I haven't played this guy in ages, and I'm not sure how the current thinking in brute-building goes, so please bear with me.
Anyway, how does this look for a farming (just running missions at 0x8 or 1x8 or something) build?:

The defenses may not be necessary... I just wasn't sure quite what direction to go. Would focusing more on +rech or +def be easier? I'm thinking I could probably drop one of the SM attacks as well with that level of recharge, but what to swap it for? -
Ahh yes, you don't know me :P.
I have tried vsync on/off, fsaa on/off, AF on/off. FSAA,etc. are set to application control in the CCC. I haven't exhaustively tested every combination yet, but I've messed with most of the basics.
I'm not at home right now, but I'm going to go down the list tonight and see if there is anything I haven't tweaked. -
Wow, lots of replies since last I checked. Thanks for the input folks! Let's see:
I don't mind mixing market farming in (and in fact I plan to do some of that as well), but I don't want the focus to be there just because a) it bores me b) I'm not very good at it yet and c) I have limited capital to invest - I assume that once I hit a billion or so this becomes easier? I realize that I need to do some research into this as well, but if someone has a link to a handy market farming guide I'd appreciate that as well.
I dug around on the brute/scrap/tank forums and didn't see a softcapped elec armor build (or even a 25% one) - it sounds like you guys are pretty familiar with that, so would someone mind posting one for me?
Someone mentioned elec/shield... if that's that much stronger than stone/elec I have one @41 that would do. I enjoy playing him, but he does always feel weak on single target mop-up.
Quote:Yes, this is why I ended it with a question mark. When I last looked into it (a couple issues back), that's what people were doing (in addition to market farming, sorry I took that as a given).OP said
Quote:I'm assuming that some combination of Architect or Ouro Merit farming is the way to go?
I haven't dabbled in the hero/villain merit stuff at all yet, mostly because I don't have much interest on playing characters outside of my new ones, but I will get to it eventually. What is this "cashing in" on Alignment merits? You mention 50merits +20 mill - is that the price for a LotG +rech?
To those who suggest making new characters: No, that's part of the point of this post: "What can I do with what I have?" -
So I installed my new 5770 (with the latest drivers of course) last night - and everything looks and runs great EXCEPT:
*sometimes* when I move or turn, I get a horizontal line, somewhere in the top half of the screen, where the image above and below this line doesn't match up (it will be offset by < 1cm IIRC).
Yes, vsync is on.
If I find an area that repeatedly gives me this issue (the wood looking 70s office buildings seem to do it most), then switch my texture settings (high->medium, etc.) the line will disappear - but only for that area, it will pop up in a minute or two somewhere else.
This line is not visible on screenshots.

Quote:IT looks like the formatting got screwed up somehow. I may have to rebuild them by hand and re-export... when I have time and motivation!Ive tried to open a few of the builds you posted its not working. Says data may be corrupted and I noticed smiley icons popping up in the info your supposed to copy and past to Mid's.
Yeah... I can see that one of my cut and pastes (maybe last time I fixed the formatting after one of the forum changes?) must have grabbed a bunch of <, & kind of things. I can see how to auto clean most of them, but there's still one I haven't found yet. Joys of gibberish.
[edit: I just checked my old build files, and I can't find these, they must have been done on another machine. So, I'll have to re-input them. If anyone happens to beat me to it and wants to post the code, I'd be glad to edit that back into the original posts. ]

Quote:Softcapping defense on a non-defense set? That sounds intense. Yeah, that's a fun char, I'll see about starting there. I can always grab some kind of buffbot on the second account if that will help.Stone/Elec is not hard to softcap and has ridiculously good mitigation in the form of Fault, which together with Tremor, can take a FF +Rech proc. So not only can you softcap, but you can easily run 150%+ recharge without really trying, and you don't need Hasten for it.
-
Of course not, I want it too!
I'm just saying that, "morally" (in a very weird sense of it, if that groks), part of me wants to fight it so tanks can keep something "sacred" as it were. But the bigger part of me would rather freeze AND poison stuff to death. -
True. It's weird... on one hand, I hope they don't proliferate *everything*, just so each archetype has at least one set that it will never share. At the same time, I don't want that set to be Ice Armor... but ice/ice is all tanks have left. So ugh.
-
Yeah... that is one of the reasons for me wanting to finally get off my butt and farm me up some eleventybillions so I can finally purple out some alts! I'm quite please to hear that my guide is helping you - anytime you invest in creating something, hearing that someone else is benefiting from it is awesome.

