Quote:Clearly you hate the things that the game currently "forces" you to do to get these costume items. You mean forcing people to change alignment wether they want to or not, and do all of pretty much the most boring TFs in the game (bar SSTFs) to get one costume piece?
Oh, and the accolade if they don't have it.
And so help me should anyone go "No ones forcing you blah blah blah-" That is the ONLY way to get epaulets without spikes on. If that is what is required for a concept, that is the ONLY way.
Same as the Redcap daggers. Kill 333 of the little b*ggers? Easy on blueside. Redside? You're stuffed unless someone has the event missions on a loop.
That's fine - you're free to have your own opinion on that.
But all I see with the suggestion to make these things available via A-merits it yet ANOTHER restriction on them: You have to be a certain alignment to have A-merits to begin with. As the classic line goes: "Two wrongs don't make a right."
If the Devs ever provide any other way to get these things they should be via a way that is open to everyone regardless of AT or alignment (such as regular Merits or INF). -
I always find it funny that people get "frustrated" when this game goes down for either patches and/or regular maintenance. I imagine if the overall uptime of this game since April, 28 2004 was charted out it'd be in the 99+ percent range and yet that's STILL not good enough for some.

Ironically I suspect there would be fewer people upset about these sparse downtimes if the percentage was more like 50/50. If we had frequent downtimes then at least people would actually be used to it. Basically this game is a victim of its own success in this regard. -
It would likely be far more trouble limiting Primal characters to some kind of restricted "flashback-only" access to Praetoria than it would be to just allow our old characters full access to the "real" Preatoria everyone else runs around in.
I also suspect the Ouroboros system will be expanded to include Praetorian arcs in some form or fashion. Now that original bluesiders have access to redside Ouroboros and vice-versa it would be strange not to allow any character to ultimately experience Ouro arcs of all three types (red, blue or 'yellow'). -
Somehow I suspect BAB has put even more thought into this... which likely led him to make the reasonable decision that doing an underwater zone is ultimately not worth the obvious hassle and controversy it's generating here.

Quote:Yes things like the witch hat and the plain epaulets were technically restricted to certain ATs (hero ATs specifically) but now I18/GR has removed that restriction by allowing villains to crossover and earn those items as well. There have been a few, like the witch hat and the plain epaulets. Not that I support the idea.
Though, I'd totally be on board with Techbot's idea since it would mean I would never have to deal with Vanguard Merits ever again.
I'm not strictly against the idea of making costume items that require you to earn certain badges be made available via other methods (INF, recipes, etc.) but I'm not sure I'd make those alternate methods themselves restricted to having to be a certain alignment to buy them. If they ever offered things that strictly required A-merits to buy then what happens to those items if you get them THEN switch alignments? Would you lose them because you needed A-merits to have them in the first place?
Ultimately I think it's far better to minimize the "must use A-merits as the main/only way to get a costume item" concept as much as possible. -
I agree the whole "5/day and need 10 to switch" mechanic is a bit arbitrary. But I don't think there'd be any combination of those things that wouldn't ultimately feel a bit artificial.
Maybe they could have done it this way to provide a bit of "realistic randomness" to it: Keep the 5/day limit but change the hardwired "need 10 to get a morality mission" requirement into a variable chance that improves after each Tip mission you do. What I mean by this is that after you do one normal Tip mission you might get a morality Tip on the very next drop but it'd be like a 1:1000 chance. After a 2nd normal Tip mission you might get a morality Tip for the 3rd drop but it'd be like a 1:500 chance and so on. By the time you've (unluckily) had to do 10 normal Tip missions your chance to get a morality Tip for the 11th drop would default to 100%.
This might be more trouble than it's worth but would reflect a better "real world" situation of never knowing where Tips might lead you. -
Frankly it'd be much easier for the Devs to make a zero-G space station and/or low-G Moon zone than it would be for an underwater zone. Things like worrying about "automatic breathing gear" or explaining how powers could work in an air-filled station environment would be much easier than dealing with how things would work underwater.
Thought I'd lob that tangential hand grenade into this discussion just to highlight how problematic being underwater would be.
-
Weird that they would bother to spend any time to change how that worked. I would've figured that since they more or less gave up on the water "experiment" that they'd just leave what they did with that little pool alone as a footnote of sorts. Maybe the changes they made for Ultra mode affected how that unique bit of code worked. *shrugs*

