Quote:Torchlight is only 300 and something MB in size, with a moderate story in complexity. Doesnt take too long untill your character becomes very powerful and owns the dungeons. To me it seemed at firs as unbalanced but i think they didnt actually mean to balance it. It looks like its supposed to have a certain dose of unbalance. What i did was put only a few points in strength and defense and dexterity but have almost everything in magic. Started playing with the alchemist for the pets. so basically at level 15,i think, i got a spell that literally owns everything .and it has sooooo many features that are so fun but also ncould be considered game breaking like the shared vault and the pet that goes and sells your equipments, abundance of pets you can get, and enhancind weapons infinetally? But you know what ? I love it. as much as i let myself captivated by the storyline and the games universe, and as much as a certain dose of logic related to the game's mechanics and the game itself, those tiny feature that help so much that sometimes you feel like cheateng are just so damn funWell, certainly. Though powergaming is more the desire for ever greater challenges, whereas mine is more the desire for ever greater LACK of challenge
Granted, a game CAN be too easy, but where one draws the line is a very subjective matter. From reading the forums, it seems like many people prefer the game to be hard to play so that they have to be powerful just to break even, whereas I like the game to be easy to play so that I have to be powerful only to kick *** and chew bubble gum
And I didn't really min/max much out of Torchlight. The game is absurdly forgiving for that sort of thing, as every item can be enchanted seemingly infinitely (barring a minor chance to break it) about as long as you have money, which produces some... Overpowered results. That, and I found a bug similar to what Sierra's Diablo Hellfire had. Curious... -
Quote:The story needs more acronyms to be funny.ToT-ing with my team using my AR/Trap corr, and wound up with 2 other trap users on the team. We're in G-ville and around those warehouse looking places not far off fom where TV is located. Haven't had this much fun ToT'in on any other toon.
Placing poison traps, landmines, caltrops, or myself even landing an ignite in front of a door before knocking is HILARIOUS!
It was kinda funny just doing it to see the monsters walk into doom like that, but it beacame a rofl when someone on the team referred to it as flaming bags of dog poo. After that came quotes from Billy Madison. XD lolz were had.
Anyone else have funny halloweeen cox stories? -

Quote:I speculate the following :Issue 16 sure was a beauty and all this information about Going Rogue sounds spiffy and all.
But now we know the Target time for GR...
Which must mean *dun dun dun duuuun* Issue 17 will be before GR.
So what in the world is going to be in it?
Since NCSoft took over they have been doing nothing but giving us everything we ever asked for. So what else is on that list?
I for one would love to see CROSS SERVER PVP. But, is the "Tech" for that even possible? Is the City Vault going to come to fruition? Will we be bombarded with new costume pieces? More color choices? New places to put those costumes? Moon Zone? Will lolVillains finally get a new zone?
Do you have speculation?
1. More stuff for the bored players hanging out under Atlas like : ants to step on, butterflies flying around and rabbits jumping here and there
2. Some additions to existing maps like : whales and dolphins in the waters surrounding Paragon, a public toiled in Atlas Park (some of us really have to go sometimes), darts and pool in Pocket D, bigger monsters in Monster Island, an icecream truck around Atlas park aswell as a hotdog stand.
3. Vehicles. Cars, trucks, a banana-mobil, busses, bigger trucks and double decker busses, motorcycles, bycicles, trycicles, monocycles, pogo sticks, roller skates and ice skates. Later on upon request the devs will integrate the GTA game in CoX and even later on upon new requests they will integrate the Need For Speed game mechanics in CoX.
4.New travel powers : Slingshot and Catapult. And each zone might have its own human cannon as an alternative to the trains
5. New character stances or poses ( or however they're named) like walking on all four limbs, running on your knees, crawling like a snake.
6. New powersets. Altough it has been officialy announced that water based sets will never happen, probably due to water being harmless or making female characters breasts show up through their costumes there is still hope for jellow , soda and air based powersets. As well as new Drunken Master powerset for scrappers. And the obvious Single pistol, dual shotgun, triple swords, Axe throwing, wrestling and water baloons powersets across archetypes.
New weapons like wooden swords, light sabers for scrappers and tankers and The BFG for devices blasters are also probably to be implemented in the next issue.
6. Asimetry. So we can have asimetric breasts and one limb bigger than the other.
7. Further character customization. We'll probably be able to customize other players costumes and biography.
8. Markets will be merged. With Wall Street. That way we can make some money off this game and show them who the real players are. Nasdaq beware!
9. Unfortunately the ''tech'' necessary for cross-server pvp is not here BUT rumor has it that we'll have cross-game pvp. For starters we'll be able to pvp with CO players and show'em who's their daddy and after we're done with them we'll move onto WoW noobz, each issue alowing us to pick on every mmo out there.
10. Moooore character customization so we can have bigger lips, visible toes and fingers with their respective nails that will get their own patterns. Ankle bracelets , tongue piercings and toe rings.
11. Tronkles, twinklorz, fongles and oodels of toodels are expected also.
12. New emotes. Crunk, breakdancing and society dances as new dance moves. Being able to beatbox while you boombox, reading more than newspapers ... Like playboy and hustler (time magazine also)
13. And of course interactive emote : give other players wedgie, set another player's cape on fire, push your team mates of a building ...etc
14. Gameplay inovations for lowlevel characters like being able to defeat the Clockwork paladin by jumping on its back and ripping off some wires.
15. A new taskforce that requires 48 hours to complete
16. Influence cap raised to 17 trilions
17. From the creators of the Vines pattern we'll now get the Lines pattern. And more shoulder costume pieces like purses and man-purses. As well as a few crosseyed faces.
18. Accuracy will be nerfed again. Fire/kinetics will get the Repel power as inherent and always on.
19. A moon base, saturn base, mars base and a sun base. it is suspected we could also get a center of the earth base and a Mordor base. -
The topic wasn't started on that premise. But on the presentation alone and what great things will bring. I dont see anything great and impressive on what has been announced to be in the expansionset other than Praetoria and the morality system.

