  1. I've always heard the 'praises' of Kinetics and experienced them but couldn't come up with a concept I liked. Finally came up with on as a Kin/Ele Defender, but couldn't get it to work the way I wanted. Transfered him to another server and remade him as a Ele/Kin Controller and he's now among one of my favorite heroes. This... is ImpuseIV's story:

(direct copy/paste of his description) Jason Yin was a researcher for SmarTech, working on neural interface technology for people with prosthetic limbs, to be able to use them as naturally as their own. In the course of his work he invented a device to affect synaptic response times, generating fields capable of increasing/decreasing that response in others within its area. He was so exited by his discovery that he didn't consider the possible side effects. After a few days of toying with it, he found that he was affecting himself and others without using the field. Instead of the miracle cure he wanted, he gave himself powers he could barely control. Using his knowledge, he built a suit to control the effects and destroyed the prototype due to its dangrous side effects. This resulted in him getting fired. It was company property after all... After losing his job, he came here to Paragon to use his powers for good, hopefully a little money, and crash with his Uncle and cousin, Penelope. The Clockwork kinda freak him out though...

I went with Psychic mastery since it was all about controlling and adjusting brainwaves/bioelectric rythms, and tied that into the Yin family tree as a by-product.

When I remade him, I did so as a Praetorian (just to try the new content) but loved his backstory. Since I didn't have room to add more, the idea was that during a fight with the Rikti he was thrust into another dimension (Praetorian Earth) and they all accepted him as a well-known hero over there by the same name and inducted him into the Powers Division. After finding out what happened to his cousin Penny on this other world, and how that world worked, he got back here as soon as he could. Everyone now thinks he's 'from' there (except his cousin and uncle who wondered where he was) even though he isn't. It's something he's tried to come to terms with and convince others of, ever since he made it home.

However, I'm prone to overthinking my character's backgrounds
  2. Thanks again to everyone who keeps this current and working! Keep up the excellent job folks! Just got the new version. Haven't figured out how to add the enhancement... enhancers, but I'm sure I'll figure it out.

    Thanks again!
  3. As far as I know SG mode doesn't affect Power Cutsomization, so that's probably ruled out, but changing costume pieces may work, and thanks for the head's up!

I'll have to try the change a costume piece at the same time thing. I just wanted to make sure that bug was going on, as I've never experienced it before. However, this was after I heard Friday some powers were creating tentacles to sprout out of people's heads and spider claws to come out of their back, so hopefully they got it fixed, or they have some kind of handle on it.

I was just thinking of folks who tried major expensive overhauls to their character that didn't stick. Might want to save those changes before hand, and plan on the inf being spent even if it doesn't change it. Wasn't a huge deal to me, but I could see it making some folks crazy. Figured I'd point it out as a possible issue. I also sent a PM to one of the OCR's when I made this post, so hopefully it's fixed now. However, I still wanted to toss that out there.

    Good gaming everyone!
  4. Was running around in Praetoria with my Villain Dual Pistols/Traps Corrupter, and went to the Tailor in Imperial City. I wanted to tone down the color of my Force Field Generator.

After making the change and forwarding though to pay for the change, it didn't change it. Took my money though, but didn't change it.

I tried this a couple times (just changing the color, so it wasn't expensive) and got the same results.

Well I figured that maybe because I was a Villain and not a Praetorian, something may be flagged funny and not noticing the change, so I went to Pocket D.

Same deal. Tried setting all the powers to their original settings. Didn't stick (but cost a bit more money). So I logged out and tried again. Same thing. So I filed a bug report and gave as much info as I could in the space given.

Then I thought I'd try one last thing and went to the Rogue Isles and tried the Tailor there.

    It worked!

So, just a head's up, be careful where you go to your tailor. Apparently non-aligned ones to you are more inclined to give you a set of the Emperor's New Clothes than actually change anything.

I don't know if it's just Traps, or all Powersets, or it applies to costumes and everything, but I still found it worth mentioning to the boards here

Just a head's up. From what I can tell, Exalted's help chat isn't much better

I leave my global channels and help chat on when I'm soloing for the "background noise". I let a lot of it blow by and I avoid the chatter, but help when someone asks a question I know the answer to.
  6. For my namesake, assuming he could shapeshift from man to werewolf at will, he would keep a secret identity. He uses the powers he has to help, but isn't keen on letting others in on the monster he could be. It's a razor's edge; one that could hurt even the ones he loves.

