When I (or most people) use the generic term "Devs" we are referring to "those people who are responsible for providing this game to us". Obviously the "marketing" people were involved in this particular issue, but making that distinction in this case doesn't really matter for the discussion at hand. *shrugs*

Quote:I understood the announcement. But straightforward and "easy peasy" for the masses? No, it's really not.I don't think so. I found the original announcement to be straightforward.
Pre-purchase with no free month and you'll get early access due to it being through their store (and so tied into the game). Pre-order through a retail outlet and no early access goodies, but you get the usual free month cause its a stand-alone box. Later, if you pre-purchased, you can pick up the goodies in a separate transaction just like they've done in the past. Easy peasy.
I'm sure they'll be delighted with extra money though.
Lewis
Straightforward would have been one product to buy with hardwired dates where different portions of that one single product would be unlocked, not three separate options/sub-products.
I'm pretty much convinced at this point that this product scheme was devised to motivate people like BrandX to double-pay.
Kudos to our Devs for figuring out a way for them to maximize profits. -
Quote:Perhaps that's the easiest explanation for this level of "complication".Seeing as how I want early access and want the up to date disk of GR...looks like NCSoft will be getting extra money from me!
I'm sure I won't be the only other like this, but will probably be the minority.
They're probably hoping enough people choose to double-pay to make it worth all this silliness. -
Well gods forbid this thing be instantly intuitive rather than having to think about which option is the 'better' option for 30 seconds. Just saying it seems like the Devs went out of their way to make something that should have been incredibly trivial as convoluted as realistically possible.
-
From a distribution point of view it'd probably be easier for the retail installation disk of GR to be a complete image of the entire game (CoH + CoV + GR) than just a 'patch' for GR, especially considering they are saying you need to have the base game to play with GR anyway.
Let's just say buying a new retail disk with just the patch of GR on it would be far less useful to anyone for any reason. *shrugs* -
Well I look at it this way: I hope that the animated tails we get here are an improvement over what they got in CO. But even if they aren't for some reason we're still going to get, at the very least, our old legacy tails with belts. I've been wanting tails and belts together as an option almost as much as animated tails themselves.
-
Quote:Frankly I consider this whole preorder scenario to be maybe one notch more convoluted than it really had to be.I will definitely be buying the Full version, not just the expansion (free month of game time and the item pack makes it a great value), but I don't understand why they are not offering a preorder for it? Seems strange to me.
But if the Devs want to make us play this shell game I guess I can put up with it. -
Been proposed many times over the years, at least as long as PBs and WSs have been in the game.
IIRC some Dev mentioned one time they didn't want to make badges out of those because they didn't want to limit kill badges to situations that required certain kinds of ATs to be around. Of course that statement was made long before things like the ITF made finding Quants/Voids possible without those certain ATs present.
Long story short I wouldn't mind seeing badges for those critters either, but I wouldn't hold my breath for them to happen any time soon. -
Quote:I hope you didn't think I was -seriously- complaining about this.Quote:So the supposed "downside" to this wonderful improvement I've been waiting 6 years for is that I'll have to pay for new tail changes to account for either type of tail (static or animated) and/or belt I'd want to use after a new costume change? I think being able to say "I can live with that" is probably the biggest understatement of the decade.
I can easily guarantee that I'll experiment with all the new tail/belt combo possibilities and make many costume edits with many alts with this regardless. Thanks for finally being able to work this in.
Most of my main characters have 30+ costume change tokens racked up, have access to the 57th month Vet award that provides a 50% discount on all tailor sessions and have 100s of millions of INF between them to spend. I'm pretty sure being "forced" to have to worry about a few costume changes is not going to be a real issue for me whether they give us yet another costume change token for this or not. -
Quote:It sounds like you think you were actually "tricked" into paying for CoV two years before it technically became free.i was wondering if after a short time if going rogue was going to be given to us free like COV was. honestly i cant get to excited to pay for something after what happened to those who got the last one for free after some of us paid full price for it!
People like you make baby Statesman cry... *sigh*
Yes Going Rogue will almost certainly become free at some point once it's run its course as a RETAIL expansion.