Quote:One time (and one time only) I had a situation where I had just completed 5 alignment missions for the day which filled a character's alignment progress bar to 10 completed missions. I assumed I was going to have to wait until the next day before I got the morality Tip mission because my 5 fame slots were filled. Turned out I played a little more with the character and suddenly got the morality Tip mission drop even though I had the 5 fame points racked up.I believe that there are two limitations on Tip storage:
1) You cannot have more than three unrun Tips at any given time.
2) You cannot gain more Tips than the number of unfilled slots you have left.
Thus, increasing the number of stored Tips from 3 to 5 would not enable you to run a new Tip the next day without farming 20+ foes. The only way to store a Tip is to only run 4 for that day, and leave the remaining tip you have left for your next session. Or, run someone else's Tip.
If anyone has ever had a Tip mission drop after they've filled their 5 slots for the day, I'd like to hear about that. I'm not 100% sure, and would like to see evidence otherwise. However, in my experience I have only had Tips left over while I was teaming.
Ironically I didn't bother to see if I could run it instantly (effectively running a 6th Tip for the day?) because I wanted to stay that current alignment long enough to earn the badge for staying a given alignment for a solid 7 days first. I don't know if that was a fluke or if it was working as intended because it was the morality Tip mission and not just a "standard" Tip mission. Either way the game did let me earn a total of 6 Tips in one day (even if I didn't try to run them all in that one day). -
As to the point that Stormfront_NA wants a "zone" to act as an agent to either disable or degrade our powers to provide a challenge. Why do we need another new zone to do that? Can't that be accomplished by simply exemplaring down? Can't that be accomplished by going to any of the non level 50 PvP zones/arenas that already exist?
This aspect of the suggestion to have an underwater zone appears to be a solution in search of a problem... -
Do you have the slightest clue as to why things like this don't work now the way the did "back in the day"? Once you realize the Devs did what they did to FIX the game you'll see why they'll never go out of their way to consciously break it again. Think about it a little more and you'll understand why your suggestion will never happen as you've described.

Quote:So just because you, a player, don't like BAB's stance on the whole underwater zone thing you think he ought to be let go from the design team? If having an underwater zone is really -that- important to you there's always that other game ready and waiting for you right now. With regards to BaBs statement, perhaps he does need to be let go.
I don't have a problem with a designer who has a strong opinion about the fate of his game. There are things the Devs of this game have done that I thought were very good and there are other things I think they could have done better. But clearly the future of this game does NOT hinge on whether or not this game ever gets an underwater zone or not.
I strongly suspect that if BAB wanted to have an underwater zone that he and the other Devs could create one and that it'd be done well. Their competency as designers is not really in question here. This basically boils down to an artistic choice that you apparently don't agree with. That's fine, but please don't think there's actually enough desire from the playerbase for the Devs to consider BAB's stance on the underwater thing to be game-threatening.
An underwater zone would be nice to have here, but I think many people could easily live without one. *shrugs* -
I'm sure someone will explain it better than me but it was part of an April Fool's joke a few years ago where the Devs claimed they were going to remove the sound effects from the game in favor of visual comicbook styled text-based popup "sounds" on the screen kind of like the silly ones you saw on the old 60's era Batman TV show. As I recall "FREEM!" was one of the more popular ones the Devs came up with as an example for that.

I know this'll sound a bit morbid but just about the only way this story could have been "better" from the irony point of view was if it had been the original designer of the Segway who had the accident. It's really too bad anyone had to die that way, but for it to be the guy who just happened to be the current head of the company and not the original designer guy sort of dilutes the overall "ironic" quality a bit.
Still this will be one of those stories that'll last forever regardless because of the "it figures" factor. -
Heh, you're right. I never bothered to look too closely at her outfit before but you can definitely make out the outline of where that mesh covers up to her neck and shoulders. It's the same type of "modesty" covering you see used by skaters and ballroom dancers' outfits. Knowing that it makes the censorship of this video by Sesame Street seem all the more silly. Oh well...