Myself, assuming I were more 'Superman' I'd still keep a secret identity. I don't like people in general at the best of times. Myself and a few friends maintain that's why we'll never get super powers . I want to help, but I don't want or need people up my "pancake" about it even if the fight is something I agree in.

Of course if I were alone, I may feel a bit differently. Having a family changes those priorities a bit.

I'm sure those kinds of thoughts apply to everyone's concept of whether or not they'd be 'full time' hero or even villain.
  7. Well I, for one, hope they do decide to make them. They'll probably get money from me more easily that way

Say I'm at Best Buy checking out movies, since I'm there and have some spare cash, I'll pick up a $15 card- I'd daresay almost every time I go... since I don't go unless I have the spare cash

Holidays are coming up, and like I said before, they'd make great stocking stuffers! I know I'd buy a few for my son, who's Premium, so he could get a few more reward tokens toward his next tier.

My daughter plays a series of other online games that have such cards. Most of her gifts last year was that she wanted those cards so she could buy clothes and stuff in them. At the time I thought, compared to other things we could have gotten her if she'd asked, it was kind of silly. However, I shrugged and figured "If that's what she wants..."

But I'm thinking if they do make them for Co* I can see myself asking the same of anyone who doesn't know what to get me.

    Just sayin'

OH! Also, I'd also buy them for my old secondary' account which I'm playing around on again as Premium (let it lapse long ago) just for fun. I doubt I'd ever put anything for it on the credit card, though the occasional points card I'd purchase would go on it if I have everything I want on my main VIP account.
  8. I'm positive this has been brought up, but I'm curious if there are any plans to sell Paragon Points cards (not the game time-cards, specifically cards for Paragon Points) at any retail outlets?

I pay for my sub with credit and budget that in, so I don't want to use time cards, but I try to minimize credit spending. I'd probably buy more points on a regular basis if you could buy them at Game Stop or Best Buy or something. I know I'd buy some for my Premium account from time to time, and I'd love to have some stocking stuffers or occasional surprises for my son and wife (we all play )

If it hasn't been mentioned before, it seems really silly that it hasn't.

    Now, go to the tailor.

Go to the left and start scrolling...

    I'll wait.

Do you see all the choices you have for the judgements? For Lore? For Destiny? Now, the coding, as I understand it, for the color customization is done to mimic THAT, but for the APP and PPP sets.

    Still with me?

NOW, imagine you have EVERY patron pool...

Not that large an addition, right? Just 4 sets...

But wait, each AT gets different facets of the PPPs. How do you differentiate on the UI?

NOW, add the APPs... Each of them is different for each AT, AND some have access to certain things that others do not. (Pyre and Fire are different, after all).

So, let us go back to that scrolling bar on the left side at the tailor again...

Can you imagine how long it is now?

Admittedly, the pool powers aren't that many and varied, and they work the same for everyone, so... No real excuse for Leaping/Flight/Maneuvers etc...

    But, Leviathan/Soul/Mu/Mace/Pyre/Body/etc., etc...

THAT will take some time and apparently there are other things the bosses wanna do first.

Not saying it is right, or fair, or even a good idea, just trying to help some folks wrap their noggins around the undertaking that APP/PPP customization would be.
What I wonder is what if they made an 'invisible badge' you get when you select a Pool, Epic, or create an Incarnate power. That nonexistant badge (as far as we players are concerned) represents the unlock for that 'costume piece'. We lose that badge when we respec out of it or create the next level of Incarnate power, consuming the previous one(s) and get the appropriate non-badges with what we change instead.

Kind of like having the badges associated with the Witch's hat from doing the Katie Hannon TF, or the Council Rifle, which has nothing associated with it other than unlocking the costume piece for Assault Rifle players.

I don't know if that's possible, but it would definitely make the UI a lot cleaner looking and easier to use.

Snark aside (if there was any percieved in my last post) that's the way I see it.

The gauge of 'timeline' in this game, such as it is, is level based. There have been folks that have pointed out in other threads that it levels up as the story progresses.

I have no doubt that the actual 'epic' finale is in the 50 range. The idea in design though, is that you've been running with these signature characters your entire carreer, and you know them. The level system is a way to represent that.

That's how I'm reading it at any rate.

Even when I respec I take EX'ing into account, or at least I try to. There's a few characters I don't ever want to EX down with, but for the couple I consider my 'main' characters, I expect it- for reasons just like this one.

