Quote:There's been a more general suggestion floating around that would actually apply to your specific desire to turn off Patrol XP. The suggestion is to have a percentage slider for XP earning instead of just a binary "on/off" option for it. This would allow people to earn any percentage of XP between 100% (normal amount) down to 0%. With this slider you could adjust it so that you could effectively cancel out the bonus effect of Patrol XP.Okay, okay, I get that there are workarounds. I knew that before I posted. What I'm saying is that Patrol XP should have been made optional in the first place so that we wouldn't have to use workarounds.
Unfortunately it's not likely we'll ever get such a XP slider so barring that you have the workarounds mentioned here. -
The only real "problem" was that the Devs let us get away with playing with an unchecked system from the beginning. Once again if it had been in place since Day One nobody would now know the difference.

Quote:Yes I agree it's unfortunate they didn't apply the ED concept to the game from Day One. It should have been something they should have accounted for from the very beginning. Because of that lack of vision we went through a period of great whining and chaos that we could have otherwise avoided. It is still worth it to be upset because we were punished, severely, for their game design mistakes. And it was their mistakes. It boggles the mind that the Devs did not expect that players would try to squeeze out every ounce of maximum performance they can for their characters or play them contrary to the Devs' envisioning.
We paid for a broken game while the Devs got their act together. That wasn't exactly fun. -
-
Sorry to hear that. ED actually barely affected me because ironically enough I slotted most of my characters with a "diversified" mindset to begin with. I didn't even really have to respec for it to any great degree. *shrugs*

Quote:ED paved the way to allow for the degree of power we now enjoy with IOs and soon the Incarnate system. While I can agree that the steps along the road between when ED hit and where we are now took many years and were annoying to various degrees, I'm firmly convinced we now have a better game for it. As always YMMV.No, I'm upset about ED, because it's a stupid system. I don't mind being capped at around 100% enhancement from enhancers. I hate the way ED does it. I hate that ED is so obtuse. I hate that ED enforces Statesman's stupid punishment of min-maxers.
ED was about the worst way to fix a non-problem. Inventions only cover up the stupid.
Pre-ED we did not operate in an "unchecked" system. There was a check: 200% enhancement to a Pool A attribute. ED added a secondary check on top of the original check of six slots. It hurt Blasters in ways that later had to be corrected via the Defiance changes. It all but crippled defense sets who didn't have the benefit of the critter accuracy changes then.
We all forget now, but the game sucked pretty bad in the early post-ED days. It took a number of buffs to various ATs to get us near to a good place again. ED was put in because the devs wanted to avoid having to nerf the CoV ATs as mercilessly as they did the CoH ATs. It was an overcorrection on top of the Global Defense changes in Issue 5. Were it not for my long-standing personal rule never to /ragequit, I would have been gone.
ED accomplished nothing other than breaking the game. And it took about three years for the worst of the damage to be corrected. -
Quote:Well I suppose that "gap" between ED and IOs is worth remembering as a period of time that shouldn't have lasted two-odd years. All things considered they probably should have hit us with both things at the same time. Heck in a perfect game we would have had both ED and IOs on Day One.No, I'm still upset about it because they nerfed the **** out of everything in sight then gave us NOTHING in return for the two-odd years it took them to push out the invention system.

But really, while that gap was not ideal it's hardly worth -still- being upset about is it? -
Quote:The only reason anyone is still upset about ED now is because they remember the "good old days" when we were spoiled with a game system that was unchecked and had no room to allow for upward power advancement. If the Devs hadn't collectively nerfed us down with ED then they wouldn't have had any room to allow us to inch back up to those original levels of power with IOs and soon with the Incarnate system.ED isn't necessary period. If you give people [X] number of slots, then you should let them put whatever they want in those slots. If you want "three max" then you don't allow powers to be enhanced beyond three slots.
ED should have existed from Day One so that no one would've known anything different than what we have now. *shrugs* -
I would've started working on I19 about one week earlier so I would've fixed the bug with Kheldians by now and have it released before Thankgiving as intended.

Yep I'd pretty much say "random is random" as well especially since there hasn't been a significant patch to the live build in many weeks. I've only had around 20 purples drop for me since they were first introduced to the game and one of those 20 just happened last night. Maybe I got one of yours.