I think we're all scrapping that barrel bottom when we start discussing the concept of personal opinion. No offence. I think the concept of ''personal opinion'' and ''personal taste'' should be known and understood among adults and visible when debating or discussing anything in general.

I'm in the wrong racket.
Ingame desing, the theory of practicality, ant sex, why whales can't fly, the influence of modern woman's farts upon the ozone layer, why atoms are so small and how their ego is so big, lady gaga and her peepee. As long as there's millions in it people will dedicate most of their life to it. They already dedicated years for seedless fruit and a comercial verion of the astronaut pen, cause pencils just weren't enough.

Not sure if I expressed it right in the title . Basically what i'm suggesting are UI skins adequate for each origin with the option to come back to the standard one we have now for those who don't like it. And obviously fonts that go with the skin.
So we could get more skins per origin or only a couple that we could change the main colors to.
I think it would ad some more feeling to the gameplay since a lot of players choose a background bio to go with the origin their character has. I'm writing from my phone so its hard to show a picture of what i mean. But if you're used or are using winamp to listen to music on your computer then you're probably familiar with those types of skins. -
Quote:I've been playing this game for 10 months. Not years like other players. But up untill now in 10 months (post i13) there has been : MA (the most consistend addition), one TF, powerset proliferation, a costume and some booster packs that i bought. At this point I have payed 150 USD for this game. Far more than any other games I have bought EVER. But at this point I am also playing : Heroes of Might and magic, Counter Strike, Call of Duty 2, Pharaoh and its expansion Cleopatra,StarCraft Broodwar. Games older than 10 months with a price far lower than CoX.I too am disappointed. I am disappointed that you have not even given it a chance.
I have been playing this game for 5, yes 5 years. All I can say is I went to HeroCon. I saw what they had to offer and heard what little tidbits they could leak out- knowing there was so much more that was unsaid.
Before I went to HeroCon I was a bit worried about the future of the game. After the Con I left with a feeling of renewel and vindication. I can now say with all conviction, "Champions Online? Did they bury that next to Betamax or Cassette tapes?"
Disappointed? No, not by any means.
Hopeful? Yes- on all accounts (including my 2 CoX accounts).

