I honestly don't think most folks don't want to do them, moreso than they don't want to have to do them.

Like I pointed out previously, Most servers schedule Mothership raids for once a week or so, and usually fun is had by those who attend. Now if those same players were told that to make any real progress forward for their characters, they'd have to do Mothership raids as often as they could over a long period of time to get anywhere... well they'd probably start resenting those too. That doesn't even touch on players who don't go to Mothership Raids because they don't like large team stuff, or can't handle all the graphics for personal or computer performance reasons...

Which is essentially what we have right now if you want to make any sort of realistic progress in the Incarnate system. Hence my labeling it an aberration.
That's pretty much what I took away from that idea, and I agree with you. However, I probably could have worded it better. My apologies if you felt I misrepresented your view.

Basically, I'm wondering just how much the current team size requirements are actually hurting the trials.
Here's an interesting counterpoint; Why should they reduce the rewards if the challenge is on the same level, requiring a similar ammount of time, as adjusted to the smaller team min/max requirement?

There seems to be a disconnect that's going on regarding smaller teams 'must have' less rewards. If the challenge takes a similar ammount of time and effort by each member involved, why should they receive less? The only time not taken into account at this point is the time required to form the team, and if one posits the Dev team anticipated the ammount of time it would take to form a team into their calculations, that almost seems a bit silly (not saying it's not true, wouldn't surprise me either way, but...).

If a large team takes 45 min to complete a goal, why should the smaller team, assuming the same ammount of risk is involved (per character) in time and loss, why would the smaller team 'need' less reward?

If the answer comes back to 'more folks would ONLY do the smaller team/solo stuff' then the mindset, and drive, by the Dev's for larger team content at the incarnate level truly begs to be revisited.

Now, I have no quarrel if I can guarantee myself (like hero merits, for example) that I will only get a limited ammount of components/emp merits/astral merits per day from solo content (not even arguing the ammount here as long as it's per day of effort equivalent to the time I would run any particular trial) since currently I can only get so many of these same rewards through 'raid' content (per 'raid') per day. The fact that I can be ambitious enough to do both, if I have time, makes it even better, and the idea that I only prefer one (even if that one is the large group stuff) is still valid. If there's only a couple of 30-45 min things I can do per day in solo/small team content with a chance of failure (and the ability to redo it 'til I get it just like the trials) then why should I (and/or my small team) recieve less reward than the larger team stuff?

I like the current Incarnate content when I actually have the time away from my SG to run it. If I could just do it with my SG, I would do it much more often (since my SG would be willing to- which many are currently not). Again, if the only reason is 'more people would actually do the solo/small team content, then the push for enforced large team content needs to be examined.

One person mentioned that 'raid' content is a disease. I beg to differ. I think FORCED 'raid' content is a disease. Most servers schedule Rikti Mothership raids on a regular basis as part of the servers events. They're a LOT of fun when I choose to go. When I'm told the best and/or ONLY way to progress is by mothership raids... they become a job, and not fun anymore.

I hope the new DA is the cure for the current problems, making the Incarnate 'Raids' a healthy part of the game's ecosystem, run on a regular basis by groups of people that have fun doing it.

tl;dr version- 'raid' content isn't a disease, unless it's the best/only valid way of progression.

I really liked the Ennis/Crain mini series, and the followup by Way/Saltares/Texeria (later Aaron/Boschi) with his 'rebirth' back out of hell, and the revelation that being a tool of Lucifer was a deal brokered by the angel Zadkiel selling God's Vengance out as part of his plan. It got kind of dodgy near the end, but had a really good story going, and the Ennis run was brilliant on its own. Also the "Trail of Tears" mini-series was really very good in my opinion, and did a lot to capture the essense of the rider.

I don't dislike the new run, but it doesn't have a lot of strength behind it. I hope they do find a good team to work on it. There's some truly awesome anti-hero stories that could be told with the Ghost Rider.

Back on topic. As for X-23, I'm really sorry to see the series go. I pick a copy up for both myself and a friend of mine who's a fan of hers as well. I'm not a big fan of Wolverine (though I don't hate him either, even though I think he's been a little overused). However, I like X-23 for the character she is, and has developed into. I hope she doesn't fall into the same category Wolverine has, wandering into every series 'til she's involved in everything 'cause she's cool...