Quote:Praetorian Tourist was a badge someone came up with and included in the I18 badge listing on Paragonwiki.
My guess is someone "magically" found it and assumed it would become a live badge at some point. -
Quote:Sure there are plenty of shows where a "subject matter expert" would be able to pull it apart by the seams. I'm sure this kind of thing happens all the time when real life doctors watch medical shows for instance. Anyone else who isn't a doctor in real life might not notice the mistakes being made.I can't think of a single drama on TV that holds up to any degree of scrutiny. They all break the rules to one degree or another. Watch a medical show, any medical show, with a doctor or nurse and ask them, "What did they do wrong?" and you'll likely get a response along the lines of, "Good lord, where do I begin? Everything is wrong about that!" Watch a legal drama with a lawyer or a cop show with a cop and you'll hear the same thing. Hell, I can't even think of a single time I've ever seen someone use an *asthma inhaler* correctly in movies or TV, and that's the easiest thing in the world to get right. Somehow no one ever does.
But when any random person without specific expertise can rip holes through the fabric of a show then you know you have a REAL problem with it. You don't need to have zombie experts in real life to know that a story about zombies has generic flaws from a purely dramatic/literary/plot point of view.
As always everything is relative.

Quote:Just because this game "usually" kicks off new Issues on Tuesdays doesn't mean there's a law that says they can only release them on Tuesdays. I figure with Thanksgiving coming up next week they are still highly motivated to get it out the door before then. From what I've observed, they follow a pretty strict policy of publishing to test prior to going live. And it has to stay on test for one cycle.
If the latest patch on test fixed the big issues with Khelds and Doms, I am hopeful that 16ish can become 17th.
I'm looking for an extended maintenance announcement around 4pm today for Wednesday morning, and I'm not giving up hope yet!
I'm not going to write-off the chance of getting I19 before Thanksgiving until about Thursday of this week. If the only show-stopping problem holding it up right now is the Kheldian bug that bug could be fixed anytime in the next day or two. My guess is the Devs would be willing to risk having to put in some potential overtime this weekend in order to keep themselves from having to worry about it next weekend.
-
Actually MOST of my characters aren't going to be respeced to account for this change for all sorts of reasons.
I'm probably only going to worry about it on my few most played / main characters. -
Quote:I suppose if the Devs ever give us the ability to create our own "apartments/personal bases" we'll get a shelf to put all these souvenirs on. All I know is that the shelves for my main characters will have to be pretty big because they have 100s of souvenirs at this point.Things that bug me: "Souvenirs" were pretty clearly supposed to be actual items that your character picked up during an arc. The name of the souvenir is the name of the item. The description starts with "This item reminds you of a story, a story you like to call.... Title Of The Arc."
Most souvenirs for new storyarcs follow this convention, but the ones introduced for the Hollows/Striga/Croatoa storyarcs are just the title of the arc and a description. What, did I stuff "Flux the Outcast" into my Vault of Heroic Deeds between "An etched Clockwork piece" and "The PsychoChronoMetron"? Does he just sit there all day and tell me about the time we had an adventure together whenever I ask? How am I holding a "Piercing the Veil" next to my "Freakalympics gold medal"? THIS MAKES NO SENSE ARGH.

Quote:Of course we have to say: "all inclusive badges are a bad idea because they could always add more arcs and the requirements would constantly change,.. blah blah", but I still agree. That's a fair amount of arcs there on both sides, and a few of them are a real pain on certain characters that don't solo well. I've run through them all on my 3 badge toons as well, and if it means another badge for doing it, I'm in... so...
...if we wanted to accommodate the growing list of arcs, we could simply make a badge for earning X amount of souvenirs (from non-AE arcs). Then we'd get multiple badges for the series, and more arcs would eventually bring more badges.
Yeah my "get a badge for doing ALL the Ouro arcs" idea was a bit pie-in-the-sky anyway so I didn't really bother to reign it in with the "what if they add more arcs" caveat.Quote:Collecting Souvenirs
10 - Token
50 - Memorabiliast
100 - Taken
150 - Keepsake
200 - Unforgettable
250 - Souvenir Hound
300 - The Complete Experience
But the idea of making a series of count badges for souvenirs is probably a better alternative. I haven't kept up with what the overall total could be on one character but it might be approaching 300 at this point. -
Quote:Until we learn how the Praetorian verison of Ouroboros will be handled it does look like at least the first 4 badges you listed will be Praetorian-only badges. It's not clear if Praetorian Tourist will ever become a "live" badge or not. Also, I think until Praetorians get their own Mender and morality flashbacks, we still won't be able to get:
- Avid Reader (may require some sort of Praetorian Mender story arc, like the ones to get the Hero/Villain tutorial badges?)
- Moral High Ground (would require Praetorian arc flashbacks)
- Loyalist (same)
- Resistance Member (same)
- Praetorian Tourist (surprised that this isn't awarded for Primal Earther visiting Praetoria, but then again it is a Ouroboros badge - still not sure how to get this).
I don't really have a problem with the idea of there being a few badges that might forever be out of the reach of Primal Earth badgers. Praetorian-based characters will never be able to have the anniversary badges prior to August 2010 (which means they'll never get the 5th Columnist gladiator or the Pursuer/Elusive badge either) so there could be some "lost" badges on both sides.
I think to start those arcs you'd have to be hero/vigilante or villain/rogue respectively.Quote:To get the two new story arcs, will characters need to switch full Hero/Vill?
So either you have to switch alignments for both or join in on someone else's arc as a tourist. -
Quote:Yes I know Empowerment buffs still count. I wasn't trying to imply they didn't.Empowerment buffs were counting two weeks ago when I crafted them on my Corr who still hasn't Fabricator. He went from 1497 to 1503 by crafting empowerments.Quote:It's definitely a "plodding" badge now, especially since they got rid of base salvage. There used to be a time where you could get a bunch of base salvage to craft base components (which counted for Fabricator) then burn those components off as Empowerment Buffs (which also counted).
Of course Fabricator used to require 10,000 crafts (not just 2,000) so I guess it all makes sense somehow.