Lots of users dissagreed with me, told me i was whining and complaining, that i was trolling and so on and so forth. But when i choose to pay this much for this game its because i like it or something it has to offer. In this case the customization on other gameplay features. No i didnt burn through all the content and i never got more than 200 badges because there are things in CoX i dont enjoy, i dont see its content like homework or mandatory stuff. GR will be due by the time I have payed double this amount i have already payed and i am definately not impressed by a preliminary presentation that show me i'll be getting an optional visual upgrade. Maybe GR will be an impressive expansion ,but for me it has to bring something else other than graphics for high ends computers. -
Quote:You're right and also wrong. Most people in this thread participate in a discussion with personal thoughts and opinions. Few made them as absolute truths.
You're not in the minority.
As a student in the field of Game Development, I've said it over and over again in this thread. But, as expected, everyone's opinions seems to make any research, actual statistics, and professional advice obsolete. Here it is again:
Graphics goes hand-in-hand with gameplay and content.
Simply debating which one is more important for the well-being of a game is a pointless, meaningless discussion.
Since it seems that the "Pfft! Graphics are not important!" people are completely ignoring facts and observations from people who work in the field, here is the quote from one of my earlier posts on this subject:
The following is taken from the book Game Design and Development, written by Ernest Adams and Andrew Rollings. It is a university text book being taught in the field of Software Engineering and Game Design:
"Video games are an art form, so aesthetics are a part of their design..."
"...a game with clumsy animation, a muddy soundtrack, trite dialog, or sloppy artwork will disappoint players even if its gameplay is good."
"An ugly or awkward video game is a bad one, no matter how innovative its design or impressive its technology. Part of your job [as a game developer] is to give your players aesthetic pleasure."
A little further on:
"We [game developers] believe the graphics versus gameplay debate is no longer a meaningful one. The truth is that graphics and gameplay must work together to produce the total play experience. The graphics create the setting, which both sells the game and involves the player in the game's fantasy. The gameplay provides the challenge and things for the player to do. Both are essential to the player's enjoyment of the game."
Are we REALLY gonna continue this pointless debate?
If you think the graphics of a particular game are lacking, or if it's content and gameplay is lacking, then that's your opinion and it is as worthless as mine. But do not claim that the same should be true for everyone else. And because of that, do not criticize a COMPLETELY OPTIONAL FEATURE in an upcoming expansion SOLELY BASED ON YOUR OPINION.
That quote is right from a developer's point of view. The gaming market now allows for anything to have a succesfull chance because there's just so many gamers out there and so many people buying various types of games. This is a mmorpg asa a fact. And a mmorpg as another fact must bring a lot more hours of gaming than other games. I agree that graphics and gameplay go together, and that it was the time for an upgrade in CoX. But then you have going rogue with its morality changeand a new map. Not a free issue but a paid expansion meant to keep you playing and t bring new players to the game. But how many other games that rely mostly on graphics are there that you can play online with friends or strangers and not pay a monthly subscription.
You could argue your statement regarding games and graphics by not having enviroment interaction while having high world details and reflections.
What are good graphics after all ?
Going Rogue has been advertized as the next big thing in the CoX universe, again not a free issue. And they showed what it will bring new. That new stuff for me,personally, is not worth paying for. When they'll release more info about what new additions will be made with GR I will rethink if i'll buy it or not. instead of paying hundreds of dollars for a laptop upgrade I'd rather buy a PS3.
I also believe that as long as this is not a free product where i am given the privilege of playing it and its a subscription type of game I do have the right to complain. Might seem like whining but its not. An this topic is not whining or complaining, just an expression of my dissapointment. It became a graphics vs gameplay debate the moment some users started to make statements like how everyone should enjoy what they enjoy because they know best and stuff like that. -
Quote:Everyone enjoys a nice portion of graphics. But in games other than FPS their're not the thing that sells the game. And when graphics come with a cost ... there's always better and cheaper options that will stand out due to gameplay. See PS3 vs competition. Same thing on PC's. How many fps lovers upgraded for Crysis ? Some did but not all. Is ''some'' a considerable amount ? Maybe , maybe not. High end graphics always found their place as I said in fps games to due to their type of gameplay where the surrounding and scenery play an important role when it comes to gameplay and they bring a certain type of complexity and detail(S.T.A.L.K.E.R)The main point here though is that the best graphics in the world won't save your game, if the play is mediocre.
That's not to say that developers should completely ignore the eye candy though. Just that adding or improving how well the game plays should be the higher priority in general. And actually, with CoH I think that's been the case so far. They usually want to create more missions and more types of missions over, say, power customization.
My opinion, though? I want more interaction with the game's environment. A lot more!
Right now to me the super hero mmo market looks like a poker game with CoX, Co and DCUO. same Theme but different games that target the same sort of mmo player. NCSoft probably waits to see what the others too have to bring to the table, therefor I suspect we'll also get some sort of enviroment interaction around the date dcuo will launch as we did get the power customization. I also dont think the ultra settings are the super hot thing about GR and will definately not buy it for that but the engine will probably remove some existing limitations allowing for more things to be added to this mmo so they can keep up with the market. -