But like someone earlier pointed out your definition of "short time" better be rooted on a geologic scale. -
Eh, I guess part of my reasoning for downplaying the importance of the count badges is that now-a-days whenever I create a new character it has something like 30 or 35 badges automatically awarded to it (with all the Vet, MA and other account-wide badges). This means I automatically get at least the first two count badges with zero effort. Not much significance getting "milestone" type badges when I did nothing to actively earn them. Likewise my main badgers have had 500+ badges for years (and will likely be past 750 within days of I17's launch) so adding count badges at those levels don't really do much for me either. *shrugs*
The other part of my downplaying is that the only fundamental reason to worry about getting a particular "epic" count badge is to use as a metric for measuring badge related e-peen length. Let's face it, they're just there to be able to say to other people "I have such-n-such badge". Now obviously one could argue that you could do that with any hard-to-get badge, but that's really the -primary- reason why the count badges ever existed in the first place. They have no intrinsic value or justification beyond that. They are the quintessential e-peen badges. That just makes them seem an extra bit cheesy to me.
Am I looking forward to eventually having 1,000+ badges on my main badging characters? Of course I am.
But I didn't really need a new semi-artificial count badge to make that goal any sweeter for me. -
Quote:To clear up what BAB was saying about this the only reason anyone would have to "re-chose" a legacy tail for a character costume is if that costume ever got edited -after- I17 goes live. If you have a legacy tail right now for a costume and you decide to never edit it again then there's nothing you have to do.Not from what Babs said. You will need to go back into the tailor and chose the Legacy (non-animated) tails from the menu.
But yes, you will still be able to keep non-moving tails, if you so choose to. And, as a bonus, you can now have belts with them.
Over the years the Devs have shifted and changed many different costume items. They've even removed some original items from the editor, but not from the game itself. This means that as long as people have never edited their costumes since those changes then there are costumes out there that still have "deleted" items locked into them.
Of course its always possible that all old tails are going to be automatically removed from all characters the day I17 goes live, forcing everyone to go back to the editor to 'fix' that one way or the other. But if that happens that will pretty much be the first time anything drastically "automatic" like that has ever happened in the history of this game which makes me think it's a very unlikely possibility. -
Quote:Asking for an entire "tail attack" powerset might be incredibly wishful thinking. But maybe a new tail oriented power pool might be doable. The cool advantage of that is that as a power pool any existing character could respec into it.Well, we can't properly have bushy tails without a TAIL POWER SET, now can we!? Tail whip, tail spin, tail trip, tail....uh...snap.
Ooooh, I may be onto something here!
Imagine if we could have tails that looked like the dagger-tipped tails of the aliens from the Alien movies and were given a few key attack powers using them... -
Quote:So the supposed "downside" to this wonderful improvement I've been waiting 6 years for is that I'll have to pay for new tail changes to account for either type of tail (static or animated) and/or belt I'd want to use after a new costume change? I think being able to say "I can live with that" is probably the biggest understatement of the decade.Animated tails are not capes. They're nearly identical to how we do wings, but a much simpler rig. (Not too much more expensive than a bow when you really get down to it.)
They've also been put on their own costume node and will now show up under "Lower Body". Which will mean you can do a Belt and a Tail (animated or static) on the same character. Unfortunately, that means the tails under the belt category are being flagged as legacy. So if you want to keep your current, non-animated tail, you'll still need to go in and select that costume part from the lower body the next time you edit your costume at the tailor.
I can easily guarantee that I'll experiment with all the new tail/belt combo possibilities and make many costume edits with many alts with this regardless. Thanks for finally being able to work this in. -
Quote:Even if you don't factor in crossing over villains are currently less than 100 total badges behind heroes. If they're going to continue adding large numbers of badges like they're talking about with this Issue then it's conceivable heroes and villains who -don't- crossover may still be able to break the 1,000 badge point eventually.I understand that. The way I define villain is a character that is currently defined as a villain who never goes rogue or switches sides. lol
Then again, I don't know if switching sides affects badges in any way still.
Thematically speaking one of my two main badgers would probably -not- crossover if given the choice as a character so the question of badging without crossing over is actually of interest to me as well. I may end up having one of them crossover and the other not just to have both bases covered depending on how it's all going to work out. -
Quote:Translation: as long as you do it with a team size it wasn't technically intended for, at a level it wasn't intended for and sidestep the all the pesky 'content' then it's a easy TF.Takes 45 minutes on a team set to 3... Just do it on a 50... Its not that sucky as long as you are motivated and skip most of the missions.
