Simple speak version of Kitsune speak. Not including the OSX version since I've never used OSX.
On your desktop is the city of heroes shortcut.
Step one: Right click on the shortcut then click copy. Then right click on a blank area of your desktop and click paste.
Step two: Right click on the copy of the shortcut and choose rename. Change the name to bypass updater. Or stupid updater won't connect or peanut butter jelly tiime. It doesn't really matter what you want to call it.
Step three: If you are running a 32 bit version of windows then highlight the following including quotation marks.
"C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh
If you are using 64 bit windows then highlight this instead.
"C:\Program Files (x86)\City of Heroes\cityofheroes.exe" -project coh
Now right click the highlighted text and click copy.
Step four: Right click on the new desktop shortcut you made and select properties.
The window after "target" will probably already be selected. If it is then you can just right click it and choose paste. If the window isn't already highlighted then select everything in the window, right click, and choose paste. Make sure you select everything in the window because it's possible the full contents of the window extend past the visible area.
Step Five: Click the button on the bottom that says ok. You now have created a shortcut that can skip the updater whenever the updater is having a problem connecting. You can use it at almost any time and city of heroes will work just fine. The only time you won't be able to use that shortcut is if a patch has been released since the last time you used the updater. If a patch has been released then you will need to use the updater to play the game but after that one use you can go back to using the non updater shortcut.
Using this method is particularly helpful for players who have a satellite internet provider because the updater often takes many attempts to connect through satellite due to the latency. -
Are you sure that it's downloading another patch and not applying the first? That's the sequence it always works in. Spend a long time downloading a patch then spend an even longer time applying it.

Known issue, at least in the forums, and yes it's exactly as you said. It is definitely caused by short sleeve trench coat with those particular hands. Go to a tailor and take note of exactly which combination of coat and hands you are using then include it in a /bug report.

Quote:I have to agree with Kitsune on this one. I am seeing the problem excessively on Virtue so I think it must somehow be related to that. It's not (entirely) an issue with the market server, but with the shard you're playing on, which is why all the complaints (over many, many threads) have only said they're from Virtue (anyone not on Virtue with issues should really speak up and say so). Virtue being the common element in all the complaints means that Virtue is either the cause, or trigger, of the issue.
I don't believe it's the system because I just completely rebuilt my computer going from intel to amd and xp to win7 with everything installed from scratch but it has acted the same way on both systems.
It may be the network although I haven't noticed any lag or sync problems anywhere else in game. When I get a spare moment or two I'll have to try on Freedom to see if it's server load but that will mean creating and leveling a character on Freedom in order to get some salvage to put on the market. -
As Je Saist said it's the intel drivers. The intel chips never should have worked properly with CoX from the beginning. When ultra mode came out and the graphics engine was being rewritten it was found to be a kludged up, broken and patched mess. Somehow this spaghetti coded disaster allowed the intel chips to work.
This was according to a dev but I can't seem to find the post.
Edit: Even with further search I still can't find it so it's possible the thread was deleted or it was actually in an article elsewhere. Or I was imagining it. -
Want to cut down on the low population complaints?
There is plenty of room on the server selection page to put in a note
"Attention new players. The top server is the currently least busy and the bottom server is the currently most busy. If you have played already then the top server is the one you were last active on but the rest are in a least to most busy order."
It's not the fact that some servers are crowded and some are virtually empty that causes the complaints. It's that new players (and many veteran players) don't know which is which and wind up selecting a server that doesn't suit their preferences. -
I was going to mention this myself because I do it all the time. Although I only do it with characters that have a self rez or a teammate who has a rez up and ready. The wakie and rest causes almost as much downtime as waiting out the crash.

