Quote:Based on what's been said in this thread so far it seems like you could actually take the book, the Swedish film and the American film together as three versions of a single Rashomon styled story. Each version highlights different elements of the core story and collectively makes them all stronger for it.Like with most adaptations my preference lies with the book (the original source material) as I think it has many more layers of flavor and nuance that you can't get from shortform media. While the overall story isn't really about what kind of "relationship" Abby has with the Father, it gives a depth and sadness to the character and the book that goes beyond a little boy and girl becoming friends against great odds. Some people prefer a distilled story, some like the full course dinner. Me, I like my books wordy with a gross amount of details. A comparison of the movies as I said before: fraternal twins or two sides of the same coin...if you like one you'll like the other yadda yadda. BUT I would encourage anyone to partake of any combination of these properties, they are all quite good and can be enjoyed alone, as a duo or even a full set.
*** spoiler alert ***
I personally enjoyed the exploration of the relationship between the vampire and her apparently older original companion. I haven't read the book yet to know if it clearly defined how old Abby/Eli was but even from the American film it was made pretty clear that she was at least 50+ years old (perhaps even much older).
I know this relationship has been described as "pedophilic" because that's the first thing people think of when they see a hinted-at sexual relationship between someone who looks like an older man and a "person" who looks like a 12 year old girl. But the vampire factor makes this story interesting because you have to force yourself to realize that the "little girl" in this relationship is quite likely far older (mentally if not physically) than the supposedly old man is. Can you really label something like this pedophilic when both parties in the relationship are at least many, many decades old? As a twist you then have to realize that the relationship between Abby and Owen is actually the more aptly named pedophilic relationship in this story because even though they both 'look' to be about 12 years old Abby is of course much, much older than Owen is.

Quote:Well like I said I'll wait until someone more "adventurous" than me breaks the laws of physics and invents the warp drive or something equivalently fantastic that'll make travelling to the stars a realistic possibility. I suppose I'm personally satisfied being a "Luddite" about it until that scientific impossibility happens mostly because it's pretty clear it's not going to happen in my lifetime, if ever. We can't even generate the collective will as a species to work together to go back to the Moon at this point - what makes anyone seriously think we're going to get our act together enough to do anything better? *shrugs*The world became what it is because of adventurous spirit, and those that didn't let limitations that life set before them keep them from doing anything, but instead invented ways out of that darkness...like lightbulbs and toaster ovens and the little thing on my desk shelf that I'm still not sure what it does yet.
...let's do something, instead of complaining about how much we suck.
I'll suppose I'll leave it to the far future generations to create the Star Empires needed to fight the Aliens, Predators, Klingons, Sith Lords, Daleks, Cylons, Tribbles and/or whatever else is out there... -
People have asked to be able to name non-mastermind pets for a long time and I understand why it might be fun to be able to do that if you want. Fortunately, at least for me, that has never been a high priority concern for me.
For example I tend to RP my main Fire Controller having an elitist, condescending outlook to her Imps. To her they are semi-mindless cannon fodder that are summoned at random only to hurt her enemies and sacrifice themselves to spare her any harm. I doubt she'd ever lower herself enough to grant any of them a unique name. Obviously that's just a "RP explanation" to help me avoid worrying about naming them, but it works for me until something changes.

Quote:If you're sick of the negativity then nothing's really stopping YOU from inventing warp drive for us.I'm also getting sick of the "it's too dangerous, send robots" and "that planet is too far away, we'll never ever see it" crap as well. While those things may be true, barring the invention of time travel or advances in cryogenics, that kind of thinking isn't going to get us anywhere. Neither will the "we suck" thoughts.
Since you're apparently so "optimistic" about it why don't you let us know when you've got that figured out...
And don't confuse the "we suck" as a species thoughts with anything other than realistic self-assessment based on historical truths. Pessimistic downer thoughts aren't what's going to keep us from the stars anytime soon, the laws of physics will do that well enough on their own.
Sure I'd like to live in a Star Trek future too.
The diference is that I'm not "assuming" it's going to happen that way for us. -

Based on my limited experience with converting A-merits into recipe rolls to sell I'd say that any estimate that pegs the "typical value" of an A-merit between 50 to 100 million INF would be acceptably realistic.
Obviously there's nothing out there to guarantee that value one way or the other. But let's just say for the time being they are worth "far more" than 5 million INF and "far less" than 500 million INF. Give or take a few million...

Quote:IIRC there's like one or two others that aren't obvious on the Vidiotmaps. I think one of them was in St. Martial but my memory's a bit fuzzy on that. Basically between the Vidiotmaps and the info available at Paragonwiki all of them are covered. It's on the roof of the University above the front door. The marker for the plaque at the front door is slightly blocking it on the "Interactive" view. If you look closely at it, you will see it. It's clearly visible on the "Viewable (Print Out)" version though.

