Quote:I never assumed a person would automatically lean towards "full evil" with superpowers just as I never assumed people would automatically lean towards "full good". Human choice would always be involved to some degree.Still, I don't think full evil is any more natural than full good. Human beings ARE pack animals, so the well-being of the "pack" IS a natural concern. Extreme selflessness and extreme selfishness both fall outside of instinctual behavior.
I just happen to accept that things which are labeled as being natural or instinctual are not also automatically moral. There are areas those things can overlap, but they are not equivalents. Morality is a intellectual construct not a universal constant. -
You are confusing what's natural with human morality. You may think acting morally is the "proper" way human beings should act and that's fine. But there's really absolutely nothing NATURAL about it.

Quote:People with superpowers, almost by definition, would redefine what's "moral" to suit their own purposes. Choices that we call 'good' and 'evil' lose any sense of collective certainty when superpowers would basically allow you to do anything you DECIDED was good for you or anyone else. The only moral option with superpowers is to use them to help others

Helping others, as you put it, would become merely something you'd CHOOSE to do, not something you HAD to do.

Quote:Actually ego-centric self-preservation is the "natural" thing to do. Things like morality and doing the "right thing" like you are talking about are human rationalizations for an orderly society.Protecting innocent people from harm doesn't need rationalizing because it's a natural thing to do - only villains need to rationalize their actions, because they're acting un-naturally

In a world where no one has super powers we have to collectively encourage people to act as you suggest so that we all get along. In a world where someone "tips the scales" by getting super powers all bets are basically off. The person with powers no longer has any moral imperative to follow the rules unless, for some "unnatural" reason, they still want to. -
I happen to think the original level of Kheldian vulnerability to voids/quants was acceptable and valid. I managed to level up a couple of Khelds back then without extreme difficulty. It was refreshingly cool to actually have to be worried about something like a "deadly sworn enemy" that could zap you if your tactics didn't account for them. It kept me from sleep-walking through many missions because I actually had to pay attention to what I was doing.

Obviously most people didn't agree with my opinion on that because the Devs eventually caved in to all the whining about it.
They watered down the severity of that threat to its currently semi-trivial level.
If my thoughts on the matter puts me on some kind of "List" then so be it. *shrugs* -
Quote:Bingo! With Kryptonian level powers it'd be pretty easy to rationalize your actions and judge anyone around you to suit whatever your agenda happened to be.

Quote:Yeah that was Data's "choice". But nothing would have really stopped him (as an immortal android) from switching bodies after his current batch of human buddies passed away.I seem to remember an episode that may have been set somewhat in the future, where someone commented on Data looking older and he said he was changing his appearance to match his human colleagues.