Frankly, I just turn down the level of difficulty and roll with it. I have a few friends who can't wrap their head around the concept of EX'ing but even then, I just can't find myself getting upset about it. It's part of the game. It's not like it's a surprise.
  14. I just recently got my Ice/KM Tank to 50!

Now, this obviously reqires a bit of explanation. I originally created him on my only other alt account a long time ago. He was Ice/SS. A guy in high-tech power armor that had a force field powered by zero point energy (the cold aura and such was ambient heat being drawn in to feed the reactor).

He was my first and only 50 on it. After they opened up the possibility to have 36 slots per server, I cancelled my sub on that account (though am reactivating it with Freedom) with the vain belief that 3 times the ammount of characters I could have on my main server (Champion) from before would be enough, or if it wasn't, it better be. I deleted the original, then bought the other 24 slots I could and remade him.

However I remade it as a Ice/EM Tank. I wanted to try EM, and remade the character as his sister that hijacked a prototype armor he was designing after the first was destroyed by Nemesis (who turned out to be the one that killed his father, the original owner of the armor) in that fateful confrontation on the Rikti mothership.

I drug her through to level 38, but even after getting Total Focus was unsatisfied by the overall power combination. I missed my Ice/SS Tank, flaws and all. See, the power armor hovered, so I had to land to use Footstomp, then kick hover back on again. It was slightly annoying, but with the new power animations they just added... well I would deal with it. So she was 'wounded in battle and unable to return to hero service'. I deleted that iteration and remade him, back into his old Ice/SS power armor.

Funny thing was, while leveling this concept up for the 3rd time, I pondered why would he just be a Tank? He's just a guy in a power armored suit. Having actually built one from scratch, why wouldn't he build variations to handle different situations (al-la Iron Man) that just the one suit wouldn't be able to handle?

So I designed a FF/Ice Defender (Cold Mastery didn't exist yet-and yes, I thought about remaking him too many times already) for retrieval, team support, and rescue operations. And then a Ice/Devices Blaster (gave up the force fields for more firepower and had to externalize components for space reasons, but built in stealth to compensate- That one has two builds, one for Munitions Mastery that I like the best, and one for Ice Mastery to get back the 'force fields' he was missing before) for groups and situations that reqire more... finesse.

Now, keep in mind there was no power leveling involved. I played each through. I did 'cherry pick' story arcs that fit the character or ones this character hadn't done before to make each experience a new journey for him. However there was nothing that forced the leveling along for the most part.

So now I got the Tank and the others up to level 50. THEN they introduce Kinetic Melee. I like the look and sound of it. Going Rogue had just come out, and I made his father (who was murdered on this world- Keep up!) as a Praetorian who was the last surviving member of his family to the Hamidon. This (currently level 22 since I'm keeping him native) Ice/Cold Controller has honed his armor into something truly formidable in his world. Running that, and my Tank at the time, through some of the new high-level Praetorian arcs, I imagined that he confronted his father in this new world and was found wanting. The armor was again destroyed, and there needed to be a redesign based on what he learned.

At least I managed to convince myself of that.

So I transferred the 2nd level 50 Ice/SS Tank to another server and remade him once more into an Ice/KM Tank and loved the difference! I can now produce all his attacks while Hovering, and picture the sound as all his servos and energy output being put into each strike. It was a blast leveling him to 50! I took a different route for leveling him since it was available, and did the Hero tips for the points to go into his level 50 build when it happened. It kept me from focusing on him (only 5 tips per day when I decided to play him) so I didn't get burnt out, and gave me the tools I needed when he hit 50. I'll admit I got impatient and ran some story arcs with him near the end to get him his last few levels, and will revisit the RWZ story arc at some point for his final confrontation with Nemesis to put that to bed for him once and for all, but that'll keep for now. I'm going to take my time finishing out the build I had for him at 50 before I do all that. Then maybe cruise through the Oroborous to go over all the arcs I missed on him.

Funny thing; that character is not my 'main'. However his story is richer and more developed in the game lore, and has more levels under his belt that my 'main' and all the variations on him I have created thus far.

So all the levels I've played in regards to this character, it's at 260 levels- counting his Praetorian Father that I've created, while counting the namesake it's effectively level 238, or it's just 200 counting the original character I created.

So how crazy have you gotten in your character's backgrounds and re-rolling of that character? How much have you re-designed re-buit and re-created the same character over the course of gameplay for the sake of story/playability/powersets?