On the other hand, I also read Avengers Academy... she's an... interesting... addition to the roster...

Definitely this. I've thought about this neumerous times. Would love a recharge inspiration.

I didn't used to like using inspirations and would hoard them as well, kind of still do, but I don't mind using them like I used to. Way back in the day I felt if I needed to use inspirations it was somehow a failing of my character's abilities/build. Don't know how that thought got into my head, as they're a part of the balance in the game and are to be used when needed.

Plus I came to the conclusion that it's somewhat iconic in comics and therefore is part of the 'perfect system'.

Like in this picture here... (didn't want to pull the image off the site, so I made a link to what I was looking for to illustrate it)

I still personally challenge myself not to use them unless really need to, but I will use them now.

I like this option (and compromise). It's nice to see what each hero brings to a city, and with Oroborous, that makes allowances for those times when the character doesn't hit the zone in time. I agree that I don't like the 'zone-time' to take effect but I'll go with that if it means I can make a difference on each of my characters, as they experience the zone individually.

I see this as an evolving tool that will do so as the zones themselves do. Kings Row, Perez (and the addition of a TF or Story Arc), Boomtown (as a Pseudp-PvP envirozone), and the Shard (as a Co-Op zone) etc.. I, personally, would love to see some Rogue Isles zones 'cleaned up' due to the efforts of Longbow and a few Vigilantes who would make the effort 'off the books', or a few Paragon zones 'brought low' by the efforts of self-serving Rogues, but that's another story...

The thing is, the sky's the limit with the Dev's if they look at it the right way, our goal then, would be to encourage the 'right way' of looking at it.

As a wizer and more charismatic person than I once put it.... 'Nuff said!'

  8. I dunno, I think the crew from Alien was fairly smart given the circumstances... Well except for that whole breaking of quarantine thing, and they made a big deal about how stupid it was (of course it was done on purpose, but they didn't know that at the time).
  9. I'd honestly love more smaller 'task force-y' Incarnate Trials. A lot of my SG folks are kind of insular, and hardly do any (or not at all) of the Incarnate content, which makes it difficult for me to participate in them. I'm not going to ditch my friends that I've been playing with pretty much since I started. So I catch as catch can, and when time allows.

I'm really looking forward to the DA stuff and hope that's only the start. I KNOW I can get my SG involved in something that we could do on an SG night without involving a lot of other people. One or two guests into our group can be a fun way to meet someone new when the mood strikes us, but more than that and most of the group won't be interested.

For the record, most nights we're a group of about 5-7. We have other friends that pop in from time to time, and we wouldn't turn away a new member if they fit in with the group (and can put up with us ). We don't actively recruit because we've all known each other a really long time, and want to keep our SG 'team sized' so nobody gets left out.

So yes. I would do them as often as I could convince the SG to do them, and PuG when I had the time. I frankly like smaller groups better anyway.

The only game cards I have bought for myself are from another company, and they're $15 for 1500 points. I pay the $15 plus tax then get the 1500 points or a month of game play ($15 subscription fee). So all I pay is less than a dollar in tax that I wouldn't have had to if I just put it on the credit card.

I would hope Paragon Point cards would work the same (or similar) way.

The vibe I'm getting is that it is something they want to do, but they've been (and still are) so busy working on the CoH: Freedom launch that it just hasn't bubbled up as a priority yet.

They have acknowledged that they know that people want to be able to gift things. To be fair, it's not as simple as people probably think it is; it would take some dedicated hours from a lot of teams and would probably be a full-scale IT project to implement it in a secure manner. All of that costs money, and someone has to sell to someone else the notion that it will bring in more money than it will cost to do. I strongly suspect that the "someone" is Ross at Paragon Studios and the "someone else" are the powers-that-be at NCsoft in Austin. If Zwillinger sees this thread, maybe he'll point it out to give the "someone" more ammo. Or better yet, if I'm right that this is something that would have to come out of Austin and not Mountain View, perhaps someone could float the contact info of the NCsoft equivalent of Zwillinger (i.e. the NCsoft Community/Public Relations people) to us so that we could echo it one link closer?

