  1. I appreciate the attempt to clarify this auto promotion/demotion issue, but for some reason it still seems as clear as mud to me. It's almost like you'd need to keep an offline spreadsheet to track everyone if you wanted to get a solid idea of who'd be next in line to automatically get the Red Star. And that's of course assuming this convoluted system is in fact "Working as Intended" and has no bugs associated with it.

Ultimately it seems far easier to follow Shadow Ravenwolf's advice and try to avoid letting the system auto promote/demote anybody.

While it's true that if you know how to "play the market" it's relatively easy to make enough INF to buy anything you want some people find the whole idea of playing the market as frightfully dull and mismatched to the idea of playing a hero or villain. On the other hand some people might legitimately consider the "daily Hero/Villain merit" method for recipes to be slow and boring for its own obvious reasons. Fair enough.

To me the whole dailies aspect of the alignment missions simply provides yet another method for people to gain access to rare recipes. Having multiple ways to obtain things that appeal to different playstyles can only be considered a good thing for this game. Some people are willing to trade off time for certainty or time for money. These different methods each have their pros and cons. And afterall there's no rule that says you must like or use both methods.

If he ends up playing a character in this that's even vaguely similar to his "Captain Hammer: Corporate Tool" one then that'd pretty much be worth the price of the ticket alone.

I detailed EXACTLY what my situation was - did you even read my post?

Out of maybe 30+ attempts to play this game overseas (mostly tried in the evenings and/or "prime times" as far as a person living in Melbourne, Australia would be concerned) I've only been hit by the server maintenance once that I recall. This means that my average downtime in these timezones is around 3% of the time. To me that percentage is not worth whining about.

The only thing I see as "funny" around here is -anyone- whining about downtime here. *shrugs*

Just trying to make sure because there seems to be a lot of vagueness about all the "rules" related to this.

Ironically enough I can actually speak to this point. Even though I live in Florida I do a lot of international travel to places like Japan and Singapore. These areas happen to be in the same general time zones the OP claims to be from in his "location" setting. Out of several dozen trips and maybe 30-40 play sessions overseas in the last several years I think I've only been "inconvenienced" by the weekly maintenance once that I can remember. Not too bad really.

Have not done the math but I believe there are enough baddges in Praetoria to outweight the unobtainable seasonal badges and boost you over 1000.
Even though the Devs have not said it directly I think it's very likely that Primal Earth characters will be able to go to Praetoria fairly soon. If it doesn't happen in I19 it'll happen eventually, especially since at least some part of the Incarnate content was supposedly related to Praetoria in some form or fashion.

Basically this means that the window of opportunity for Praetorian badgers to surpass Primal badgers probably won't last much past the end of 2010. More power to anyone who wants to try to accomplish that before then.

Whatever the "newest best type of toon" is right now you can be sure the Devs -will- nerf it sooner or later. Even talking about things like this in the forums helps the Devs become aware of what needs to be taken care of.

It always amazes me that people who love to exploit FotM builds never seem to understand why the Devs' reaction to those builds is pretty much inevitable. *shrugs*

Then consider this: If you, a person who hasn't even worked with the code involved with this, can do this in less than a week why do you think people who've been working on this code for years -can't- do it?

    Quote:
Unless the code is built like a house of cards and any attempt to add or change it would break it entirely. So if they have the "if it ain't broke don't fix it" mentality with it, then that could stop it as well. But again, that can be fixed if it needed to be. Some other update might need to edit it and then hopefully they can add in the bulk slider when they do everything else.
The core of this game, if you go all the way back to its initial development, is at least 8+ years old. That might as well be an eternity as far as software technology goes. It's surprising how relatively inflexible huge applications become, especially when you've been adding bits to it piecemeal for years.

While I admire your blind enthusiasm I think you've greatly underestimated the situation in this case. You've included far too many "then a miracle occurs" steps in your wishful thinking. I realize you want this feature to happen (and I do too) but sadly it's just not as simple as you assume it is.

    Cheers

I don't think as of today it is possible.
But clearly the Devs put in the 1,000 count and 1,250 count badges to prepare for the future.

    Am I missing something?
Not having 1000 badges to get -yet- doesn't interest me as much as the Devs apparently slippping in another badge called Voyager, the 1,250 count badge.

Clearly whatever "testing" they did with this didn't catch the problem either during beta or since then.

I just was a little incredulous about Castle's claim about not being able to "replicate" this problem when apparently pretty much any player could manage that with a demorecord and a few minutes of time. Let's just say that his statement didn't really pass my initial "stink" test.