Quote:Whatever is the fastest.I would lvl up the spines/da scrapper and run with that. If you secondary build the soldier into a crab build, that might work as well. All depends on what kind of pace you want to set.
The soldier is crab specced atm and moderately IO'd already and is a great char, but even at their current slotting levels I'd wager either of the brutes are better. -
Hmm. Well. I hope this does not get changed, but rather gets clarified in the in game text . I'm of the mind that the epics were already too easy to get - expecting them both to unlock for a Praetorian seems odd.
I expect/hope the Praetorians will get their own epic archetype (although reasonably that would be like, I21 at least, definitely no time soon) and that would be their unlock.
At minimum, as others have pointed out, leaving them tied to H/V is a good incentive to check out that content. -
Alrighty. So, I understand some folks have eleventy billion dollars. I've managed to stick around since launch and haven't even passed the 250mill mark, so I should probably get right on that.
With that in mind... for the folks that are more familiar with the #s than myself, what are opinions on which would be the best of the following characters to optimize for inf farming (I'm assuming that some combination of Architect or Ouro Merit farming is the way to go? Mix of inf & recipes to sell?):
Fire/Storm Cont
Stone/Elec Brute
Bot/Dark MM
Arach Soldier
Widow
DB/WP scrap
SS/DA brute
[Yes, I've been here since launch and I only have 7 50s. What!? I'm easily distracted.]
I also have a spines/da scrap in the 40s, in case that's a better option. -
Do you get this in the character creator as well? I noticed that last night.
-
Quote:You know, an ice/spines tank would be pretty nice too.... I will probably make pretty much every iteration of that option once it becomes available. Maybe even a stalker...I wouldn't be against /Ice for Brutes. Might not help their Fury, but I wouldn't put that restriction out there.
I think my top Scrappers that I want to make that I cannot currently are Spines/Ice and War Mace/Shield Defense. Please please please let there be power proliferation in I19. -

Any idea how much that 6870 is going to cost? Is that their new top of the line product for that tier or ...?
-
Anyone doing km/elec? I haven't done a stalker in ages (my last were claws/nin & db/reg), but I really dig the km set and it seems like it will shine even more on a stalker than the brute I'm currently working on. And more speed, recharge, end and some healing never hurts...
-
Did updates fix your issues?
I'm having a problem that is very similar, but my machine is Vista (fully updated)/Mobile Geforce 9600ish. I can turn the graphics all the way down to chicken scratch and I still get huge lag spikes that almost always result in death every 5-15 minutes. It happens even if I'm just sitting idle, both in Praetoria and out (but more so in Praet). -
I just saw that. It doesn't seem like it will impact quality of product or anything, but yeah it is a little surprising that they would trade in a trademark/name with so much goodwill attached to it.

What's the difference between those two sapphire models? I think the one I ordered was the -3L?
I doubt I'll ever touch that game, but the reviews looked pretty solid for the Sapphire at that price, I just wasn't familiar with that brand name (although I think I recall you saying in another thread that they were the reference board makers or something?). -
Ahh I was comparing a $200 Gigabyte 5830 to this 5770 @ 170/150rebate.
That Sapphire looks like a winner though. Done. -
Gotcha!
Quote:Depending on your resolution, this may be your best bang-for-buck. A 5770 should be able to drive these games with most options turned on in 1680*1050, even against a Core2.
Quote:Yes, Yes, and No.
First, the no. Right now multi-gpu rigs do nothing for City of Heroes. There's no guarantee that Crossfire or SLI will ever be supported under the City of Heroes game
Quote:Second, the first yes. ATi's crossfire is not as... restrictive as Nvidia SLI. With Nvidia SLI will only run when you have two cards from the same vendor. With ATi crossfire? Well... AMD typically just bases Crossfire support on model:
Quote:For this you'll just have to yank open the side of the case and look.
From a pure power draw, if you can run a 9600 GT, the 5770 should also run.. Although.... DUH I just pulled up my invoice from Newegg from 4 years ago, looks like I've got a 450w.
In your opinion, is $30 more for a 5830 worth it? Given what I've got now, what I'm shooting for, and that the most graphics intense things I'll be running are things like SC2, Guild Wars 2 & CoX would it be a noticeable bump? -
Thanks for the replies and je_saist, WOW, what a reply.
re: GTX 265: Wasn't even on my radar, I know nothing about that one.
re: upgrades: I will be upgrading the rest of the system eventually, hopefully inside the next 6 months. Right now, I can probably afford to upgrade the card - cards generally last me about ~2 years. I will probably grab an athlon x4 or x6 - whatever is sweet in the $150-180 price point when I can afford to do that. So, figure I'll want the card I get to play well with that as well.
From your description, it sounds like the 5770 will do exactly what I need, and I can save that extra $$ that I would spend on a 5830 (your wording, and the other poster who mention the NV driver issues, seems to support the ATI option, which is what I was leaning toward as well). I don't really play any games that are more intense than CoX (yet, GW2 will be the next "new" game I pick up).
If I get a Crossfire-ready mobo, I can always pick up a second 5770 to bump up my performance in a year, instead of say, a brand new card? (Or does it require an exact match on cards...which could make things difficult in a year).
What I'm not sure of at the moment is how big my PSU is at home, as I may need to upgrade that as well.