Like everyone else, I'm really hoping that it comes to pass sometime in 2012, and sooner rather than later.
I'd be happy with an option like that too. However, I personally would still like to see some game cards out there for cash purchase.

When I run to the game store, that means I have money to burn, and an impulse buy like game point cards are an easy sell for me, not just for gift cards for others but for myself as well. I'm very tight about how much of an impact I have on our credit card, and mostly use cash I specifically set aside for my day to day expenses. I also portion in a bit to save for stuff/spend depending on my mood. (basically I'm more inclined to use cash where possible, and avoid using the credit card unless it's needed- and frankly, game points aren't generally 'needed').

tl;dr Game cards are easier for me and I'm more inclined to use then than purchase points online.

That's exactly my thoughts, and I mentioned them earlier this year after Freedom came out. I was really hoping I'd see some by the holidays. Plus having game cards would keep "City of" a presence in the brick and mortar stores, which isn't to be underestimated. The game store I go to has a huge kiosk of game cards for tons of games, and they seem to be visited often.

Heck, I know I would have asked for Paragon Game cards on my wish list if they existed, and I usually don't put anything like that on my list (if I get a game card of some kind, they're easily affordable and I buy those myself).
  14. So I got a couple of pre-paid game cards for friends and whatnot over the holidays. I would have LOVED to put some Paragon Points cards in my wife and son's stockings.

As others have suggested, I bought a pre-paid credit card (which cost $5 and some change extra to have made- where most game cards are for the value you pay, plus tax) to give to the boy so he could buy some in-game stuff (he's premium 'til he gets a job and has enough money)

After debating it with myself, I figured he probably wouldn't spend it on the game if he just had a card to use on anything, so went into his acct and added the points myself last night.

He hasn't logged in to find them yet, and I look forward to his reaction

All the same, Paragon REALLY needs to come out with game cards. I don't want to spend five dollars and change extra for a thirty dollar card when I could just buy two game cards for fifteen plus tax to get the same result.

I don't know what the cost/profit ratio is on the various game cards but I think, especially with this new Freedom system, Paragon would stand to gain a lot from it that they otherwise wouldn't. I know I'd pick up a $15 dollar card for my premium 2nd account from time to time when I have spare cash (I know this because I do it now, just not for City of... because they don't have any.)

    Just sayin'.

    Xmas Geek Swag?

The complete Flash live action series.

The complete (Lynda Carter) Wonder Woman live action series.

The complete Monty Python collection (been hoping for this one forever, and seeing as how I'm just finishing up my b'day present of the complete Kids in the Hall series...)

The whole run of The Cape (it was cheesy but a guilty pleasure. Just wished they actually gave it some kind of ending...)

A TON of other, less iconic geeky movies like Coraline, Chocolate (the martial arts movie), Zombieland, etc.

My wife made out like a bandit on the anime geek scale though. A lot of Full Metal Alchemist stuff (figures and such- I got her Edward's pocket watch for her birthday) A bunch of anime DvD's (like FMA: Brotherhood, and Black Butler- neat series if you haven't seen it).

The best thing I got was a drama-free holiday. I don't know how it was done but I'm sure it was done very carefully LOL

Anyway, we basically got a lot of DvD's we're going to be spending this next year watching, if we don't burn through them over our holiday vacations

Glad to see a lot of other folks getting great hauls too! Hope everyone had a good one!

Sounds more like a "perfect storm", given the frequency and variety of seemingly unrelated hints, all which point toward this very crucial point in time.

I'm probably wrong (I haven't played as far along in the story as many of you), but my gut has long told me the Coming Storm isn't just one thing.
I agree with you there, and I think (just my opinion) that the Praetorian Hami, the Shard, and even the Incarnate system itself, along with other factors including the SSA's, are what's going to lead to it. Emperor Cole is just a red herring .

I honestly see the SSA's as a guide to bring the characters into the mythos itself with the NPC's and the factions so when the Coming Storm arrives they're more invested in the storyline and those in it. It seems they're making more of a push to get folks to learn and care about the world and those in it (with mixed results depending on the forum threads you keep up with).

Wouldn't surprise me if the SSA's are a barometer of sorts, that will reveal more information and become more 'crucial' to the events as the story unfolds and leads to "The Coming Storm".

