As for the quoted bit, I'm neither for nor against Powerlevellers or Farmers: it's their accounts, their money they're paying with, they can play as they want. They don't tell YOU how to play YOUR game and you shouldn't impose your way of playing on them. You're not forced to accept their invites or to invite them to your team, you're not forced to endure them in anyway, that's what the Ignore command is there for.
Play your game and let others play theirs as they like it.

Let's face it, farmers are in every MMO, you can't stop them, just like you can't stop people eating fatty cheeseburgers.
There one of the groups in a MMO: there's the group who wants to have fun and just play the game normally, there's people who want to PvP, there's people who want to RP, and there's people who want to farm.
I can see a lot of farmers and PLers packing their bags if this suggestion is implemented.
Btw, suggested before - search ftw!
[/ QUOTE ]
I can agree to an extent...
Stupid thing is it won't work, unless they remove levels and economy both farmers and PLers will continue to play, making the game worse for normal players won't stop them or even inhibit them for long, they'll just find another method.
[/ QUOTE ]
For me I disagree 100%, not only won't this stop them spam in /b, it will encourage spam /t because the farmers will need level 40s instead of lowbies to fill. It won't effect farmers significantly. But it will effect people who play together for fun, and remove one of the high level CoH zones from play. -
1)Seen prior art used in US tech patents before. I'll try and dig out the reference I'm thinking about (or re-read and make sure I'm remembering correctly myself.
2)Didn't someone try and sue MS for some patented tech that it turned out Apple had been using for five years longer than MS, judge threw it out because the patent holder was just looking for a fast buck and not to protect its IP? -

PvP, in my opinion, does not include:
-see something flash by, being 80% HP hit while your oponent is already a 50-80ft away (at least).
-jumping around like crazy in a box that even popcorn would feel ashamed.
-from 1 moment to another standing in a pile of traps, your screen overflood with 'things' and 1 second later you are on the ground looking at the you-died-window.
-Without mez standing held, stunned, feared, whatever for 99% of the battle. (or either dead on the ground).
No, i would have liked they took a peak at their other game, Guildwars, i often just log on to see a battle between 2 big guilds. Or maybe towards other MMOs how they did their PvP.
Mezz imho is the main source of PvP problems. Yes, in pve you can lockdown pretty much everything you see for a infinitive of time, but in PvP people just dont like this. The whole PvE system was never designed to be PvP-able and probably will never be.
What i believe they should have done, made several 'template' arena's. Where certain aspects are disabled, heavily reduced or sortlike. It will give people the chance to experience different ways of PvP in CoH, rather that to stick up 1 kind of style (be it i12 or i13) and probably will never PvP. (good example is the winter event in GW, you get a fixed set of powers, its skills that make the difference - unlike here).
[/ QUOTE ]
To a point I agree, may absolute major gripe about PvP when I did PvP was being perma-mezzed, even once that put diminishing returns on Mezzes it didn't stop it. However if you stop mezzes being useful in PvP what do you do with dominators or controllers, especially controllers? A significant proportion of their powers are designed to Mez, in one form or another. Dominators don't even have a buff 2ndary to fall back on. Note I have no idea how to fix it, but if you remove Mez or nerf it into uselessness then two or more ATs become pretty pointless in PvP.
[/ QUOTE ]
Personally for the zone PvP I'd suggest a merged Battle Ground type Zone (so all servers share BGs EU, US I'd imagine a system similar to battle groups would be better), with specific objectives (PvP objectives) and specific PvP rewards. Add in lvl50 PvP rewards that like purples can only be slotted at fifty (earned throughout your career) and have a version of each BG that is 50s only). Sub fifty zones remove any bonus from level 50 only IOs (eg Purples and PvPIOs) and the enhancement bonus is scaled to CIO levels. With the ability to stop earning XP you can easily level to 49 and then twink your build while earning PvP rewards that can be slotted into a level 50 build. Perhaps even allow the alternate build to be a level 49 build.
Make each zone much smaller and remove all but a fraction of PvE content, flavour mobs would be all I'd leave in. People only go into the zone to PvP. Personally I reckon a CTF, a CP (capture points), King of the Hill, base raid (using stock maps rather than specific bases until base raids are back in game). Move inter faction PvP into arenas and expand what you can do in the arenas to include most of what can be done now. Make arena matches into grudge matches and practice sessions. Keep team sizes fairly small, CTF would be 8/16. CP/KoTH should be bigger as you have more to do there and I reckon 16-32.
And yes I'm borrowing heavily from the sort of PvP I enjoyed in the past, which is the WoW system, which may or may not be the best in the world (probably not TBH) but works and I really can't believe its that bad bearing in mind the number of people who actually do PvP in WoW... 25% of WoW's population (using previously mentioned percentage of CoH players) is still more players than we have altogether! -

b ) The zones and arena boards are massively quieter than they were.

