Background Gallery page that suggests 1500x1300, which positron's picture complies with.

Then again, they also suggest not to design the background with information on the right side of the side bar.. which would be a flaw in Positron's image choice. (Or is it a flaw in Twitter's design for not having the Centered option? lol)

Either way, losing a couple characters depending on screen size isn't a huge deal, and it was fun talking about it. haha

1640 is a good medium. Anything smaller would create too much space on the right side for larger window sizes, and anything larger would make the actual page content cover Statesman completely on the smaller resolutions, so you're right, if it was centered, it'd work out better.

The CoH Homepage is built with the same size in mind, but the background image IS actually centered. I'm not familiar enough with Twitter to know whether or not a Centered background image is an option, or if it's an option that Positron might have overlooked when setting it up... but that's probably what was intended, and why that size was used. In that case, the only flaw is that it didn't end up getting centered.

But let's not circle all the way back.
The average website that most people would visit is designed at a fixed width between 960 and 1000 pixels. The size of the window doesn't make the content appear any differently. Having the screen maximized or not is simply a matter of preference, and is usually the default. The background image on the Twitter page is obviously designed to replace the extra space you would normally see on the sides with something friendly to any average viewing size.

On a 1680 screen, the readable post area is ~1280 pixels, equaling roughly 137 picas... which is a fair bit larger than a recommended reading width of 18-24 picas for a 10pt font (which is what would seem to be the width of the textarea for posting is).

Anyway, we could probably talk round and round on this. All I'm saying is that to the average person, maximizing a fluid-width forum is probably going to be uncomfortable to read over long periods of time. Everyone has their own thresholds for things though, and there isn't any one right or wrong way. I was speaking more in terms of generalities.
And the average person doesn't spend most of their time on fluid-width forums anyway, and the discussion was sparked by the size of a background image on a site that isn't fluid-width either.
  22. Sure.. I'll bring MB or Tabby.

Anyway, that's above and beyond what this thread is about.
Directly comparing reading on the internet to reading a newspaper isn't accurate either.

The article you pointed me to specifically mentions the use of Book typography in their measurements, which "do not necessarily apply to magazine or newspaper typography." While the shorter columns may indeed help reduce eyestrain over a long period of time, it is not the reason why they are written that way.

It's not very common for websites to use the full screen width for text anyway. There is almost always some kind of sidebar or image displayed on the side, making the reading width shorter. The optimal line width is relative to the size of the text, the distance the text is from the eye, and the preference and experience of the person reading it. Experienced readers will suffer less eyestrain over time. Also, browsers are now equipped with zoom tools that increase text size and makes reading text on a higher resolutions even easier for some people.

Either way, you asked me how I don't get eyestrain..
My monitor is slightly elevated at over 2 feet away from my eye. The relative angle of my viewing area is reduced. I didn't do it to reduce eyestrain. It's just the way my desk happens to be designed, and I happen to never get eyestrain.

Your comment that "The human eye isn't meant to scroll that far without causing strain." is relative to the size and position of your screen, not the resolution. If I hold a book at a comfortable reading distance from my face, with the monitor behind it at my average viewing distance, they appear roughly the same size. If I had any eyestrain, it'd be from the smaller text size at a higher resolution, not the distance my eyes move from side to side.

    Call me lucky I guess?

I guess the same way I don't get a headache playing the game on fullscreen and looking back and forth at my powers, the chat, my target, etc.. or the same way people with lower resolution screens don't get a headache by scrolling back and forth on the same webpages (the physical screen size is the same, and the eye doesn't move any differently.. if anything, it moves slower on higher resolution because there is more text per line.).

As for newspaper columns.. I don't think it has anything to do with horizontal eyestrain. The narrow line width makes shorter articles easier to manage so they aren't only one or two lines across the full page, and so the paper can be folded and still be easily read. It reduces white-space at the end of paragraphs and maximizes the amount of content/ads they can put on each page. Books aren't written like that.

If you are straining your eye when you look from one side of the screen to the other.. then YOU ARE TO CLOSE!
  25. This time, I guess I will bring Star'goyle (WS). I haven't been leveling up my other toons. haha
