  12. I'll admit it; the first two characters I did the Honoree mish with, I got wiped and stomped but good.

Here's the difference though; I knew I had to change my strategies. Whatever I had done before didn't work in this respect for my Invul/SS Tank nor my Bots/Traps MM. As such, I did change tactics, and although it was a tough fight for both, I overcame, adapted and improvised. I made mistakes even during those last fights, but I learned and applied.

Nontheless to say, both characters got their alpha slot.

I can understand the OP's angst, and I truly felt ticked off getting two to four shotted by Honoree as well, but rather than blame the mish, I turned around and analyzed what I needed to do different; THIS unto itself is one of the reasons I like the direction this game is going. No more click-click-click on the powers tray and going "Leroy Jenkins" on the AV/EB/Portals; change tactics, weapons and/or method of attack as needed. Great input from the beta forums also helped me in devising a better tactic as well (thanks all you die-hard beta testers!).

Nontheless, I know some folks aren't into changing their ways or playstyle; for that, there is the 'autocomplete'. You have the option. Use whichever one you think will make your gameplay more to your enjoyment.

Strangely enough, I've been looking to buy a new home and move; this consistant issue with CoH contests (small, yet relevant issue), plus the insane tax changes they're about to make here in RI (much larger and expensive issue) to cover the state's pathetically high budget deficit are pretty much making my decision much easier to shunt up to Massachussetts. I already spend an hour each way each day to get to work in Portsmouth RI, and Mass. is much closer to my work.

Regardless, good luck to all participating in the contest! With the raw talent we have in this community, I can only expect pure awesomeness!
  16. Thank you two SO much for taking the time and effort to do this.

For as much as I enjoy the hunt for new things, with the limited time I have to play, this feature is one of the greatest tools I can use.

Thank you for taking the time and effort for all you've done!

Anyway, as a Rhode Islander, do something about it. You're a citizen of a democracy. You have a voice. Exercise it. Even if it's to get them to raise the minimum threshold to a more reasonable $5,000, or, a minimum threshold of $500 per winner and not total winnings.

In any case, NCSoft needs to do their homework better regarding RI law since this contest doesn't meet the state's threshold of notice.

    Another reference to the law
See post #15 above, and yes, thank you, I have been trying to do something about it, thusfar, to no avail.

The real irony is that Paragon City, were it a real place, is supposedly in Rhode Island. For it to be the only real state that can't participate in this contest is pretty funny all things considered.
Unfortunately, between RI State Laws being what they are and NCSoft not wanting to go through the pain of the RI State Law process under Chapter 11-50-1, we RI players have been left flailing in the wake of disinterest and bearaucracy. I don't fault NCSoft so much as I blame RI. I tried, using State Rep Patrick Kennedy at the time, to try to get this law changed or ammended, however, he left public service, and no one has shown interest in supporting me towards this from my multiple emails to our legislature.

Here are some links that give the dreary and unhappy details:

Section 11-50-1 of Rhode Island General Laws

    and for easier reading:

    How Stuff Works related article

Put simply, NCSoft doesn't want to pay the fees nor do the paperwork and posting required by RI State Law, understandably.

"Any person, firm, or corporation proposing to engage in any game, contest, or other promotion or advertising scheme or plan in which a retail establishment offers the opportunity to receive gifts, prizes, or gratuities, as determined by chance, in order to promote its retail business, where the total announced value of the prizes offered to the general public is in excess of five hundred dollars ($500), shall file with the secretary of state upon a form that he or she shall provide a statement setting forth: (1) the minimum number of participating objects to be made available; (2) the minimum number of prize winning objects that will be included in the promotion or advertising scheme or plan; (3) the proportionate opportunity of winning prizes; (4) the minimum value of prizes to be made available; and (5) the rules and regulations pertaining to the promotion or advertising scheme or plan which shall include the period of time and the geographic area to be covered by the contest. There shall be a filing fee of one hundred and fifty dollars ($150) when the statement is filed. Failure to file a statement shall be a misdemeanor."

The only chance we RIslanders currently have is if the prize item has no redeemable value (electronic or digital, per se), or the total prize offering doesn't exceed $500. I've discussed this with Ocho and Avatea, and when (no value) free items or equivelant digital giveaways (such as costume codes) are done, I figured Rhode Islanders should be allowed to participate in those particular contests, since it doesn't seem to count under Section 11-50-1 of Rhode Island General Laws. Both have told me their 'legal eagle' would be forwarded my information. No news or changes have occured on this front yet, nor the last couple "under $500" contests.

