Yes there's at least a long standing player-accepted "theory" that the 2 billion INF cap has something to do with software-based data types. As the theory goes 2 billion was picked by the Devs simply because that value can be cleanly represented by a single 32 bit signed Integer. It does admittedly seem reasonable to accept that.
But you have to remember back when this game was being launched almost 8 years ago 2 billion INF was a totally astronomical amount of INF to horde on one character. Without any market and a manual INF trading cap set at 9999 per trade the idea of being able to accomplish trades in the millions let alone in the billions was practically unthinkable. Basically this game existed for many years under the working paradigm that 2 billion was a far larger amount than anyone ever would or could need.
Obviously with the introduction of the market and IOs all that changed. From a coding point of view it would not be impossible to raise the cap. Depending on exactly what data type they did in fact use changing the cap could be more or less problematic. But no matter the details the INF cap could be increased beyond 2 billion if the Devs were willing to spend the time on it.
That leaves us with the real question: Will the Devs ever decide that it's worth the effort to increase the cap? Maybe, but I don't think it'll happen anytime soon despite the current market realities. You have to remember that even though there are probably several hundred players out there who routinely throw around billions of INF there are still many thousands of others who for whatever reason will probably never see 100 million INF on their characters much less 2 billion. For the overwhelming majority of players the 2 billion cap will continue to be more than sufficiently high. Also when you consider the prices of some of the top PvP IOs the only reason they go for around 2-3 billion INF now is that they are pegged to the current cap. If you hypothetically increased the cap to 10 billion it's quite likely those top IOs would simply jump up in price to around 10 billion and stop again. There's no substantive reason to raise the cap other than to see the number get bigger - the intrinsic "value" of the most valuable things in the game would not change.
So while the INF cap could be increased I suspect the Devs have decided there's not enough justification for it yet, if ever. -
Yeah they're probably talking about Fort Trident and The Crucible. I've never really heard them called "True Alignment Lounges" by anyone in-game though. I suspect that's more like an official term the Devs would use to describe them.

Quote:You uh, you do realize that pets do more then just damage, right? I mean not all of them, obviously, but they uh, they are a good way away from just being 'glorified DoTs'. Hated that saying in other MMO's, hate it just as much here.Quote:At least in other games pets can actually keep up with you. In other games calling them a "glorified DoT" works.
Many Scrappers/Brutes can't really do anything else but run around chaotically like Fire Imps and damage things.
Ironically people who dismiss pets as one-trick ponies usually play characters who are themselves fairly one-dimensional. -
Sounds like a goofy attempt to turn Fanboys or Big Bang Theory into a reality TV show.
Seems like this could range from being completely stupid to mildly amusing in a "Mystery Science Theater" sort of way. *shrugs* -

Quote:When will people learn that basically -anything- the Devs do will only be liked by a fractional subset of the playerbase?Sadly I could think of 5 must-have superhero themed sets I'm still waiting to see that are more appropot than Imperial Dynasty.

The irony of Bug Hunter from the Devs' point of view is that the more of these they hand out the more they tacitly acknowledge how buggy their game really is.
The concept behind Bug Hunter (as a reward to players for reporting serious, exploit-level bugs to the Devs) should have never been expressed as a public character-based badge in the first place. That implementation was fundamentally flawed for many different and terribly obvious reasons. The Devs should have figured out a better kind of reward to account for these things. An excellent example would have been a grant of a certain number of months free subscription to the game, the number of months commensurate with the severity of the bug as determined by the Devs. Almost anything like this would have been far more acceptable because it would have kept the entire idea of people finding bad bugs completely out of the public limelight where it belongs. There's a reason the Devs don't like to openly report exploit fixes - why on Earth they decided to break their own policy by granting public badges to players which only serve to advertise the need for such fixes is perplexing to say the least.
To me Bug Hunter is ultimately a sad footnote of a Dev "good intention" which ended up being expressed in a terribly ham-fisted and inappropriate way. -
Quote:I agree keeping Coyote in Outbreak does now effectively leave him in a sort of limbo. But I'm assuming they had to do that so that anytime in the future if anyone who logged out in Outbreak ever starts playing again and wants to actually get out of the zone they can play though the original tutorial as usual. I figure it must be pretty lonely for him now.Yeah, I found the same to be true of Breakout, but unless they moved Coyote to another zone like they did BAB, he's still in a sort of limbo.