Just as importantly, how many times have you done it and incorporated it into the ongoing story of the character's growth?

    Lyc~ the curious werewolf

Yeah, I couldn't find the exit either. I just Oroborous'd out (though I really wish I found the alternate exit, and would have kept looking if I didn't have to go back to work since I was between shifts). Will have to run it again sometime soon, probably with the SG, just to see if I can find it.

I forgot to turn the difficulty down too, due to the EX'ing. The first mission was... interesting

Anyway, I played both the hero and villain ones and was pleased with both. I liked the contacts, and the 'allure' for villains to gain power, while the hero was following up on leads by a criminal who wanted the same goals for different reasons. Both suited the characters I was playing and I could see it being 'generic' enough that any other character I brought could find a reason to follow along. (that's imporant *coughcoughdoctorgravescoughcough*) and the end missions even encapsulated the essence of what being a hero, and a villain, was about (in my opinion) while keeping them on the same course.

I liked the unique(ish) maps and hope to see more as the story progresses, and as you update other story arcs and zones. Those kinds of things are important to immersion into the story and the world at large. You've done similar with the low level experience and I can't laud it enough.

All in all, it was enjoyable. Short enough that I didn't feel I had to rush through it for time, detailed enough that it entertained me and kept up with each story (note the distinction between short and detailed).

Finally, I like the similar, yet subtle distinctions, between the end cutscenes. I hope you expand on who we're actually looking at and their part in affairs, as well as the obviously obfuscated individual on the other side of the wall.

Now for the few criticisms I had.

I wish the villain contact was a tad more unique. He looked like a common CoT spectral summon for all intents and purposes. I ran the hero arc first and so was a little confused by who this entity was at first and figured the spawn boss was a mistake. This also kind of plays into the 'offscreen' dialogue individuals where you change the color of their chat boxes but not the NPC text if it scrolls by too fast. Makes it difficult to follow sometimes. Also, make NPC text auto-selected in the Chat and Help tabs. Some of my SG mates forget to do that and miss out on story as a byproduct.

I like that villianside you can get rid of the PPD in that one map, but only after fighting stuff around the 'runes' anyway, and after you passed all the PPD. Kinda felt pointless in that perspective, though I liked the idea!

I heard a few complaints in the global channels I subscribe to that the lava was disorienting to look at, though I had no problems personally and thought they were a great touch.

The alternate exit was too hard to find in that first map on either side (though that's not really a complaint, I'll just have to look harder ) if there isn't actually one, that's not cool.

Anyway, that was my two cents!
  16. It happened during the drive home from work. I worked a night shift and lived quite a ways from the house. I got home to my phone ringing and ignored it the first time, because I was tired and wanted to go to bed. Answered it the second because I thought it might be an emergency about one of my kids, or another family member.

It was a friend of mine who wanted to make sure I was okay. I worked in Memphis TN at the time, which is a transportation hub. He worked in Chicago, IL, another transportation hub. He wanted to make sure I and my city were okay and to see if I knew what had transpired, which I hadn't at that point.

At first I thought he was messing with me, then after turning on the TV I found I wasn't surprised. Horrified, but not surprised. I watched everything transpire until I couldn't stay awake any longer.

I knew my Aunt worked at the Pentagon, and later found out she worked in the section of the Pentagon that got hit. Someone must have been looking out for her and her department, because they were doing renovations to that section and her department was temporarily assigned to another area.

In that respect I was fortunate, but a number of my friends (online and otherwise) were not so.

In my mind the later and more recent tragedy about it, is how many schools don't even include it in their curriculum, either because it's too 'disturbing' or 'controversial'. Which is a shame.
  17. I remember him posting quite frequently on the forums. You're right, Turg, a lot of folks move on and one just kind of figures they went on to other things.

Thank you for letting us know. He will be missed.
  18. I know I'm necroing the heck out of this thread but I just saw this the other day.

If they are going to compare what we give away for free to what other games give away for free, I think they'll find what we give away for free is quite competitive with what most hybrid MMOs give away for free, and I acknowledge that you mention that as well. But its important to note City of Heroes is not trying to be the best free game around. I think its great we're competitive, but if we're found lacking as not the best free deal in town, I'm okay with that as well. If you want to play the best free game in town, City of Heroes may not be the game for you. There are lots of others to try, and I don't want City of Heroes to sacrifice anything to try to compete in that space. That space is not our space.