I have a bunch of alts I -could- respec to take advantage of this change to Fitness, but honestly there's only like 3 or 4 I'll probably ever bother with in a serious way. It's cool the Devs are making this change - fortunately for my sanity I don't really feel obligated to "min/max" every character I have for it. YMMV.
-
I didn't quite say it would've been a "bad thing" but it would have been a distraction for a while.Quote:Hey, imagine the tribute scene they could have done on the holodeck.
For instance it took me a couple of seasons of Enterprise to finally get over Captain Quantum Leap.
At least they could have played "superheroes" on the holodeck instead of Paris' Flash Gordon tribute.
When you think about it Jeri Ryan's Seven of Nine was actually pretty close to a sci-fi version of Wonder Woman already. She was tough, no-nonsense, smart, statuesque and arguably "amazon-like" in her mannerisms, outlook and determination.Quote:Lynda Carter and Jeri Ryan in tight Star Trek outfits?
That would have been awesome.
While Lynda Carter on a Star Trek show would have been interesting I think we got a Wonder Woman from Ryan without even realizing it.

Quote:These kinds of "surprising screen tests" happen all the time in Hollywood.Oh and a little known fact Lynda Carter Auditioned for the role of Captain Kathryn Janeway on "Star Trek: Voyager" (1995).
/Emote jumps up and down in consternation doing my best Roscoe Pecole Train impression
Coulda been The Best Star Trek Series EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've heard about this one several times over the years.
While Lynda Carter is a decent enough actress and probably could have handled being in a Star Trek series I almost think the Wonder Woman thing typecasted her too much for any other established franchise like that. If she had been the captain on Voyager I would have kept expecting her to solve all their problems by spinning into her Wonder Woman outfit and deflecting phaser blasts with her bracelets.

Quote:They've shown a "willingness" to give us these things only after many, many NERFS over the years allowed for a game that had some "wiggle room" to inch back up towards Incarnates. Don't confuse the inclusion of the Incarnate system as a hint from the Devs that they now love tankmagery.Unlike most other MMOs, in this one, Tankmages are actually completely and utterly theme appropriate, so why not actually let the players work to it and have it?
They've already shown a willingness for this with IOs and the expanded difficulty options, so I really don't see why they have to stop now.
-
Quote:Sadly I'm pretty sure the Devs can't count on players to be "self-regulating" about these kinds of things. If players are allowed to break a game (any game) by exploiting the limits of what's allowed they'll do it.Let's discuss worse case scenarios. So we get Tankmages...at 50...after earning a bunch of slots.
-We'll have people soloing at +4x8.
We already have that with some ATs. The game hasn't exploded.
-People start soloing Monsters and GMs.
The rewards for GMs and Monsters are so meager it's not really worth doing more than once for bragging rights.
-People start soloing the existing level 50 TFs.
Again, see above. There are already better ways to farm.
-The current level 50 content will be trivialized.
It's already trivial for some. As it should be, this is a game not a job. If you want challenge from the content we have now, don't be an Incarnate, just like now if you find the game too easy, don't IO out and min/max.
We have seen nearly countless nerfs over the years where the Devs of this game have LOWERED our capabilities just enough to let people "comfortably fit" into the level 50 power levels you listed off.
I simply have a reasonable concern that the Incarnate system could possibly serve to re-upset that balance established over the years. I'd hate to think a month after Incarnates go live we're going to have to be hit by yet another round of nerfs to make it all work again. -
Quote:I suppose the definition of what makes a foreign film "obscure" is, like most things, relative. So apparently there are two different versions of LtROI? A theatrical release that's "teh awsumest horror movie EVAR" and a DVD where the subtitles were poorly translated? I must have rented the latter, as my friend and I ended up shutting the thing off after 20 minutes.
Is Let the Right One In really that obscure? The only reason I even bothered looking into it were numerous reviews that called it the best horror movie in the last 10 years. Sorta like... whatwasthatotheroverratedmoviecalled... The Host getting ranked so high on sci-fi lists. Hell, I (regretfully) bought The Host at Wal-Mart after all the hype.
For me Let the Right One In was "obscure" enough because A) I had never heard of it until Let Me In and B) any movie that only manages $7.2 million in worldwide box office can't be something that would be considered in the "common public knowledge". I'd be willing to bet if (especially before Let Me In was made) you went and asked 20 average Americans about Let the Right One In most of them would tell you they never heard of it. Take that for what you will.
Having seen Let Me In I do now want to see Let the Right One In just to understand and be knowledgeable of the differences. I suspect what I'll find is that each of them did some things better and some things worse respectively. Obviously it's also possible I'll agree with you and realize the American remake is vastly superior. Who knows until I've seen them both I guess.
What I do know is that IMDB has Let the Right One In rated on their top #250 list so all I can say is that I'm willing to give it the benefit of the doubt at this point. -
I can almost understand why the Devs never gave us a "rename SG" feature before they gave us the red-star Super Leader rank because there was no single person "in charge" so to speak. Without a single top leader in charge there could be bickering about who had the overall authority to rename a SG.
But now that SGs are forced to have one single person be the top leader it should be pretty straightforward to allow the Super Leaders the ability to rename a SG. In fact I actually kind of assumed one of the main reasons the Devs gave us the Super Leader rank in the first place was to make things like SG renames possible. Why it hasn't happened yet almost seems weird to me. *shrugs* -
The Devs are juggling a fundamental concept that has to be balanced out in all MMOs: How do they give players more power without pushing things over the edge allowing players to have god-like Tankmages? Honestly I'm not really sure how they are going to keep things from going too far with this Incarnate system.