This is, of course, speculation on my part. However, the current SSA's are establishing a timeline using your leveling as the gauge on the time period, including the conceptualization of the 'Shining Stars' arc. I wouldn't be surprised as more of the SSA's are made, they repeat this to enforce that sense of time. Even Oroborus views it from that perspective, and I imagine as they update old zones and story arcs they'll use the same method, eventually making a more comprehensive timeline for folks to follow. Heck, I've even seen the tips taking that route (where Frostfire starts out as a master planner then learns better and seeks to become a hero, for just one example- though they're far from perfect and make most folks seem unbalanced at best if you ask me).

So, will the Shard play into it? Undoubtably. If Dark Astoria plays into future events, and is being revamped for that purpose, I would be let down if they let the Shadow Shard fall to the wayside, and I think our Dev's are better, and smarter, than that.

Will we like the results? Who knows. For me so far, it's been mixed emotions and a hell of a ride, either way

I just hope they find a way of writing that make the story poignant without feeling like they need to put words into our character's mouths. Though I doubt there's any mechanic they can invent that can fix that and have the story progress. Ya' take the good and the bad, I suppose.
  19. Good question, and topic

I have a LOT of character's, at least one of every AT naturally played to over 30 (and most at 50- been playing a long time and love alts). No two are exactly alike in the way I play them. If one gets too close to feeling like another one usually goes away.

A lot of their playstyle comes from the 'personality' they develop as I create and level them. For example (trying to give at least two per AT):

My Stone/Stone/Earth Tank is kinda like Ben Grimm (Yeah yeah, hold yer horses, I'm gettin' there! *Wham!!*) Doesn't have teleport but swift well slotted and a few sets to speed him up. Took it on him once and hated it. Respeced out first chance I had. My WP/Mace/Energy Tank is much more dynamic. Still figuring out how my Invul/Titan/? Tank feels.

I have an NRG/NRG/Force Blaster is a whole hearted crazy Blapper, and the closest thing I have to a 'superman' style character (he's surprisingly survivable). My Ice/Devices/Munitions Blaster on the other hand plays up to his straightforward ranged damage and control capabilities.

My namesake character is a Claws/Invul/Body Scrapper but uses stealth and speed tactics on the battlefield (kind of like a Stalker before Stalkers existed). My BS/Regen/Dark plays much more straightforward, but his personality and 'gimmicks' are in his costume(s) for me

My Elec/Elec/Psi Controller plays more like one would imagine a Tank plays. Gather aggro up behind a wall to clump them up. Lay down everything I have and keep them sapped/held/sticky and confused 'til they fall. Conversely, my Mind/Storm/Fire Controller plays more like what Controllers are expected to play like. On the other hand my Ill/Rad/Primal Kitsune is just pure chaos and crazy.

My Sonic/Sonic/Power Defender is more like a front line Scrapper that has ranged attacks, while my FF/Ice/Power is a more traditional ranged Defender type with medicine and leadership skills.

That's the traditional hero AT's at any rate. Similar approaches are taken with the traditional villan AT's (I have an MM that taunts and uses his pets to Tank things in the thick of the fight, while my other is the master hovering above the battlefield tossing debuffs and directing his army).

The tl;dr version: playstyle can vary widely between characters if you take their powersets and individual 'personalities' into account and adjust play and power choices accordingly. The way I see it, even if you have played, Invul, for example, it can have a very different feel between characters depending on the personality and the melee that goes along with it. Throw in different pool powers and one could be so distinct from the other the only way you could see the similarity in powersets is from the icons in their tray.

    Hope I've helped!

  21. I learned a long time ago, for my own sanity, that I look at responding and/or posting on the forums is an isolated event. Every time. I will respond within a OP that is mine if I think there's something worth responding to, and will only post if I think I have something positive, and relevant, to contribute to any other post in any given thread.

The irony that I have discovered is, more often than not, the less response you get, the more most folks probably agree with you because they don't have anything to argue about, and therefore don't post anything.

While that usually vaults your post or desire into anonymity, all I hope for is that someone who has power to do something about it (forum 'celebrity'- and I say this without malice as there are those who deserve the nomenclature- or Developer) sees it and groks its merit, thereby supporting its cause and making it happen.