I think most people are missing the "bigger picture" about whether you end up being a super hero or super villain. You don't just start out with being all evil and selfish - that's the sloppy way to do it.
What you do first is be all nice and helpful. You become so well loved and cherished by the unwashed masses that they'll gladly accept your slow but eventual total domination and control over everything. Why not be the super mastermind ruler of the world AND have the world love you for doing it? *smiles deviously* -
Quote:Once again I have no problem with Inherent Fitness RP-wise or any other way. But clearly you got hung up on the use of Superman as an example of what I what trying to explain in terms of Disads. Obviously Superman is a very extreme example as far as superhero power goes.Hero's in CoH already have a massive disadvantage/weakness.
GAME BALANCE.
It is the universal kryptonite of each and every PC in the game.
In short, if you're serious about RP, you should have exactly ZERO gripes about inherent Fitness. Because you should already have explanations in place for the effects it will give to your PCs.
RP is about telling yourself and others a story. BE MORE CREATIVE.
'nuff said.
I never meant to suggest CoH was not already a balanced game in general. What I was suggesting was a system of optional disadvantages that we could apply to our characters for not only RP purposes but as a means to provide a further challenge for those who find the game to be relatively simplistic. Again I'll point to what the Devs have already provided in the way of mission difficulty settings. All I'm suggesting is having "more" of that.
When the Devs first introduced Kheldians and their vulnerability to things like voids/quants this was exactly the type of thing I was looking for. But the reason everybody whined and moaned about it was that there was no OPTION when it came to this weakness - if you wanted to play a Kheld you HAD to accept that disadvantage. That's why the Devs eventually watered down the whole idea and made their "weakness" fairly insignificant.
If the Devs gave us options like allowing our characters to be vulnerable to selectable enemy types or damage types at character creation it would go far to allow us to make sure none of us end up with god-like Supermen to begin with. We could help the Devs balance the game for them with our OWN choices. -
Quote:I'm the type of player who:I suspect that the screaming about common salvage prices is that vendors only pay 250 for it, so it's only "worth" 250. If anyone charges more than 250 then they are stealing.
If people charge too much for common salvage you don't have to buy it. It's trivial to get in large quantities in just a few minutes of playing time, if you really object to paying an extra 10,000 to get a piece of junk that's only "worth" 250.
1) has multiple fully purpled IO builds on all the alts I care about for that.
2) has always "dumped" any excess common salvage I had on the markets for 1 INF and NEVER vendored any of it.
3) currently has billions of unused INF scattered around on various characters.
Basically what I'm saying is that I (for one) couldn't care less that the vendors pay 250 INF for salvage. It has never bothered me once that I have ever "lost" INF dumping stuff on the market as opposed to selling to the vendors and it has never bothered me once that I've ever had to pay 10,000+ INF for "junk" crafting supplies that are technically only worth 250 INF. People who actually worry about "losing" or "making" money with vending common salvage are micro-managing things that are simply not that important in the greater scheme of things. *shrugs* -
I'm not AGAINST Inherent Fitness and I'm not really FOR a way to "turn off" Inherent Fitness for RP purposes.
But I do find it sad that there's such a basic hatred here towards the concept of in-game "disadvantages/weaknesses" especially when you consider it's a cornerstone of the comic book genre. Anyone heard of what Kryptonite does to Superman?
Obviously I would never suggest forcing people to have built-in weaknesses if you didn't want them. But it's unfortunate that people are so vocally whiny about being against anything even remotely like it because I feel it's a huge part of the comic book experience that's being overlooked by the Devs of this game. When I was big into playing the Champions table-top RPG being able to work interesting disadvantages/weaknesses into your character concepts was one of the coolest things about that game and kept it from devolving into pointless silly Tankmagery. With something to actually have to WORRY about it made playing that game much more challenging and fun.
I will always be for OPTIONAL ways to introduce a workable Disadvantage concept to this game. The Devs provided us limited ways to do that when they gave us optional difficulty settings for missions and Task/Strike Forces but there's so much more that could be added. Basically I think being able to run around like "Superman without the threat of Kryptonite" has made this game ultimately too simple and less entertaining than it could have been. -
Quote:Having a reasonable "TV trick" to explain why a different actor would play the same character has worked for Doctor Who for decades. Even Star Trek's Trill had a built-in way to deal with that if necessary.I can understand why they killed off Data and put his memories in a new body. Data is supposed to be immortal or at least not age and it has been about 20 years since TNG aired. Using a different actor to play Data would have been the best possible solution.
As far as an immortal android goes it seems reasonable that every so often they would want to try out a different "appearance" with a new body. To them having an entirely new body might be as trivial as a human today deciding to get a tattoo or new hair style.

Quote:I suppose I'm just hoping that "humans uploaded to machines" will win out over the "sentient machines that load themselves into terminator robots".again, waiting for the tech singularity, when we can shake off this fleshy body and go completely energy, that way we can traverse great distances, regardless of the effects of time.
Trying to get this fleshy mass all that way is a waste, really.

Sadly I'm old enough to remember a time when people thought the things that happened in 2001: A Space Odyssey might realistically be possible by 2001.