Quote:This is primarily from observation and from reading up in threads that I can't seem to find at the moment. As far as I know no red name has posted anything about it. However if you watch the forums you will see that every time global channels go down it won't be long before somebody starts a thread about how they lost items/inf in email. There isn't a swarm of posts though so it's likely related to very unusual circumstances such as attempting to send the mail right as globals crash.I've never heard anyone mention this before... Has this actually been shown to be the case by experimentation/a red name confirming that's how it (at least currently) works? That's definitely something that should be better known, if true.
I suppose I should have been more specific in my original post and said that it is possible to lose all attachments to an email when globals crash. -
It's a really bad idea to use email to store items. Any time that globals crash so does the email system and although the email itself might reappear the items attached do not. So I'm betting there was a crash yesterday.
It's great that somebody is doing something to restore them but storing items there is like storing items in the market if everything there was deleted each time it crashed. The best storage system is still retired or dummy characters. -
I thought about something the mentor project should take on. TFs that consist of all new to the TF players except for one mentor. Right now jumping into any TF can be hugely intimidating for somebody who hasn't done any TF before or even those who have done a few. You get in the TF and the leader barks orders or else everybody just automatically sprints to the next position knowing what they need to do and how.
Admittedly not all TFs are like this but many of them are. This undoubtedly puts many newer or more casual players off of jumping into some of the best content the game has to offer. So a good solution would be to have TFs that will only take people new to the TF and a mentor who won't tell them what to do but rather will listen to their decisions and give them information or possible strategies if they hit a sticking point. -
It's a known issue. Something to do with choosing jackets (or trenchcoats I guess) and then choosing monsterous hands #3.
Don't quote me on this, I'm going from memory at seeing another thread a couple weeks ago. -
"And so then I told her of course there is going to be friction if you don't use lube. Hold on, citizen approaching. I've got to do some random weird stuff like poke myself in the chest."
If I am a winner, I permit NC Interactive, Inc. and NCsoft Europe Limited to use my name, likeness, photograph, hometown, and any comments that I may make about myself or this contest that I provide for advertising and promotional activities. I also certify that I am at least 13 years of age and am eligible to participate in this contest. -
In your chat windows right click on the global tab and choose edit.
In the selected channels list among the listed channels you should see a blank line between a couple of the channels that are there. If you don't then look at the available channels list and see if there is a blank line there. If so then add that blank line to your selected channels. It is actually the cut scene dialogue channel. It just either has no name or invisible letters for some reason. -
There is a very very good chance that it's the low memory. Only having 1 gig can cause stability problems, most often while zoning. In addition to that you are using Symantec as your antivirus. Symantec is a memory hog. Even when idle it uses more memory than it should and when the rtvscan kicks in it bullies other programs off into the corner while it grabs up every bit of available memory.

First of all I have to comment on this. There is no such thing as a secure website.
Second. Yes that is a legitimate download site. For all windows updates all it does is link you directly to the official windows download site. It's a good place to bookmark if you are one of those people who can't manage to navigate their way through the never ending morass that is the official site.
As to the hotfix being necessary I really can't say. That bug popped up two years ago when sp3 was first released. It's possible, even extremely likely that Microsoft fixed it since then or even that the newer AMD chipsets aren't vulnerable. Even back when it first came out it wasn't affecting all AMD chips, just a significant portion of them. -
Citadel first please. It is required for an accolade and has the same problem. Invade the council base and defeat all time after time after time after time after time.