You missed my point. Here on the forum you have an identity. In real life would you like to be told something rude or mean to your face , therefor knowing the identity of the person or having anonymous calls saying rude or mean things to you ?
-
Quote:New players as in the difference from the number of active subscribers and the total amount of owners of a CoH copy. About 800.000.Alternatively: the new graphics aren't for us, the players who post on the forums and polish our veteran badges. It's for the potential players who come across CoH/V, take a lot a the screenshots and go, "That's old and ugly."
If GoRo doesn't bring in a lot of new players, things won't look so good (Ultra mode or not) for CoH/V. Graphics are going to help bring them in. -
Quote:I'll assume you have a job and co workes that you interact with on a daily basis. Would you like to hear from a co worker that a joke you said, something you wore, something random you said, etc was inapropriate or have that co worker be rude and impolite in your face OR get random anonymous call at your house or mobile having strangers be hostile or rude over the same stuff ?I made rude and inflammatory comments to his face in that thread.
Are those somehow better because they were made in public, where everyone else could see them, instead of in a dark corner of the forum where only MageX can see them?
The dark corner of the forum you mentioned is for reputation given for a post and the apropriate comments. Anonymous. Intended as a game as Niviene said. A forum thread is a publid discussion supposed to be moderated and respecting a strict set of rules. -
Quote:my topics name pretty much says everything AND i stated that it is a PERSONAL opinion and feeling BASED ON WHAT I SAW POSTED ONLINE FROM COMICON. Videos and pictures. Plus what others posted as being announced. I dont get it how people saw it as whining. I'm not a roleplayer, not living in games anymore (i used to once), i couldnt care less of the outcome of this game be it short or long term. As a subscriber regarding what I was informed via hero con regaring the expansipn for cox did not impress me at all. simple as that. Its bothering tough to see rep comments posted anonymously that accuse you and are somewhat hostile because you dont share an universal truth regarding this product that others seem to . I get the fact that we're all part of a comunity but each and everyone bought the game off a shelve for personal reasons and have their own personal wishlists and expectations. So the fact that your thread was based on faulty information, specious reasoning, and hyperbolic conclusions doesn't deserve -rep? Or the fact that you defended those flawed ideas with a sense of attitude and rudeness that was borderline against the rules doesn't either?
'k
Most of the bad rep comments that i got were in some way comments related to what i posted but in a rude and somewhat passive agressive way. Why not reply in the topic saying what you have to say then choose the anonymous way ?
too bad the forum doesnt allow user creaded polls. we could have a vote to keep or dismiss the rep system
edit : i just re read what i wrote and everytime i post from my phone i seem to loose myself when trying to write something. -
I'm curious how many suggestions and ideas will find their place in the game now, from the forum section with the same name considering the engine upgrade. Lots were rejected due to the current engine's limitations.

Quote:Starcraft, Diablo and CounterStrike are probably the top 3 examples. And there are so many more.As with any metaphor it is not 100% applicable.
My point is that graphics have no effect at all on gameplay, they're pure cosmetics. There's nothing "fun" about cool graphics beyond the first few hours of exposure- they get tuned out and become visual wallpaper.
Gameplay & story trump graphics every time. Half Life is still a great game, System Shock II is still a great game, heck Super Mario is still a great game...and not because of the graphics.
l337 graphics are a percieved necessity within the industry, nothing more. I'd prefer that energy be spent on other things, although I understand the rationale behind this sort of upgrade. It will placate the gaming press and flightly players and generate buzz for the expansion, which is a valuable function even though I personally won't get any direct benefit from it. -
You should see the rep messages i got for opening a topic in this section where i stated a personal feeling and opinion. the rep system is for quantifying(hope i spelled it right) the quality of someone's posts not for anonymous bashing and trolling someone's thoughts/ideas/opinions with rude and passive agressive messages. To me those sorts of messages mean absolutely nothing since the user sending them does so anonymously.

Quote:So how come their revamping the level 1-20 experience only ? I`m pretty sure it won`t be just the level 1-20 content (story arcs, tf`s or other trials) but they made it look like its a new concept of playing. At least thats what I thought.Hi we have made multiple zones with content that you can outlevel in the space of 2 hours
But dont worry because the enemies there on the street cover all level ranges!
Because after all . . . . . the pistols tier 9 isnt available until at least level 32 and that "grey" clockwork didnt exactly go down quick now did it -