We might eventually get there anyway, but at this point I think it's going to be more important to see how we survive the Technological Singularity (a.k.a. real life HAL 9000s) than worry about humans creating moon bases or sending manned ships to Jupiter.
And as far as people living longer sure it's always possible someone might come up with a medical way to extend our lifetimes soon enough. But more than likely that way will be too expensive and too difficult to allow EVERYONE to take advantage of it, at least at first. Imagine the chaos that'll happen if only -some- of us were allowed to be effectively immortal and not -all- of us. It'll make our upcoming wars for oil and water look like pillow fights... -

Quote:[STANDARD CODE RANT] You may not know it, but an int's max value is a little over 2.1 billion. Due to the cap being 2 billion it seems safe to assume they are using an int. Now, in order to increase it everything dealing with inf in any part of the game would need to be reprogrammed.Quote:And no. Aside from the *technical* reasons for the INF cap being where it is, so few players hit it there's no real reason to.Three obviously good reasons why there's no justifiable reason to raise the INF limit.Quote:Since they put in a sweet email system this seems redundant so why bother.
Four reasons if you count the theory that general price inflation would result if the limit was increased.
Despite ALL these reasons there will still be people who routinuely suggest this idea. Oh well...

Quote:Thanks once again for updating your maps. Like I implied you might very well have updated them YEARS ago for all I know because it's been that long since I used them and noticed a few missing markers at that point.Ever since the redesign of the site, the screenshots have been there.
We only recently added the pictures of the Plaques. But the Exploration images have always been there even before the site's redesign.
The only badges missing images are badges like Multidimensional and Shrouded, badges that really have no exploration marker. Kind of hard to put a picture to something that doesn't exsist
Why are you -always- so defensive about these things? After all I gave your site the initial plug in this thread to begin with and I didn't mention any problems with them first.

For what it's worth I've noticed a lot less lag on recent ITFs than I recall when it was first introduced. I've been running this game on a PC that hasn't changed in a couple of years so the only thing that could have really changed was improvements in the game software.
Obviously the Devs could always continue to improve the lag situations no matter what causes them. But at least as far as the ITF goes for me they have made that one canyon mission much more "non-annoying" than it used to be. *shrugs* -
Quote:Not sure I'd call the story this thread is about a "vamp soap" but I agree at least it's not another "LET ME PLAY NAO!" cry-fest.LoL, looking at the thread title, I came in here expecting to see people whining about the servers still being down nearly two hours past the estimated time. Instead I find a discussion about vamp soaps. I guess it's refreshing in a sense. At least we have something else to talk about.

If anything around here is a non-stop whiny "soap" it's the people who spew up those kinds of silly threads.

Quote:Thanks for the book info. I do intend to read it but I just haven't gotten around to it yet.Book spoilers and delicate content.................................
Eli in the book is several hundred years old. They were taken into a castle as a child and made a eunuch and was abused by the strange lord of the castle and turned to be a child forever. The fact all of this was done pre puberty explains his androgynous appearance.
Hakan (in the book) is a former teacher who was fired because it was revealed he was a pedophile. Eli used Hakan to procure blood from people as to not create more vampires and paid him with money even though he said he would do it for free. He makes several requests for physical contact but it is never reciprocated from Eli. And even after Eli finally gives in, events get in the way of it ever happening.
And even though technically Eli isn't a child, Eli looks like one and is therefore attractive to certain predator types and has in the past used it as a method of getting blood.
So Hakan was a pedophile with other kids and Eli is centuries old and used the lure of pedophilia while hunting as a vampire. Both those bits of info don't really shatter my background "expectations" of those characters. Ultimately the collective story here still makes you question which relationships between the three main characters could really be considered strictly pedophilic or not. The lines get blurred and I think that's part of what makes this story interesting. -
Quote:Thanks for updating them then.Well we do show screenshots of all the badges, if you can't find the badges with a picture, then I don't know what else to tell ya

There was a time (admittedly long ago) where a few of them were missing from those maps.
I don't know what else to tell ya...

Because there was no mention of any new costume items in the I19 announcements my suspicions that there will only be a "costume booster pack" in the relative near future has increased. Take that reasoning for what you will...
