  1. Now I have to watch my favorite movie (Patch Adams) to remember exactly how Patch's speech during the board of review went. That was my favorite scene from that movie, especially when the guy who was the head of the review board says "...and Dean Walcott, in the future, it would be better if you yourself would practice a little *checks paper* 'excessive happiness'."

Although, now that I think about it, my favorite line is actually from a different scene.

    ***Spoiler Alert***

Patch is ready to pack his bags and leave medical school because Carin got killed by one of the people at the Gesundheit Institute (his rennovated-old-house-now-free-hospital, which was actually not as grand as it sounds). Patch's school roommate, Mitch, watches him clear out his locker and stands in front of him, blocking his way, and tells him that he can't leave. Patch speculates that Mitch just wants to prove that he's better than Patch, and says what he thinks Mitch wants to hear and asks if he can leave now.
The following line is Mitch's: "You know Ms. Walker in 305? She doesn't eat. Now, I've studied, I've done procedures, and I guarantee that I could out-diagnose any attending in this hospital. I know everything there is to know about medicine. But I can't make her eat. You have a gift. You have a way with people. And if you leave I can't learn this way."

In this case, wouldn't it be closer to say "talking out the mouth of your side"? I know it's the side of her head and not the side of her body, but still....
  3. *is too busy staring at Motorheart's sig to notice*

I get the first quote, but not the last one...
  4. If this was on the Infinity server, then I've seen him too. I've seen someone on Infinity with that description and name. I don't think I've laughed that hard since. That name/costume combo was awesome!

I've got a few names that I consider to be completely awesome, but the one that stands out to me most right now is my level 50 controller, Femaelstrom

I named her before GR was announced. I tell everyone who asks/jokes about it, but no one believes me.

Just recently, I made another controller named American Pi and she's doing great so far. I'd actually been thinking about that name for a while, and only used it because I couldn't come up with anything else for an earth/storm controller that didn't sound totally goofy.

Other names that I have that I can think of right now:
Spirit in the Sky (yes, I like using song titiles)
    Sol Sister (bright-colored afros ftw!)
Lady Arachne (on the Infinity server, since another was already mentioned)
Operative Thorogood (George Thorogood and the Destroyers sang "Bad to the Bone")
Lucretia MacEvil (Blood, Sweat & Tears song, which I love to death)
Angel of Migranes (based on an older Farside cartoon that I still laugh about)

Recently released names from characters I never played (only the ones I can think of right now):
Femininja (trying to follow up on the success of Femaelstrom)
Dark and Nerdy (a really smart defender. I've got her geeky costume on file somewhere...)

I know that those are short lists, but my memory for character names really sucks, especially since I've made so many (there was one 6-week period where I made a new character every time I played ).

If there's a point to this post, it's pretty much the same one that I've made before, so just scroll up and look so that I won't have to make this post even longer that it already is.

I suggest the company send a poll to each game subscriber via e-mail regarding this subject.
How is a player base cross-section based on forum posters different in accuracy from a player base cross-section based on poll answerers?

How is it even possible to get an "accurate representation of the player base as a whole"? At best you would only get an accurate representation of players who care enough about this issue to respond to a forum thread/e-mail poll. If you found that most people don't respond to this question, it would indicate that this is largely a non-issue for most people, or they don't care enough either way to voice their opinion.

Speaking of voicing opinions, in my opinion, there aren't enough players who have thought about this issue to even have an opinion on it. I hadn't thought about it until I saw this thread. Before, I just took it for granted that our names would stay the way they are, especially since I've seen a few comments in "CO sux" threads about how ugly their names look. I must point out that this was never the main topic of any of those threads, nor would a group of people who dislike CO be considered an accurate representation of their player base, but after thinking it over I have decided to oppose such a change here in CoX, even if it is only for personal reasons (those being that 1. I like the satisfaction of having a unique name, 2. I think that character@global looks ugly, and 3. having to see character@global would ruin the feeling of being a superhero/supervillain by constantly reminding me that I was only playing a game).
  6. I don't currently have any disturbing characters (although I might have to fix that now), but one of my bro's characters is really disturbing in a "oh my god that shouldn't be that funny but i kind-of think it is so now i need therapy" kinda way.