Quote:Yeah it would have been nice if these new phoenix wings had at least the same two options that the celestial ones do. It's not too bad with the phoenix wings while flying but when I'm standing on the ground I feel like I'm wearing some kind of elaborate plumage like a Brazilian carnival dancer.I guess I should have been more exact there. The celestial wings have an option to open or close depending on if you're in an aerial animation or not. I cannot see a reason why the The animation bones, key frames and tween frames of said animation cannot be applied to the Phoenix wings without any changes.

If I was considering trying out a new MMO and one of the first things I learned about it was that they had just closed any of their servers I would automatically assume the game was dying and probably stay away from it. It doesn't really matter what the reason for the server shutdowns are, even if they end up being good for the game in the long run. It's a matter of perception and the only thing I really think of when a game loses servers is that it's a "bad" thing.
About the worse thing this game could do marketing-wise is to start off by doing things that makes it look like it's about ready to go out of business. -
-
Just as an FYI I left a character in Outbreak before the new tutorial launched. As far as I can tell they left the entire zone active and intact. It was probably easier to leave it "abandoned-in-place" for any characters like mine than to worry about how to turn off the whole zone.

Quote:Eh, I guess I'm not really blaming the show per se. It's just that I consider myself relatively aware of various "alternative" TV shows and movies and somehow after years of zipping around the Internet reading all sorts of reviews and forums and what-not I somehow remained more or less completely ignorant of a show that I probably would have otherwise enjoyed. You're blaming the show for the network's advertising decisions. A network that has historically made poor programming decisions and has been in the toilet since Friends finally got its unfunny hinder off the air.
Not exactly sure who's fault that was but again I'll speculate that if I somehow missed the existence of this show then it's likely many other potential fans have missed it too. Thus the possible reason why it's close to cancellation. *shrugs* -

Now that they have the "doppelganger" tech having a dark clone of your character as a Tier 9 pet might be interesting. *smiles impishly*
-
I could see this tech being useful for physically impaired people and maybe for some types of GUI-lite games like first person shooters. I just don't think it would give you the kind of precise control you'd really need for a MMO. Every time you'd look around to check out your HPs or buff indicators you'd potentially move chaotically around or mess up your targeting.
Maybe this'll get better in the future, but I just don't see it being worthwhile now for something like CoH. -
Quote:Sure treating different players differently based on real world currency exchange rates sucks. You mean along with overcharging off the EU playerbase for buying points?
But there are people in the US who also agree or disagree on whether the prices this game charges for things is fair regardless. You're quibbling over a variable that is not significant - as a US player I might decide that the prices are too high even WITHOUT worrying about paying with a different currency. *shrugs* -

Quote:Well at least you have the -option- to do that even if it's not cheap.Only if you have enough $$$$$$$
I'm at the T6, no way i can get this in time cause i can't afford to waste about $200 or more just to get these costume sets.
Before CoH:Freedom people who were years behind on vet awards had NO option to get the latest stuff. *shrugs* -
Quote:Might be. It's as good an explaination as any. There's also the link to Native-American shapeshifting into coyote-form that the Devs might have been inspired by as well.I'm assuming that the choice of Coyote over, say, a dire wolf or giant otter, is the Devs giving a nod to Kiyotee, a pretty active user during the CoH Beta who passed away shortly after launch.
We already know we're getting a Black Wolf pet via the upcoming Super Packs and they might have other types of animals planned for other future uses. Ultimately using the coyote (a 4 legged dog-like form) for this power was probably practical for multiple reasons. -
Quote:If the Devs had any sense of humor they'd create another travel power that makes our characters look like this:I haven't tested it, but it sure as hell better include a temporary hover power that triggers when you run off the edge of a tall building, combined with a running-while-suspended-in-space-before-your-body-falls-away-followed-by-your-head-as-you-wave-goodbye animation or I'll never buy it!
and let us run like 200 mph. -
I'm not sure of the exact amount of bandwidth that typically gets used to run this game. But I seem to recall a recent thread that mentioned there were options that would allow you to cut off some of the data-mining type info that gets passed back to the servers. Maybe somebody knows more about that because that sounds like you could use that to minimize your traffic and maximize your time playing.
Good luck regardless. -
Quote:I suppose I'll have to check out the box sets of this show sometime. I think I kind-of, sort-of almost knew about this show but it has definitely been off my radar and I admittedly knew practically nothing about it before this thread.....so why is it on hiatus???
Why is this show so close to being cancelled??
All I can say is if this show is as good as people here say it is then it has at least completely failed in the "encouraging new people to watch it" department. That's probably why it's going to get cancelled no matter how good it is. *shrugs*