There have been things, over the years, that I have championed or posted in support of that have actually seen the light of day. I won't even begin to imply in the slightest I achieved them. I spend more time enjoying the game than arguing the merit of this or that to earn that title. I toss my ideas or support into the ether and am pleasantly surprised if it falls on anything other than deaf ears. However, that may make me easy to impress... so sue me.

My rule of thumb is "Am I making a positive and/or useful contribution with this post?" if not, I don't bother. I can spend all night on the internet arguing with folks, that's easy... what's hard is positing and idea or supporting something someone else posted without hitting a land mine, or worse, being big enough to ignore the arguments thrown your way.

Just my 2 cents it's maintained my sanity (though not proclivity) as a poster over the years.

I pretty much feel the same way. I really think this, and other similar powers would be a great solution to "weather" in Paragon, even better because we get to control what we see so it fits our characters/theme/mood, etc.

A Storm character that can make it rain, snow, etc. would eat these types of cosmetic power options up just for thematic reasons. I have a character that changes costume every season as he is the embodyment of each season (BS/Regen as a youthful spring with a bright green 'Autumn' trail aura, a mature summer with a sunsword and gold highlights, an older and wiser Autumn look with the petals colored to look like fallen leaves- use the thorn blade for bare branches, and an oakey wizened winter with the snowstorm aura and the organic sword colored to look like snow and ice formed on a darkened blade). His name is Parsley Sage (and one of my SG mates has a Rosemary Ann Thyme plant 'troller as his ally).

Anyway, I think 'instant snowstorm' is a window into an option many of us have been wishing for a long time. I tossed in the 'sepia' and 'black and white' options because I have a few characters I'd set that to all the time if I could as well for thematic reasons. I'd pay for a whole 'weather pack' or 'mood setting' pack if they'd let me. Hell they could make it two different packs

One with weather (birds chirping a bit brighter, rain, snow, leaves falling, etc)

One with moods (sepia tone (with and without film grain), black and white (with and without film grain), grindhouse, even a 'freem' theme would work here!

Honestly, these are things I'd pay for. Stuff they wouldn't include in the game otherwise because they were a little 'niche' or 'specific' and with weather Posi said long ago wouldn't be worth it because there wasn't a way they could do it and make it 'fun' as well as visual... well I'd pay for it. Some of it already exists in some form or another.

So shut up and take my money!!
  23. I own and have read both novels The Web of Arachnos and The Freedom Phalanx and in turn read them to my wife when she started playing (she likes when I read 'cause I 'do the voices'- a trait I've started to do with Story Arcs and TF's from time to time for the rest of my SG at 'most of' their request ). Having read those gives me a lot of the background behind those characters, so yes, I care. For some more than others, of course. Positron and Synapse in particular.

These SSA's reference those books a LOT, and also reference the City of Heroes comics (which you can dowload for free here!) However, while these resources are available most folks, especially newer players, have no clue they exist. I think it would be nice if more of this was somehow incorporated into the in-game lore before leading up to this for those who didn't read the books. However, you can run some of the arcs through the Menders in Oroborous, but they don't give a lot of information if you haven't read the stories first (Except the Smoke and Mirrors one by Troy Hickman, which is awesome!)

Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is that there's lore out there for those who care enough to look, though I agree I wish there was more, but I'm sure there's a whole 'time and development' thing about that too.

Funny thing is, they try and incorporate them into the storyline, like Manticore in the Shining Stars arc, and folks complain about that too... Damned if you do, damned if you don't, I guess
  24. Title says it all. I'd pay good points for a permanant "Instant Snowstorm" toggle power. I'd also pay points for a similar "Falling Leaves" (autumnal) power and a sound-oriented "Birdsong" spring power.

Of course with the conditional Null the Gull option for folks to not see it for those with less powerful graphic systems.

I'd just really like to see more weather/story oriented visuals like this. Oooh, thinking of that, maybe have black and white and sepia tone filter options for golden age or noir style heroes? They already exist in game with Oroborous and the like, just have an option to make them perma on a character if they want it, to see the world through 'their eyes'.

Anyway, I love snow, and where I live I don't see it often. The first time I saw snow in this game was standing near a Winter Lord by accident, then found out about the Instant Snowstorm.

Anyway, those are my thoughts.. hope the Dev's consider making it a purchaseable power.