The character's name is Orphan Eater and his description (which I must have mostly blocked from my consciousness as a self-defense mechanism) is a really sick and twisted nursery rhyme. The only bit I can recall right now is "Hush little baby, don't you weep / Too much extra water makes the steak sauce weak."

Why doesn't he keep demented stuff like that in his head like everyone else instead of showing it off?
    Wait.... That doesn't sound right....
  7. As mentioned on the first page of this thread, forum-posters and HeroCon attendees are not a good representation of everyone who plays this game. However, I find that concept to be similar to saying that people who vote are not a good representation of the entire population. While either statement may be true, the people voting on decisions (or discussing things with devs/on forums) are the only ones with their opinions out there where others can see them. A strong opposition to an idea is no good if you keep it to yourself.

I am STRONGLY opposed to non-unique names. I like knowing that I'm the only one on my server with a certain character name. Sometimes, I feel proud of my creativity in coming up with a great character name. Other times, I feel like I'm pounding my head on a brick wall when I can't think of anything. When that happens, I just save the character's costume and put the concept under "to be named" in my brain. Most of the time, I come up with a decent name in a couple days. If I can't, I go back to other costumes I've saved and think about using one of those on my current concept character. This usually works, and I come up with a name. I've gotten to the point where, using the methods I've described, I can come up with a name for any given character by the end of the week 90% of the time.

I tend to go through names quickly, since I've got alt-itis out the wazoo, but I still love the unique names. If I had to be Somebody@So-and-So, I don't know that I would stay. There aren't any superheroes in any stories named Somebody@So-and-So. Forcing my characters to use such a name would ruin the feel of the game, and make it feel more gimmicky than a bad sci-fi/horror film.

*Obligatory disclaimer that the above is my opinion stated in as polite a manner as possible. Usual request for responses to be as polite as possible as well.*

    Your 1 thing?

Aside from all the other stuff I've commented on in various threads (note to self: learn how to post links to other threads in replies), I would absolutely LOVE to see Illusion control for Dominators. I can see how the devs would be hesitant to give a Dominator so many minions, but it really seems that Illusion would be much better on Dominators than it is on Controllers, simply because it wouldn't be the character's only way to do damage. Having an assault secondary with the Illusion primary would make Ill/?'s much more playable (especially solo). I also want to make an evil trickster type character, and mind control just isn't gonna cut it for my concept. So.... Any time now....

    Plots and Plans

Yes yes yes plz!!!! This would be especially good if we could get the lead/clues at lower levels too (I'm incredibly bored with the low level content).

An interesting thought occurred to me as I was reading this thread: Could the missions be chained? For example, you get your lead and your clues, you get the I-put-it-together-so-I'll-do-this-to-finish-it mission, and the mission gives you another lead to continue the story (or to start another, related story).

To use an example already given, after you defeat the Skulls' leader and stop the ritual, you examine the book he was using and discover that it looks like a book of Circle of Thorns incantations, rather than ones the Skulls would use. You then have to find more clues about why the Skulls have this book in the first place, what the Circle of Thorns were planning to do once the death god was summoned, and the Circle's next move now that you've stopped the Skulls.

In this case, it turns out that the Circle realized that the incantations were dangerous, but they wanted the death god to be summoned so that they could control it. They realized that if they let the Skulls summon the death god with Circle incantations, it would be under Circle control rather than Skulls control, and they could use it to smite their enemies and gain immortality. Now that the Skulls have been stopped, the Circle has made a deal with another gang who will summon the death god using a copy of the incantation they gave the Skulls earlier in exchange for a large financial reward.

In order to make sure that everything works out, some of the Circle's mages will be present to oversee the ritual and guard against intrusion. Your task is to stop the ritual and defeat the Circle of Thorns mages who are present. Sounds like the last one, right? Well, this time one of the mages reveals that as long as the master copy of the incantation is intact, the Circle will keep trying to summon the death god. This would serve as another lead/clues set up, which would result in a mission where you go destroy the master copy.

All in all, I think that the idea of contact-less missions is one of the best that the player base has ever come up with, and it would definitely make this game more interesting, especially if it ended up being an alternate to other game content, they way MA was supposed to be, only this time you don't have to move into a certain building to do it. You could spend your time doing contact missions, or lead/clues missions, or some of both. Either way, I hope this is already in the works with Going Rogue, since it definitely should be. If not, I could see "Plots and Plans" being the title and content of a future Issue (hopefully the next one). This is just too good an idea to pass up.