We are, as I've said before, stealing some of the toys that free to play games use to implement their games, to make a better subscription game with ala carte options. If some people think that in using those tools we have an obligation to deliver what they expect those tools to deliver, I'm here to say that obligation does not exist. From the very beginning, the devs have been very clear City of Heroes is not becoming "free to play" as the term is normally used. Allow me to quote Brian Clayton, executive producer:

"What is City of Heroes Freedom? For starters, Freedom is NOT Free-to-Play."

Maybe *he* should have used a bigger font.
I usually avoid these types of debates because I generally consider them toxic to the game at large for a variety of reasons (including my own sense of enjoyment) but Arcanaville hit the nail on the head for how I feel about this.

A few friends that had to stop playing for financial and/or time reasons, and other friends who just won't pay to play a game, are kind of exicted about coming back, or giving it a try. My son is looking forward to returning to Paragon (he's 20; he likes playing but has other priorities for his cash, college among them). Also, because of that, a couple of my son's friends are considering picking up a copy of Going Rogue just so they can start with the extra goodies. To be honest even if they don't, and though I doubt most of them will ever subscribe, they'll probably buy things here and there if it's cool enough. The point is, they're new players checking things out.

Outside the forums, I see very little negativity about this, even with the limitations. It's drawing friends back, and even bringing in new ones that haven't had enough interest until now. There's no bait-and-switch. They know what they're getting and what they're not. They've asked me about it, and I'm fairly sure most of them are literate enough that they can find out more if they want

I know this statement will probably be considered flamebait, but what a lot of the gripes seem, to me at least, is currently paying players are upset they can't stop paying and keep all their cool stuff when Freedom launches.

There are some concerns and thoughts that should be discussed, and some current restrictions will probably loosen up a little once everything's in place and they find their equilibrium with the new model. Going in with snark in the title isn't the best way to address that.

I keep coming back to this question, as a number of people have pointed out; currently people who don't subscribe get nothing. How is Freedom taking away from that or making it worse? No. Seriously. How?

Yeah I wish they'd get rid of the 'required' contacts/runs, like Wincott, the PvP contacts, Jim Temblor, etc. I could see if you're new to the game, but after being around a few years... I get tired of getting forced to go run to them before my contacts will give me anything else. It's almost like they don't want my help!
  21. I like the unlockable contacts too. I also really like that you can Oroborous them if you unlock them after you've passed the level deadline. I'm rather fond of Crimson Revenant if just because you can fight Mynx and Back Alley Brawler relatively early in your carreer. I unlocked him unwittingly on my first character and managed to run across him (this was before they had the "someone wants to see you" notification when you unlock them now). Only one in my SG to have it unlocked and everyone thought it was the neatest thing.

Because back then you had to know what to look for, it made them a nice surprise when you did find them or when they showed up on the Oroborous list.

But I digress. I wouldn't mind seeing your newspaper (and detective if they add them heroside) contacts, as another option, to give you a clue about an unlockable contact if you don't want to just grab a regular contact after your safeguard (only available if you have them in your level range).

I could look something like this:

Be introduced to a new contact.
    or
Hey, I heard something that might be of interest to you...

And the 'something' would be a clue to unlocking an unlockable contact in your range.

    Thoughts?
  22. While I don't think we'll ever see it happen, I think it's a really good idea.

I have a power armor character that has multiple suits of power armor, that's represented by 3 different characters (had to put a v2 and v3 after the name respectively). The main is a Tank, another a Defender, and the other a Blaster. Each suit of power armor covers different needs.

For my namesake, I wouldn't mind a future Street Justice/Willpower build for my human side to compliment my Claws/Invul werewolf side.

Wow... I'm getting too many ideas off this. I'm gonna stop there, since I'm pretty sure we won't see it... Still think it's a neat idea though.

The worst to me are the ones who don't lead and just assume everyone knows the drill. If I'm not getting enough leadership, I ask "Which Team goes to which area?" or "We leaving doors open? Who are we giving Pacification Grenades to?". If I don't get a response, I generally hope for the best, and just bow out of the next one, if there is one, afterward.

  25. I'd have to say the Jewel Belt gets used in a lot of my designs. I'm also fond of the Justice shoulder pieces and gloves (with the plate on top of the arm). I also use Rocket Boots a whole lot, but that's more because there are no jet pack costume options.

Oh, and I use the 'Offical' police belt on any/every character it makes sense for it to be on. It's the most 'gagety' looking belt they have.