The point I was making is that there was a time when you could "double-up" on crafting back when base salvage was a significant part of the game. The cool part about it was that you could carry up to 99 of each of the base salvage/component types instead of being limited to whatever amount of invention salvage you can carry.
Let's just say if nothing had changed about the way bases used to work then only having to craft 2,000 times for Fabricator would have almost been trivial.

Quote:This is a MMO. Almost by definition the Devs can arbitrarily change anything, even if it's been working perfectly enough for years.Well, Hover got "fixed" and Lightning Storm got "fixed" after what, four years and some change? The worst part of it was the indignant finger-pointing that "Everyone KNEW they were bugged" and they were therefore "exploits" that went on in the forums afterward. Wait, what? But "fixed" they got.
Moral of the story: Do not rely on it being a "bug they won't bother fixing."
If the Devs ever bother to "fix/nerf" Hot Feet to somehow only work when we are on the ground I'll either adapt to it or stop using it. There wouldn't be much I could do if the Devs wanted to ruin my enjoyment of that power. On the other hand the Devs could also just rename the power "Hot Cloud" (like Choking Cloud) to more accurately reflect how the power -actually- works.

Quote:I haven't really watched Castle, but I do like how the makers of The Big Bang Theory manage to work in references to City of Heroes in many of their episodes. I've seen the "Statesman Star" being worn as a T-shirt or on a poster in many of the episodes. I guess there's some question as to whether those "product placements" are authorized by NcSoft or not but I guess gaming nerds will support the games they love regardless.Doesn't every Castle have some subtle Firefly reference, even if it's just something seen in the background?

Quote:The funny thing is I don't really consider myself a "nitpicker" of this show. This show, like so many genre shows before it and probably after it, doesn't hold up to any major scrutiny. But the nit-pickers will over-analyze and the die hard fans will defend and the circle will be unbroken.
I'm just gonna enjoy it, warts and all, for the one hour of entertainment per episode that it is meant to be.
You should see what I can do with a show I actually -don't- like.
But all the same I do get tired of constantly having to "accept" mediocre genre shows in general.
A show worth watching should be able to hold up to a reasonable amount of scrutiny as you put it.
I don't think shows should get a blanket pass just because they are any degree better than average.
I'm giving this show as serious try because it does have potential.
I'm not obligated to have to like it - it's obligated to make itself worth my time and effort. -
Quote:Like I said before I'm willing to watch the next 3 episodes to better judge the full "season" of the show. This review echoes some of the sentiments that have been expressed here.
But I'll also have to admit this review did capture a number of lingering concerns I have about this show.
Time will tell of course. -
Quote:You do love to nitpick on specific single words I use don't you.hypothetical fire escape? it was a perfectly reasonable suggestion, no different than your power leaper concept.

In this case I used the word "hypothetical" in its literal sense, not derogatory in any way.
Sensitive much?
I have no problem with the idea of a fire escape (that wasn't actually shown) existing to "solve" the problem of what happened to Merle. It's just something to talk about here...
You seem to be taking this show way too seriously. It's a sci-fi/horror show. That's all it is. As such it has some good elements and bad ones. Not -that- big a deal here.Quote:I am starting to think this show really isn't for you... There has to be some sort of reality program on another channel you could watch that you could spend your time finding reality breaking implausibilities in.
I'm currently enjoying it so I like to conjure up "what ifs" for this kind of thing. I don't SERIOUSLY think this show is just a coma-inspired nightmare conjured up by Rick's mind. But it frankly would be interesting if it took a Hitchcockian twist like that.
I like good stories that work well within their established frameworks regardless if they are fiction or not. If there are bits that could have been handled better I don't mind pointing them out. But so far this show hasn't done enough bad things to turn me off, yet. It's not on SyFy after all. Let's just say I think there's enough potential for this show that it would be disappointing if it let its rough edges cause it to become unwatchable too quickly.