Quote:I'm not discounting your valid point. On the other hand I think I19 will give everyone more options to choose from. There has been a mention that more Tip missions are being added to the game. I suspect this'll be a more likely "answer" for you than the Devs changing the limit from 3 to 5 Tips./signed
But, I want it for different reason. I am picky as which tip missions to run, and dismissing right away tips like "Carnie Debutants", "Unstable Trigger", any tip mission that is specific zone bound (like 2 arachnos missions that are only in IP) or Nemesis mission that often sends you to Creys or Bricks. On another hand I like to do both DE missions, "Save Black Panther 952", Polar Shift, etc.
More than 3 will give me more options to choose from. -
Quote:The real "trick" of the Alignment Merit system has nothing to do with saving up 20 or 30 A-merits to buy specific recipes. Sure you could do that if you wanted. But the real key seems to be using the A-merits to roll for rare recipes to craft and sell. You have to pay 20 million INF per merit, though, right? About 20 days of tip farming and 400 milliion INF for one recipe? If so, it really doesn't seem to offer much advantage to the casual player over AE farming to buy recipies to craft and sell, then buying the purples off the market. Just an impression.
For example with one A-merit you can get 5 random rare level 50 recipes. I've done this many times and can always yield (after crafting them) at least 40-50 million INF as a MINIMUM when I sell them on the market. I often net over a 100 million per A-merit roll.
Yes it costs several millions of INF to craft the recipes and it can even cost 20 million INF if you choose to buy your A-merits instead of earn them doing alignment missions. But when I mentioned my net 1.5 billion gain that was -after- all of my crafting costs were factored in and I did all that in just roughly a month of fairly casual effort.
You've got to be willing to look past the costs of doing this and see the longer term goal where you will ultimately make far more INF than you spend.

Quote:Well even the Bible didn't talk about Jesus much between the ages of 12 and 30.Smallville has/had the potential to keep going.
In the movie, it took him 12 years to fully develop his powers. That's 12 years after the age of 18? if I remember correctly.
Maybe Smallville should have taken the hint... j/k

Once again I never denied there were various ways to trick-up a level 50 Praetorian today. But by the same token I don't think the Devs are strictly required to cater to them until there's content ready for them either. Every indication we've gotten is that there will be much more expanded content for Praetoria in I19, even if that just means (as a bare minimum) there will be an easy means for characters to travel back and forth between Primal Earth and Praetoria.
When both CoH and CoV first launched they only allowed characters from level 1-40 to play in them until Issue 1 and Issue 7 respectively added their level 40-50 content. I see nothing wrong with the idea that it's going to take another Issue (in this case Issue 19) before more high end Going Rogue content/support is added to the game.
The way I see it we should be happy that we can even fudge level 50 Praetorians now if you really want to. We should consider it a "sneak peak" to the content that's yet to come.

Eh, it's certainly possible that a game like this could make its own underwater zone and make it 10x better than CO's zone. But I still think it'd be smarter for a new zone in this game to be as "original" as possible. No point in even "hinting" at the idea that we're just playing copy-cat. We already did that once with Ninja Run.

Quote:I know I don't expect everyone to re-read through this thread, especially for anything I wrote in it. But I already mentioned that I've seen several first season episodes of this show and that was enough for me.I guess i look at smallville much like when i used to collect comic books. I would find something about a book I liked, and i would collect it. However over time writers and artists moved on and i would like it less and less, however hold out hope and continue to leave it on my saver.
But also i have always found it hypocritical to hate on something with no ammunition as to why i hate on it other then what others say. For instance i HATE Twilight. I have seen the movies though, and feel by doing so atleast i can give legit comments to why i hate it based on my actual opinion and not just say "from what i have heard...." I dont HATE smallville, i just wish it was about 4 times better then it is. And frankly im ready for the series to end.
Admittedly my "ammunition" is pretty old but it's not non-existent. If this show somehow managed to get better between now and then then all I can say is that it's a shame it didn't start out worthwhile to begin with. -
At this point there's yet another reason why this game getting its own underwater zone would be unlikely.
I can describe that reason with one word: Lemuria.
If you don't know what I'm talking about go ahead and google it with the following phrase: "Lemuria Champions Online".
Once you do you'll realize it'll just look like this game is trying to play "catch-up" to an inferior game.

Quote:I agree people who "hate" on a show they're still watching is pretty hypocritical and weird.I still find those hating on the show to be more pointless than those who defend it...because if you hate it...why are you watching it?
I keep myself morally pure by hating(?) on this show -without- watching it.
As I implied before I haven't seen 5 solid minutes of Smallville in like 9+ years.
-
Yeah you're probably right. The main point I was trying to make is that even though there are people out there who are willing to "bend" the limits of this game doesn't mean the game has to cater to those people. Until the game is "designed" for post level 20 characters in Praetoria there's no pressing need to give characters like that all the bells and whistles.