Because while there are probably plenty of people who are now liking PvP more than they did, I'm betting there were more people who now don't PvP because of the changes, hence the argument that PvP can't be fixed. -
I imagine if you ask on the vidiot maps forums they might well add day job locations to those maps.

Need to get a laptop for work, work is web design and some writing (content generation), as the work doesn't subsidise the purchase I have to use my own money, which means I'm a bit limited on cash.
Max I want to spend is £350, I can already see some laptops that are cheaper than this, so thats not at issue. I'd also like to be able to run CoH (and another MMO (starts with a W and ends with a W... middle letter is O)) on the laptop, it doesn't have to have a huge resolution and if I want to run TFs I'll be using my home PC but being able to check the AH from places other than my room would be nice.
Must be Windows (I can always put a 'nix flavour on later, but it has to work out of the box.)
Must run Office (but if its windows that okay)
Must run DW MX
Must Run apache (so I can use a test server)
Must run CoH
Must cost no more than £350 (including VAT)
Any suggestions greatly appreciated. (Really can't spend more cash so suggesting I spend more is not reality.) -
Use Google
Appedn 'site:uk.boards.cityofheroes.com' (without the quotes) to the search text. -

WAR's PvP works because the whole game and much of the audience are there for said PvP. In fact if anything the PvE suffers a good bit for it, being more of a side show.
I think (Although i'd happily be proved wrong) that really a game can't have its cake and eat it too in this case. Balancing between PvP and PvE takes too much time and is too much of a high wire act to work, you're going to have to choose one or the other.
[/ QUOTE ]
Which to me sounds a lot like EVE, where PvP is the basis of pretty much everything you do and my main reason I no longer play.
I liked PvP in CoH because anyone could jump in and do something fun, IOs removed that for me I'm never going to farm, an activity I do but loath to fully slot builds to just fight people. If my PvE build worked acceptably in PvP that'd be okay, with IO sets, and especially the purple sets I can't compete. ((Okay that's a vast simplification and not entirely true, but to me thats what caused PvP to stop being fun and become a non-fun activity)) As for the arenas I never enjoyed their completely stultifying boredom, yes I know now you can change maps and stuff but my bad experiences in there means I won't now try them.
TBH While I no longer play on a PvP server, I think the World PvP version of PvP in WoW is the best I have seen, though personally I prefer the consensual version on PvE servers, though with our population I don't think that'd work.
For me CoH2 would have world PvP, (flaggable on PvE servers). Then you'd get that epic villains battling the heroes scrum you see in comics, it'd be consensual so that those of who don't care for PvP, or for that battle can ignore or avoid it entirely. And to help balance things I'd remove the artificial Archetypes system, so that you can be who you chose to be. You'd still be limited to Blaster Corruptor etc but both sides would have the whole gamut of ATs, which would be much easier to balance. sure you might need to change the names for the different sides, but I fail to see why a heroic mastermind couldn't be called a Commander or something similar. And I'd add a middle ground, that everyone would start out as a neutral type who could become either good or bad, and change from one to the other where their every deed (both PvP and PvE) would let them define who they are. I'd sign up for the game now...
Arena's would remain and become the only place that teams from the same faction could duke it out, plus add danger room scenarios for those of us who are happy fighting computers. -
I'd suggest adding those as replacements for the 'Magic' and 'technology' teleports. Not sure if a Magic door is what I'd want, I'd like to just have some functioning doors that look good in any base that I can use instead of the tech teleports, which look ugly IMO.

[ QUOTE ]
What aggravates me is all it takes is a little thought and planning.
Take base raids for example. Why do they have to be limited to bases? Why cant two SGs, of either villian v hero or same side v same side duke it out in a city zone? And i dont mean an instanced one. I mean in the same zone that we play but they, having been allocated, can fight and any other player cant join in?
[/ QUOTE ]
Because even if you assume that the previously quoted 25% of the population is a 100% PvPer is correct, three quarters of the player base would be up in arms over more time devoted to a minority past time.
[ QUOTE ]
Why cant the devs invent some incentive for these battles?
They dont even have to invent em. There are hundereds of JLAvJSA or X men v Avengers stories they can swipe to create a compelling reason to fight.
Who knows? Maybe some PvE players would get the PvP bug.
The players would love it. And they'de be great to watch too. I could go on and on.
Just a bit of imagination and forward planning is required to spruce this game up no end.
[/ QUOTE ]
If they can fix PvP so that Purples give tangible benefits but don't make you godlike, so that both the HC PvP community and the casuals are happy then, and only then, should they start adding PvP features of any sort. Because until PvP in its basic form is fixed no amount of plasters will make the game better.