In some locations NCsoft has an exclusive distribution agreement with a local game sales company. If you are from one of those locations then you can only buy the game and boosters through that particular dealer even if they don't carry or have any intention of carrying the boosters. You can pay subscriptions costs through the account but that's it. I don't know if Estonia is one of those areas but that might be the problem.
In some cases though using a proxy server to make your ip appear to be in North America works. -
It's almost guaranteed to be Stardock. The actual skinning file may be named differently depending on which version was released with that particular Alienware system but it should be found in the stardock folder. Run the program and tell it not to reskin anything in city of heroes directory.
If that doesn't work or you can't find the program then do as Father Xmas said and post a hijackthis log. -
Hehehe, I love reputation. So far in this thread mine has been lowered twice. On my first post because "grats you're a lousy defender, learn to play already" and on my post where I said I was a fighter at heart "your probably a fat geek behind a screen if anything" Some people seem to rage at any challenge to their personal belief system.
Incidentally I'm the one in green. The picture comes from a Ren Faire show. It's about ten years old and my hairline has crept a bit higher but other than that I look about the same. So ya, not exactly a fat geek. Care to try again? -
Quote:/em shrugMy experiences teaming are outrageously, vastly, and so incredibly different from yours that they are simply incomparable. I play Defenders and Corruptors. I shoot bad guys. I spend the vast majority of my time shooting bad guys. My teammates have my buffs. I simply cannot comprehend how your experiences differ so greatly.
I have no idea either. Perhaps playing those archetypes all the time does get it down to a point where you can get through the buffs more quickly and while paying less attention to the status of your teammates. It could be I simply haven't played that style enough to become efficient at it. Or it could just be that what we consider to be a large portion of time shooting bad guys differs. After all, 90% of this game is personal perception. Otherwise everybody would prefer the exact same powersets and missions. I am definitely not a numbers cruncher so I'll admit my personal perception of how long it takes to fully buff a team could be off. -
Quote:Because when I'm on a team I am a part of that team. It doesn't matter if the team is steamrolling through every mission or completely failing every encounter. I do my best with whatever archetype I'm playing to keep the team alive and kicking. I'll also never quit a team during a mission unless it's a mutual decision to disband. Why don't you play Defenders and not care about other players status?
However I'm a fighter at heart. I prefer scrappers, blasters and brutes. I have played all the other archetypes too but I like dealing damage. When you are on a team as a defender no matter how well you play the character even if you are the best defender player who ever existed and have all your buffs and debuffs slotted to the max your abilities still have the same limited duration. You don't spend a significant portion of a mission being a combatant. Instead you keep your eyes on on your teammates. Hit them with your buffs when they need them. Hit them with a heal when needed. That is what I mean by playing whackamole with your teammates.
If you are on a small team then you have time to throw some shots at the enemy. Realistically though you aren't intended to be a damage dealer so if you are spending a lot of time attacking when on a large team then you aren't doing your best to support the group. It's like being a blaster and focusing on using medicine, leadership, and teleportation pools to try and keep the team alive. So on the rare occasions I play a defender on a team (I probably should have said rarely instead of never) I focus on doing my job with buffs, debuffs, or heals. But I would much rather be standing in the middle of the enemy and sending them to the Zig or the grave. -
I just created an add on to change the colors of the pop ups. Now all my recipes are purples.
Actually I kind of wish I had written one. Then I could send it to everybody who complains about purple rates. -
Said it before and I'll say it again. I won't play defenders on teams for this exact reason. You aren't playing City of Heroes, you are playing whackamole with the other players status.

GMs were much more popular in the beginning and yes it was because of higher rewards. Back then the xp from the encounters wasn't level based as it is now. Just like when the Winterlords first showed up you could get lower characters multiple levels from one GM. The solution to this was to hugely reduce the rewards but this should have been a stopgap measure.
When proportional experience was instituted then the GM experience reward should have been raised again but they weren't. Currently on all except a couple of the GMs the time/reward balance is hugely out of proportion. For the most part you can actually get much more experience and inf by street sweeping even lower level mobs for the same amount of time investment.
So right now there are only 3 reasons to hunt GMs. Badges are a one time reward. After you've done it once there is no reason to repeat. Merits are a repeatable reward but most of the time it takes so long to gather enough players or else to get to an out of the way location (I'm looking at you Jurassic/Babbage/Adamastor) or even to complete (Lusca/Paladin) that few people consider it a good source of merits.
The only GMs who are hunted regularly are easily accessed, fairly easy to defeat depending on amount of players, and give out a good reward. Those GMs are Eochai and Jack. They are defeated quickly enough to make them worth fighting for the merits and they are also required for the Geas accolade.
The answer is simple and obvious and has been so for a long time. Raise the experience/inf back to what it used to be. Thanks to proportional experience rewards nobody will be going from level 1 to level 10 from fighting Lusca any more. And for higher levels the experience rate will be about the same a running a mission and will also grant a couple merits. -
Not a problem. This has cropped up many times so it was an easy answer. And since you will hopefully keep playing after the trial here are some other extremely common answers.
"The Tram doesn't work for me." You are in the exit side, not the entrance. Go outside, turn right and go in through the big entrance.
"I changed my costume at the tailor but when I start playing the colors are wrong." If you are in Super Group mode then your costume will have the super group colors. From the open super group screen you can choose to override the Super Group settings.
"I'm doing a mission in Faultline and I'm supposed to find some ruins but the marker is off the map." Go to the top of lift H. Just north of the lift you will see a dead tree. There is an entrance to underground tunnels in a depression right next to that tree.
I think that covers the most common and frustrating ones.