    Kheldian naming?

    Okay, I'll join in.

I only have one of each, and neither of them have backstories (although I've been thinking of one for my Warshade...).

    Peacebringer: Clair de Lune

Aside from the fact that I absolutely love that song (even though it's in the classical music genre), it means "moonlight", which seemed appropriate.

    Warshade: Violet Angel

I wanted an odd angelic character, and this name fit quite nicely, especially since some people (including myself when I haven't played this character for a while) misread "Violet" as "Violent". The backstory I'm thinking about would probably require me to read into the Nictus to see if it fits with the CoX canon, so I'll hold off posting it until then.

After reading the backstory that The_Mercsman has for his warshade (that was really good, btw), I feel motivated to come up with backstories for my Kheldians. So...

    Coming Soon!
    (if anyone cares)
  11. Update on uncontrollable minions:

I was playing my Bots/Thermal MM yesterday, and I discovered that putting one of the fire shields on a bot brought that bot back under my control. I'm not sure if using a targeted heal on a minion will have the same effect or not. This warrants further testing.

A word longer than 100 characters? In a MMOG? I wouldn't even expect a word that long at a Mensa meeting. Not that I've ever been to a Mensa meeting...
  13. I have not had any problems with this so far. My biggest issue is that sometimes when pets zone with you they don't stay under your control. When this happens, they still follow you around and attack stuff for you, but you can't dismiss them or see them in the "Pets" window. This is very annoying, especially since mine all end up on Defensive/Follow when they do this (at least, I think that's what they're on), and end up getting wiped out by the first spawn I pass.

The only way I've found to fix it without rezoning is to use one of the upgrade powers on the wayward minion(s). Unfortunately, this only brings the targeted minion back under my control, even though it upgrades the whole group and thus uses a huge chunk of endurance. I usually suck down several blue inspirations to finish this if my whole group of minions decides to stop listening to me.

If I can get to whatever mission I'm doing, I usually regain control of them upon entering it. I'm just tired of having them aggro street mobs that are 3 levels higher than me as I race to get to the mission entrance. Death is not fun, and makes trekking across the map to a mission that much more annoying. On the plus side, this will only happen once, since the minions will die when I do, and I'll wait to resummon them until I get inside.

In short, MM pets are really buggy right now. Hopefully, they will be fixed "Soon".

    Owww.... That was bad....

As for playing "evil" characters, the way I deal with it (usually) is to make them evil in a business-like way: They're evil because that's where the money is, and they couldn't care less about morals. To me, this is the scariest kind of evil there is, since they know that they're doing something wrong, but they don't care because of all the benefits they get from it.

It's either that, or the character is just plain crazy. This could be caused by any number of reasons, but I doubt if any of them really know why they're crazy (a useful excuse for not writing a detailed backstory ). I seem to be shifting towards the "crazy" characters of late... this may be cause for concern....

I also have a few "revenge on society" characters, and one who was cursed and, through various attempts to remove the curse, ended up so stupid that she can't tell right from wrong, so she just does whatever she wants (she's really fun to play, since I can use her to ask stupid questions and then claim an "RP moment").

I suppose the whole issue with people making evil characters as opposed to good ones boils down to "if it ain't broke, don't fix it". Good characters (heroes) are doing what they should be doing; protecting civilians from people doing what they shouldn't. They are, essentially, the "ain't broke" kind of characters. Playing a "broke", or villainous, character without a reason for them to be the way they are leaves people (especially ones with a strong sense of morality) with a "why" vacuum. They want to know why the character "broke" in the first place so that either 1) the character can be "fixed", or 2) they can avoid "breaking" that way themselves/prevent others from "breaking" that way. I guess people want to believe that other people are inherently good and that it would take a lot for someone to be evil. Since people who are evil just to be evil undermine this philosophy, there is a strong drive to find some reasoning behind the "evilness" of certain people. This translates to digital people as well, in most cases.

At least, that's how I see it.