I have nothing against the actresses but the character of Yar was far more annoying to me than Troi in my book.

One of the weirdest cases of "actors trying out for roles different from the one they finally got" was when Charisma Carpenter was initially trying out for the role of Buffy in the Buffy the Vampire Slayer TV show and Sarah Michelle Gellar was trying out for the role of Cordelia Chase. That would've been a fairly different show with those two playing the opposite roles.
  15. I think we can safely say:

    1) There's plenty of comic book justification for having a "bulk" slider in this game.
    2) There's enough people who've suggested this over the years to make it a legitimate player desire.

But the real problem for the Devs boils down to the hardwired limitations of the player character models. The Devs have told us that they are just about at the limit of what they can do to allow for player customization of the body shapes. This is why it's been so hard for them to give us backpack/quiver/scabbard options for our backs because they lack the "connection points" to make it work.

They're likely at the point where to do a bulk slider properly it'd almost be easier for them to scrap the entire character model and animation system and start over from scratch. The chances of -that- happening anytime soon are quite probably nil. At this point we'd more likely see this happen in CoH2 than in this game.

Who knows: the Devs might be able to pull another miracle out of the hat of this aging game engine and manage to give us a bulk slider. But let's just say I'm certainly not going to be holding my breath for it.

Yeah I guess I never thought about it but that does sound rather anti-climactic.

On the other hand since it seems almost certain that there will eventually be two-way travel between Primal Earth and Praetoria I'm thinking there's going to be a more formal portal between the two. Maybe the no-frills drop off in Talos is just a "placeholder" for the way people are going to be moving between the two worlds for "real" later on.

So to be clear you're saying you did not have the untimed Dreck mission before Going Rogue but now you do? That's pretty messed up right there - that would probably make you one of the only people left to have access to that mission.

I never doubted that the mission was probably still in the game regardless. The Devs apparently never really fully delete anything from the code even if they change an older version of something into something else. Case in point there were SGs out there who still had Items of Power in their bases for literally years after the Devs supposedly "removed" them from the game.
  18. To the OP... Welcome back to CoH.
As an FYI this game has had an average uptime of well over 97-98% of the time throughout its 6+ year history.
    Quite remarkable actually.

Whenever someone rants about downtime here I can't help but smirk a little. Sure it's going to inconvenience somebody somewhere sooner or later, but to whine about this game's downtime openly on the forum is fairly unreasonable all things considered. *shrugs*

Well historically the Devs like to introduce new things on Tuesdays. Since August 31st is a Tuesday and still technically in August I figure they'll wait to announce anything all the way until then.
  20. This kind of thing happens all the time. It's fascinating to look back and play the "what if" game with actors and roles. For instance Kurt Russell, Christopher Walken and Nick Nolte all apparently tried out for the role of Han Solo in the Star Wars movies.

Even in your list you'll note that Denise Crosby was trying out for the role of Troi...

While 100 times is a bit much that badge is actually farmable by even one person, assuming that person was so inclined to waste 100 solid hours doing it. Despite what the badge says it's keyed to trial attempts, not successes.

From what I understand the number needed for this badge was originally more like 25 successful completions at one point, but the Devs couldn't get the badge counting to trigger reliably upon successful trial completion.

Apparently the switch to 100 attempts was a compromise for making the badge technically easier to earn because now all you need to do to get credit for it is to be in SG mode at the "end" of the trial regardless if the trial ends successfully or if you run out of time after a full hour.

    Yet, anyway.

When a bunch of users can easily generate recordings documenting a bug and a Dev responds with something like "they couldn't replicate it" that disconnect usually means something more along the lines of Castle telling us, "That bug is going to be relatively hard to solve and instead of getting the players' hopes up that we're going to be able to fix this quickly I'd rather be non-committal about it."

Trust me - as software engineer with nearly 20 years of professional experience I've heard just about every "the dog ate my homework" type of excuse when it comes to software issues. Reading between the lines of "Dev-speak" becomes pretty easy to do...

It's not that I'm trying to take anything away from the fine work people like Castle do.
It's just that based on that response it's likely we won't see a fix for this issue instantaneously.

Unfortnately? That's probably the franchise's most appealing quality as far it eventually getting made into a series of Hollywood movies. At least Hollywood wouldn't have hamfistedly add that to the stories in order to make them more "sexy" or whatever for the masses because it's already in there.