I'm not suggesting that the Posi TF wasn't a horrible TF that desperately needed updating years ago. I'm just having some fun with the idea that your "solution" to the problem was basically to do everything against the intent of that TF that you possibly could. I'm laughing as much at the Devs for sticking us with a crap TF as I am at your cavalier attitude about beating it. -
Quote:Well Blondeshell (in another badge thread) estimated that crossing over for Going Rogue would allow heroes and villains to get up to about 810 badges each give or take. If we can assume (based on the wording of the I17 announcement) that we are going to get around 100 new exploration badges on top of that then it seems possible that we could find ourselves up to around 900 known badges by the time Going Rogue happens.Given the apparent increase in the developers' interest in Exploration Badges, one can assume the trend will continue to (or possibly, that this is a continuation of) the new zones that will be released in Going Rogue.
Between new Exploration Badges now, the new Going Rogue badges soon, and the presumed ability to switch sides and get all of their badges as well, having 1000 badges isn't really out of the question.
Therefore it would seem that 1,000 badges may be possible within a few Issues past GR which ought to give us at least another couple years' worth of play at the very least. -

Quote:I have to assume that since animated tails will represent at least some degree of extra graphics processing that the Devs will not 'force' everyone who wants a tail to upgrade to a moving one. I'm sure they will allow us to keep the old ones if we want just from that point of view alone.Yaaaay-! ... Wait, can we still keep out non-animated tails too or will the non-animated ones be replaced?
But also there's the obvious nod to allowing us to have as many options as possible. While I have alts who will likely instantly upgrade to the animated tails I could see where there might be characters out there who would want a 'fake costume' tail for concept reasons instead of a 'real living' tail. -
Quote:Well I strongly suspect animated tails will randomly slice through the backs of people's legs as they move around regardless. But I've been living with static tails stuck through my flying characters' legs for 6 years so I would much rather have these things moving with a bit of clippage than to not have them at all.Backpacks probably cause a lot more clipping issues than tails.
(This post brought to you by Conjecturing). -
Quote:Frankly now that you mention it it is kind of weird they managed animated tails before backpacks but what can we do.Tad 'meh' about the 'tails' thing, woulda been happier with backpacks, but all in all, I'm a happy camper and look forward to i17!
I've got alts who've been waiting for both for years so I guess one out of two is better than nothing. -
It's funny but I never thought those "count" badges made much sense, even from the beginning before Vet badges or anything like that. I just don't see the allure of a badge that I get just because I earn an X number of other badges. They seem more like "player/account badges" that have nothing to do with the individual characters in question. Let's put it this way: Does the US Army have any kind of award or medal you get -just- because you've earned a certain number of other unrelated medals? If they do I'd be kind of surprised.
Anyway it's not that big a deal and it's not like I'm mad they added more. Just saying I could have lived without them. At least I'll be getting the 500 count badge the instant I17 goes live and the 750 count probably within a day or two after that (with all the new explore badges). The only encouraging thing I see from them giving us a 1,000 count badge is that the Devs at least think the game will be around long enough for people to earn that one. -
Quote:Yes it would be unfortunate if they decided to compromise and made it so you could have capes or animated tails but not both.I just had a thought...
will animated tails count towards the 1cape rule?
I sure hope not, cause i'd be devastated if i cannot use the bat wings with a tail...
eidt: yes i can't type... *mutters*
I'm hoping that if tail animation was limited to generic movement cycles that they would allow us to have both at the same time. I agree it'd be amazing if these tails had full physics processing like wings and capes and got them to work with those, but I'm not going to assume that's the case until I see it. -

Quote:I've only been waiting 6+ years for animated tails myself.Neat info release! The new Dark Mirror enemy is what sparks my curiousity most, have to wait and see what that's all about, but the name is certainly interesting. Also really happy (being an SG of one) to see that I'll now be able to just email some cash from the rich K5K to my lesser toons who actually need the money. Brilliant.
Animated tails? Some peeps are gonna be over the moon over this, yet another Pony slipped under the radar by the good crew at Paragon Studios.
The thing no one has mentioned yet is if they've crammed this much goodness into I17 then I wonder what kinds of amazing things are left to flesh out Going Rogue?