(I know, it was too long as usual, and on a subject that was not the thread topic, but this subject has always interested me, so I thought I'd hijack the thread for a bit. I'm sorry if this disrupts the thread entirely, and I'll probably start a separate thread on this topic as soon as I can figure out where to put it.)

On the topic of the thread (yes, I actually can write on-topic posts), uberGRATZ on your first lvl 50 villain! The VEAT's really are awesome, so I recommend trying one as soon as you can find a good reason to be evil again.
  15. Because unless they immediately applied that rate to every single current player, people would get mad and leave?

If they didn't, they would be taking a heck of a risk to try to expand their player base. Generally, giving discounts to new people that irritate the older players gives you less players than you had at the beginning, as well as fewer older players recommending the game in the first place.

Of course, if they did give everyone that rate by extending existing subscriptions or something, it would be okay as long as they could live with losing 1/3 of their current revenue (until they get more players, of course).

This. I always do this, so that if someone says "I didn't know you were this/that! I wanted a whatever/something!" I can either tell them to read the search comment next time, or if they go on with a "All Defenders should heal!" or something I can quietly facepalm and tell my friends about the AT-prejudiced moron I teamed with and have a good laugh (granted, there are some statements like that that are true, but there are many many more that are not).

  19. Will the Epic AT's be able to switch sides? If so, how would one explain a Peacebringer doing this? If not, what game-world explanation would be given for them not being able to do so?

Side note to Hellsminon_CoH: That has got to be the creepiest avatar I've ever seen. I'm pretty sure that I've been unfairly kicked from a team for doing this. I say "unfairly" because, as far as I could tell, when I used my holds and immobilizes on a group of baddies that the tank hadn't quite grouped it was okay because no one faceplanted. No one told me that they were having an issue with the fact that I was doing this. I even thought that, since no one was dying, I was helping. Apparently there was a lot of private chatting about what I was doing between the other team members (most of them were in the same SG), and they ultimately decided to kick me after a brief "You're slowing us down too much, so we'll see you later." It took a while (and repeated tells to my friend on the team) to figure out what the issue was.

My point, in relation to this quote, is that if this is an issue and no one tells the Troller, barring difficulties for which the Troller is obviously responsible, the Troller in question won't learn unless someone educates them. (This is basically a reiteration of the "Communication is Important" point which has already been made several times here).

Seven word summary of what I just said: They won't know unless you tell them.
  22. That's what I get for using the "New Posts" search and not paying attention to where I end up.

I don't have any characters on Freedom, and I don't have any time to get one to a helpful level, even if I spent every spare minute playing it (school sux that way).

Best of luck to you. I'm sure it will be a blast!
  23. I'm going to make an effort to merge the OP's topic with the other topic that mysteriously popped up in this thread.

On teams, I usually have no problem with being referred to according to the gender of my character, since they're all female and so am I (this was a decision I made on purpose to avoid the kind of confusion that could result from me playing a male character). However, since this is a computer game, and since computer games have a higher percentage of male players than female players, I occasionally run into someone insisting that I'm a guy, even after I tell them I'm not.

Why do they do this? They don't know me in RL, so how would they know? I'm around my dad and my brother more than my mom (even though we all live in the same house), so sometimes I "sound" like a guy. I'm also fairly into sci-fi movies and books (although not the military sci-fi books), which leads some to dispute my proclaimed gender (there are several other facts that would "rule against" my femininity, but I don't want this post to be my usual wall of text). I've had several people conclude that I'm a gay guy, and even one who was sure that I "used to be a guy". This gives me endless headaches when it happens, and usually leads to me leaving the team.

So please, if someone corrects your use of their gender-specific pronoun when you're on a team with them, use what they want you to. Don't insist that they're not what they say they are. You just end up looking like a jerk.
  24. I might have missed this in the OP, but which server is this on?
  25. So, basically, you're going to make them smell bad when they're dead?

Blood Brother Chopper: "Good God! What is that---*gasp* Someone killed Fred!"

While they're at it, when there's a "defeat so-and-so and guards" mission, how about making the guards actually guard the guy it says they're guarding, or at least get really pissed (read, aggroed) when you kill so-and-so. It would make a lot more sense than just having them stand around upstairs, since they would obviously hear their boss threatening/being killed by you.