Also the 25% is people who are pvping often and hardcore. Not including people who go to pvp once in blue moon.
[/ QUOTE ]
I seriously doubt the precision of that number.
[/ QUOTE ]
Castle or Lighthouse posted it on US forum. You can go search it up yourself.
[/ QUOTE ]
I did, found nothing.
I think you read it in your dreams...
I would guess the number is closer to 2.5% rather than 25%.
[/ QUOTE ]
Or 25% of the population PvP sometimes, which sounds about right. A quarter of people have PvPed at least occasionally. -
I used to enjoy PvP, two things put me off. One was a lack of tangible rewards and the other was the mindset of so many people who do seem to enjoy PvP, sadly a mindset that now extends to the forums. I now have no interest in learning how to PvP because the rules are completely different to PvE play.
Lack of PvE content and updates will cause lower player numbers and that is what we're seeing now. Slap a band aid onto PvP and that player loss won't change appreciably, fix PvE, add PvE content, add new power sets and yes new costumes that is far more likely to encourage new players and to help people to return. -

The only way COH2 has a chance is if they announce it before CO comes out.
[/ QUOTE ]
Only way it would help retain numbers assuming CO is any good would be if they release at the same time or before, which is extremely doubtful. Just announcing it will not prevent people moving to another game.
If CoH2 isn't released for two years it could still do very well, but that would be based on how good it is not on how good CO might be now (or on release). -
[ QUOTE ]
i see no dev posting about it, so i don't have much hope about COX2 being true at all.
first i want a dev confirm it, then i can believe it.
[/ QUOTE ]
You don't need to believe yet, but hope is surely called for?
Like I don't believe Necris is worth paying attention to, but I hope he rapidly leaves to PvP in EVE where his ilk belong... -
You might be onto something there actually... they can't merge CoH1 servers without getting 'this game is dead' syndrome... however if they re-released the game as CoH2 and everyone had to start from scratch in a newer game universe they'd avoid that possibility, plus if it coincided with a graphics overhaul and boxed product they'd increase their footfall too.
Whether or not they can move the existing game into a new engine fast enough to beat CO is a different matter personally I doubt it, I'd reckon at 2 - 3 years for that and while the finished product would be much better (probably) than CO it'd also be three years away, so no competition. So its down to timing, unless something has happened to CO (Atari buying Cryptic?) or NCSoft have been working on the new version since before they bought the IP, possible but unlikely, I'd say that any new expansion will use the existing engine. -

On topic.. Where does Massively get its info from? Has there been some hint from Posi et al that there is going to be a CoH2 on the cards rather than a graphics update to the existing engine?
If a player had posted this as a topic on the boards I think it'd be shot down in flames as unlikely and all sorts of requests for source.
[/ QUOTE ]
It's educated guess work. Based on what the current engine is and how it works and the various statements by various devs as to how hard it'd be to make it lots better. While I don't agree with LionsBane to keep up with some of the nicer 'potential' features in CO CoH will have to pull out all the stops.
Personally I'm not sure about a new engine, that way they have the potential to lose quite a few CoH1 players, I'd expect to see a CoH2 based on the current engine but substantially altered, especially as Posi has said that they don't use a lot of its features yet.
@Necris
TBH Who would we rather lose a foul mouthed troll like you or someone who was just doing his job? -
IMO 40 Man raids...
But you have to have 20 man MM raids first...
Just to check that the servers can handle it. -

Without temp powers I came oh-so-close on my Thugs/Dark Mastermind during the patron arc. Haven't managed to get at her with either of us at 50 though, I'd guess Heroes have more opportunities to face off against her.

Ghost Widow appears exactly twice in Hero content AFAIK: once in the new Cimerora arc (at the mission level, as long as you're 40 or higher), and once in LRSF (at level 54).

in the off chance that a dev looks through the uk forums, they could spot which ideas seem most popular and use some of the ideas in there own implementation.
thats a bit like saying why post on the forums in the first place because nothing we say gets done.

Or the thread can be locked for a)Being off topic, this is general discussion and not suggestions and b)A vote which IIRC is against the rules.
If the devs have to trawl through every different board on the off chance that a suggestion is made out of the suggestion boards then they['ll have less time to actually read the place where the actual suggestions are. -
Maybe they ought to have their own 'unique' beacons and leave the broken one as a decoration.

ATM the Pocket D teleport beacon you add for tech teleports is a broken screen.
Suggestion add a proper item with associated picture (like the others), then add the current beacon item as a placeable 'broken' screen.