Regardless I'm not upset, just disappointed that once again I don't get to play in the sandbox with the rest of you for this.
  19. Once again, Rhode Islanders, such as myself, are cast to the gutters.
  20. The U.S. Thanksgiving is this week, and as such, I have much to be thankful for: a steady job (with travel ), great family, kids doing well in college and great friends, online and off. In this same vein, I found myself thinking how much I appreicate the work and effort that Paragon Studios (and NCSoft) have done to make City of Heroes and Going Rogue the outstanding game that it is for me and my family.

I have enjoyed this game for going on 4 years now, and have had a fantastic time re-opening my imagination whilst pounding the bad guys (or good guys) and hanging out with some incredible people online - all at the cost of the small monthly subscription and a bit here and there for a booster pack or two.

To our Devs: Thank you for taking the time and energy to make CoH and Going Rogue what it is today. It has indeed come a LONG way from the day I joined up, and am still entrenched in the incredible fun and challenge this game continues to offer as a result of your development efforts. Your time and sacrfices are well noted by all who know and play this game.

To our programmers, coders and GMs: You may not get the face time the devs or OCR team do, however, a fair majority of us understand that you are the ones the take the devs ideas and napkin-written plans and make them a reality. Without you, this game would be nothing. Our GMs get to deal day-in and day-out with irritated, angry players wanting immediate fixes and answers now, and over the past few years, I've yet to have a negative expereince with a GM. THANK YOU for your patience, dedication and, in my experience, professionalism, that I've come to respect from all of you.

To our OCR team: You are our link to the Devs, programmers, coders and GMs, as well as being our voice when the situation is warranted. You get the brunt of the experience, and with your consistant involvement, have been a shining light in interaction with this outstanding community. We have all had our differences, whether it be threads locked, bans, or what not, however, in doing even these more painful aspects of your job, you're doing what you can to make the community a better place. I have thoroughly enjoyed the impromptu Rikti Invasions, server zone events, gold-title giveaway interaction (like the "Real World Hero" kickoff party; thanks Ocho!), and the incredible effort put forth this year with all the Meet & Greets (did we break a record this year in dev/OCR event travel?). Again, thank you for all the overtime and dedication you put into this.

To our Marketing/Sales group: We, as players, always have high expectations for value and sales in our product. I haven't seen this much incredible effort from this group in my time in the game as much as I have seen this year. Ever. Ads in comics for 'Going Rogue', interviews with New York Post, Best Buy deals, G4 interviews, Meet & Greets, Gaming convention/event interaction, all the sales/promotional work/distribution for Going Rogue, and all of the background effort most don't know you do to keep this game financially viable. Black Pebble, knowing the second he created a forum account that he'd be suffering the slings and arrows of the entire community's input, sacrificed what I'm sure amounted to hundreds of hours of post reading and interpretations from said posts, all trying to glean what he could from us to help make the game better, while taking a severe beating in the process. As a teacher/trainer, I've known others to stand behind a podium, using it as a protective shield, while trying to teach a class of students - it makes them feel safe and invulnerable from any interaction with students; those who 'step away' from the podium and walk in and among the students, interacting with them, asking questions . . . those are the better teachers/trainers; Black Pebble 'stepped away from the podium'. Kudos and thanks to him and the team this year.

TL;DR: A huge 'THANK YOU' needs to go out to Paragon Studios and NCSoft as part of our tradition of giving thanks this Thanksgiving week for all of their dedicated efforts towards CoH and Going Rogue this year; I have MUCH to be thankful for as a result of their incredible efforts!

    Happy Thanksgiving, all!

I somewhat understand that they've been burned by scammers/stolen credit cards in the past, but it just seems like there should be a better solution. I mean other sites allow this kind of thing all the time. Furthermore, if I've been paying with the same valid card for over 5 years, it seems like I could reach some sort of "trusted" status.
I know what you mean. For all the 'store' issues and limited amount' of purchases one can transact, NCSoft has literally shot themselves in the foot.

When it comes to business and bringing in more dollars, I'd expect a company such as NCSoft to muster up more viable solutions than the same broken, archaic method they have now so as to take the 'limiting' factor out of the equation. Examples abound all over the internet today of thriving 'mom & pop' online stores that have more expansive options for payment than what NCSoft provides currently.