I mean I already have several fully Purple-IO'd characters who are practically god-like right now. Just how much more all-powerful will the Devs let me make those kinds of characters? I'm not really saying I -don't- want the Incarnate system to happen. I'm just going to be very interested whether the Devs will be able to make it a significant system without unbalancing the game with it. -
Quote:I completely agree. Ultimately I was stressing the key point that some people are mistakenly assuming that "random" in this game must mean that a set of things are EQUALLY likely to happen. They are not only allowed to do that by virtue of being the devs; they can do it by virtue of that being the actual definition of random. There is nothing even slightly misleading about it.
There is an obvious difference (at least to me) between something that is UNIFORMLY random and something that NON-UNIFORMLY random (a.k.a. weighted). There is no rule that says drops like Purple drops MUST be uniformly random in this or any other game. To the people complaining that's somehow "unfair" or "misleading" I'd once again point out that the Devs, being the Devs, can basically set it up any way they want.

Quote:I completed the new "An Instant Army" arc a few days after I18/GR went live but the "gold star" for it did not trigger.3) I'm betting it didn't register as complete in Ouroboros because of the change and the fact that the developers have been monkeying with the npcs on those arcs to get them to award badge credit correctly, perhaps resetting the "completed" flag in the process.
I reported it as a bug and have been patiently waiting to see if any of the recent patches have fixed it.
It'd be great if anyone could report whether the gold star for this arc is now working or not.

Paragonwiki is always a good place to start for any game information.
Vidiotmaps is a good place to find maps with all the explore badge locations.
Enjoy.

You have to figure that since the "blueside" was the core of the original game that it'll likely always be the most populated of the three "sides" on any given server. Now if future Issues expand Praetoria out to levels 1-50 then it'll be more accurate (and fair) to compare it to the other two areas.
Beyond all that I'm not really sure it matters all that much in the general scheme of things.

Quote:Just remember that every MMO has its own slang that everybody has to learn. It's just like every job having its own terms and shorthand for things. Some of it here is common to most MMOs, but some is probably unique to this game. Everybody has to learn it whether English is your first language or not.I am pretty new at this MMO Stuff but I noticed that there seems to be a particular slang (that being not a native English Speaker to boot) I do not really understand.
I think Anchor is serving as a Teleport Beacon ?
TP is teleport.
But beyond that I am bewildered and clueless.
Can some of the old Hands please clue me ( and the other noobs ) in ?
Good luck to you and have fun.

Quote:This Paragowiki link might be more directly helpful to you.I still do not see the listings of these missions on that page, other than to note at the bottom what are badge missions for villians. (Specifically not up above in the missions available by level/contact)
That link lists the mission links you need.
Good luck.

Quote:Sadly that doesn't really surprise me. Even I had to read a review or two and watch a few previews to figure out enough about this movie to decide I wanted to see it. I'm guessing most people are giving it a few seconds of thought and giving up on it because it's not the kind of film that makes itself instantly recognizable to the masses. It came in 8th and made a mere $5.1 million so if you want to see it, move quick to do so, or it's a rental.

Then again when you check IMDB the original movie (Let the Right One In) apparently only made a total of $7.2 million worldwide so the remake making $5.1 million on its opening weekend is, relatively speaking, not that bad. You figure it'll probably make another $5-10 million in the following weeks in the theater and maybe like another $5-10 million in total DVD sales.
It's too bad a movie like this won't do better at the box office, but it's done better than the original alone would have. -
Quote:It's been a long time for me but I remember being the "poorest" right around level 25 on my first character. It seems to be the natural time to be poor. But as I recall as you get up into the mid 30s and beyond you start getting a lot more INF per unit time. It's just a matter of sticking it out. Also you have the market to take advantage of - the market didn't even exist when I was first coming up.I just started Coh 2 days ago. Im playing a SS/WP brute and currently at lvl 25.
All my enhancements are expired or almost going to expire and hardly have any money.
What is the best way to level up ? should i do missions or just grind on mobs in the city ? How can i improve my enhancements, I hardly get any money from the missions
Good luck to you.

Quote:Since the aura leak was not supposed to happen at all it is kind of hard to be upset it's not perfect for everyone yet.Hmmm... true enough, but still.. I'd rather have missed Snow

Time to wait a wee bit then, and one is still better than none right?
But yeah the Firefly aura is really pretty cool and I do find myself wishing it had leaked towards being available for females now.

Quote:It's funny how that works:I know of people whom after watching the crappy 'Clash of the Titans' remake specifically went out, rented, watched and then bought on Blu-Ray the original 1982 masterpiece in preference.
Its much better.
If even a crappy remake can HELP an original imagine what a good remake of an obscure foreign film can do.
